View Full Version : Epic Scale Combat hint?

k in the uberisupsetthread (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31) the HW2 poster was up and a few things caught my eye.
First is the scale of things and the size of the ship/s on either side of the poster aswell as the big blue ship in the middle.
The second is the words at the bottom...
http://www.relicnews.com/images/concept/homeworld2/hw2-poster-rn.jpg
could it be that relic are infact making the epic scale game we were al discussing heatedly some months ago?
The relative scale of the ships in the background and even the foreground ships suggests that the scale is infact alot different from the first game.
As to the words "epic" yes they can mean many things, and certainly the first game could have been called "epic" aswell, yet its context to the picture suggests more....

I'd say something like "You ain't seen nothing yet" but I haven't seen Homeworld 2...

my take is, scince those space suits look horribly like the ones we have in use today, minus the headgear, it could be something envolving us, as in the people of earth, or it could just be the hiigarans going to look for another homeworld, heh, or maybe im just totally wrong (not unlikely)

*sigh*...
I wish they'd bring up the news now...
Guess we'll have to wait a few more days :(
But if that top suggestion where to be true, I think I'll jump out the window right now!!! (I'm on ground level) :D

Quick Hide this before Aqarious sees it he has a fondness for telling us over in the HWU forums that the poster has nothing whatsoever to do with HW2 it is just an artists rendition and that the fact is we will most likely never see those in game. [Tries to recatch breath after spewing all that.]
But If those are the ships I really cant wait for HW2 as long as it does not involve SUs.

Dyntheos I think you might be right. If we look at any of the other games inprogress they have very different scales compared to HW. But they do look similar to the picture if those side ships are caps. Well as long as HW2 has great gameplay good graphics and awsome storyline I will be satified. ANd as for that flight suit he is wearing I think it is a flight suit. And how do we know what is hightech in the HW universe, it may be state of the line in the HW universe :D

/me punches uber in the kidneys
[edit]I was so anxious to punch uber that I accidentally sent before I was done.
I think I said something like this before, but I think the characters on that poster will be actual characters that somehow interact reapetedly through the game. This will help to make it an "epic".
quote from April 2000 Computer Gaming World after they were able to pry some info out of Garden:
While Relic will still keep the focus on big epic space battles, they hope to incorporate new features such as strategic geographic areas and character interaction.
I think those 3 faces on the poster will play a large, visible role in the game and help make it a more movie-like epic. They will become familiar characters to us through the single player campaign and perhaps somehow in the multiplayer also. I also think its funny that theres more actual game info coming out of a magazine thats 20 months old than anyplace else. Character interaction and strategic geographical areas? Thats like what?, poisonous nebulas and black holes or something?, and captains of ships?
Can anyone find actual quotes or anything that has directly to do with the game aspects of Homeworld 2? I'm not talking about when its going to be released or when news of the news of when it's going to be released, I'm talking about actual game info.
and one last thing:
ep·ic (ĕp'ĭk)
n.
An extended narrative poem in elevated or dignified language, celebrating the feats of a legendary or traditional hero.
A literary or dramatic composition that resembles an extended narrative poem celebrating heroic feats.
A series of events considered appropriate to an epic: the epic of the Old West.
Those guys on that poster are our heros... they are our Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess cj...?

Geez, something involving us from Earth? Even the possibility, man. Hey anyone know if we can preorder HW2 yet :)

Well... the ship coming right up the middle looks a bit like a Kushan ion cannon frigate without the antenna thing glued to the bottom.
Also, the two big brown ships to either side resemble the Khar-Toba methinks. Could the reason that HW:C has no bearing on Homeworld2 be that Homeworld 2 is the Higaara -> Kharak exodus?

hw2 is subtitled "Attack of the Giant Men in Space Suits" you see, some people were mutated when they landed on the planet and they turned huge and evil and donned space suits so they could go out and eat planets (like that giant transformer in the transformers movie) so anyway the fleet has to attack them and save teh universe from this terrible force
THE POSTER DOES NOT LIE

What makes you think those are ships on the site Targ?

1. I think they look like the Khar-Toba :/
2. They really dont look like space docks.
3. Everything else in the foreground/midground is a ship.
4. If you look above and to the left of the red ship at the bottom, that looks kind of like an engine cowling. Also, if you look above the ion cannon frigate type ship, there is a whitish bar going frm left to right, I cant tell what it is. Right off the left hand end of the white bar is what looks like another engine cowling.
5. To the left of the ion cannon frigate (ill just call it that, k?) there is a ship with four knob things on the front, below it is something that looks like a hatch.
6. The big ship on the left hand side looks like an enlarged version of they two ships right above the knob ship on the right hand side.

Kinda looks like a HOOGE Death Star Trench to me.
I don't exactly understand this 'the space suits look contemporary so they can't be from teh futur' bit.
Who says that space suit technology will need to change? What's so 'primitive' about fabric that allows freedom of movement? Who are we to say that "ono it has a helmet locking ring and some tubes, how stone-age"? Considering that HW pilots are inside ships that presumably have some form of environmental controls, a flexible suit that may be primitive, yes, but very reliable and sturdy seems to be a must for a combat ship.
And the guy in the middle and the guy on the left are the same. omg.

I too believe Relic is going to put more emphasis on the scale of the game... although they may not necessarily focus on the ships alone. They may make a few changes like more realistic nebulae, planets and asteroid fields. But that's all still speculation at this stage. :(
P.S. Uber - I may be wrong, but I remember you saying a few months back that you saw a working build of HW2 with menus and a few textured ship models and all that. Or was it someone else?
That was Uber, the lieing SOB:P
No offence intended, Uber, you lucky bastard:D
Anyways, it appears that the two big things on the sides extend for a hell of a long ways and that they are connected by the white bar in the distance, hence it seems like they are one ship/base/thing.

I have seen it??? Great!! I wish I could remember what I saw...
Well, you said you saw it in (I believe) April or June 2000. Somewhere around that time. You posted that in one of the threads in the (now defunct) wwwthreads RB.
Hence, unless you were lieing, you saw it:P

Errr I don't think so :-/
I might have said something like "If I had seen it it was probably nothing but a basic interface and some textured ships" if someone was pestering me for info...
I should probably know not to even pretend to joke about seeing anything made by relic... maybe I shouldn't post anymore... hell... next thing you know I'll be working for relic and making Homeworld 4 the way rumors around here work.
The somewhat exact words that I remember reading were as follows:
When I saw HW2 in April of 2000...
That's basically all I remember. I'm not sure if you said anything about menus or ships, only that you saw HW2 in 2000:P
Also, I talked to dmille about it about the minute I read that. He should be able to verify that story.
I believe the thread was the "Homeworld 2" thread.
EDIT:
I remember more exactly what you said now. You said it was at E3 of 2000 that you saw HW2.

ohhhhhhhh that must be Sigma you're thinking off
I saw it at E3 2000 and it had just a few textured animals in game and a basic menu.

Uber just make sure HW2 is finished before you get started on 4 OK!
Ah.
In that case, you probably messed up while typing that message up, as I distinctly remember you saying it was HW2 that you saw:P
Unless, of course, you are making this all up so that your non-disclosure agreement isn't broken:P
Anyways, I still want to see a huge difference in the size of the capships from the fighters. Due to the manual saying the Scaffold is 21 kilometers long, and the MS being about as big as the Scaffold, that would make the MS 21 klicks long. And then the HVC was about 1/3 of the size of the MS, and so it would be about 7 klicks long. The Destroyer was about 1/2 of that, so it would be about 3 klicks long. A frigate was about 1/3 of a destoyer, and so they'd be about 1 klick long. A corvette was about 1/5 the size of a Frig, and so they'd be about 200 meters long. A fighter is a good 1/3 of a Corvette, and so they'd be about 66 meters long.
Personally, I find these figures a bit too big, and so I want them to make their fighters more like 16 meters long, maybe less, and then make the various other ships get larger and larger, with more of a difference between each ship, until they reach MS size, again, about 20 klicks. That would be big:p

Is it me, or do some of those ships slightly resemble the naggarok, albeit smaller and with a little more detail?

I don't know about that, but the blue ship in the bottom right looks abit like the Tidan Ion cannon frigate. the four protruding spikes, ok so it has wings now. that sort of suggests that it will have the original races to some extent, the main question on my mind, is how far from the time of the original game will it be, and will it take the events of HW:C into account if they choose to place it after that...

I think that there may be many big ships because of the "Epic" in the poster and if you've seen the evil non-existent picture that relic doesn't want you to talk about, it looks like a pretty big ship. :)

>off screen< BANG!
dmille: I recall that he said that he saw an early build of HW2 or somesuch. Though I'm probably mistaken.
Anyways, Ignus: Cosmonaut? I believe that here in the States and Canuckadia they say "Astronaut":P
Anyways, those red ships in the far background seem to be of completely different style than any of the known races and, as such, they seem to be of a new race..............

Cosmonaut, Astronaut...same thing.
Just depends where you're from. The Ruskies call 'em Cosmonauts...
Hmm...
EDIT: Oh yeah, uhh... I think the art needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Actually, a whole frickin' ocean... No way is a -thing- that BIG gonna get on a map. Shame.
Why not, Alpha? It looks only to be, what, 200 klicks long? Maps get far bigger. Hell, it's using a whole new engine. It'll have bigger maps if it needs 'em.
Oh, and Ignus is from Canuckadia. I, however, am from the Armpit of the Universe. It sucks in Florida:(
