Windows 2000

Is there any way to install CoH on Windows 2000? I refuse to believe that after waiting for as long as I have for this open beta that I will be stopped at the last moment by an idiotic opperating system restriction.

Certainly there is some way to trick the installer so it thinks I'm running Windows XP. And an "upgrade" to XP is out of the question.

Also, I notice that it uses Windows Installer (.msi filetype). Is there any I can remove the OS restriction from the .msi file itself? I just can not accept that I'm going to have to give up now and I don't plan on upgrading my OS to XP just months before Vista comes out. It would be a waste of money.

Please, if you have any ideas, I beg you, help me. Thanks in advance.

I indicated that I was using Windows 2000 to Fileplanet. Why is Windows XP required? The system architectures between 2000 and XP are not that dissimilar. Both are based off of Windows NT. The only reason Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows 2000 at all is because they want to force people to buy Windows XP, which is only marginally better than 2000, if at all.



Either way though, I won't buy Windows XP just months before Vista's release. I will continue trying to get the installer to work so I can see for myself if it will work or not. I won't just give up. Not after waiting for the open beta.

Well, Windows 2000 was released in, what, 1999? So you've had 6+ years to improve your operating system by buying XP. As a tech, XP is superior to 2000, so I can't see why (barring money) you'd not want to get it.

I tend to think they forbid it for a good reason. Presumably, something doesn't work with Windows 2000.

Windows XP was release in 2001, just two years after Windows 2000. Its not as superior as you might think. I've tried XP, and frankly, I don't like it. Windows 2000 works much better for me.

Also, how logical would it be to spend hundreds of dollars on an OS that will be completely obsolete in just a few months? Vista is going to be released soon. I'm not about to buy XP just months before Microsoft rolls out a much better OS.


As for them having a reason for doing this. They might have, but I'd rather find out for myself. I've seen game developers put OS restrictions on games before, and when those restrictions were removed they ran perfectly. This might be a similar situation.

Also, Cyborg, I'm looking into several possible options on bypassing the installer OS restriction. I'll let you know the second I get the results.

Heh. I wish I could. In fact, I've been wanting to install the Vista Beta for awhile, but sadly my DVD burner is on the fritz. For now, I'll just have to figure out how to bypass this restriction.

It might work or it might not, but if it doesn't, at least I'll know for sure. If it does, my wait will be justified.

(Edit 1) I've made progress. I removed the OS restriction and am installing it now. Stand by... This looks promising.

There are several core pieces of tech that we use that don't support Windows 2000. I know it's a pain for some, sorry.

I'm having Fileplanet update the download area to clearly call out this fact.

You're right though. Just finished the install and determined that it can't be run on Windows 2000. Sorry Cyborg. Looks like we're in for a long wait. Oh well.

That might be true Druidika, but what choice do we have? Plus, I've been thinking about upgrading to the Vista Beta as my primary OS, and now that I have ordered a new DVD burner I'm going to do just that.

If you happen to have a 64bit processor MS had a trial of XP64 you could also download. The key I was given was good for a year. That should hold you over until Vista. It wasnt a Beta either, and required a lot less memory (if your PC is borderline Vista friendly). I know Nvidia has some fairly good drivers for XP64 also.

Fantastic work! I never would have guessed that Microsoft would offer a trial of their latest OS like this. I'll reformat my drive ASAP and then install this OS. I've been wanting to see what XP64 is like anyway.

K, it works (and looks and plays good) but is quite slow to get up and running. Not sure if they're going to optimize anymore for Vista as Vista's not due out yet.

Getting into a MP game might be a pain, as it took upwards of 7 minutes to load the tutorial (takes around 30 seconds for windows XP).

Note, I'm trying on Vista 32 bit, as 64 Bit vista is not ready for primetime yet (more like 3rd party vendors are not ready with drivers, but you know what I mean).

Errr that's Windows XP 64 Bit. I'd not advise trying that. Go for Vista 32 bit if anything.
