View Full Version : [P&M] Relic Forums Conversion/Painting Competition Voting Pt1

The first phase of the Relic Forums conversion and painting contest is complete. All pics are in and at the time of this post only Random Person has not supplied a description of his work but hopefully he'll have it in soon.
Seeing as how the painting phase will be finished pretty quick, I think it's time to go ahead and start the vote for the bare conversions.
With the last contest we only gave 4 days for the voting. I don't see any reason to limit it to anything less than a week. So we'll give it until a week from today.
Tinweasel if you could sticky this until the voting is over and perhaps lock this thread afterwords it would be much appreciated.
Thanks go out to cfoley for hosting the pics for this competition. Thanks to fifth_horseman for coming up with this whole idea and kicking it off. And thanks to everyone who participated.
Everyone spent alot of time producing some very cool conversions for this and they all look great IMO.
Well then let's get on with it. Let the voting commence.

Pictures linked here (http://www.wh40k.co.uk/relic/comp02/)!

LMAO! Leave it to me to overlook the most important detail. Luckily I have Tin to bail me out. Thanks man.

Pics are up here (http://www.wh40k.co.uk/relic/comp02/). Unforgiven, you might want to put this link in the first post for people who haven't been following the submissions thread. I'll vote when I am less tired.

Um...its all in one page...not that hard really.

This was a hard choice. Ap0k's super bike captain was really nice and composed. It just worked so well.

However Unforgiven's Squat champion just had a special...something that I like a lot. And that's why I choose it. :)

I had to go with whats_true's model. IT just completely boggles my mind on how he was able to a. think of such a crazy idea, and b. model it properly.

Mad props true!

Yep. I'm retarded. I forgot that people might actually want to see what they are voting on. LOL. Luckily Tin knows that I'm "special" and took care of it for me.
Now I'm going to go take my pills.

I.. I dunno what to do....
I mean, seriously.. I like 'em all.
My only complaint is that I thought it was gonna be a 40mil max base, otherwise I woulda done a 60mil diorama like Thalin...
Meh, whatever.
I'm loving that biker captain.. I may do one for my Blood angels on a similar idea.. But damnit Tin, a Dark Apostle? one of my favorite units in the game.. in termie armor.. simple premisis to pull off, and I guarantee it'll look awesome when painted up...
ARGH!!

My vote goes to Ap0k, though there all brilliant it was finally between Ap0k and whats_true, though if whats_true had better pics it might of gone the other way.

Much as I'd like to say voting was an easy decision, it wasn't. Even the less "flamboyant" figures like Mig Mek's and Random Person's are well done.

It essentially came down to Ap0k's biker SM Captain and what's_true's "Rath of the Wolf" in a tie for my vote and Unforgiven's and Thalin's figures in a tie for close second. Basically looking for neatness and overall cleanness of design, I had to run with Ap0k's figure. Try as I might to sharpen up what's_true's pics to make out detail work, I just couldn't - I went with what appeared to be the "smoothest"-looking conversion out of the bunch, IMO.

How is voting for yourself viewed?

I can't vote yet because I haven't actually had time to read everyones descriptions!

Ap0k: His conversion is perfect, IMO the sheer creativity and ingenuity it displays put it above the conversion Boltman once did for his Magmathrax - and that's got to say something. The model does also have an awesome sense of action, something that puts him right in the middle of a battlefield.
My vote goes here.

Cfoley: The conversion is something pretty rare as for the concept itself, the execution is fairly smooth, but at the same time it lacks anything that would attract my attention enough to put my vote. Still it's a pretty decent piece of work, and you should be proud of having such a unique Genestealer conversion.

Mig Mek: Altough there is little work on this miniature, it's pretty solid for your first conversion job. Maybe not a contest winner, but it's still a small victory in itself. Keep improving.

Random Person: Not much of a conversion there, mate. Spear is not bad, but the greenstuffing around it could be cleaner.

Thalin: Good diorama, but it feels like it could use some additional work, especially on reposing the miniatures.

Tinweasel: Nice one. I like what you did with the GS-ing and the plasticard spikes. Keep em coming!

Unforgiven: That's a brilliant conversion if I ever saw one. Dwarves in space, indeed! However, Squats just aren't my bandwagon.

Whats_true: I see where you were coming from, making the vortex and the wolf to stay right must've been a real nightmare. But the result is, IMO, rather worth the effore you spent on achieving it. However, being unable to see any better photographs of this piece, I cannot really say too much on the quality of the actual conversion (altough from what I can see, it looks fairly awesome). Sorry, mate.

How is voting for yourself viewed?

In the painting comp voting for yourself would have resulted in expulsion from the comp (and any votes already gathered being excluded from the final tally), so I'd imagine a similar principle here would work.

I've voted, but I'll put down a detailed reasoning later tonight or tomorrow, since I'm on my afternoon tea break at the min and pressed for time.

Ap0k, I love it.

Mine is relativly bad, I just wanted to be in the contest.

Eventually it came down to Ap0k's and whats_true's conversions, both are excellent conversions, despite the low quality of the pictures, my vote went to whats_true. I just felt that his conversion was more innovative and extremely impressive in the creation. I felt that Thalin's was good, but the pose of the traitor marine was a bit off, it looks like he is resting on something that isn't there.

I really like SM captain on th e bike...quality stuff right there, but thalin's diorama is pretty compelling so Im with him.

It has been difficult for me to choose, I've been trying to decide for a couple of days now. Some conversions are very impressive, and some are truly original ideas.

I was trying to make my mind up between whats_true's and cfoley's conversion, and I decided to go with the genestealer hybrid. Originality influenced the decision a lot, and the bits used by cfoley come from totally unrelated models, probably posing a challenge in keeping scale, balance and symmetry right.

I also liked Tinweasel's and Unforgiven's conversions a lot, and they made my final choice so difficult to settle upon.

Tinweasel and fifth_horseman displayed great GS sculpting skills, and I have no doubt that their conversions will look great once painted.

Ap0k's work is outstanding, that pose must have been nearly impossible to get right. The main reason I didn't vote for Orelius is that I've got this mental image of space marines being the warrior monks of the 40th millenium, and this "born to be wild" pose is too far off from what I picture space marines to be like. I'm not trying to extenuate the work he put into his conversion, and I hope I don't sound rude, I'm just being honest.

I was going to make some detailed post here about expressing my opinions on everyones entry and why I voted for the one I did. After looking at everyones conversions (again), I decided against it. They all look fantastic. Choosing one as "the best" over the rest is truelly just a matter of opinion.
However I do know that Tinweasel has been waiting for someone to comment on his first real GS job. :) Personally Tin, I think you did an outstanding job. Especially considering you've had hardly any experience with it. Or so you say. Because now I'm beginning to wonder. HA! j/k. Seriously though, that's top notch work.
In the end I had to go with whats_true. The extensiveness of the conversion combined with the originality and imagination it took to come up with something like that is amazing. I'm really looking forward to seeing it painted.
cfoley if whats_true hadn't put those clearer pics up you would have gotten my vote if that's worth anything. Your conversion was still my wife's favorite regardless.
Excellent job to all though.

Finally, someone noticed those. :)

Tin did do a amasing job on the GS. Mad scill there.

OK well some very good entries in this competition, all are special in their own way, so a very well done to everyone!

Ap0k I think your conversion is very good, the pose especially. I really like the way he is standing half of his bike ready to make the kill, however I feel his bike has too much 'weight' on the Space Marine, and i'm not too sure if he would be able to stand the way he does without the bike toppling over! I only think this however from a couple of the pictures, maybe it's just the angle they are. Very well done on the power pist grasping the bike handle and all the extra bits on the bike. It's a very good conversion and you should be pleased with it!

CFoley, not bad. I really like the way you've used bits from 'off' the hobby, and put arms from the game onto the model. They go really well together. The pose is very good, he looks like he is walking/running, and this is very well done. However, the head of the model looks like it could have used a bit more work. Maybe some extra additons like lumps and things to the top of his head would have made an already good model even better. Well done with your entry!

Fifth Horseman, not a bad entry here! I really like the use of green stuff on the model, it looks really effective, even if there are some bits that didn't really need it :) I like the way you've made it look like an Iron Angel with the green stuff, and I also like the other bits you've added, like the antenna and grenade. If I was to make a criticism though it would be the pose. It just looks a bit boring the way he's standing, the position of the grenade arm could have been better to make it look like the Marine is in action rather than standing still etc! Anyway, a very good entry, well done!

Mig Mek, I like your entry because of the use of both Warhammer and 40k pieces being used, and I think they work really well together. I especially like the backpack, it's very evil looking! I also like the way you've kept it relatively simple in the pose, and I think it will look great when painted, so i'm looking forward to that. For your first conversion, it's good, and you should be pleased.

Random Person, not a bad entry however the green stuff on the spear could have been neater. The hand also on the spear looks quite strange, although that might just be the angle of the photo. Apart from that, it's a good entry, I like the use of the shield and other small bits you've added. I like the way you've kept it simple, and it should look very good once it has been painted. Well done.

Tinweasal, not a bad entry at all, I like the use of the metal wires and the vintage look of the model! However, the green stuff makes the model look somewhat uncomfortable in that the body looks to squashed, especially around the face. The torso could also have had more work done, but I do like the spikes, that must have taken ages to do! I also really like his staff, can't wait to see it painted. Well done!

Unforgiven, the thing with your conversion is that your either going to like it, or your not. I think it's a very original idea and works well, however there are some things I don't like, such as the pose of the model, with his leg up on the rock, in one of the shots it looks quite like teddy bear :). I also think the weapons he is carrying are too big for him, especially the axe! However, it is a very funny model and I sure will remember it! Good work on the green stuff, and also his mechanical leg, also the head was a good choice and it fits the model well.

Whats_True, my vote goes with you. It's a good model all around. I really like the idea and it's very original, and is executed perfectly. I don't know what you used for the 'magic' around the wolf, but it looks great. I love the wolf jumping from the spell, and also the use of green stuff, very neat and nicely done. My only criticism in the hand that's holding the staff, it just looks a bit strange, but should look better once it's painted I think. A very good entry here, well done to you, and once again, well done to everyone.

Whats_True: my vote goes to you. I've been thinking of doing a librarian conversion with the psychic power visible/coming out of his hand. However, I haven't had time. As a side note, you'd probably get more votes if you had bigger pictures. hte clearer pictures are better, but still not big enough to see detail.

whats_true... you are the winner in my mind... alovely conversion... you leave my ind toying with the possible paint scheme you will hopefully pull off...

why not add some water waves or something like that if you say hes in the water, like the waters being pushed away from the energy of the wolf thing... just an idea

Thats exacly what i was going to do. You see, the initial scene in my mind was him standing half in a muddy lake, thats why he in on a slope.

The voting is over. Ap0k, damn you, we need to ban you from further competitions so the rest of us stand a chance. j/k. Congrats on a well deserved victory.
Great job to everyone and thanks for taking part.

Perhaps not a complete ban. We could should all the votes by (competitions won +1). Only joking.

Well, congratulations to everybody, especially Ap0k and whats_true who got the lions share of the votes. Your entries were certainly in a different league. However, the rest of the conversions were also great. Unfortunately, the voting system hasn't given enough votes to let us rank them but I think everyone has done themselves proud.

It will certainly be interesting to see the painted models. I hope that everyone who has pulled out of this second stage will show us their completed models when they do get them finished.

@Unf and cfoley - :'(

@all - Thanks guys (and girls? Do they come here? I don't know o_O). I'm currently going hell for leather to get him painted in time, but, fingers crossed, he'll be ready (time to prepare the sicky for Friday/Monday in preparation for overnight painting insanity).

I'll not ramble on about how I didn't expect it (I didn't, but it sounds so damn cliché), so I'll just leave it at that. Congratulations everybody on a job well done, and I think I'll be left wondering how different the result would have been if whats_true had the good pics up from the start (ace conversion by the way dude).

Just before I head off into the sunset, I'll make a quick comment on why I voted for fifth_horseman.

GREENSTUFF. My god man. Fantastic job with the stuff. I can truly appreciate how much of a pain in the ass that stuff is to work with, and you did an amazing job with it. The little DA logo on the chest was what really hit home for me. Fiddliest little detail you can imagine, not even *really* necessary, but you did it, and you did it damn well. Original concept, and very very well executed, and thats why my vote was yours.

Other than explaining my vote, I'll not go any further into specific conversions. Everyones was a pleasure to look at in some way or anothere, whether by GS'ing, posing, originality or just lots of cool bits.

Well done all, and thanks again to everyone who voted for me. It feels quite an honour.
