1
the thing to colour schemes is what your army is. say if someone put a camo scheme on necrons, it wouldn't look to good. so your colour scheme should suit your army
2
there are 3 main schemes i use, they are: camo, ceramic and metallic, you should use these schemes accordinly e.g cadian-> camo, necron-> metallic. But some armies can cross over to different schemes e.g necrons are known for metallics but can be also painted with ceramic scheme.
Camo
Camo schemes are usually used Cadian armies. The thing with camo schemes are that the scheme is used to fit in to the terrain e.g jungle, use of greens and browns. When painting camo schemes, think about where your army is from, for instance catachans are from the deathworld catachan and that world is known for its jungle so you should use green colours. but dont just paint different shades of green mthink about what other colours you find in the jungle e.g brown and black. Usually with camo i come to think" hmmm, camo, Green colours" but think about all the other locations e.g desert, ice, mountains.
these terrain can be also used to help to paint camo. If youre not to good at painting camo, just use the earths armies as an examples.
Ceramics
Ceramics are used mainly for armour plated armies e.g tau, space marines. When I paint ceramic schemes i usually use 3 shades of the same colour e.g dark angels green, catachan green and finally snot green. the first colour is the darkest colour( in my example DA green) the second is the armour plating ( catachan green) and the third is highlights( snot green)
if ceramics are used properly they can be really effective. when choosing your colours for ceramics you can use any colours besides metallic.
Metallics
Metallics are usually used for necron armies. No army would completely use metallics. metallics are usually used with other colours as well. there arent many metallic colours so i dont have much information.
Chart(not Done!)
this chart is just simply showing what armies would look good in what area.
CERAMIC
all space marine
tau
necrons
eldar
CAMO
cadian
orks(maybe, ive seen an excellent camo ork)
tau (still thinking about it)
METALLIC
necron
eldar
Conclusion
this is just a guide to help you shoose a colour scheme, dont just abide by this guide whenever you are painting an army. Be creative and make up your own schemes and suprise me! and i might add your scheme to this list.
so what do you think? pls pm me if you want to contribute/help
and pics will be coming soon
