I believe this is either caused by the drive running in ms-dos compatibility mode, or a virus.
If you're in windows 9x/ME right click on my computer and go to properties, then go to the Performance tab. It should say "Your system is configured for optimal performance" there. If there's something wrong with your HDD setup, you'll see an error there.
As I wrote in another thread, I found that HW was not able to write save games into a 40 GB NTFS partition, WinXP home.
It worked after I installed it into a 8GB FAT32 partition. Guess it's the size that matters.
