View Full Version : Best Eurovision winning song from the past 10 years?

Since the recent buzz of Lordi winning Eurovision, I felt it was time to take a look back at the recent, and certainly interesting last 10 years of the contest. This is of course the time when Ireland and Britain's dominance came to a halt and the smaller Euro countries took over.
So I beg the question, which was the best of the winning songs?
I'll go for Love Shine A Light, simply because it was such a proud moment for everyone in the UK, although 2003, 2004 and 2006 also had great winners.

Does anyone else see the band "Katrina and the waves" as strangely prophetic :o

Denmark: Olsen Brothers
I throw in some motivation:
It goes a bit into what I consider to be a schlager song.
Schlager (German Schlager, literally "a hit") is a style of popular music that is prevalent in northern Europe, in particular Germany, Austria and Scandinavia, but also to a lesser extent in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. It is characterised by sweet, overly sentimental ballads with a simple and memorable melody. I really have to say that half or one third the starting field this year should have been thrown out. Not my intention to flame a "whats a schlager" discussion, but there it stands.

Whut he said. I'm sure I'd recognize a few of the tunes if they were played to me, but I ain't gots no clue about any of the songs from their names along.
"whats a schlager"It's kind of like a schpilsener, except it's fermented at a colder temperature. It's not as malty and roasty tasting as a schstout. Personally, I prefer brown schale.

Everybody knows that the only good thing which came from Eurovision is Moskau by Dschinghis Khan.
Ho ho ho ho ho! Hey!

Perhaps Olsen, but I'd rather go with Abba...
I agree with the above poster, please add an additional option stating:
[ ] Eurowhat contest?
To see the number of people not too familiar with it.

This poll is futile. Barely anybody here listens to the crap, which usually wins the eurovision. You could aswell ask if people prefer Lordi, Lordi, Lordi or Lordi :P

Will you please stop with this Eurovision nonsense? It hurts my faith in mankind..
PS yeah.. ABBA. I'm not saying that because i'm swedish but because they were actually a genuine band with genuine music wich stretched far beyond the crap that is the Eurovision...

/me hates ABBA
:jk:
EDIT: Damn, it seems they fixed the /me bug :( /EDIT
But from the last ten years (at least from what I remember), Lordi was the best, all the others were crap.

They all suck.
I was so frustrated when Greece won last year; after our song winning, you could expect every electronic device you switched on to play "My number one". I half expected that my fridge would play it each time I opened it to get a snack. :S

Ok then, every UK person that likes Eurvision was proud.

Wasn't Mai Ai Hii a winning Eurovision song or was O-Zone just surprisingly successful at being crap?

Oh my...
well, I don't know if it counts, but in 2000 Nightwish attempted Eurovision with Sleepwalker.
Though they didn't get past the semi-finals. They got by far the most votes from their viewers, but the jury ranked em last, so they couldn't go to finals.
Probably one of the reasons why Tuomas Holopainen had a few conversations with Lordy, encouraging him to trash the Eurovision-Contest.
The jury from back then is imho by a margin responsible for the desaster, which Eurovision encountered this year.

Watched the Lordi vid on youtube.com the other day. I think I shit myself.
Seriously though, how does a song called "Hard Rock Hallelujah" win anything? Someone tell them the 80s are over. The members of GWAR should kick their asses. Posers.

Ummmhhh..... I have news for you. Gwar didnt attend the contest. Lordi was without competition.
Anyway, if you think Lordi is a ripoff off GWAR you are mistaken.Lordis style is a tribute to KISS.
Kiss invented it. Gwar exploited it. Lordi redefined it.

Thats impossible. GWAR are intergalactic slave traiders that are thousands of years old. It says so on their new album's promo site:
Forged in the furnaces of the Master’s Slave-Pits. Created to be the most destructive force in the universe. Banished to Earth for colossal crimes too hideous to be named. GWAR, the most bellicose band in cosmic history, is back from the frozen wasteland of Antarctica with their most searing musical assault ever -- prepare yourself, human filth, for the metal mayhem that is GWAR’s latest and greatest album to date -- prepare yourself for War Party.

Gwar looks retarded compared to lordi.
GWAR (http://www.starkult.de/downloads/content_pix/gwar.jpg)
Lordi (http://www.palmbeachpost.com/shared-blogs/palmbeach/cerabino/media/lordi.jpg)
Although there both wierd looking Gwar just seems stupider. Maybes its the oversized weapons and other stupid thing-a-ma-jigs.

Gwar looks more stupid than someone who looks equally retarded? A curious and intriguing concept.

Somehow in the wierd costumes they have, Lordi has managed to maintain more realism and less fantasy land then Gwar.
