..Damnit. He was the only guy in the entire forum who actually made me laugh.
Any idea how he died? The article just says "died unexpectedly". Were there health problems? Was there an accident?
This place just isn't going to be quite as amusing without him.
Bye Murph. :(

Murph? One of the DOW mods?
I don't know what to say aside from "Rest in Peace". I really don't know much about him other than he's a fun guy to talk to.
Also, how on earth did he die?
Anyways, god bless you Murph.

I knew murph from way back in HW1 days (around 1998 ) and have enjoyed many a game with him.
I remember our days in NWN when we roamed around MERP together.
Not to mention the good times we had on various forums

I'm not sure, but I think that captions in HW2 could be partly due to Murph's criticism of HW1's occasionally lacking captions. I can't confirm it and I'm not really up to it right now.
I'm going to miss Murph.
Like many others I've only really known him through IRC. With the others we've talked and joked around for the past 4+ years. He shared his weight and work concerns with us, and I'd like to think we helped him develop his self esteem by treating him normally. No one is deaf in IRC.
There's an empty hole in the nicklist right now, right by the L, M and Ns.
You're a great guy Murph. I'm glad to have met you.

Aw geez. I really liked the guy.
Being the inconsiderate prick that I am, I'm not going to haul out the checkbook and make a contribution to the Muscular Dystrophy association as the news article requests for those that wish to leave some sort of memoriam.
I'm going to write up a donation for Child's Play. The way I figure it, Murph probably saw the inside of a hospital more than once or twice in his younger years because of his deafness. He'd probably have appreciated having a video game or two to play, and maybe the same could be said for other kids.
I think Murffles would think something like that was cool, maybe.

It's always a shock to hear about board members dying, especially such prominent ones. I'll miss him.
Sadly he is dead. Even more sadly I didn't know him much. I can say that he is one of the few people I ever argued with, it didn't even occur to me to try with him. He was just ... that great guy over there. You know?
Well, I missed my chance to get to know him, but I won't miss my chance to say goodbye. I hope you enjoyed your life as much as we enjoyed having you around. In honour of Murph, I will do something I haven't done in a long long time.

Murph...hard to believe he's gone. He was like halfway between a regular and a lurker, always showing up at unexpected moments and blowing the forums out of the water for a little while before disappearing to god-knows-where for like a month before resurfacing again. Like that whole 'Matrix Retarded' deal which accumulated into this...

It's not fair. How can someone with so much life in him die so young?
Easily the best sense of humour in the community. An awesome person and a great friend. My thoughts go out to his family.

Well.. i'm pretty much at loss of words. As always when friends die... words really don't convey things for me.
I couldn't help but feel John Cleese said it best:
"Good riddance to him, the freeloading bastard, i hope he fries! And the reason i feel i should say this is he would never forgive me if i didn't, if i threw away this glorious oppurtunity to shock you all on his behalf. Anything for him but mindless good taste!"
That's from the eulogy for Graham Chapman but i think it can be applied Murph's case as well. I always enjoyed talking to him on IRC because you knew the conversation would break down into name calling of the most imaginative kind just like it should among friends. :)

a couple of my favorite memories of murph besides the regular, everyday joking around friendly banter
since murph was deaf, when he was using phone, they have interpeters that have to type everythign i say, and say everything that murph typed or said to me. man, we had some serious fun with that. like. i pee'd my pants irl almost. i didn't know there was such a job as an interpeters. and they like, HAVE to say everything you say or type, cus it's their job. that was so funny.
then this thread: http://www.eve-evol.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2510
you can't see it now cus the links are dead, and i may try to find the pics later from my hd at home, but there was a pic of me on murphs lap. photoshopped pretty damn well. and i had a face, and murph had a face. and it looked pretty funny ;[
then i made a pic of naked skydivers with some people's faces, obviously including murphs. and it was funny too.
it was always like that with murph. i can honestly say he was one of the few people that have only ever made me laugh and have a better time.

Maybe Relic should put a character named Murph as a cameo in a game like The Outfit. A Soldier who had a shell go off close to him which damaged his hearing. Says a few lines of dialogue in a cutscene (tells player about enemy fortifications ahead) and then leaves with a "See ya dolts!"

This is Murph, taken in July 2005. We on IRC requested, since he had a webcam, for random objects to be placed on his head. A banana, a cup and a meat pie followed, but alas I have no pictures of those.

I knew Murph since the early days of the original Homeworld and had many great times with him on WON and on IRC. Recently, he was putting a lot of time as DM into a NWN module that I have been modding on. It's going to be impossible to replace him, he was a standup guy all around and will be sorely missed.

Murph, I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't met you. At first I hated you, I didn't understand while you always banned me, insulted and abused me. I eventually realized you were telling me, in your own special way, that I should relax, stop taking things so seriously and grow up.
Thank you Murph, else, I might still be a depressed emo furry. Godspeed.

Oh man, this comes so unexpected.... It seemed to me he was doing quite well for himself lately. I am devastated by this.
I've known him for years, and have talked and played a lot with him... Especially NWN and HW2, where we were (sort of) an unbeatable duo in 2vs2's.
I can't really express what this feels like, he was among the best friends I had in this community. His sense of humor was incredible.
Goodbye mate, I'll miss you a lot.

I didn't know him personally, but I have seen him around here far too much not to known of him. It really is tragic how you're here one minute, and gone the next. No one is above this principle; it must happen to all of us, even if we aren't ready.
I can only hope his last moments were peaceful.

Just did a search of his posts, and I found his last one:
One of the things you gotta realize is that these DPS models and such do not substitute for understanding how things really work in-game.
In other words, what appears to be so on paper isn't how it's actually done.
I, for one, wish Relic never released the information on these games as far as armor, penetration, DPS, etc because it just fuels the fire for the people crying about nerfing or buffing units.
Reading that stuff is just so... weird. I'm getting on Homeworld right now, hope to see you guys there.

I really hope they put in a Murph easter-egg into the next Relic game, that would be very appropriate and he would have loved it.

I second the suggestion for this thread to be vaulted; it is not only appropriate for a respected and cherished member of the boards to be remembered through it, but also indicative of the solidarity of the community.

I saw him around, but really never talked with him. He will be missed. :salute:
Steve, was probably one of my closest friends online. Excellent HW player, excellent friend, excellent person.
One of my best memories was him and I on AIM talking, it went something like this:
His S/N was Murphwastaken, cause... Murph was already in use on AIM.
mst3k123> sup dude?
murphwastaken> nothing messing with my speakers
mst3k123> ...
mst3k123> dude, you are deaf... wtf?!
murphwastaken> :/
He was a huge DD fan. Use to play Pencil and Paper all the time. He got me playing Neverwinter Nights with him for a while on a PW server called 5realms with the Drunken warriors, had a great time killing everyone with him. AND HE TAUGHT ME ALL THE EXP CHEATS IN 5R!!! When 5R opened up to guild halls, him and I decided to make a theif's guild. It was huge, but the GMs let us put it in. Awesome guild hall I thought. Had alot of fun messing around with everyone on there.
After I left Neverwinter to play counter-strike and final fantasy 11, Murph and I still chatted on AIM, and bragged about how great our games were and the other was silly for still playing it.
Never got a chance to play Dawn of War with him, but he prolly would have beaten me worse than I beat him in HW...
On a more personal note: I'm really going to miss murph, we'd fallen off talking in the last few months cause we both were busy with life. I don't even know if he was able to finally get that girlfriend he always wanted but I don't think he had a bad life... I know it wasn't an easy life, but not a bad one.
RIP Murphalicious.

I second 5th's idea and ask that jumper or someone else bring attention to the devolpers...though I know monk and others might already know.

Immortalize Murph in Company of Heros. Create a demolitions unit and use one of Murph's pictures as the facial model. That way he can continue to blow stuff up even from where ever he might be.

We'd probably have to consult his family though; they may not approve of his likeness being used in that way.

Murph, you are missed and you will always been in my thoughts.
I didn't know him all that well, but I have known him for a long time and always polite, funny, and inquisitive. Rest in peace Murph.
