View Full Version : Is Beast too Weak?

There was a thread in here before the site went down about Beast being too powerful. I've found them to be too weak at least against the PC in multiplayer. Sure you can beat one Somtaaw on Easy, but on Moderate, it either Seiges you to death or leeches you to death. Unless you are able to Infest a Multibeam Frigate, none of the Beast ships is really cable of picking off the leeches very well.

Any further thoughts?

Um that thread was bit of light humour Rent-A-Zilla started after a game in which both he and I were beast and beat 2 taaws who then complained that beast was too powerful:D . Beasts main problem is lack of rus to stop early swarms from experienced players and the armour reduction on the carriers. MultiGuns and any fighter will kill leeches off your CS, heck any of your ships will do that. Beast gameplay post-patch comes down to swarming and CS rushing. They're alot weaker than pre-patch beast was but you can still have good 2vs2's, 3vs3's etc with them, it's really only 1vs1 that they have problems keeping up with taaw.

Again? We already had this discussion on the last board...

In the hands of any normal Cataclysm player Beast is royaly screwed. Int the hands of a expert player that knows how to use Beast it can be quite deadly.

Old Chinese Proverb: "A gun does not make a man a man. A man makes a man a man."

Basically it dosen't matter what kind of weapon (race) you use it depends on the player themselves.

I just beat 2 united CPUs on hard, using beast - bounties off, inj off, starting cash 4000.
For me, it easier to take out 2 CPUs on hard with beast than with taaw.
Beast is not as weak as many would lead you to believe ;) .

*punching self in za face!*
BURN the very crewed BEAST!!!!!!!!!!:D
In SP the game was extremely easy to beat. The Beast really sucks!! The only way they can survive is to infect other screwed ships. hehehe!!
I always play Somtaaw heeheehee....:p
BLOORGAMOORG!!!!:p
Just kidding. It doesn't matter what race it is, it depends on the player who plays the race:)

crimson times large My humble opinion is this: Both races have their strong points and their weak points. That will be all.

I reverted back to the original version 1.0. Beast is much easier to play, and for the Somtaaw, a much greater challenge to defeat. I like to play Somtaaw in skirmish mode, but I don't want the Beast to be defeated easily, so going back to 1.0 made it a lot more spicey to me.

Actually, beast doesn't play noticably different with pre-patch settings - the 30 RU load difference does nothing to production if you know how to use beast in the first place. Taaw has more noticable differences. Beast doesn't resource any better, and taaw production rates are just as high, just as soon (k, maybe it takes about 30 seconds longer 'till you triple-pump).

Actually... and i may be overstepping here ;) but there are some VERY shrewd strategies for beast...

VERY

I know some players, and wont name names, that have found some really keen places to take advantage of what the beast race can do. In no way to i mean bugs or the like, nor any rock bashing... this is purely legit. They can give the beast a great advantage in the early game, and pummel you long before you get your little 20 missolyte swarm out to kill their workers.
I was surprised at first, but what they do makes a lot of sense now. (yes, they beat me, many times, into a pulp, oh yeah gg ghent)
The 2 races are nearly equal, i think.

You can play prepatch 2 ways on WON. Use alphas pre-patch mod or you can remove the big file from your cataclysm directory. Of course you still need to be playing against someone who has the mod or removed the update.big file as you have so you don't sync.

You don't want to get rid of (make sure to back it up!) the update.big file ~ you should extract the race_sect and the race_beast files from the cataclysm.big file using the bigviewer. That way, you still get the proper post-patch AI and game setup screens. There are a lot of other important things in the update.big file that you need for the game to run smoothly, so don't just get rid of it.

Eiden is correct.

Do not just delete the update.big as you may find some bugs returning. For those of you not wanting to do all the big file extractions just get the MOD I made. It returns the beast and som back to prepatch settings. The only change BD made that I didn't 'correct' is the EMP stun times, so if you want to play online with others they MUST have the same files you have or you will get a cheat detect. So while Eiden's suggested would work to set you back to the prepatch ships, you will not be able to play online with anyone else unless they do the exact same thing. That is why I'd suggest my MOD, it does that for you and you can already meet a few people online with it.

Just a question, Alpha, but where can I get your Mod? I enjoy playing as Beast, they're much more interesting than the "boring" Somtaaw :D, and so I'd really like to get back to the "stronger" Beast in v1.0 of Cataclysm.

Why do I like Beast? Because Infection is one of the coolest weapons I've ever seen, in any game. And that's why I always play as Beast. The "coolness" factor makes up for any weaknesses Beast might have.

I've heard the mod is posted on the guru site (www.tbol.com/guru), but I've been unable to locate it. Alpha, if you could supply a link it would be great - I want to try this mod myself ~ do some good ol' beast vs taaw with it.

Also, anyone who is running the patch (or any patch), PLEASE make sure you remove it when you are done. I'm starting to wonder if the huge number of sync errors out there aren't because of some person or another forgetting that they have modified files, and playing against someone who does not.

I'll have a talk with Momo to see where it is and if he will let the public get it.

 Both races have their ups and downs. But if you know what you are doing tha you would know that utilizing the strong points of the beast's power can actually in most cases overrun the taww's speed. So in closing, If you know how to use them well, "milk it for all it's worth" and over power the larger numbers.

Its all in the player.

For example, MVB could beat most beasts, while on the other hand Peter450 could beat most taaw's. It's all in your strats.
