View Full Version : Ati Catalyst drivers links

BERSERK3R

I have read that there are some performance issues in dow with sertain ati drivers, that's why I made a list of links to some ati drivers, so it's easy to find them.
I think these are the most used driver versions, if you think there are more then let me know.
The links should be ok, but if there is a link that's not refering to the right driver let me know.
You can find the Omega drivers under the catalyst versions.

Excellent - even with google it can be tricky finding older driver versions. I award you a gold star and this thread a sticky :).

a mirror with more of the same drivers and some others. should anyone need even older drivers than are already listed then those too are here.

you should also be able to get a few over at www.fileshack.com it does require you to register, but ive been registered for almost a year and it does not send any spam e-mails and the other generic rubbish you get from similar sites

I have added some Omega driver versions of the Catalyst drivers.

Thanks berserker :)

I would recommend that people try the various catalyst drivers first and then try the omegas if they are still having problems.

Users not having any problems but wanting to improve their performance can try out the latest omegas (there are omegas available for both ATI and Nvidia cards).

Omega's drivers based on 5.8's are out now, haven't tried them yet

Yep, I have added the Omega 5.8 to the list.

oh and heres the link for the official mobility catalyst drivers:

http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/

its currently on 5.8 but the they'll change the drivers although they won't change the link (well at least thats whats happened when they switched from 5.6 to 5.7 and then to 5.8)

but it seems that no one archived the 5.6 and 5.7 mobility drivers. (tried googling but no leads)

It works on my mobility Radeon 9700. But ofcourse with all that sluggishness accociated with the normal 5.8 and 5.7.

according to certain websites, there are the cards the official drivers support although they don't say so on the website. Seems like ATI isn't too concerned that 'unsupported' cards are using their drivers. they've left this unsercured link ever since 5.6.

Supported cards:
"ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2/T2e"
"ATI MOBILITY FireGL V3100"
"ATI MOBILITY FireGL V3200"
"ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5000"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9500"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9550"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600/9700 Series"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9800"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON X300"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON X600"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON X600 SE"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON X800"
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON X800 XT"

one thing that i've noticed when using the 5.7 and 5.8 mobility drivers is that they take up more memory then the omega 5.6. I'm not sure if its caused by the control centre

still, the 5.8 gives a small increase with 3dmark2003 compared to omega 5.6

and ofcourse, before people who can't read the list of 'supported' cards start asking about whether their card is supported even though its listed, i've provided pictorial proof here:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v140/Fatfool/proofofcatalyst.jpg

learned it from certain forums where 'NPNT'(no picture, no talk) appears very often.

Btw some archiving on the official mobility drivers should really start....

ok!!! 5.9 is out both for mobility and normal catalyst.

gonna try the mobility to see if it fixed the problems with DoW

same link: http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/

and now they officially support:

Graphics technologies supported
Mobility™ Radeon® X800
Mobility™ Radeon® X700
Mobility™ Radeon® X600
Mobility™ Radeon® X300
Mobility™ Radeon® 9800
Mobility™ Radeon® 9700
Mobility™ Radeon® 9600

finally... :disagree:

edit: nope the problem still isn't fixed. same as 5.8. turning the VPU recover helps somewhat. Whats mostly added in this driver was some theater support.

is there a possibility that relic can fix this (in a patch) or are we just stuck waiting on ati?

TBS
30th Sep 05, 11:48 AM
We dont know exactly what has caused this so its uncertain whether the fix needs to come from Relic's end or ATI's. As the old ATI drivers worked fine and ATI has a lot more money and manpower to work with I'd be inclined to say that they should fix it.

This is an ATI problem and I encourage everyone encountering it to go to ATI site and report it.

Changing nothing else and rolling back from 5.9 or 5.8 to 5.6 removes all stuttering.

Those with a decent system (AMD64 3000+ 1Gig DDR 4200, 9800pro) should not be encountering stuttering. I just hope my BF2 performance doesnt drop with the 5.6. Here's hoping ATI recognizes and fixes this soon.

Now if I can just find players in the DOW lobby. I just got this game and there doesn't seem to be more than 60-100 players at any one time.

I already did and got this reply back:

'Please try uninstalling the ATI software from add/remove programs and install any updated drivers there may be for you laptop from the manufacturer. They should have a mostly updated version of the drivers that may work better.'

Presumably because i'm using the mobility drivers on an unofficially supported laptop.

So i'd wonder what would they have to say if the card involved is an X800 series or so....

It looks like everybody has a ATI 9800 pro.
I havn't seen others saying they have a older or newer ATI card.
Well I do have a newer card (X800XT PE), and It looks like the 5.6 version fixes the problem for the 9800 owners, but not for me (and possibly other X800XT owners).
It and looks like all my games crashes with 5.6, and others seem to have that problem also.

And I'm not sure if it is only ATI's problem, It seemed that previous versions of DOW ran better, but I'm not sure, so if that's true relic has to fix some things too.

oh yes I am running an ati 9800 pro, like the others having problems. but at least it looks like I might be dealing with a real person now instead of a purely automated system.

I doubt it though.

I gave them a link to this thread to show its not just me going crazy.

yeah yeah. now its a real person.

i'd expect them to direct you to the 5.6 catalyst after this.....

something like:

'Please try uninstalling the ATI software from add/remove programs and install the 5.6 catalyst drivers. . They should have not cause a problem.'

or something like that. as if we didn't already know -_-"

anyway, there goes another 2 days .

Gotta say I wish I checked this site before upgrading my video card. Just picked up an x800... older drivers, far as I understand, aren't going to work. DoW looks really pretty now--except for the fact it stutters like there's no tomorrow.

Meh. Here's hoping for a fix soon.

Also getting bad stuttering here since 5.8/.9

Had to roll back to 5.4 as no other worked with bf2 for me :(

Currently back on damn 5.9 and can't be bothered to change. If this isn't cleaned up by 5.10, and nvidia card will be falling through my letterbox no question.

It's not your system.

My specs may be a little bit above yours but I had garbage as a video card recently. The framterate was junk but the game still RAN fine. I get a new video card, and nothing works.

It's definitly DoW not liking it, though why I can't say. This is the ONLY game I've had a problem with.

seems like no website ever archived the mobility 5.6 and 5.7 drivers. They only started archiving from 5.8 onwards(very hard to find but its possible if you search hard for 5.8)

the problem for the mobility ones is that they constantly replace their only download link with the newest version....

The more tickets the higher the chance we get heared and either ATI or Relic responding to it.

shake your fist at us american's all you want... both ATI and Relic are CANADIAN :-p

In either case, it seems that the 5.10 drivers do not fix the issue either. The only reason I haven't actually sat down and gotten good at this game (or really played at all for that matter) is because of this driver issue. I'm not losing performance in all of my other games because of just one game, no matter how much I like it. For me, I've sent my tickets, I made my phone calls (none of which were helpful) and loged my complaints, im ready for some action. I'll just keep playing other games and watching for a fix for this one :\

One thing I found back when is that the Catalyst control center caused all kinds of greif. I HATED IT! I have just loaded the drivers ever since.

Currently I am still running the 4.10 drivers. They work and "if it ain't broke don't fix it" tends to apply to me.

As to drivers, while there seem to be problems with ATI drivers at least you can get newer ones. I have a damn NVidia Go 440 64meg on my Toshiba and there were never any newer "official" drivers released. NVidia says to go t the manufacturer and the newest Toshiba drivers are almost 4 years old. Luckily the hacked NV drivers I have been forced to use work very well and I can run DoW on it.

I am thinking of trying to install just the 5.6 DRIVERS on my system. Won't ever use the damn control center again.

Hi there,
I am new to this forum and i do have a serious problem with the WA demo.
First of all i have to say that i dont have the DOW, or at least not mine.
I had borrowed it a couple weeks ago, from a friend of mine to see if it worth buying it. The game run smoothly. My video card that time was: Asus - N6600 128 mb PCI (nvidia).
Last week, i downloaded the WA demo. In meanwhile i have changed the video card with: X850 256 Mb PCI (ATI) Driver ver. 6.14.10.6505.
Here are the results of the card on the demo
And one more thing to add.
Apart the "obvious" problems i decided to play choosing skirmish and tutorial.
The result was a white Wireframe landscape :gonemad:

Ooops what went wrong?
I have uploaded the in game screens.
I wll try again

I'll toss a potentially dumb idea out there.

I used to play Forgotten Battles, a flight simulator that was built around OpenGL. As most of you are aware, ATI's support of OGL sucks. We were forced to live through several sets of drivers where we couldn't play the game with the highest settings because the OpenGL driver was trashed, and like now, ATI refused to fix it right away.

Because the OpenGL driver from an earlier set of drivers worked well, someone had the idea to extract that particular driver file and put it in the IL2 directory. That way, you could keep the newest driverset installed, but still have the earlier OpenGL driver that actually worked with IL2.

Is there any chance we could do this with DoW? Taking out the 5.6 driver file that works, tossing it somewhere in the DoW directory where the game'll read it?

iniochos: that error is FAR more serious than the problems experienced by people because of the newer drivers. Create a new thread with a warnings.log and dxdiag.

I suspect that your new card may be either overheating or not receiving enough power (or simply be faulty).

With this card i can play:

X2 - the threat,
Freelancer,
Comm & Conq. ZERO HOUR,
Privateer (the very first one),
Earth 2160 and so on.

I have borrowed again the DOW to see if the problem comes only with WA. But the same happens with DOW.

I wanted to confirm something.

FEAR experiences the exact same problem with the new drivers. The EXACT same problem. My frame rate at max setting is consistently at 60 FPS. The PROBLEM is it the stutter. Same as DoW.

So I guess we know whose really at fault, don't we?

Rolling back the old drivers, unfortunatly, is of little consolation to anyone, and I do mean anyone with the new cards. All those who just bought the X800 series--guess wer're just screwed. The 5.6 seem to not work for these things.

Great.

Edit: Rolling back as far as 5.1 has had no apparent effect. In fact, it things to have hurt the frame rate while stuttering still. I can NOT figure this out. Some games it's fine, other it's broken. Apparently the x800XL just isn't working out.

Figured I'd chime in that I'm having this problem with a Radeon 9800 Pro as well. Sounds like the problem is specific to the Radeon 9800 chip (forget what the architecture is called).

Unless I've missed someone chiming in about a non-9800 card malfunctioning. Or perhaps someone has successfully exchanged their card for another ATI model (either upgrade or downgrade) and eliminated the issue?

I've heard a few people say they're going nVidia with their next purchase. I wish I could do the same. I've got an ATI TV Wonder card (I'm watching TV as I write this using that card) which I've heard doesn't play nice with nVidia cards installed.

EDIT: Shoulda finished reading the last page. Errors still exist for newer cards. Bugger. Guess I won't be upgrading any time soon.

ATI has put a new BETA driver set out, the Catalyst 5.10a that fixes the intermitent graphic problems for FEAR and Quake 4, so this may also help all of us with DOW.

I cant put a link in it seems, so just search for Catalyst 5.10a or go to TweakGuides homepage and take a look there!

Hope this helps guys, i cant test it out as my PC with the 9800 Pro in it is not around ATM, so if someone can test it out and report back it will be appreciated!

Cheers,
Immortal
I have read that someone who owns a MSI Neo 2 platinum and a X800XT and had installed 5.10 and his pc couldnt boot anymore, but i don't know if it happens with 5.10a, and this driver is officially for X1000 videocards, but it might give a good performance though.

Thanks for the info about roling back drivers and the Omega drivers.

I only have a RAdeon 9800pro and a 2-3ghz PC with 512 RAM and changing to these drivers now means I can run DoW on full graphics settings with no stutter.
Other games I have also work much smoother now.

I'm running WA on a:

2Ghz Pentium M
1 Gig of ram
Radeon 9700
Omega 5.9
lots of free drive space, no virii or anything else

and it's still stuttering. I found a post (http://forums.relicnews.com/showpost.php?p=1190986&postcount=13) that suggested disabling Vsync. It works, after a fashion, for me. I still get stuttering, especially around water (could this be part of the problem?), but not nearly as bad.

I know that the common solution proposed here it to roll back the driver to 5.6, however SC3 doesn't run work a **** with those drivers on my machine.

Anyway, just my $0.02 :)

ATI has confirmed that there is a problem with DoW and Fear to me in the ticket and they're working on it.

But don't call it studder. The guy was telling me to format and restart my entire computer until I asked him to tell me what the "Known problem with DoW was."

His response was...

That when a certain amount of squads are on the screen, performance takes a huge hit!

You know... like... it pauses every few seconds.

Like a STUTTER.

LIKE I SAID IN THE ORIGINAL TICKET!

Argh.

Anyway, at least I got them to acknowledge it.

Eh so what's your point/conclusion?

Evan_gelion
26th Oct 05, 3:57 PM
That ATI has finally admitted that there is a problem with the recent patches and that they are supposedly fixing it, and that the problem is not with DoW, more or less.

Might Service Pack (2) be the issue ?

First:

Duron1200/512MB/Radeon9600 PRO/Service Pack2 --> Stuttering. On pause it would be smooth as silk.

Then:

Sempron3000/512MB/Radeon9600 PRO/NO Service Pack --> No Stuttering...

Tried same driver versions, didn't make a difference. Only thing worth mentioning might be that 5.6 gives me no stutters on my new system whereas other versions do (though it stuttered WITH 5.6 on the old setup which leads me to believe new driver versions alter a setting that shouldnt be altered). Otherwise, it might either be the new proc/mem/board or some software related issue. But because ppl have reported issues using Semprons and alike i suspect the latter...

Yeye even though ATi has more or less confirmed the issue.

Sirs;

The one thing I've done that made the most difference vis system performance was to go into bios for my MB and raise the voltage for both the cpu and the agp settings.

Not by a lot, mind you, just by a notch for each.

Methinx that a lot of this issue will be determined by individual's particular 'box' settups. Especially when it comes to AMD mboards..........

FatFool is right, this will need serious techies as one solution won't work for all.......

I'm using an ATI 9800 Pro w/ 128 mb, and the latest drivers. (5.10?) What fixed the stuttering problem for me was turning off the AGP Fast Write, AGP Write, and AGP Read. I also turned off the Wait for Vertical Refresh (Vsync).

I remembered this being a fix for Everquest 2 issues with this card.

Hope this helps.

a Radeon 9800pro thingy. I am no expert, but from what I have seen you have to use the conrol suite to set up your card properly and have the latest drivers installed on your motherboard for it. It is not just as easy as installing a new driver..... you HAVE TO UNINSTALL and DUMP the old driver first!
Once the centre is installed adjust and play with it until you get the right settings. What I also noticed is that if you overclock your comp it does not like it too much either. So I dunno, worked for me playing around and keeping my overclocking to below 15%.
It used to stutter around and have jerkey motions but now it is as smooth as a babies bum!

yup all that I did was to download the uninstall catalyst drivers tool to my desktop and then the I did the same for the 5.13 catalyst control suite. I ran the uninstall tool first and my desktop resized and was different settings, (This meant that the old drivers had been removed from my computer). Then I restarted my computer and ran the install control suite.exe file from my desktop. Then I restarted my computer again and fiddled with the settings in the control suite. I have turned of wait for vertical refresh and set the refresh rate to the same as my monitor is.. (85hz) all monitors have different refresh rates etc.. It sounds complicated but it took me about 10 minutes from start to finish.. the game runs great and I have no problems at all. the lighting effects are awesome and the movie looks great! I have mt pc overclocked to 10%. Once I set this I restarted my comp again and ran winter assault no problems at all. Looks fantastic and runs great!

Well it's not that hard but I can understand your concern. If the explanation the previous two posters didnt help you enough, here's a generic way of updating a video driver:

- start --> settings --> config screen --> software --> select ati driver stuff and click 'remove' or whatever its called in ur language;
- confirm all steps until a window pops up that asks u to reboot;
- reboot your system. If all has gone well, u should boot up in a lower resolution with lower display settings. If that's not the case then something may be wrong. In that situation, go to My computer --> properties --> device manager and check the display tab to see if ur previous card has been removed. If not, then repeat procedure from step 1. Usually, if it displays a yellow question mark, it's been succesfully removed.
- Now execute the exe file of ur new driver file and follow steps as needed.

Also, be sure to have at least directx9.0c running (downloadable from either microsoft.com or the DoW cd).

Just don't be afraid to foul up too much. WinXP is a really solid application and it lets u foul up a lot before it goes awal.

Confirming that 6.3 doesn't fix this irritating bug, i've sent a ticket to ATI. As someone said, maybe if there will be more tickets, we'll have the problem solved in less time. It seems that ATI tries to ignore this situation, as it proclaims that the bug is subject to 4 player skirmish map.

Weee! (well not for me though :loco: )

Download Ati Catalyst 6.4 drivers here (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1374).

The new Ati drivers are released, and should fix "the" fps problem..I think..:

WARHAMMER: DAWN OF WAR: Starting a skirmish game on a 4 player map under Windows XP, no longer results in the game performance appearing choppy when using an ATI Radeon® X800 series, and having all of the game options set to high. Further details on this resolved issue can be found in topic number 737-20974

I have installed them and no fix for me :flamer: .
I run win2k though, but like to know if it fixes the "lag"/"low fps at a small batle" or whatever for persons who had the problem with it like me (X800XT PE) and not the 9800 owners cause that seemed to be resolved by turning v-sync off, and that's not the case with my card, and others.

So test away, and let me/us know, if Ati screwed up! ;)
And if it didn't work but you solved it by changing something in the game or whatever please tell that also ;)

Btw, the only warning I get is this and don't seem to have any relations with the problem I guess?

Im using CAT 6.4 with x800xtpe as well and havnt noticed any major improvement with .. have'nt tested with fraps tho

In my experince turning vsync does help the x800xtpe you can see the difference when you play an asm spammer or when alot of units are in battle.

I was hoping this fix would mean you could turn shadows up to high.. 6.4 hasnt improved this for me.

From reading on the rage3d.com forums, it seems that it's not the graphics card/drivers that give choppy gameplay, it is the developer's game code and/or the system being CPU-limited. By CPU-limited they mean your CPU,system bandwidth etc. Oblivion is having a similar problem, where ppl have the lastest most expensive hardware and still get 20FPS in some areas. It is quite well-known that Dawn of War is very CPU-dependent, go figure..

In my case, I'll wait for quad-core CPU's and a corresponding patch from Relic to make use of it.. to get the liquid FPS (60FPS+ screen packed heavy battle) Im looking for @ 1280x960 and above with 4xaa, 16af, v-sync on, shadows on high.

I wonder how the 7900GTX's, 1900XTX's with highest-end CPU's run this game ? Do they boost FPS to high levels (60+) during screen packed Tier2/3 battles ?

Man thanks for this reply, this is a very important one!
From the beginning I thought the problem was at the game code so RELIC, and not ATI.
Now we can start nagging at Relic, to fix this ASAP...(I wanted to place some swear words here but i wont do that) ;) .

Can you immagine I semi bought this pc to play DOW at nice fps but I can't even play the game at 20 fps or more (even with all settings to the lowest POSSIBLE!) when in a small battle this is just IN-SANE!

So please, please, please Relic fix this.
Or I am throught with it!
This is a really serious issue.
It's like the opposite world, you gotto have a low spec pc to run the game smooth but a high spec pc to run it choppy.

What can I do for you to get this fixed Relic? ;)

Seems a bit sad to post something like this, but all the time I/we was messing around with the drivers and while it's not even a driver problem.

OK.. the CPU 'limt' does makes sense..
But I'm still to explain how both DOW and WA, run with the same crap FrameRate
on 2 of my older PCs:
one being an old Pentium3 with an Nvidea 5200
and the other a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz with a Rodeon 9600!
Surely the Pentium 4 should give better results!!

Then on my current 2.6Ghz Pentium 4 with HT and Nv6600 it runs on everything HIGH.
So I still believe ATI got things to fix......

One more thing...

Has anyone tried if there are compatibility problems with SoundCards drivers??
I'm still to find time and test it.. but i'm getting the impresion that DOW don't like much build-in motherboard sound-cards...

..especially the Realtek

Well I have tried to turn off audio acceleration, but that doesn't work.
I have onboard audio and that is turned off in the bios.
And I have a Soundblaster platinum 2 ZS.

But from what I have tested I don't think it's caused by the soundcard, onboard or not.

I thought the 9800 pro solution was to turn vsync off and that was working before 6.4
But anyhow it didn't solved it for me while my card (x800) is even named in the issue part of the driver log from ati.
So that is really odd.

Hm, very strange so now the X800 series need to be fixed..unless someone already got it to work and has a X800 serie videocard?

EDIT: Btw, so you installed 6.4 but did you just install driver only, or with Control Panel, or with Catalyst Control Center?
And what are your settings like, A.I.(off/advanced/standard), Resolution (ingame and desktop), refreshrate (ingame and in control panel/center), Agp speed (8x -> 4x or just 4x) etc etc.

Cause one small change might be the solution.

EDIT2: I just did another test.
- I have set all settings in the Catalyst Control Center to performance.
- Desktop settings: 1280x1024 85hz / agp8x / Vsync always off.
I also tried 800x600 16bit as desktop, but the same result.

This is my local.ini config for WA (note: disabled sound):

This the ingame result, and that with my specs :disagree: :

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2gig memory
Asus X800XT PE 256mb
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS

And the "funny" thing about this is that if I set all settings to the highest possible my fps gets just a bit lower...

As you can see at the top right corner 20 fps (and that is about the max) (image is original size) :wowsers:

Although I had 20fps the gamespeed was really fast, and while I set it as normal so the game runs really fast (too fast) with these settings but it's still choppy :banghead:

I doubht even a x1900xtx would solve the issue, we need quad-core CPU's to smoothly deal with all the units on-screen. I use x800xtpe (580/1200), p4 prescott 3.6, 1gig ddr400 Dual Channel (2-3-3-6).

I get good FPS in heavy battles with medium shadows and terrain. Everything else is maxed out including the high res textures tweak. (1280x960 6xAA 16xAF vsync off)

Note, if you use vsync on, you get a touch more lag during gameplay. Its a small amount but it is noticable.

Did you checked the fps or did you just felt it had good fps.
Also can you tell met what you changed or installed for ati drivers etc., so I might solve it too. You can also pm me if you want.

3v3 will be far more CPU intensive than 1v1 which is what I mainly play. This is why you are in the 20fps range. Didnt check my FPS with fraps cause I didnt need too, I can tell if it's enough fps by the smoothness of the animations. It's prolly around 40-60fps during tier2/tier3 heavy battles 1v1.

Using cat6.4 with Ati Tray Tools with AF optimisation turned on, cat a.i off, geometry instancing on.

You didn't read the most important post I presume.
There are people who play the game with high settings and I guess at least 2vs2 with normal fps, with a much lower specs then my pc!
So 3vs3 can be more CPU intensive but if pc's with (much) lower specs can play 3vs3 or 2vs2 with no performance issues, well then I must have none at 3vs3.

And btw, if I play 3vs3 with all settings to lowes, and I mean the LOWEST possible, even then I get about the same fps so what you are saying isn't what is causing the problem.

Well I really like to hear from the devs themself what a normal fps is for 3vs3.

BESERKER, I havent read much earlier posts, but can you provide specific examples of these lower spec'ed machines getting good fps in 3v3 heavy-battles ?

My deduction remains that is a combination of CPU limitation and game coding, much like newly released Oblivion. I think DoW would really benefit from using a physics card to handle this area in the game, thus taking a huge load off the CPU. This may be another option.

RODNiC, thanks for the feedback, if other's reading here can do the same that would be helpful.

I just played 2vs2 LAN game and it ran ok, but even then on those small maps i could notice some performance drops, and my pc should really have ran the game smooth.
It seemes smoother ingame than if I would use fraps, but still I know it should run smoother then it does now.

Here some quotes from people who seem to have no probs anymore, well that was because they turned off vsync and installed newer drivers, but the problem isn't solved for all cards yet, like the X800 series:

I've been playing with 5.11 on my 9600 Pro and it has been working excellent. I think it might have even improved the frame rates, but that could be my luck with non-laggers.

Problem solved with 9800XT aswell.

Radeon 5.11 solved stuttering issues and improved framerate - I have a 9800 Pro 128MB.

I tried it first without disabling v-sync and it seemed to still do fine. Turned it off just to be sure though. I might do some more experiments to see if it makes a difference now.

And here is a quote which prooves the sillyness of the problem:

mmm.. I got a 9600 Pro on my older system and didn't really fix anything for me..
I re-instaled my older Nvidia 5200 and is damn smoother! (use this system only for home Lan gaming)

Thank God on my Gaming PC I have a 6600 that works more then fine.....

OKi.. here are the DxDiag of my ATI 6900Pro PC...

Can't figure out whild my VERY OLDER P3 800Mhz with N5200 and 360Mb of old Ram is playing Dawn Of War smoother!!!!

It would be better if anyone who posts his performance to note the following!!:
- Fraps or own feeling
- 1vs1, 2vs2, 3vs3, online, skirmish
- Control Center/ ATT settings
- Graphic settings in the game (and i mean every setting, also vsync and hires_teamcolor etc)
- Dawn of War and/or Winter Assault

Hi again BESERKER,

Thanks for the quotes. All of the quotes except the last one (I'l talk about that in a minute) are quite low-end systems so for them 20-50fps might be smooth for their gaming needs. Especially because they have low-end systems in the first place will mean they dont have particularly high gaming quality needs. This would be disproved if those ppl could provide contradicting fraps numbers in 3v3 with screen-full-action.

The last quote, 1st part, the user may not of uninstalled all the nvidia stuff correctly when he installed his new 9600pro, this would explain the poorer performance also why the 5200 was smoother when re-installed. And this is only one possibilty of many as to why the 9600pro was running slower when all benchmarks on the internet prove otherwise.

Well you can be right, but I don't think you are.
I think it's really bad for RELIC/THQ/ATI for not letting us know anything about this issue!

And btw, after a clean install of windows, and DOW I have the same problems as I have now so I can say in my case it doesn't make a difference, and think it's the same for others.
And I have tried really all you can imagine.

Hm I have a recorded demo I could make public for fps bench, or if someone has a better/more reliable benchmark?

But we can bench all we can to get more detailed info, but I really think something is wrong with the game and need to be fixed.

I personally think that it can't be fixed cause if it could we should have had some more info from RELIC or THQ already.
I really don't get it, why don't they even say something like "we are a ware of the problem, and/or and working on it".

Im not trying to be right but I may be. ;)

I upgraded from a 9800pro to x800xtpe for the purpose of giving a fps boost to all my games and especially DoW. I was surprised to learn that it didnt improve DoW 'low-fps" situations as much as I hoped, so yeah I know first hand about this problem.

Also, Nvidia cards are known to handle shadows better than ATi cards, ie, doom3 etc. This is why shadows on medium is recommended by ATi.

Let me make it clearer about the 9600 system (since it's mine that Quote) hehe

The 9600 Drivers where installed on a NEW and CLEAN Windows installation... I only instaled the NVidia drivers after noticing what a crap performance to test what was wrong..

The problem still exits.. the P3 800Mhz with N5200 runs smoother then P4 2.4 with ATI9600...
Surely Fraps will show that the P3 has at MAX 20FPS with everything set on low.. but it's still more playable then the jerky P4 with ATI!

(PS. I'm still to try the 6.04 drivers... the ATI currently have 6.03 OMEGA- Vsync OFF)

update:

dow and wa are very shader processing heavy for medium and high levels of shadows. lets remember these games were developed on nvidia's 6800 series, which give better performance in shader related game software, ie. quake4.

ati users with X1800 (16 pixel shader pipes) cards and earlier will gain a significant performance increase by turning shadows to low. (ati recommends setting shadows to medium, lol).

i usually set shadows to medium then as soon as the action gets very heavy and you move to places in the map where shadows are being used.. the performance drops very fast. setting to low eliminates this problem for me. the image quality loss from turning to low is negligable imo, the blocky looking shadows for vehicles and such dont exactly look great anyway. Those with X1900 (48 pixel shader pipes) in theory should be able to set shadows to high.

if shadows set to low i recommend using vsync.

In the release notes of Catalyst 6.4 they said the "choppy gameplay" when shadows in DoW were set to max was solved. And indeed, when I installed those drivers, gameplay was smoother while setting the shadows to high. I don't know if the problem comes back with the latest drivers (they're at 6.5 right now I believe). Somebody might take the time to check that out...I'll be keeping these (so that's Catalyst 6.4 for all you DoW players with ATi hardware).

I cant think of any good reason why the fix would only be temporary, I assume you have checked to make sure vsync hasnt been turned back on by some meddling software?

Anyway, try the old 5.6 catalyst drivers.

For those still wondering why ATi cards give very low minimum FPS with shadows turned on, here's why ,

"ATI’s cards offer a very small speed reserve in resolutions above 1024x768 because this game uses stencil shadows, requires a high texturing speed, yet keeps within the framework of DirectX 8.0"

source: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/evga-7900gt_16.html

Nvidia cards have technonlgy to deal with stencil shadows where as ati obviously do not at this time of posting. So until ati releases a driver or new card that can handle these stencil shadows, or until Relic changes the games engine.. Nvidia cards are the better performers for decent minimum FPS with shadows.

Thanks for the info mate!
This is something I've been waiting for, a good explenation.
But not sure what stencil shadows are well at least what that stencil part means.

It seems to only occur when the game is playing, but when for example the game is over and is "pauzed" you can view the map and units, but if I go to the same spot where I had the fps drop now it's gone, and I can scroll as smooth as hell and even with the same units in it.
