View Full Version : Will German Soldiers Spechen sie Deutch?

We've heard American soldiers speak in the videos, but I don't recall hearing distinct speech from a German soldier. I know in a WWII flight simulator from long ago they did speak German only, no subtitles, and that was pretty cool.

well I don't know if this answers the question for sure, but in the latest video I heard atleast 2 clear german phrases. I caught a "feueren alles was Sie haben" or "fire everything you got." I also heard a "sie haben durchgebrochen" or "they've broken through."
I will say I certainly hope the germans speak deutsch, although bad german accents do lend a certain comic value to games.

I really hope they didnt say "sie haben durchgebrochen!" because thats real sucky german.

just looked at it again, they say, "sie brechen durch!" Also, I meant to use "sind," brain isn't working today, but hey, thanks for making me feel self conscious about my crappy german skills.

Why yes, it WAS Jane's WWII fighters! :)
Okay, well good ear, two phrases gives me hope.

well, besides those 2 phrases which are not grammatically correct, all the other germans orders 'auf meinen Befehl warten' etc... were in good germans. I also liked this strong and 'strenger ' german accent..... This game will be a blast to play. I am getting sick of elves, dwarves, special elite froces or indians and cowboy RPG. Thank you Relic for bringing one of the biggest battle that happened back to live in this genre, expecially looking that good.
I can't wait to explore the posibilities of this 'movie maker', I am sure that the community will bring out stunning WW2 short footage.

As long as they don't respond to orders with "for ze fuhrer" or anything like that I'll be happy.

is it just me or do all german accent/voice sound the same in every same movie and game? Did they hire the same guy or something?
(Watch Saving private ryan near the end, listen to them then go play call of duty 2)

Its all german. Its the same way all chinese sounds the same for a person not speaking it natively.

That is just "y'all look alike to me" crap. They all look different and sound different to me. Maybe that is because I live in a cultural melting pot.

I never said anything about looks. If you can tell 2 chinese apart purely by hearing their voices fine.

I think it would be a cool gameplay decision by Relic that if you want to be l337 with a foreign army, whose language you don't understand, then you gotta learn a few phrases. Might put at a disadvantage those who know neither English or German, but it would make for a more immersive experience.

;) have fun with translating that!
@GNE: If they would do, they couldn't sell the game in Austria/Germany, so I think they won't ruin their sales count and something tells me that German soldiers didn't response to every order on the field with "for ze fuhrer" at least if they were not Waffen SS or some other fanatic unit.
If they would response like that every US unit would have to respond with "For the free world" "For freedom" "For coke and mickey mouse" all the time.
I'm only concerned about French cameos "Mondieux!"

I-L2 sturmovik was great without english audio... Granted, I have no idea what my wingmen are on about without looking at the subtitles, but at least now I can give nautical directions in German! "Neu kurs: null, null, seiben!"
...Or maybe that was SH3...
DatonKallandor
16th Mar 06, 5:38 AM
SH3 was that. "Neuer Kurs: Sieben, Acht, Zwei"

:(
"Yes, those are you! Tear yourselves gefaelligst together, and you try it again! Otherwise that does not become anything with the CoH plays! It cannot be that one does not understand the own units."

Personally I think that it would be appropriate to include the original languages even in the foreign versions, in addition to the localized language. From talking with people like Riess and Worf the translation jobs for games aren't always very good, and some people actually prefer the English language game to the one in the local language. This migh be worth thinking about for people who know German but don't live in Germany, or people who know English but don't live in N. America/UK/Australia/etc.
At the very least there should be some key phrases in the original language for authenticity.
"Yes, you are! Now pull yourself together and try again! Otherwise playing CoH won't work, after all you have to understand your own units."

Meatpacker, you failed :p
From talking with people like Riess and Worf the translation jobs for games aren't always very good,
That's an understatement. Most localizations are horrible. Case in point, Homeworld 2: the corvette gunships somehow became the German equivalent of "choppers". Makaan sounded like your friendly next door neighbor ("excuse me, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience in advance but I will now take the core and run. Would that be ok with you?" ), and the "oh no, we are lost, we are..." you hear before your ship blows up was about the most unemotional and bored thing I have ever heard.
In C&C: Tiberian Sun (?) some genius had the idea of calling all troops cyborgs, which was very confusing since Nod could actually build cyborgs in addition to the regular troops. They also sounded like a robot from a bad 50s sci-fi film.
The list goes on... long story short, I'll take the English version over the localized one any day.

Well, since you speak English, it's not a problem. I think Makaan sounding like that would probably floor me with laughter.
People need to appreciate randomness more ;)

I think the same people made the german version of Nexus. When your gunboats die it actually reports with "Helicopter squadron lost".

I remember the German Version of "Hidden and Dangerous". In one mission you had to take out fuel tanks with explosives but in the German version the briefing said, that you have to take out several "Panzers" (the huge armored vehicles with lot's of firepower) which is one translation of the word tank.
That mission caused me some headache.
I'm so thankful for every game that is distributed with the english language files. Those that aren't I stopped buying a long time ago.
Sadly my local games shop is no more so I now have to order the games from the UK. Which isn't all that bad since the shipping is free and the games are 10 bucks cheaper than here in the shop ;)
Anyway, german voice acting would be great. It's possible and has been done by other games already (like civ 4 where the units respond in their proper language or RtCW). You could still keep subtitles for the missions. This would add greatly to the atmosphere.

It should be optional. So you can have an english speaker doing a German accent or fully German.

I remember Codename Panzers had russian, english and german speaking units. It really added to the feel of the game. Commands I couldn't understand sounded cooler than the rest, and figuring out using my n00b german skillz what the hell is "ausgezeichnete soldaten" was fun. :D

i think the german units should definately speak in their native tounges.
When i was paying Silent Hunter 3, it was much better to hear the germans actually speak german rather than have some dude put on a german accent and speak english.
All adds to the authenticity.

they MUST speak german.. this english with a fake german accent ruins games.. really makes it cheesy..
think back to return to castle wolfenstine... really took a cool game and made it cartoonish

(I was talking about RTCW, in responce to Brinkman's post)
RTCW didn't contain German language, just some words that were among spoken English with a bad German accent.
IIRC COH had some German in it, especially in the mission where you had to steal the documents off a German warship.
They had some nice German voice actors and one guy who sounded like he was American reading Gewrman text off a page.
Funny thing with this ship mission was that the officer who was with you claimed to speak German quite good so no German soldier would know a difference and in the end he talked so bad that he would be shot on sight as a spy :D

also curiouse if russians will speak russian(if there even in the game, not shure of them saying but i expect a WW2 game to have them).
I played COD2 and i hated how all the sayings were in english except for when ya listend to a radio, then it was russian.
Also since Germany wasnt the only axis in Europe curiouse if we get italian soldiers speaking italian.

Maybe they'll eventually add in Russian options and Japanese options, with expansions. If so, I hope they spead Russian and Japanese too... and no subtitles!

Subtitles should be an option and would only appear during cutscenes. As well as objectives, they would be in english, so we would know what the hell is going on. Of course, in case of subtitles, we should be able to choose wether we want to see them in english or in the language there are actually spoken in. ;)
All battle chatter, warcries, command replies and unit selection voices should be in the language of the unit.

Hoping for, optional language and subtitles really. German audio with subtitles for single player, english for multiplayer when I can't afford the time to read messages.
Rafta:
RtCW did have some german voice acting, mainly the soldiers who asked you for your papers. They spoke proper German and the meaning was displayed as English subtitles. I thought it was great.
To get this one in English over here was a real pain in the ass since even the distribution is illegal. Fortunately owning it isn't ;) Now with play.com it's easy though.

hm, those lines must have slipped my notice.
Which level was it, where you had to kill the Officers of the Paranormal Division without triggering alarms in the small village??
We're venturing a little off-topic here, so after this post please keep in check.
To be precise it was the level where you blew up that submarine, there you get a uniform and papers to get in. You can then acquire a second set of papers for the high security zone. The guards ask for your papers and if you don't have the proper ones they also tell you that in german and attack you.
