What are things in your life that you have used or been taught to use that are now obsolete? I don't just mean like "I had a computer but then I got a better one" sort of thing. Was it useful? Could it still be useful? Do you miss it?

I remember using the card catalog system in libraries. It was pretty much phased out by high school though, as I don't remember using it there. I can't imagine computers have sped up finding a book much faster, as you still have to hunt the book down on the shelves somewhere. I could've used those cards recently too, as I was looking for a book but the library's online system was down for the whole week!

I hadn't heard anything at all about this one until I saw an ad for it today. As a fan of Westerns in general and of the original Lone Ranger TV series I should be excited by this, but there are a couple of things that make me a little concerned that it won't be as good as it could be...

1. It's Disney so the gunfights are likely to be played down.
2. Johnny Depp as Tonto. I hope that doesn't mean we will see a wisecracking Tonto as the star instead of the Lone Ranger.
3. If there isn't at least some homage paid to the TV show opening theme (The William Tell Overture) I think I'll strangle someone.

Not sure if something similar has been brought up before, I did a quick search and couldn't find...

Not sure if something similar has been brought up before, I did a quick search and couldn't find anything, so apologies if it has.

Anyways, this is based on a BBC Radio 4 programme called Desert Island Discs and basically, you've got to imagine that you're on a desert island. Now, I know there would be much more pressing things on your mind like food, shelter, beer and an internet connection, but forget all of that stuff and have a think about what 3 books you would take with you.

The books can all be the same genre if you want, fact or fiction and by the same author.
They can also be trilogies etc. in one volume.

Once you've decided, tell us what they are, and why you would want to take them. And a Kindle or similar device doesn't count, there's no electricity on the island to recharge the thing. :bigwave:

Mine are -

Herodotus - The Histories

This was the hardest of my three choices. I love Classical Literature and I had to think long and hard between this, The Aeneid, The Iliad, The Odyssey and a host of other books about the ancient world, as well as books by Alexandre Dumas etc. The reason this made it onto the list was that, despite its exaggerations, it gives us a glimpse on what the world was like 2500 years ago.

Robert Burns - The Complete Illustrated Poems, Songs and Ballads

This one was simple. Burns' work is outstanding, it's complex, funny, sarcastic and scathing in equal measure. Forget the man's flaws, he was, in my humble opinion, a genius. Plus, if I was on a Desert Island, I'd maybe be able to finally learn Tam o' Shanter.

Gene Brewer -K-Pax, The Trilogy

Science fantasy/fiction is without doubt my favourite genre. From Iain M Banks and Phillip K Dick to the Warhammer 40k novels, I love it, and it's also my release when I'm burned out doing research. But there was something about these books that were outstanding. The way Brewer managed to bring the subject of mental illness to the fore was funny and touching. And Prot was quite cool as well.

That's my three books, what are yours?

Cheers

Ah, summer is in the air. The trees are green and lush, the animals are in frolic, and the sun is shining with all its might.

The fools who like this season must be mad!

Look at those trees, it makes me sick just to look at them. They hold us hostage with talk of "global warming" and "carbon dioxide". And those flamboyant animals, they frolic wile we toil in the heat, creating monuments to our glory. And the sun, oh the sun. What non-human creation places itself so high in the sky and then oppresses everyone with steaming jealousy that is its hatred of the superior race, the human race!

If you were emperor, what grand things would you do with your unlimited power? Perhaps you would build monuments to your glory. Mabey cause the extiction of the pigeons? Or Mabey you would skulk all day in your octopus throne? The choise is yours,

One thing I would do is create a monument and statue improvement program were a statue of me is added to the monument of statue. One of the plans in the works is me hanging onto Washington's nose.

I know there are a few people here whose dreams of space fantasy were partly shaped in youth by works of fiction like Robotech and Starblazers.

I'm not sure if many know how Starblazers, originally named Space Battleship Yamato was just one of the works of Leiji Matsumoto.

Matsumoto also made other stuff, one of which is Space Pirate Captain Harlock, which I remember fondly from watching Galaxy Express 999 and seeing the story unfold from the perspective of an "ordinary" Earth boy on an adventure in space. Captain Harlock was one of the original badass characters of fiction in my youth. Arguments could be made as to whether he was molded from existing traits of "badassery" or whether he was the first fictional character to gather those traits into one person. Nevertheless, I cannot remember any fictional character from my youth that had the same enigmatic qualities as Captain Harlock. Of course, characters are just part of the picture, Leiji Matsumoto also happens to be a great storyteller.

Anyway, I am so hyped about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_P...ock_%28film%29

Watch this first: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...-teaser-posted
Then this: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/104763...iji_matsumoto/

Panhandling

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2010/08/28/how_panhandlers_use_free_credit_cards.html
A Toronto...

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2010...dit_cards.html
A Toronto reporter gave out five prepaid credit cards with balances of $50 and $75 and gave them to various panhandlers under promise that they return them afterward. The reporter then tracked where they spent the money. The sample size is small but there's an interesting mix of results, of with some returning them after spending a bit on food, some disappearing and then balances going to the LCBO (i.e. provincial liquor stores), and some being stolen. (The article worth the read, and reminds me how glad I am to have "made it".)

results from five people who took the cards, spoilered for length

Card 1: $50, handed to Jason. Spends $8.69 at McDonald’s. Returns card.

Card 2: $50, to Mark. Spends $21.64 at The Corner Place restaurant. Doesn’t return. Later spends $15.50 at the LCBO.

Card 3: $75, to Joanne. Card is stolen. Over two days, $24.95 spent at McDonald’s, $38.35 at the LCBO.

Card 4: $50, to Al. Card unreturned. Balance remains at $50

Card 5: $75. Laurie buys $74.61 worth of food, phone minutes and cigarettes at a gas station convenience store. Returns card.

What are your thoughts on panhandlers in your area? Do you have any good or bad run-ins with them? Would you give them money even if you knew it was going to be spent on liquor? What would make you do it yourself?

The discovery that will change the world: Post your hangover cure!

Violent pain in the eyeballs, thumping headache, hellish sickness, the energy of a little fluffy...

Violent pain in the eyeballs, thumping headache, hellish sickness, the energy of a little fluffy rabbit and a mouth that tastes like a small creature soiled itself in there. Various bruises of unknown origin and a wallet with a smoking hole where your money used to be.Anyone who's had too much to drink can relate to all of this and more.

Frankly I don't care about that. I want the cure. It has been something of a lifelong search, and having come close to something that works for me I wanted anyone elses cures for a hangover. They can be scientific, sensible, outlandish or simply obvious. Can Relicnews Revolutionise the world and come up with a definitive cure for a hangover?

Here's mine...

Take a pint glass, put in half a pint of very cold water, add to that about a quarter pint of tomato juice, top up with some fruit juice like pineapple/sweetened orange juice. Put in a teaspoon of salt and a splash of a spirit that hasn't got too strong a smell or taste(something like Cointreau is best as it gets hidden by the Orange juice). Stir it up.

Have one tablet of paracetamol and have a swig of the potion. Hold onto the kitchen side and hang your head to make sure you enjoy the thoroughness of your misery. Groan a little (it helps). If the tablet and juice stay down, drink the pint of potion of the next 15 minutes and don't sit down while you do it. Feel free to repeat the actions of holding onto something and groaning.

If the tablet and juice come up. Have some water, wait five minutes, try again. Try THIS to keep it down.

This works for me, it takes the worst of the pain from my head, it stops my stomach churning, it gives me a bit of energy, stops me being so sensetive about noise and usually within 15 minutes of finishing this I can begin to face breakfast.

Format for posting:

[[[ CATEGORY (IN CAPS): life tip, in two sentences max. ]]]

First sentence is the instruction.

Second (optional) sentence adds to it with why it's a lifetip, why it's so awesome, or other things to round it out.

May have multiple tips in a single post.

I'll start.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COOKING: For grilled cheese sandwiches, thinly slice blocks of old cheddar rather than using cheese slices. They are much more flavorful and the end-result is vastly superior.

WORK: Have a small container next to your bed and every night when you get home from work, put your keys, wallet, work phone, id tag, etc. in that container. It's awesome when you oversleep the next morning and everything's in only one place, and it prevents looking around for stuff every morning.

WORK: If you drive to work, keep a "personal emergency kit" in your car that contains things like deodorant, soap, a towel, a comb, pens, napkins, freezerbags for messes, underwear, antacids, a t-shirt and other old clothes, some dried food such as granola bars, and so on. Shit happens, and having the remedy in the car can be very useful.

So I already have my personal opinion on the matter, but she brings up what she believes to be an ethical point.

Here's my take:

I don't agree with desecrating his body or letting it rot, but I damned sure disagree with her even offering up her plot in Arlington to him; that's an affront and an insult to every man and woman who has fought and died for this country and she should know better. Bury him in a prison cemetery with other individuals who have been put to death... his family can attend, but he only deserves a plot with other criminals.

What are your thoughts on the subject and is she right to try to end the "family's suffering" or has she lost it? Does Tsarnaev deserve a burial? Does she have a responsibility to those who are interred in Arlington and does this offer violate their memory?

Greetings dolts, what with May having newly arrived, I have decided a virtual pursuit in Minecraft would benefit from a live action re-enactment so I have under-taken the plan to 'grow shit' and 'farm things'.

With that in mind I have a plot of land + a small variety of seeds (carrot, pumpkin, corn and potato) and the task of sticking them in the ground.

I figure I am not the only person on here who ever dabbled with the growing arts, so any other dolts growing anything of interest? crops? Ornamentals? Cacti?

Spill it here, let the forums know what you like to grow, the particulars of your collection, tips and tricks, how you go about growing and caring for them, stories or photos/vids of what you got, and all that.

The Chairman of the House Committe on Science, Space and Technology, one Mr. Lamar Smith, is proposing a new way to do science in the US. Mr. Smith by the way was the guy behind SOPA, and according to his wiki article is a Christian Scientist. So clearly he should be in charge of that particular subcommittee.

Anyways, this new, ingenious way seeks to 1) put the scientific geniuses in Congress more directly in charge of project funding which is awesome because these guys really know science, 2) make sure that there are no "duplicative" studies being carried out because fuck double-checking anything and 3) do away with the anonymous peer review based process that is currently being used.

When we don't let boys cry tears, some will cry bullets

(Pollack, 1999)

A striking sentence, overly simplistic and perhaps hyperbolic, but it came from a paper in the 90's where a small group psychologists suggested that American boys were being so "emotionally miseducated" that our culture emotionally cripples boys and that a set of unique stresses could propel some young males down troubled paths. The basic jist of the argument was that conformity to traditionalist masculinity meant that boys are thought to numb their feelings, including empathy, sympathy and other ingredients of pro social behavior, combine this emotional disconnection with increased exposure to violence through entertainment and decreased adult supervision and you get a recipe for disaster (Ballantine, 1999).

I'll link a summary of the paper here, it's quite short and easy to read. It is a summary and from the 90's, so id take it with a pinch of salt. http://aia.berkeley.edu/strengthenin...%20handout.pdf

Now id like to clarify, I am no expert in this subject area, nor do I fully agree with everything in the above link, it appears overly simplistic and puts too much emphasis on "emotional miseducation" while ignoring a host of other factors that play into someone shooting up a school.

But what I wanted to get across is, in my opinion we are in Western Society (male and female) thought to numb our emotions, cause they are considered a vulnerability and as a consequence, this leads to all kinds of symptoms, varying in degrees of severity. E.g. Avoidance behaviors such as drug use, spending, overeating etc and a contributing factor in some mental health issues such as Anxiety, Depression etc and in some cases, criminality. This is for both sexes, although acceptability of how they express emotions varies of course.

Now disclaimer time again, I believe "emotional miseducation" is not exactly new to society and is a contributing factor to some of our problems, not the sole reason for them (nothing is ever so simple..) We have a range of environmental and genetic factors at play contributing to a host of societal and personal health issues.

All that said, many of us probably consider how we control and express our emotions as healthy, but are we in denial? To varying degrees of course. :p
