The Hrud/Skaven

I've also heard that the Skaven HAVE made it into the 40k universe, in the guise of the Hrud.

all i know is that the Hrud live in warrens and are a pest. i think some guy in Inquisitor has medecine made out of them. what do they look like? are they intelligent? do they have technology? have there been any major battles/wars with them?

Robert Frazer 11th Jan 06 5:44 PM

The Hrud are a secretive and dimunitive race, and, indeed, their physiology of anthropomorphised rodents does bear parities to Fantasy Battle Skaven - although the Hrud are substantially cleaner than Skaven could ever hope to be. ;)

The Hrud are (as far as we know) sentient and, although a minor race in Warhammer 40,000, do actually enjoy fairly high connections - the "Watchers in the Dark" that accompany the Dark Angels (one of them is Azrael's helmet-bearer in the tabletop model) are actually Hrud.

Hrud are also apparently potently psychic, to the extent that they seem to be absolutely impervious to all sorts of physical attack (this is mentioned with specific reference to Azrael's helmet-bearer, so I'm not sure whether this is a racial trait or just an ability endowed on the one individual). Whether this is because they can erect phenomenally durable force-fields around themselves, or because they implant subconscious suggestions in the minds of enemies to make the subject Hrud not be recognised as a threat, hasn't been specified.

There is one reference to the Imperium coming into conflict with the Hrud - the 592-602.M41 crusade on Faseene, where the Kashann Rough Riders served with distinction in the pursuit of partisan Hrud, allowing the main Guard formations to demolish their warrens. HOWEVER, this is only from the Chapter Approved "Creature Feature" article, so it shouldn't be read as canon!

and where did you get this info on the watchers in the dark robert?

Thalasion 11th Jan 06 6:50 PM

I'm sure there are references to them in fluff to do with the great crusade...

Fith Knight 12th Jan 06 4:37 AM

This get asked a lot... The Hrud are NOT Skaven, but the Skaven used to be Hrud. They were Chaos-worshipping Hrud who were casted into another dimension or something (i.e, The WH FB universe) where they still are today. Thee Skaven worshipped a chaos god called The horned rat or the great horned one.
This is actually a rather interesting thought... There are obviously more to chaos and the warp than what people are aware of.

LordSolarMach 12th Jan 06 7:59 AM

....or it could just be that the Horned Rat is all of the Chaos Gods rolled into one for the skaven.....who needs to seperate them when they worshipped all of them equally before that??

Aron_DeTomado 12th Jan 06 9:35 AM

The Skaven are freakin IG! Why doesn't anybody listen to me?

Sword_Monkey 12th Jan 06 1:49 PM

I smell bulls#@*t and it drift form Frazers area;

....I am always paranoid about Frazers posts (so i may just be madly rambling) but one day he shall start a crazy rumour!! He will i tell you, and we will all beleive him.

Hrud sound crazy powerful, Frazer may be telling the truth but only from random articles and rumour.

That be a Hrud at the bottom. Real psyker lookin.

Are you sure about that Robert? As the Dark Angels are incredibly Xenophobic even for Adeptus Astrates, to allow a group of Xeno creatures to be members within one of the Chapters inner circles seems very unlikely. Saying that though I can’t give any explanation as to what the Watchers in the Dark are and as far as I know neither has GW.

As for the Skaven being Hrud expelled to another dimension for worshiping The Horned Rat, it seems a little absurd.

None the less, that stuff is true.

The only real facts I could dig up on the Imperium vs Hrud was the Chinchare battle between the Hrud and the Dark Hands.

Also the Iron Hands tried to exterminate them in the Great Crusade - but they didn't get them all as they can shift dimensions.

Fith knight what source of fluff are you using?

Inquisitor Severnius and a Deathwatch kill team thwarted the nocturnal warriors of the Hruds attempt to capture an Adeptus Mechanicus base.

I might have lied when I said it was official, but I was just meaning it is`nt something conjured in my own head. I found that info on a web site (seemed official).

Apocalypse_now1 12th Jan 06 3:30 PM

My mistake Fifth it was indeed the Iron Warriors, I was still thinking of the Dark Hands when I wrote it.
Apologise to all.

I've fallen into that trap a time or two myself; if it doesn't say GW anywhere, chances are it's not official.
