View Full Version : A mecha BW?

After several thoughts I'm deciding to make a mecha RP in this forum, but first I'll like to ask all of you:
1. Are you interested in it?
2. What type of mechas you want to use in it? (Better with pics if possible)
3. You want a gladiator "just for fun" one, or one with a proper storyline?

Discuss!;)

No matter what, NO GUNDOM(or whatever it's called)!

BrianGeneral
8th May 06, 3:06 AM
That's Gundam.
Seriously, I won't putting those nasty Gundams into battle, but I'm thinking to use Mobile Suits (those Mass-producing models).

Maybe... It would perhaps be better with a storyline hopefully a good story. And IMO best would be small agile melee mechs, perhaps small firearms.

For example?
(I'm thinking of Arm Slaves.)

:D You called?

1)Something like (and please don't kill me for this) Zoids, as in completely custom Mecha, quite big.

2)Or Phantom Crash - amazing game, it's a mecha deathmatch with smaller mecha about the size of a tank upto twice that, but not quite as big as an Arm Slave.

3)Or even small mecha, basically robots.

4)Could be cool, just to run a BW are fought out on your average war-torn planet, with Arm Slaves being the best suited machine, they are single or double pilot, can enter irradiated zones, climb steep surfaces, are fast, mount all sorts of weapons etc.. So we could go for small squads of men, or just one man in a squad of players, prenetrating an enemy territory in special suits.

We find enemy projects along the way, causing us to showdown against a wide variety of ridiculous monster mecah etc. We would have to maintain, upgrade and obtain mecha.

Zone of the Enders mechs. I'm sorry. They just ooze style.

I mean... it's just kewl. I've still got a plan for a ZOE BW in the back of my head anyway, might as well put this now.

Somehow I get the feeling that if we ever actually do create mechs they won't look like THAT!

Really my vision of mechs is something more functional and ugly with a mass produced sort of look.

1: Maybe. Depends on how it gets developed...
2: Holy ones, or ones outside of the society's ability to build more.

Mechas have absolutely no advantage on a battlefield. They're fragile, slow, have huge target profiles, and require metals so strong that if you made a tank out of it, it would be all but invulnerable.

However, if you build some kind of humanist religion around them, you can have your ungodly expensive and horribly inefficient mechas without fear of logical interferance--the same way as you can have sword-wielding Jedi Knights and the most wanked-out mecha of all time, the Titans of 40k.

Alternately, maybe the aliens used them to rule over the population of Earth, mimicking all-powerful creatures, after they conquered us a few hundred years ago, and we have stolen a few from them. Maybe the same thing, but they left a few behind after being defeated by another group of aliens, and we have found them just as yet another set of baddies comes against Earth. Or maybe we, like 40k, have lost the technology to build these mighty war-machines (which we built then for FSM-only-knows what reason).

As for how they ought to look, humanoid but not cluncky and robotic would be nice. Something like the one Lestaki posted, except without the strategically placed cockpit, perhaps. And please, God, no transformers.

3: Proper storyline, if you please.

Klaus88
8th May 06, 9:23 PM
To me, the only kind of mech that could be useful would be as a dreadnought sized infantry support role inside cities. Really. That's about it for how a mech could help because tanks do the job better in every way and don't present the FEAKING MOTHER OF ALL TARGETS!

EDIT: I echo Feil PLEASE NO dumb transformers! And can we avoid stupid energy based weapons here?! I'd rather stick to good old fashioned bulliets and missles alright?

ANOTHER EDIT!: My idea for this board war would be to have two sides, one alien and one human. The aliens rely on more socfitacted mechs and energy weapons and all that jazz. Humans rely on cruder mass produced mechs with old fashioned bullet based weapons.

Ghost in the Shell-styled mechs FTW. Not unnaturally large, fairly well defended, and are just as functional as tanks while being more maneuverable - the entire point of mecha in the first place. ^^

look at your avatar BG, and you see one of few good kinds of walkers in my opinion.

not entirely sure if there mechs. but their coller than any other fictional vehicle of there type.

BrianGeneral
9th May 06, 6:23 AM
Storyline didn't confirmed yet, but already thought of something.

The Mechs in action. I'll say I've thought of a few types of Mechas that can be used:
1) Mobile Suits. (From GM and Zaku to Strike Daggers and GuAiZs, but NO Gundams for sure)
2) Arm Slaves, my favourite of these times. (Those in FMP series, and Sowrd_Monkey, you know the third one is one of them right?;) )
3) Battlemechs. That explain all. (However, their size will be reverted to about 12m to match with others. Hovering types are also welcome.)
4) Power Armour, or Battlesuits. (Tau XV8, XV15/25, APU in Matrix or even Dreadnought-type walkers, but they'll tend to be small, agile and hard to be seen.)
Or, if there're other mechs that act like these mechs can also be used. (Since I don't know all mecha's types......But of course, I'll have to see if these are reasonable.)

Now for the weapon and equipment part.
1. NO special offensive/defensive systems or other crap (so no Lambda Drivers, no Zero Systems, no D-Fields, no AT Fields, etc.)
2. Other systems, however, are freely to be used but please don't overpowered.
3. Specially for Camofluge systems, they can be used but with following rules:
a) Can't fire if in stealth mode, like the manner of Stealth Tank in C&C.
b) The range of anti-camofluge sensors can't reach over 1/2 of the normal sensor.
4. Any weapons can be used, including melee weapons, but no uber weapons.
I'm kinda hard to decide Energy Weapons, especially when they're used as melee weapons (eg. Beam Sabers). However, when thinking of ranged weapons, I have a few ideas about it:
a) If using as rifles or other handheld weapons, it'll count ammo or drain energy.
b) The internally-mounted energy weapons can drain reactor or causing the mecha to overheat (like those of Battlemechs).

These're just some basic ideas that I thought of, so let's continue with the discussion and make the general picture better!;)

Grim666
9th May 06, 6:44 AM
So... will there be plasma cannons and laserweapons? Machine-guns, autocannons and missle launchers are obviously. By the way you make things sound, so are huge swords. I'll join depending on what you are doing in this.

Sword_Monkey
9th May 06, 10:35 AM
Third one? I wish you get evrything before me for some reason there is no sight of series 3 in England, unless you are talking about the books which are even rarer and i have never read.

As for the mecha, aliens with mecha too, nice. No energy on human side i am fine with, i don't we should have lasers or plasma, unless our power source is a fusion reactor (hope not) nuclear power sure, just not fusion. maybe lightning cnnons, ionise the air then blast off a bolt or an EMP weapon, but that would ahve to be contained in a shell else the mecha firing it will get themselves too.

But mostly it should be huge ammo stacks for huge cannon turned machine guns firing round after round of massive shells.

Right I'll be back but i need to find out about the third...

Also if Orbital Frames from ZotE are going to be used purely for aesthetics they should be made smaller as they are too huge.

Klaus88
9th May 06, 10:43 AM
Eeerrr how about orbital frames are only used in space battles?

While land mechs are a lot more clunky?

EDIT: Oh god please no nuclear reactors! Sheesh I don't think we could do this boardwar with what amounts to a nuke going off ever few seconds!

Lestaki
9th May 06, 10:56 AM
We should use "cutscene scale" ZOE frames, IE the size of a chruch tops. Probably smaller. Not game scale, where they suddenly become so big a truck is their little toe... :wtf:

I vote we all get to fly messianic Jehuty-style superframes that are relics rather than anything else. Why? Because its fun, godamnit. ;) Maybe we stole them from the aliens or whatever.

Klaus88
9th May 06, 10:59 AM
A. flying machines that are 50x better then anything th enemey has is boring.

B. some of us like a challange when we're fighting.

C. How the hell would you get your hands on that many rare relics? And how the hell would you be able to pry them away from the units that discovered them and are using every trick in the book to hole onto them?

If anyone wants to fly a super mech they can but I'M leading a squadron of moblie suits.

Lestaki
9th May 06, 11:03 AM
You see, I have this thing for messianic characters. I just do. But the thing is- that is countered by enemies so diabolically powerful, they boggle the mind. In this instance, alein tech is likely to be far superior to our own, and we've hardly stolen ALL their uberframes, now have we? We have maybe ten. They have loads. And there's this bad guy called Anu... something who humiliates our uberframes ten times over... ;) That makes A and B irrelevant. And as for C... well, meh. I wasn't being very serious... :P

Yeah, yeah. I was joking. Probably... :giggler:

Klaus88
9th May 06, 11:10 AM
Ok one more thing. If we do have an aliens vs. humans thing can we avoid the sterotyped "earth is under siege by alien invaders" and instead have the humans attack the ALIEN home world?!

Lestaki
9th May 06, 11:12 AM
In which case we should have energy weapons and thec superiority... I'm confused. But I always HAVE wanted to write a story like that. I wanna be a "hawk" who demands the eradication of all alien kind. :D

Klaus88
9th May 06, 11:16 AM
The germens had better tanks and aircraft during the last years of WWII... but they were defending their homeland not the other way around.

You get where I'm coming from? Better weapons does not= instant win.

Lestaki
9th May 06, 11:24 AM
Better tanks and aircraft. But we're talking a matter of degrees here. Let's say... allies have tanks in WW1. Germans don't. Okay, so that wasn't decisive. But we're talking more like that- a paradigm shift. A far greater tech gap than mere fine tuning. I mean, to invade an alien homeworld you have to have FTL, and that in itself implies a high technology base. Whereas there is no necessesity for the defender to have FTL or advanced tech. Hypothetically, cavemen with spears could have been in the defender position, whereas they sure as hell couldn't have invaded an alien system. A higher tech base is not guarenteed, no- but its by all means implied. If the aliens have better tech- why didn't they invade us?

Klaus88
9th May 06, 11:35 AM
You misunderstand where I'm coming from Lestaki.

What I mean is can we skip the part where the humans beat off the alien invasion of earth and just go to the part where we've fought our way to the the aliens homworld and are kicking general arse?

Lestaki
9th May 06, 11:36 AM
Aww. I wanted to be the agrressors for once. :(

I'll stop spamming now...

Sword_Monkey
9th May 06, 12:19 PM
Klaus I meant a nuclear reactor that like all nuclear reactors is not weapons grade, and therefore cannot go Kablooie, just fzzsst, and spread radioactive love into the atmosphere when is breached, after all we dont care about the petty Alien world. Plus the Mecha will be resilient to radiation, they'd have to be.

Yeh can we be the agressors, sucks to be attacked for no reason cant we attack for no reason for once?

Everybody has to keep an eye on ammo, everybody has to keep an eye on wear and tear not just fight damage.
When designing your mecha, you must think of weight, strength, balance, ammo space, recoil, speed, jump, power(duration, output, etc), armour, size and shape.

No point in orbital frames they are just ridiculous, space ships do a much better job, even normal mecha are more plausible.

Klaus88
9th May 06, 12:23 PM
Right! sounds good!

I'll just make a really good main line mech. One that's really easy to make and can use a whole bunch of different weapons. It's not great at any one thing but there are a lot of them and they get the job done.

Sword_Monkey
9th May 06, 1:24 PM
Nice idea, there should be a bonus for the availabiltiy of your mech, rare ones should have more power but be 1) rare, and 2) experimental prone to failure etc. And common ones should be 1) reliable 2) well common.

I think I'll just go for a four legged sniper cannon mecha, supporting the others, maybe also have a good old satellite relay for contacing HQ and calling in air strikes via laser designation by allies. Light amrour, no camo, slow, huge cannon, decent supply of ammo, no melee ability, good jump though, or at least grappling hooks, long reload time, big recoil. Ooh and a decent crew escape mechanism, after all I would want to change mecha and develop my character a bit.

Klaus88
9th May 06, 1:36 PM
The Z-17 frontline mechnized combat walker.

The Z-17 is roughly human shaped in apperence.

It has medium armor, but no shields. It has a very limited sensor jamming ability but no camo.

It's strenghts lie in it's versitle weapons package, it's ease of mantinace and construction and the sheer mind boggling number of Z-17s there are.

The only way it can fly is if you throw it off a cliff. It does have boosters that allow it to dodge and "jump" but it cannot remain airborne for any lenght of time.

it can carry the 120 MM combat rifle, the 80mm submachine gun, a heat seeking missle lancher, a chain gun (with uramium depleted rounds), A RPG (for city and close in fighting).

General idea is from the Zaku's in Gundum alright? Those things are the coolest mechs EVER!

A bit too blocky for me but quite nice.

Anthrawp - Mechanised Multilimbed Support Suit

One 500mm caliber cannon
Four hydraulic support legs
Heavily armoured pilot carriage, lightly armoured chassis.
Powerful legs, slow but immense jumping ability.
Grapple hooks for scaling vertical surfaces.
External ammunition storage.
200x optical zoom, 1600x digital zoom, digital image scanning features, infra red, x-ray etc.
Radio relay system, scrambled, some other basic encryptions.

It's also quite big, not as tall as a bipedal mech, but alot longer, the cannon being huge too.

I hope im not the only one here who is a Front Mission/Armored Core fan. The armor thing is on scale with the game im playing on. Feel Free to use this as a tactical mech but it is too big to be mass produced.

Wanzerieg Concept:
Legs-Quad-1 1/2ft thick armor-Has multiple boosters to help in flight control and space.-Can jump higher thanks to 4 legs.
Body-2 ft thick armor-Houses cockpit-Houses power core-Houses 4 240mm machine cannons of death ;)
Right Arm-1/2ft thick armor-Holds a Bustershield with spike at the tip-Shoulder mounted 1250mm Heavy Assault Cannon.
Left Arm- 1ft thick armor-Converted arm into 635mm Autocannon-Shoulder houses ammo for Autocannon.
Head-1ft thick armor-Houses main cameras and comm systems-2 100m Chainguns mounted on sides of Head.
Back- 1/4ft armor-Heavy boosters systems help get the mech off the ground-Ammo storage for Heavy Assault Cannon and chest cannons.
Height: 74ft when standing 58 ft while crouching
Weight:62tons Empty 97tons Full
Speed: 92mph Running 350mph Boosting
Camo: Too Large
Sensor: 3 miles Broad 1mile detailed.
Description: The Wanerieg Heavy Assault Suit is essientially a walking fortress with out he arments. Although indeed heavily armed and armored it is larger than nearly all mobile suits with only few exceptions. This behemoth is used only in tactical situations due to its cost and its relatively small ammo storage and low close combat abilities. It usually disengages a foe that is too close by activating the retreat boosters on its legs and firing a shot with its chest cannons and left arm cannon. The Heavy Assault Cannon mounted on its right shoulder is a powerful weapon capable of destroying multiple mechs in a single burst. It fires 3 highly explosive rounds that are capable of passing through a mech or object before exploding. These explosive rounds can be replaced with different kinds like a sniper round or Artillary/Crowd Control round. The true power of the heavy mech comes in its ability to fly. This suit will jump up into the air and activate all of its boosters and land in the middle of a group of unsuspecting enemies however this rapidly depletes energy and overheats the mech.

The Ratings:
Armor: 5/5
Weapons: 4/5
Camo: 0/5 *So big it cant hide*
Ammo: 2.5/5
Speed: 3/5
Sensor: 3/5
Energy: 4/5
Strengths:Extremely well armored and armed. Capable of quick retreat and strong flying abilities.
Weaknesses: Low Closecombat abilities. Has only one arm. Is too large to hide and camo so is often easy to spot. High Upkeep.

Klaus88
9th May 06, 4:36 PM
If this is a human mech then,

at the tip-Shoulder mounted 1250mm Heavy Assault Cannon.
Left Arm- 1ft thick armor-Converted arm into 635mm Autocannon-Shoulder houses ammo for Autocannon.
Head-1ft thick armor-Houses main cameras and comm systems-2 100m PDS lasers mounted on sides of Head.
Back- 1/4ft armor-Heavy boosters systems help get the mech off the ground-Ammo storage for Heavy Assault Cannon and chest cannons.

No bloody energy weapons like lasers!

If it's alien then it should be a lot more streamlined and compact.

Red Fox
9th May 06, 4:45 PM
sorry I must have slipped there. Edited and it is human not alien. Aliens would be much more rounded and actually not build a behemoth like this.

Fft. So long as we're comparing schematics;

Kenbishi Industries EW-204 Multiped Tank, complete with 15-shot 105mm 'tank gun' loaded with unique ammunition, depending on the job at hand. Twin 7.62mm gatling guns housed inside the 'arms', nightvision, thermoptic camouflage, EMP-resistant and can even hack into multiple systems - everything from satellite imagery to guided missiles. It's even got lasers (the realistic kind) to disrupt laser-guided missiles by sending out hundreds of targets. Four legged and equipped with wheels for relatively quick maneuvering, the EW-204 owns your little mechas.
Except maybe for the big ones. :(

'course.. I probably won't join or anything. I just like the EW-204. Then again, the Kenbishi standard light multiped tank was my first love.

You could give it a few bombs i guess?

BrianGeneral
10th May 06, 3:18 AM
Well, all the mechs created by all of you are okay......But as I said for Battlemechs, all mechs' height are limited to 12m.
And......Klaus, 120mm Rifle? That's clumsy :wtf:
Oh yeah, man-sized mechs, as I mentioned, can also be used.

Even I didn't call for mecha posts, I'll post my personal one:
A-8 "Swordsmith" Arm Slave (look: Think of ARX-7 from FMP but Grey in colour)
ECS Camofluge System and ECCS
ECM system
20mm Chain Gun x2, mounted in head
XML-30 40mm Assault Rifle (40 shots per round, 4 magazines)
600mm Armour Cutter x2
As an AS, it's tended to be agile, hard-hitting and moves like a normal man will do. However, it's armour is very fragile in order to move fast.

By this chance I'll introduce the 4 basic type of mechas' characteristics:
Mobile Suit (2 or 4 legs)
Good: Well-armoured, can carry a shield, can take almost any handheld weapons.
Bad: Not as agile as an AS.

Arm Slave (2 legs)
Good: Most agile among the types, can mount an array of hi-tech equipments or systems, its OS can be modified depending on situations.
Bad: Can lead to malfunction easily due to its complex designs, fragile armour and can cease to function if the reactor was hit.

Battlemechs (2 or 4 legs)
Good: Insanely armoured and armed, meaning they can mount a fearsome array of weapons while withstanding from tremendous damage before being brought down.
Bad: Slowest in any means.

Battlesuits (any shape)
Good: Very small, meaning almost unseen on normal radar. Can pack some heavy anti-mecha or personnel weapons, or bringing some explosives to damage enemy mechs in battle.
Bad: They can't withstand a step by a normal mech, obviously.

I'll amend or add stuff later.

Sword_Monkey: Still no words of TSR in England? That sucks......In Japan they'll release an OVA for it :wtf:
And for the books, a new chapter has begun.

Klaus88

I don't mean to argue and dont mean any offence but here is a proposed chart of height limits. Ill not say that battlemechs are OMGWTFBBQ huge because evertually things become a little big to handle and maintain.

Well i have never seen or looked up anything from Full Metal Panic *Currently borrowing a few episodes from friend* And i say that battlemechs should be relatively larger than the rest due to their arments and power. If something was only 12m and was doing more damage and able to hide better than a Mobile suit then that basicly is a mini gundam which is what were trying to avoid. Just remember my orginal statement of that bigger mechs are harder to hide and maintain but better armed and armored.

BrianGeneral

No, AS only rely on their ability to mass-producing (like RK-92 or M6) or agility (M9 or Codarl), but their armour is certainly thin when comparing to MS, meaning 1 well-placed shot can take them down.
(Ever saw a sniper can take down a MS? AS can be downed by this way however.)
