View Full Version : [MOD] Dark Eldar : Dire need of Community Help (see last few posts)

Hi everyone,
I'm proud to present our Relic Unit: The Warp Beast Predator, modelled by OLY and textured by the talented Dr. Grim.
Captured by the most skilled of beastmasters, these larger variants of warp beasts are used in the most deadliest of arena fights on Commoragh. Only the strongest and cunning beasts survive these battles.
After their time in the arena, the surviving beasts are brought to a Haemonculus, where they receive their "enhancements". These "enhancements" have a dual purpose:
- They provide extra armour and allow for more powerful melee attacks. Only the weaker parts of the body are reinforced, so they beast won't lose its agility and speed (being two key assets to the dark eldars' art of war).
- At the same time, they augment combat endurance. When suffering from heavy wounds, combat drugs are injected into the brain via the headpiece. The beast will temporally ignore all damage done and inflame in a berzerker fury.

Mod related news: We are still looking for a good coder with knowledge of the AE and the OE. AE coding is mostly done, it only requires DC transfer and some extra abilities. OE still offers lot’s of fun ;)

Yup everyone is working hard. The warrior is looking a bit goofy atm because it isn't textured yet. Other then that, we the Reaver Jetbike modelled and the Talos, Incubi and Slaves are near completion.

Most of the DoW/WA faction mods coming out have high enough polys + cost of PC Hardware is criminally cheap - just built a mid-to-high end system + high end 19" LCD w/ wireless mouse/keyboard for $1618 w/15% Canadian Taxes! Amazing! You guys never had it soo good.. I remember back in the day (grouch walking with cane) when high end machines were $5000 and that was the price of just looking at the darn thang! :D

Okay, this is looking as nice as the screenies for CLR's Necron Mod was looking. The Necron Mod had the light show that we all love so much, but in this mod unlike the Necron Mod, the Dark Eldar aren't turtles but ninjas.
I hope that some of these mod makers will actually take their mods to the final product, instead of a lot of the mods being vaporware.
This Dark Eldar Mod is a new mod for me to get my hopes up. Looking good so far -- keep my fingers crossed that they keep going.

The interface looks way better than the early alpha one you had..

LMAO no those mandrakes are not topless lol, although for the pervs among you if you angle the camera right you can see down her top (not sure why you'd want to its only a 3d model lol). The best thing about doing this mod is that we can look at the tabletop miniatures and say quite frankly they sucked, so we get to revamp in quite a way that makes them cool again :D i'm happy with it, wait til you see the scourges and hellions ;) they is the bees knees man!

yeah they all have animations, but they're only the basics for most of them, seeing as i'm not a very good animator lol i only give them the basics to get by with ingame. Until we find a hard core amazing animator to give them truly sickly animations that befit the dark eldar then this is how they shall stay :( although with the amazing work that catwell produces i'm sure finding an animator to do that wont be too hard!

army painter is a big issue at the moment, we've got no one that can do it, i'm pretty sure voice overs have been done, however i dont have them and they arent ingame yet although i remember hearing testers. Couple of weeks before forums back up i reckon, not sure about that!

Would recommend try your best with custom animations but thankfully the default one will work fine for now. Custom stuff can come later..
As for AP - yeaaa I'm kinda shocked how challenging it is finding someone to do layers and alpha channels for the AP. I mean.. its hard enough to texture models but AP'ing then seems to be in demand by the teams.

Last update for a while from me whilst i move house lol, again. This is the hellion, we thought the gw minis looked a tad rubbish so we gave him a bit of a lift, personally i think he looks much better, think green goblin but with more armour and insanely intent on ripping your heart out and disemboweling you.

@Blackfang: Very, very, very excellent work. I was a bit scared months ago that you could have big issues to finish your mod. But so far, it seems that you are in position to make progress. I am happy about that.
And for AP matters, the AS mod will be more than happy to help you on this if you need advices to implement WTPs from your current textures. We had the same types of issues before...

Umm, if all you need is for someone to take a finished RSH and make TC layers, that's no problem for me. I'm really stretched for time lately, but this honestly doesn't take me hardly any time at all.
I just feel that I may be misunderstanding what you need, since this seems really simple to me... :Puppy:

Unit on the far right is the warrior, i think there's the sybarite in that unit too not sure though. The models are done by a chap called catwell and he textured them too, I just had to make sure they got from 3dsmax into the game. Although getting animations and such to fit is quite tricky lol however they only have basic animations at the moment but i'm slowly filling them out as I go.

Although having said that the scourges and warriors both have 2 different heads it's just i haven't got round to doing it yet lol, so you may like the other head better.

Yep. Buildings is the next step. We had a topic about it on the Dark Eldar Mod forums in which some members provided some nice concept art. Keep an eye on it when the forums are back up (approx. 2 weeks).

Good work Dark Eldar team! It is very pleasing to see such massive updates. Especially now, since you made progress on all levels. The warriors and the warrior sybarite are great, they feel really evil and merciless. The scourges are good too, except for their yellow beaks...that is too birdy, a recolour would be enough. The hellion is very different to GW's design :( The Incubi are perfect, even with an Incubi miniature next to the screen ;) The archon is crazy-good, despite that his design unknown to me, he fits the Dark Eldar in every way. Congratulations for your progress. Best wishes for the future.

The reason we changed the design of the lord and hellions was because we thought the gw miniatures could really do with an overall, and dawn of war allowed us to do just that, change their design to something a little more pleasing, the scourges will have random helmets soon enough as well, they have 2 helmet designs plus their sybarite.

While that particular story is fan
Harlies work with Craftworld, Exodite, Pirate and Dark Eldar. The only Eldar they don't work with are Crone World (chaos) eldar.
So throwing Harlies as a DE choice would make perfect sense from a fluff perspective.

I have a suggestion for this mod. Have grotesques do massive damage but very little armour penetration, but give the haemoculus an ability called "misfortune" which weakens all nearby enemy armour, making them an effective pair.

Hey, a few suggestions on my part - I always thought of the Dark Eldar as a harrassing race, they are insanely fast but physically weak. They really have no interest in attacking a fortified base - they are safe from everybody but Slaanesh in their city between planes of existence. The only reason they come out of it is to take prisoners to torture, in torturing them they expose their souls to Slaanesh, who drinks the souls slowly, and since Slaanesh is busy with the prisoners, it doesn't bother the Dark Eldar.
So most likely if given a choice, the Dark Eldar are going to warp in on a lightly defended outpost rather than a Space Marine base, thought they would probably still fight if not given a choice. That brings me to my suggestions - they should probably have some sort of bonus for taking out listening posts and decapping enemy requisition points. That would make them a good harrassing race. I was thinking they get less requisition on a point to point basis, but they get some sort of "pillaging bonus", that is, they get requisition for taking out enemy buildings, and they get moreso for taking out listening posts. It sounds kind of fluffy, that's why they don't get requisition quickly, but it'd be cool. In team games they are going to annoy the heck out of everybody, like pirates should, and in 1v1 games the enemy is going to do what they would probably do - heavily defend their outposts away from their main base...as they know that's where the pirates will strike.
That's my main point, but I had a few other ideas...with the introduction of Dark Crusade we have witnessed a mobile HQ - the Monolith. Dark Eldar probably wouldn't build bases, they have no need to hold land. Again - they have Commorragh, which is inside the Webway and out of harms way. They just need to warp in, take prisoners, and warp out. That said - this is the same reason that the developers are having a hard time doing the Tyranids, who also have no reason to build bases. However I agree that there needs to be a place to build things. They need a place to put the slaves they gather so they are in one spot when they warp back, so I think the main building should be a "Slave Caravan" of some sort. All of the Dark Eldar warp into the slave hunt on the caravan, which explains the phenomena of how it can "build". It would probably be lightly armed, as it's just a transport vessel, but be mobile. Far more mobile than a monolith but still nowhere near a jetbike. It's mobility IS the Dark Eldar's greatest defense, the enemy will have to hunt it down with scouts, unlike stationary bases. It will probably have to travel with escorts though.
Lastly - enemy workers should be enslavable, simply because. If you successfully enslave them, and bring them to the caravan, you get a requisition bonus as well...just because that's what Dark Eldar are supposed to do. That'll make those gretchins scared to leave their camps. Mwahaha. Hrm, enslaved by the orks or enslaved by the Dark Eldar, which would be better? I'd probably pick the orks, atleast they'd kill you quickly.
I've been poking around with the lua scripts, do you guys need any help in that department? I have a bit of coding experience...so if you do just let me know. I can't wait to see you guys succeed with this.

That has been changed. The idea was essentially good, but an ability was bugged and the design of mutilated slaves fitted more for grotesques. The Haemonculus now fulfills the role as builder unit. Like the Enginseer Techpriest, it will perform quite well in battle too.

Hey, thx for the positive feedback everybody. I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone involved. I know this is a bit unconventional and it might not be the best place to do it. Again, sorry if it bothers anybody.
This unit gave me a very hard time for a few reasons, but I had a few friends who helped me with advices, critics, bashing, and permissive spamming on their hard drives so we could discuss what work and what did not (don't ask about what didn't). I must have reworked the unit 3 times or more, and the belly armor section took forever as I wanted something "cool". I just wanted to give the Dark Eldar fans something they could like. Sorry again if some of you think I drifted off fluff texture-wise and for some changes in the model's geometry. All of this happened thx to the following persons:
Triceron: For bashing where it hurt the most and for helping me with awesome suggestions. Although you suck and wish you eat some of .....just kidding. Tool :P
Goldo_o: For some advices that helped when i needed them.
Tyconius: For being patient. Really.
Daniel "Chewie" Urbaez: For providing live high res surgery pictures as references. For making me puke a few as well. For being supportive.

Well, there has been no word from our OE coder (Blackfang) for some months. Which means there is a lot of material waiting to get ingame. Plus, it's always easier to put finished content in a build, then storing it somewhere else.
Right now, me and Dr. Grim are focussing on the buildings. And thanks to Thud, we have some extra people working on animations for certain units. Then again, I hope that their real life doesn't have to interfere as much, which was the case with some previous teammembers. Let's cross our fingers shall we...

OK need some help here.
I play DE TT. Thats all I play because they are by far in my opinion the coolest race. I have not bothered with DoW because of the lack of DE. Am I understanding that DE are going to be introduced? Will they be playable or just NPC? What do I need to own to get them?
I stumbled on this forum looking for updates on DE for tt and am too affraid to hope I would be able to play them online.

This is an unofficial mod team who are doing their best to bring the Dark Eldar army to DoW. It will be playable offline, and online if both players have it installed. You will need Dow, and either Winter Assault or Dark Crusade (triple pack just out btw, £18 in the UK) depending on which features they want to use. However DC is probably your best bet.
It's not finished yet, and we don't know when it will be. Looks very good though!

Well, the game comes with its online material, and you'll probably have to own ATLEAST vanilla and WA for this to work. But if you'd only play it for DE, it'd be best to wait for the mod to come out.
There are many other mods out there already, so maybe you might try to broaden your horizon, hm?

Well. I must say while the Necrons have the coolest fluff Dark Eldar certainly fit my playing style more in the TT. Been watching the mod for a while and I must say it has come quite a way from when i first saw it. Looking forward to a release guys.

@UnDirector: No, those are most definitely not my models! I'm not for sure who exactly did the models or the textures, I just made them team-colourable (and added optional specular maps, for extra flair!).
Also, keep in mind that those are from an earlier internal release, and are certainly out-of-date! If you look back earlier in this thread, you will find much better textures, and several more units.
I had spoken with Tyconius, and had offered to make WTP's for the DE units, and was waiting on more "raw material", so this is hopefully to show that I'm serious, and keep the fire burning.
To clarify: I'm not on the mod team, I'm just doing what I can to help this monster get released! :awesome:

Its a hell lot easier to enter any community for any modded PC game and just demand /ask for something then to stay in ONE or a few communities and work your way up the "modding ladder" and understand what PC game modding requires. Plus, young people these days demand "instant gratification" and have a warped sense of "entitlement" so they wish things be done faster and faster. Hard reality will set in pretty quick on them someday that the world can only move so fast.
Regardless, Tyco, BlackFang, and the rest of the team are doing their collective damnest to get the Dark Eldar done.

Maybe you should ask a little more politely. Asking them in the largest font size possibly will not make it any faster (and its just annoying). You have to remember that modding is hard work and its usually done in ones' spare time.

Tyco is busy it seems. There seems to be work going on (look at the official DE website for info). Tyco might make an annoucement that he needs someone with the same firey passion for everything DarkEldar to lead the project as he is too busy.
DoW Community - to whomever has some time and loves and knows everything that is Dark Eldar please step forward and we'll get you in contact with Tyco. There is ALOT of pre-done DE work long since complete but to see it to its logical end we need people in the community to conclude the project. I can get 3d people if need be to help out but Team Leads are the focus of every project. With a strong leader, all endeavours will falter. We need you!

Last time Tyco and I chatted, we discussed buildings concept which I was doing. Due to RL obligation (doing paperwork to move to Canada) and other concerns I had to shift priorities. I still have the roughs (very small, done in the Skype drawing board to interact live with TYCO) but my mind is pretty clear on this.
The Warp Beast metal will be reworked so it will be available in a month or two after I am done with the art assets pending for the GK mod. I also have the DE jetbike eldar that needs to be improved, tweaked, unwrapped and painted. The WB is a given no matter what, the jetbike and such, we'll see, but i need a vehicle for my portfolio but it's down the queue list.
I can work the building concepts in a month or two. Most of the ideas are down and set, so it's more like putting them in order. I would have no problem handing them over to Tyco or you shall you need them along with the Warp Beast.

Hey guys, thx for the support. Due to moving out, I've have (almost) no online time left. I'm working mainly on the road, so I have no direct PC access. This isn't very good, since I can't communicate via msn.
I think I'm finally in the stage, where I must accept that I must pass this on to someone better suited, and with more online time. Not to mention that I have been somewhat irritated over the years, by the fact that some people promise me stuff which will never get done, major setbacks and people leaving.
Blackfang had promised several times to set up the OE coding for the ingame models with Santos Tools, yet to this day nothing further has happened. I can't get into contact with him, and it's kind of hard to say yet in the several years this has occured quite oftenly that he disappeared for some time. Which meant waiting, waiting and more waiting since he had the code. He's a nice guy, yet not too dependable.
Also I lacked the art or coding abilities other people have. Frankly, I both admire and envy Compiler & Shingouki. Both being able to handle code & art and blend it into a fantastic result (from what I've seen), they've come so far since their first posts here on the forums. I hope they succeed, where I can't. Thumbs up! ;-)
So, if anyone is up for it, let me know via pm and I'll pass on everything I have. I'm still willing to do some lesser work, UI or some basic AE coding, yet the coordination and planning of the mod has become beyond my reach.
I also want to thank some people that helped during the past years: Thud (providing me with fresh blood and AI), Oly (who did most unit models), Alf (support & webhosting), CLR (basic code setup & animations), Blackfang (assistance & coding), Sasquatch (early code build), Shingouki (advice & assistance), Epoxy (early textures), Catwell (textures), Dr. Grim (advice & textures) and many more who have contributed, but whose names I forgot.
I still frequent these boards when I can, so it's not like you'll see me stop posting here.

I'm sorry to hear that my friend.. Sounds like you have had setbacks that have plauged the Tau Mod too in the past. This is one of the most needed mods for DoW and should be finished.

Whilst things look grim my friend you shouldn't give up. Too much work has been put into this to be wasted. It might take you a year to settle back into the community with regular internet access and even longer to get the staff but surely its not worth wastin a year + on something that never gets finished. Some mods are beginning to draw to a close and i'm sure once some are complete there will be more help at hand. Please don't give up buddy.

The community should rally around Dark Eldar as it is one of the MAIN War40k "Pillar Factions" to complete since Relic/THQ will very likely never make their own for any future incarnation of a possible DoW sequal.
We don't have to wait a year for DE if we rally to assist you.
As mentioned, I contacted BlackFang 2 days ago and found he is too busy. I do wish he would have contacted me months ago but 2 days ago I accidentally saw him on MSN and wham.. we got an update. Ughhhh... Modding for free is never easy to progress in.
We'll try to regroup the DE team especially its original members and start moving DE forward. I just wish we had heard of the warning signs earlier so we could have not waited 3-4 months longer. Regardless.. lets re-org the project due to its importance.

I agree with thud. Someone of authority in this forum should make a post declaring the need for the community to unite to complete this mod. If people have enough respect for the hard work put in to this i'm sure there will soon be help on the horizon.

Amen to that. This is a great mod, with great ideas and great artwork. It would be an absolute shame to let it sink into obscurity.

Danimator was also so kind to offer his help too, so he and ALF got to make some arrangements first to see what Danimator can do to help the DE mod further.

I'll offer whatever staff I can. BlackFang has given over as much DE assets as he had but what about the other prominent DE staff members? Grim is working currently with DE stuff. Sasquatch and Epoxy are they around? CLR did a bang up job with the DE interface and gather he is too busy. Regardless, I work closely with Alf so getting DE stuff done will NOT be a prob.
I've already talked to Danimator (since he's working on the Tau Mods Kroot (and soon Vespids)) We're working out a game plan.
Once I get the TODO list from Tyco I'll do this right away:
-a new post in this forum so I can update the first post (like the Tau mod post in this forum)
-post a close to this thread and a link to the new one
-Update the DE website
-Let the public know of the Remaining Open items for the DE mod and start an open application process (i.e. someone from the community Volunteers.. I'll update the list with the volunteer assignment and their progress on the open item)
Any help I can give you alf be it mapping, beta testing or voice acting don't hesitate to ask i'm not great in the 3rd option and i'm best at beta testing but like I said if you need ANY help at all.
Anyone who would like to help with DE please contact me via PM with a list of what your Modding Talents are (strongest first) and I'll contact you once Tyco gets back to me with the list of open items.

Please, do like Shin is now doing with his Eldar stuff. He combined it all together so as to get something out sooner rather than later.
Please keep the Dark Eldar Race Mod manageable with a clearly defined tech tree and specific list of units.
Something small and compact released a month or two from now is better than something huge or something multiple race released five or ten years from now.
They debated and talked Thousand Sons for years and never released anything. Riker has regular incremental releases DoWXP, and he's still going strong and now has the biggest community.
There's something about an imminent release that focusses goals and focusses attention. It is no longer theory and discussion, but a reality that needs to be refined and supported and focussed on in even greater detail. A release seems to clear the clutter and bring a focus to these things.
That's why I was really excited when Shin said that he's combining his Eldar mods and focussing on a quicker release, rather than dragging them out for a couple more years to make two separate mods and more work and more delay and more unfinished features on a list.
That's also why I was happy when alf started emphasizing that he's only going to release two of the five or six Tau factions that he has on the table. Again, going for a release sooner than going for total completion. Focussing on a near release seems to focus attention. And, that's what we need now, as the DoW game is getting older and people are indeed fading away and going on to other stuff. Finish what you got and release. And, if you have a Thousand Sons type project that's going to take ten years to complete, try to find ways to scale it down to a manageable size and a single race mod that can hopefully be released in the next six months.
Anyway, please focus on getting something ready for release, sooner rather than years later. I see signs of that idea here as well, and that's a good thing. Sooner, rather than years later. I don't think this game has decades of life left in it any more, and if some of these mods aren't done before DoW2 comes out, they might not ever get done and then all that effort and time has been wasted unless you can somehow magically port it all directly to DoW2, which you can't rely upon being the case.
My focus will be to Involve the community in helping finish DE ASAP
The progress will depend on the help and their availibility.
But I hope the Plans of the DE aren't over extravagant.. or they might require "slight" adjustments (with input from the community of course)

Since alot of the DE assets are in the advanced stages I don't see this as being a problem. We can get what is needed for this project moving forward quickly.
