View Full Version : [MINI-MOD] Devastator Squad

I plan on creating a devastator squad mini-mod. It'll just incorporate the devastator squad into the Space Marine race faction.

note: I have never played the TT game so im not too familiar with specifics of the weapons not used in DoW.

This would be my first attempt at creating a mod. With all the helpful tutorials hopefully i'll be able to complete(through trial and error) this small mod. I want to create a very customizable squad, allowing the player to chose which heavy weapons each member of the squad uses. The squad would include: a sgt. unit, and either 4 or 5 marines to equip with heavy weapons.(for example: you could have a squad with all Plasma Cannons.) The following weapons i have in mind are:

Heavy Bolter: I'd use the regular Heavy Bolter model already in the game and up the stats so it puts the terminator assault cannon to shame.

Rocket Launcher: I want it to be less accurate but more devasting(excuse the pun) when it lands a hit.

Lascannon: Powerful against vehicles and buildings, pretty long recharge rate because of the damage it does to buildings and vehicles

Plasma Cannon: i have no idea what it does in TT. but my idea for making it unique to space marines is using the Fire Prism Tank attack. Stuns vehicles, disrupts squads by throwing them in every which direction, loads of damage.

My only abilities are texturing, but i am familiar with the mod tools(i'm just waiting for the newest version to be released.) My questions to you are:

1.) would a begginer be able to complete a mod like this?

2.) does anybody know of a Marine with plasma cannon and another with the Lascannon that are available or if the creators of another mod would be willing to someone use them?

3.) could i use the animations of the Rocket Launcher marine for a newley created Lascannon marine? and the same for heavy bolter to plasma cannon? They seem to be held in a similar fashion.

I have many more ideas but i didnt want to overwhelm myself so im just sticking to this one and if i can complete it I'll try other things.

although this mod sounds like a good idea, many other mods have added these things one way or another i hope it turns out well though

When I see people make Devorstator squads I don't usally think they have turned out too well because they keep the Tactical squads the same.


Tacticle squads should only have 2 weapon upgrades.
Devorstaors should have 4.

To make them more different from each other I suggest this.

Make tactical squads choice of weapons different so they can only choose from the following:

Flamer (just like how they are now)
Plasma guns when an armoury is built (just like how they are now at being anti-heavy-infantry)
Heaey bolters when an armoury is built (just like how they are now)
Meltaguns when you get the first keep upgrade, they are anti-tank and anti-building but have very short range, nearly as short as the flamers.
Devorstators should have choice from the following weapons.

Plasma cannons - Heavy bolter range and anti-heavy-infantry. Also has a blast radius.
Missile launchers, very good range, anti-tank and anti-building. (kind like the current SP missile launchers)
Lascannons, good range and anti-tank, Very very powerfull against tanks.
Multmeltas, boltgun range but very very very good at anti-tank and anti-building.
Both the tactical and Devorstators should be 8 man squads and can have a Sargent.

That's what I think but to do that you'll need to make some new 3D models

Plasma cannon
lascannon (but you could proberbly pinch that from the Preditor tank - just requires a little more work)

with this tutorial i added a devastator squad to dow and it works i n winter assault,but no heavy weapons!

i could model something ,but the texturing is another task i seem not to be up to

well, the devastator squads in TT have up to 4 of the following options
These are:-
Lascannon
Plasma Cannon
Missile launcher
Heavy Bolter
Multi-Melta

The point is: for an RTS gameplay standpoint you want to keep the defacto TACTICAL and new Devasator squads unique and exclusively-useful. Both of these should be different so noone just techs to Devastators and owns everything. Both should have pluses and minuses.

Tactics could move faster, fast weapon upgrades, have short-mid range attack, and limited anti-vehicle (like they do now with just missiles). Armour and Morale stays the same.

Devastators could move 2x slower than Tactics, slow weapon upgrades, long-range attack, excellent anti-vehicle/building weapons, more armour to keep them alive but break morale faster.

But isn't that what we already have - when you get second tier, you can only have 2 heavy weapons. Then you research to upgrade you tactical to Devastator squads, each unit with a heavy weapon is slower, has a set up time and has more range/damage (due to the heavy weapon stats)?

Not to be a party poopa :( But making a unit slow and fast will only make the fast units redundant. Because speed is only good for recon or and retreat - which will be traded of for slow and powerful every time. A wall of slow certain destruction will march across the field leaving nothing living in its path. Success, will out way speed I’m afraid!

You would be best of having 1 elite unit capable of carry more Heavy Master Craft Weapons. Like the daemon, it has a summons time (Order Time) and the enemy when they saw it could focus the energy on destroying it, knowing their will be a reprieve on its destruction. This would add more tactic’s, for you and the enemy! Anyway that’s my 2 cents :)

i seemed to notice in the game the models upgraded with heavy weapons seemed to move a bit slower and react slower too
,then i ran a test "race" between a tactical and a devastator squad
; the devastator were slow compared to the tacticals in running,bringing the heavy weapon to bear on the enemy also reduces time :hide:
i would suggest that if you were to reduce the speed of the devastators you should lower it to 12 not 8!

btw : i had a TT battle with the new rules against nids; i can tell you my oponents army's size had me worried slightly as it almost 3 or 4 times the size of my "exterminator force"
god..., i just love devastators !!! :P

Medes has a Devastator model and a revised Tactical model (with Meltagun), but they're very WIP at the moment.

The lascannon and plasma cannon are already modelled.

Oh and no. You can't use rocket marine anims for a lascannon marine.

Finally is there a way to make units spawn with different weapons. I hate the fact that dev squads always start with HB's

where as most people are crazy and overthink stuff, he has common sense?

also just adding devs should make it easy to balance, but isnt it a bit wierd just adding 1 new thing? also speaking of that, relic does kinda do the same with each race, but have also added in a few more races to go. i think they should add a couple more units instead of 1 for each race.

Ok I will wait for the devastators than if nobody has any other....
But I got a Melta Marine already, but i dont like it because it uses post 1.41 colours only....and I use Hangar-8 's Marine textures, with golden eagles and green eyes, better if you are a Blood Ravens fan.
And any terminator with Lightning Claws or techmarine, working Vindicator or Razorback?

You've gotta admit though thud. The textures on the plasma cannon and lascannon were/are lame.

That was so last many years ago. :D I talking about all the mods these days that long since updated their Devastator/Havoc squads with the latest eye-candy. Back then.. well sure.. but nowadays.. whole new ball game!
