I really like the look of the winter maps and I got a bit tired of wait for the editor. So I decided to jerry rig me a 1.4 ME :num:

The first map I made was really to test the WA textures, Objects and the snow falling. So it is a bit small, but plays (I think anyway) really well.

Install - Just unpack the content of the rar into your THQ\Dawn of War\WXP\Data\ folder

More to follow - the Titan is screaming out to be in another map whahahaha!

I would be interested more in the objects and textures/decals for Winter Assault!!!!!
Don't let the other mappers back in the rain :p

Neat dude, real neat. I assume you need a dual install. 1.3 to run the ME and WA to run the maps. Perhaps you should let us in on the deal. ;)

Waiting for these new tools is frustrating as it is.

It’s actually really easy and you are right I have a 1.3 install, I use for space hulk. I created a WXP mod and stacked all the uncompressed information from all the SGA's into it. Because the ME can’t read the new RGD files I had to remove the race data (which means relic if we had the lua's we could do everything). Anyway, so the IG units and buildings are the only thing you can’t use in the ME, but you would only really need them for SP play maps.

I recommend saving your map before placing objects their are 4 objects that crash the ME, I’m not shore why?

Here is an interesting point - I thought the snow and weather would have been an option in the ME it's self! But their is an FX_Snow folder in objects and all you do is pick one and place it on the map. It doesn't show up in the editor - but will show up in game. Their is rain as well for all those mapper who enjoy a good mud rumble.

Now that you now, I expect to see some winter maps coming out! Maybe a new winter map pack is called for!

edit - Oh i forgot to add their is a scar file that you name the same name as your map and it has these sound effects options

Just replace the t_ambient ={""} with one of the options below it.

I wish I could make maps (I have a fixed 1.4 version of the game)

There are sooooooo many things I would like to add into a map and also from my past history with map making for other games - everyone really liked what I made :)

But those maps up there are really good, I'll be downloading and playing them later - proberbly tomorrow actually.

I believe the north slag deposit dissapears when I get a unit to look at it. I'll have to check again.

The preview shows 8 player location on the 6 player map. Also players 1/2 ; 3/4 ; 5/6 are the teams.

Thx for the feed back Duken :D I guess your talking about the dots under the numbers on the map icon image. Because the maps are white, the numbers didn't stand out. I tried black numbers but it was still a bit blury.

Burns can you give a detailed description what i have to do to get rain or snow into the map ... i don't get your description above .. btw. seems like you can use WA objects, didn't you say they crash ME?

A few of the objects crash the ME, most of them work fine! Their are a few active objects, like the guns on the Titan. These are dependent on the new RGD's that the 1.3 ME isn't setup for. That’s why I said, save before adding objects. You learn quickly which ones don't work, there is only a couple to remember.

Now, to setup your 1.3 ME for WA!
Unpack these files from - THQ\Dawn of War\WXP\

1) WXPData.sga
2) WXPData-SharedTextures-Full.sga
3) WXPData-Whm-High.sga

And put the unpacked data into you 1.3 DoW - THQ\Dawn of War\W40k\Data\

Then open the THQ\Dawn of War\data\attrib\ folder
Then delete every folder except the "ebps" folder
Then open the ebps folder and delete everything except the "environment" folder

Bang your ready :) If you have any problems, let me know.

I love city maps in the snow but the only problem about Cold Company is that you start right next to the enemy and if you have the SM your engineer can get killed because he can't defend himself.

Plus its not fun if you want to play a long 6 player Free For All because 2 of the armies won't get to build their forces up since the placing of the HQ to close to the enemy HQ will ensure an early demise.

Also the race that destroys the other closly placed HQ will also be at a disadvantage at winning the war because he would have spent time destroying this HQ instead of building up his forces.

I've done 4 AI only games and watched the ones who had a HQ next to them,always lose in the end.

Overall its still a good map :heyhey:

Cold Company is really to small for 6v6. With the 1.4 patch allowing you to place or not place players in their fix start positions - is why i made it 2v2v2. So that you can play 1v1v1 or 1v1v2 and so on.

Whilst all these maps can be played in normal DoW, i am really making them for my First Wave mod. Which you start with a builder and scouts and have to build you base from scratch.

Anyway, thats why those things are the why they are! Thx for the feedback

I have an idea for a map, that keeps haunting me (as i can't use the ME) : What about a siege/palace/castle like map. Four players in the middle against 4 players on the outside. Each player should have plenty of space, so that IG and SM don't have a disadvantage. Only two pathes (maybe bridges) would connect the inside and the outside, something like drawbridges around a castle. Water would block the other terrain. All set in a wintery theme.

Just think of a castle with two bridges sourrounded by a trench filled with water. In winter. With maybe a medieval feeling to it...
And make it a 1024x1024 map with loads of details.
And snow. And wind howling. And the new winter textures.

damn i really miss the ME, but i fear to do that all the dual installation-stuff as it will maybe mess up my registry...

Sounds cool. Maybe there could be the Psychic Shield from the campaign, if it doesn't screw performance or anything. And instead of snow, Helm's Deep-style rain would be cool, too.

I am interested in some of these ideas. Although, I wouldn't make a map were you start in the centre - the reason for this will be reviled in due time! ;)

But maybe a huge wall with a Psychic Shield along one side of the map, and the gate is protected by a siege with deep concrete walls and ice on the bottom...hmmm Around the siege is a ruined city that tapers out to rolling snow. When I finish the map I’m on I will start work on that one.

what about this burns, a desert with dunes and cliffs with small trenchs and heavy cover with barbed wire (for squads) check out this map for insparation http://dawnofwar.filefront.com/file/Sandswept_Plains;44174 the basic layout would be huge plains with dunes and trenchs ive had some wild fights on that map, and it would be nice to see your version.

BTW your cold company map is broken, specificly the start placements, and the fact the map is a DoW campaign map with changes.

or how about a 3 player (player in town, 2 enemys outside the city, with the outside being anything from a snowy plain to a snowed out outskirts type deal, or maybe even a snow covered forest with small pathways big enough fpr a pred to get through but have trees so that its hard to see the ground, like on this map, http://dawnofwar.filefront.com/file/Gehenkras_Subway;46952.) town that being preped for an invasion, IE hallow buildings that allow heavy cover with barbed wire and trenchs behind the barbed wire lines that form a small maze prevent a straight path to your base with armor (troops would be able to pass the wire but the wire would be neg cover), with the streets being large enough to acomindate even the squiggy with numerous SPs, relics, and even a few slags, to give the impression of a town thats has been prepared for full scale war. also maybe add small path or 2 thats thats next to player1 spawn that connects to a few hills where arty can be placed to bomb the city.

Im full of ideas yet I cant operate any method of map making, i tried the map maker for red alert but I could only make crap maps.

EDIT: if you want, i MAY be able to do a rough sketch of my idea and get it uploaded somewhere.

I'm more concered about winter maps, as it appears i'm the only one with a WA compatable ME. But your ideas can be translated into a snow theme. The city map i am currently working on will take me a little while! But maybe after that, lets see how we go :)

newghost - the new map is coming along, its not really pic worthy. Its always hard to guess how long a map is going to take, but i would say i will finish it by this sunday. Stay tuned :)

Exigo probably doesn't have his graphics set at high, so he might not be used to seeing the detail in the game (correct me if I'm wrong, Exigo).

I really don't know what you mean about a theme sarge but what i would like to see is another cold company type map execpt maybe 3 times bigger.

I always loved highly detailed maps and i want to get my hands on the new map editor so i can finish these maps that i re-edited except much bigger:

Mission 7 : Sacrifice. Its the mission were the key is stolen by the sorcerer :) I really like this map and I had just gotten the WA textures in. So I needed something to practice winter texturing on. I think it came out great so I thought I would share it around.

adamstrange - Your recreations look fantastic! You should save the layout as an entity and start your own city project. That taunted planet looks very cool - Nice One!

What I mean by theme is a story/objective, Each of my maps will be part of a campaign that flows onto the other. A short story in really time, of course I wanted the maps able to be played singularly as well :)

The real problem with large maps e.g. 1024x1024 - is you can't have allot of detail or the frame rate falls though the floor. Not because of a lack of PC power, but because the engine seams to cave under the pressure. Even my 512x512 maps with a fall Waaugh on the rampage can cause a frame drop. Someone did make a 1024x1024 city map with a good amount of detail? It had a fortified area in each corner. And every time me a Br Cerabus played on it, it started ok than the speed went to hell and because of the map seize it would take us 1 & 1/2 hours for 1 game :insane: too long for me, I’m afraid. Sorry about the rant!!

Hey Sarge, if you still have that 1024x1024 map can you send it to me please?

If i do a seperate install of DOW in my older PC and update it to 1.3,how can i have acces to WA since the moment that i install that it will automaticlly update to 1.4.

I also have a 1.2 version save on my second drive that i can transfer over to my second older PC.

If you can show me how to access the WA environment i will start creating new maps ASAP :thumb:

Ooph, i manged to make me a WA ME, too, following your descriptions. That was hard, whew, took me over an hour :yech:

But it finally works :buddies:

There are interesting models and textures and the fx are nice, too.

I have a map idea. While i was playing the campaign in WAi noticed all of those planks on the floor and those tin wall things. It gave me the idea of a trench war, where everything was trenches, no cities, just large trences for bases (not too deep) and a few larger trenches for large vehicles, with many smaller trenches for soldiers. All with a winter theme of course :thumb:

awesome maps BrSgt_Burns, i have played them for hours and hours over the last few days, i really like how they are made like scenarios with orks in x base and sm in the others and stuff, nice touch. distress call is my fave so far, i cant stop playing it :twisted: i have modified it slightly though (for my own use) as the impass areas were abit strange imo, even in some parts you could not fit a baneblade through so i had to change the terrain slightly around the cliff roads to make it slightly wider, i added the odd area of cover and negative cover around too aswell as abit more detail, cant wait for your next creations :thumb:

what about 4 teams 1 each corner. the edges impassible and 1 big highway type thing down the middle with lots of stratigic points and craters to use as cover???
just a simple idea nothing fancy lol :|

Hay Hay, I'm back!!! Just in time for Xmas off wahoo!!! Good to be missed guy's and thanks for the kudo's.

Map number five is finished, but i started coding it! Maybe this weekend i will take the code and buildings out and post a skirmish version, hell i might even throw a beta coded version for testing - see how i go :).

Burns, now that the mod tools are out do your maps still need to be specially installed? I skimmed the first page of the thread and it seemed to indicate that you began this before mod tools were out and you needed to jump through some hoops to get them running properly.

As for a "campaign style" set of maps- great idea! If you need any help writing any flavor text aorund them let me know.

I used some custom textures for my maps! So these had to be added, thats why i created the installer. They would have to be added either way or you get the dredded purple ?.

Thanks for the help offer, I'm going to spend a bit more time on Space Hulk this month. I will come back to this in Jan.

Is it obvious from the map names what order you think they should be played in, and with what forces? (Sorry- can't load it now- at work). :D
