View Full Version : How early do you resign?

Mithie
26th Jul 06, 6:30 AM
I've played a lot of games where my opponent just gives up and resigns after losing to me in some way at tier 1, be it the first engagement, the death of a hero, or map control. Do you guys resign at the first sign of trouble, or stick it out even though you pretty much know it's going to be a skating contest - going up hill?

Grabnutz
26th Jul 06, 6:36 AM
I tend to stick through it, as many times I've been able to pull off a comeback, or at least make the game interesting for the opponant. Also once, when all I had was my HQ on half health, with a huge IG army smashing it down, he disconnected, and I got the win!
However back in the 1.3 days I ended up leaving in disgust everytime my orks had to fight eldar.

Well, if my base is overrun and I know there is no way to get back from this, I will do either one of the following:

1.) Quit straight away
2.) If I am playing coorperative, I will try to send a builder unit over to my friend's base and start from scratch again. If none of my builders made it out of my overrun base, then I will quit.

There's only one reason to quit; when you know you've been beaten. Period.

Some players can never learn to tell, and therefor never quits early.

ConanBuddah
26th Jul 06, 6:51 AM
Depends on my mood...

One time I kept playing a 4v4 even though 2 of my teammates dropped out (disconnect)...

Other times if my allies are really annoying me I will quit (If you cant say anything nice dont say anything at all ;)

I will play on till its blindingly obvious that there is no way in hell that I can counter the upcoming attack (usually tacmass, lol) - For instance if ive stupidly lost my BM and have no econ, lost all my squads and I have a lame econ or if hes got take and hold victory counting down and all I have is some squads defending my base where hes too scared to attack or I just gets slaughtered due to critical mass due if I try to counter.

I never quit, and it disgusts me when my allies quit at the first sign of trouble. I've seen games in which it seemed that all was lost, and suddenly there is a reversal of fortune. It's rare, but it does happen. So, I play until the last man is dead, the last building demolished, the last soul devoured.

Commander ASOP
26th Jul 06, 7:42 AM
The only time I ever dropp is playing auto.

If I have been totaly Pwnd and he is in my base in teir 1. This is just because he will take forever to take the buildings down and the fight is over. It would be too rare an occurance for him to disconnect and by this point he has earned the win.

Outside of auto I always fight to the death. Their are too many chances to turn things around to give up. I have lost an ally and won through poor play on the otherside or they lagged out. Even lost my HQ and all builders but still had a rax so I just made basic units as support and meat shields for allies.

If things look too bad and I know I am going down I make sure to donate all power and req to allies to help them out.

the_splurge
26th Jul 06, 7:48 AM
If your base is over-run, and you are going to lose, you lose. You don't quit. I don't anyway. Dropping is pathetic, which is why any game I host will always say 'no droppers'.

i agree with buggo, but there is no way that many people actually do that

i fight for fun, which means fighting til the end! occosionally you actually end up winning but most of the time, you just really annoy the opposite team

(i play eldar, go figure :) )

Mule
26th Jul 06, 8:11 AM
No... No... No...
Hiding with eldar is not fighting. It is simply a waste of time.
A very annoying waste of time if you ask me.

I quit when I've lost my army, and the enemy is sure to win. Like when I have ~+20/+0 resources, no troops, my HQ's health bar is dropping rather rapidly and I know there's nothing I can do to stop him.

Depending on what race I'm playing. If I'm some evil gitz I will stay and fight till the end because you don't feel guilty afterwards about all the casualties. Mostly orks and chaos. Watching evil troops get mowed down is most satisfying even when there your own.

I understand staying to the end and do ti myself but the cloaked gates can get kind of rediculas at times. I have spent as much time finding gates as killing the enemy and while I think you do have the right to play however you want it is bad sportsmanship.

Many of us have limited time to play. After the kids are asleep and before you go to bed for work or on a rare weekend rainy day. Or for some of you before your mom kicks you off. Because of that I want to play as many good games as possible. Running around for 10min finding cloaked webways is not my idea of fun. If you have no allies left no econ and no troops please give it up. Just my opinion

26th Jul 06, 9:16 AM
A7X, you are the biggest reason why I dislike fighting Eldar. Hiding a lone webway in the map so that if I/we were going to win, an additional 20 minutes would be needed to find you. God damn I hate that. And to hop on the spoiler boat.

I drop if I lose my HQ and my partner(s) drop. If an ally (one ally) drops at the beginning, I stay, because i've won quite a few games where the player # on each team were not in my favor.

Ifitmovesnukeit
26th Jul 06, 9:20 AM
I don't really understand this so-called "badge of honour" that people have about never quitting. If I have a huge enemy army in my only remaining base, my army is gone, and all I can do is pointlessly spam cultists or scouts at a crushing tier 3 army, what's the point? I can quit and start another game, and my opponent gets credit for his victory sooner. I don't see the point of staying if you're basically reduced to spectating and all your opponent is doing is clicking on building after building to annihilate.

In a 2v2 if my ally drops, I'll probably drop too. A much better player than me might be able to win, but I'm not good enough to beat 2 players at once, so again, no point staying.

I will, of course, not quit just because I lost an advantage or things look a bit hairy. I also will not drop on an ally without us both agreeing that the situation is hopeless.

I like to play to the end, to give satisfaction to the opponent. When someone drops as soon as I start to win, I never feel sure I had them completely beaten yet.

That said, I would drop out if the other player is being really unpleasant, but only if I have no chance of recovering.

I've played games where I thought my partner and I were dead but we just kept cranking out units as the opposing team attacked the tratigically WRONG stuff. Eventually we prevail and win. We've also had my partner fight with every last breath as he slowly dies as I tier up and demolish the other two teams bases which were un protected. Never give up, never surrender!

i usually fight to the end, but if there is no possible way to win i gg and start another one. if i play eldar(once in a geat while) and i've got bases everywhere i usually uncloak them and let them get wiped out while trying to take a few of them with me.

When my teamate quites and im up with a 1v2 or a 2v3 il make the bigest army that i can and ready my defences. Sometimes they come right for me unprepared and i end up winning. Same with 2v3s, whena teamate quits i get an orbital relay asap n strike first with a deepstrike and make it a 2v2 asap :p Doesnt work everytime though D:

I remeber one time when I was being rushed by an Orc army, I was Space Marines in a 3v3, but they took out all my structure except my HQ. My teammates were busy holding there sides of the base and didn't have any resources to spare. So I just kept building scout marines in hope that I could stall them long enough till I could get reiforcments. Amazingly enough the guy didn't notice that I had scouts shooting at his orcs and evently I killed everyone of his orcs who attacked me. I had maxed out the # of squads I could have with scouts and barely had any money. My team and I ended up winning. But it was a along fight. There team kept calling me a hacker saying that there is no way that my scouts could have taken out there orcs. It was one of my best games that I have ever played. It was awsome.

Sometime i'll quit in disgust with other players but thats rare. Like an Eldar rush with Wraithlords against IG. I find tactics like that remove the whole point in playing if someone is dedicated to winning at the expense of not having fun while doing it. 95% of the time i'll keep fighting till my last building is gone, if only to annoy the other team :D and a few times when i'm the last one of a 3v3 or 4v4 game and i'm outnumbered 2 or 3 to 1 i'll just say GG once my army is smashed and they're in my base.

i don't play online, but skirmish vs computer is pretty much the same thing, only the enemy is so much dumber :Slap:

even if i'm going to lose,i'm not quitting the game, because i want to enjoy the great battle effects this game has.i'd really like to do a match against a friend, and we make some kind of deal to send an equal matched force against eachother, and watch the battle sequences, that's what i like the most about dawn of war.ever watched an apothecary finish off an enemy in cc?that swordplay is only one of the many things i enjoy.or the force commander/librarian's weapon movements.well, against computer this really doesn't get put to a maximum because they usually keep sitting in their base.seriously,if you're losing, why not make the best of it and enjoy what this game has to offer?if you quit then there's really no fun to it,unless your oponent is one of those guys who keeps laughing at you because you loose a battle against his force, then there's no fun to it.like someone said "if i'm going down,i'm taking a big chunk of the enemy troops with me"

It depends on opponent. After a tough fight with a worthy opponent that played with honor, the moments when the game turns into an inevitable win for you and you're on the home stretch to finally wiping your enemy out are perhaps the most enjoyable of the whole game; if your opponent played well, why deny the satisfaction of a complete win to him?

If your opponent is being a dick throughout the game, you'd do well to leave his company as soon as getting a win becomes physically impossible. You don't morally owe him anything.

For me, since i play solely over hamachi now, i know the opponents i face well enough, so the latter situation is nonexistant. Heck, noone i played against ever quit either.

The only way i drop is when its me on my own allies either drop or beaten and my base is getting overrun... i've had a time where my allie dropped and it was me left on my own so i set up my defenses (loads of turrents and mines) and built a army after i beat the attackes went on a counter attack and which led to my down fall  but i never quit normally its not in my nature...

Vileblood

i'm mixed while i have seen the defeated the rush or killed their commander early they consider it game over i have never quit for that. of course i don't rush either.

if it is clear i lost half my base is gone and overrun well its gg latas why waste time while they search for every building lp and what not. otherwise well i may lose but i'm gonna take some down with me! :salute:

on allies dropping well if its 4 vs 4 and 3 allies drop well i won't do that big waste of time. i may take on 2 knowing my chance to win is small but if i give them a decent fight it's all good.

YEAH ifn your base is getting mauled, you have no resorces, and no defenders theres another game is starting somewere "later".

either that or when I see my allie massing and sending nothing to aid in defence or offence thats a game killer for me.

bit of a silly poll. I resign at different times depending on the history of the battle. A good long winded battle, as soon as all troop producing builings gone, or when i have no troop and they r being attacked, more so to save opponents time, in a 1v1, when opponent reaches critical mass, in a cheesy game, eg 1.4 wl rush or comme rush never. sit back and hurl abuse till they take me down, when game starts and team player drops :p

Where's the "I don't lose" option? j/k

I fight to the brutal end in every game unless I absolutly have something to do. Granted if I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose and I have no hope I try to have some fun. Like say selling everything you have after maxing out on guardsmen and rushing the enemy in one final assult. Ahh the things I learned in Red Alert, but it sometimes worked then.

I never quit in team games. While my base is getting smashed by the enemy, my allies can tech, mass and then maybe get a win.

In auto, when my army is destroyed, my points are being decapped, the enemy has more troops, and is ahead in eco and tech, then I'll quit. No point hanging around when there is absolutely no chance of winning. It takes ages for a T1 force to down a HQ, so why wait around? I usually let them beat on my base for a bit, and the quit.

Inst
27th Jul 06, 1:41 AM
I guess I overestimate my abilities and think I can beat an army 25% bigger than mine through superior micro or unit quality. When the enemy army is far larger, I imagine I can force some casualties and try to play for teching time.

Khornight
27th Jul 06, 2:40 AM
Like control Monkey, I drop from 1v1 games when I *know* there is no chance. Just so we don't have to sit and watch my opponents army shooting at my HQ and anything that comes out of it.

In larger games I never quit, because I've seen some complete massacres still get turned around. When i first started I would quit as soon as I thought I was beat, but after reading this forum for a while I realised I was quiting too early.

I think that's why the poll doesn't reflect the online experience.

Actually sometimes in the interest of fair play i will drop. In a game a couple of weeks ago, I was blatently on the loosing side of a 2v2v2 but was clinging on. One of the players who was winning had to go, so I dropped so that he won't get a loss for his great play. No i think about it that sounds supid!

Where is the "My ally is IG and i am playing 1.5" option?

the_hunger
27th Jul 06, 3:05 PM
Based on my limited online gaming, I agree that more people drop than this poll reveals. Even though I voted "never drop," I must admit that I did drop yesterday after an opponent started ranting while destroying my base (my ally had already dropped). I wanted to deprive him of the pleasure of utterly destroying my base while forcing me to read his idiotic chatter. Otherwise, I like to stick around until the end.

One of the best games I've had was a 3v3 in which one of my allies got kicked in the first second of the game, making it a 2v3. That game lasted almost an hour! Even though we lost (of course), one of our opponents praised me for putting up such a tough fight. It was one of those precious moments in gaming when people totally forgot about stats, egos, and other BS and just enjoyed the game. It was good fun.

Being one who only plays team games for fun and not so concerned about stats, I just don't drop if the odds are looking bad. And I completely respect those players who are still trying to pump out cultists or guardsmen as I deepstrike them to death with termies and dreads. It just seems gutsy to me.

The only situation i quit is when i am the last player alive of my team and i loose all my units... in that situation it would be just annoying to force the other team to destroy my every building, as i have no means of fighting back.

Other than that, if there is a chance of winning, no matter how small, i wont quit :)

Sideshow
27th Jul 06, 4:21 PM
Sometimes it's obvious 1v1 that you're gonna lose, so you may as well quit and get another game on.
You should *never* quit on your allies though - every second you remain in the game ties up opposing forces for longer, giving your allies more of a chance to launch a counter attack or mount a defense.

Civik
27th Jul 06, 4:27 PM
I shoulda saved the replay of me getting my butt handed to me by chaos when I was playing as IG... The guy literally kept telling me to quit and calling me a newb as he was pounding on my command building. I refused and eventually he quit the game and left.

Apparently he didn't have time to get enough units there to actually destroy my HQ.

Didn't mean for my first ranked win in automatch to be like that but, whatever. :)

I just tend not to give up even when losing because I would expect the same from my opponent.

Moik
28th Jul 06, 4:37 AM
I never quit, but when I've been wiped out and they are just trashing my buildings to finish me off, I tend to give them a hand by deleting them all. Saves time, less annoying for the opponent, plus I'm not into the whole Eldar bug hunt tactic that some Eldar players use. Mostly because I've got better things to spend rec on than cloaking.
