Unplug your modem to make the other guy lose

This is something a lot of people seem to be using to be a jerk.

It's happened to me 3 times today. I will start winning against someone in a ranked 1v1, and they'll unplug their modem in order to make me get a loss rather than a win.

What do they care? They're getting a loss anyway.

I think I'll start doing this if I lose. Fight fire with fire right?

Ive had this happen to me twice today. TWICE. Both times I was spanking the guy hardcore- one I was in his undefended base with 3 stugs and had almost the entire map except the city, and in the other... I think I had all 3 points and he was down to 50 VP. Although on the screen it said "your are victorious" both counted as losses.

Well, If youll plan to do that, I think you'll should post an obvious warning agaisnt that in the news section of Relic Online. Deterence is far more effective than punishment alone.

People shouldn't need a "don't be an asshole" warning.

I'd rather the assholes get banned than be pre-warned and slip under the radar.

What happens if your modem actually just keeps dropping out of it's own accord?

I'm guessing they've a way to tell when it only happens when they're losing.

Just out of curiosity, when watching game replays sometimes it cuts short and a message pops up with some sort of fatal exception error (cant remember exactly what it says) does this mean the opponent pulled the plug?

Hehe this guy tried to tell me he was playing his first game and to take it easy, his stats said he had 2 wins, 6 losses, and asked for allies so we switched, and i got him down to 70 VP and he left the game lol, thats happened to me twice. So thats nice to know that you track them.

I'm confused as to what pulling the plug on your modem does... does it simply mean they get dropped immediately and you get a loss? Does it freeze the game and force you to quit eventually? What's the difference between that and just quitting?

  19. #19
I'm not too much for stats, but I was wondering why my automatch win/losses weren't matching up. I had kinda a crappy day. Won four and lost two, but for some reason both my losses showed up and only one win. Is the dropping causing this or just general stat lagging behind?

    This makes me happier.

I know it's a beta and everything, and eventually my ranks and what not will go away, but I'm really glad to hear something is being done.

    Thanks.

It takes a few minutes for the stats to update.

As for unplugging your modem, I think this is what happens: The guy unplugs his modem, the game loses contact with him and believes that you have dropped from the game. Since he unplugged his modem, naturally his game thinks the same thing, problem is, he was already losing, so what's the difference to him?

  21. #21
Well the thing was I won a game, it didn't update, lost a game, won a game, lost a game, won a game and won a game, but my stats before the 5th game said -2 streak and the win column hadn't changed. Last I checked its still said streak 1 but that may be due to the standard update lag inherent in all these things...The last game I played the game ended as soon as I gained map control and wiped out his MGs with snipers. Is there a time limit on this exploit being effective? I know that the ONLY time I dropped because my cable crapped out (which I was crushing the other guy, naturally) I'm fairly certain I did get a loss.

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but if someone "surrenders" you are informed, if they disconnect from the modem it just ends, correct?...maybe I am just thinking of the notification from 2v2s.

Wouldn't it be easier to fix the exploit?

When damage is done its done only if you erase his games with the victims. Helps me really nothing if you ban the guy after 1 month!

I hate rankings anyway and this is sadly the most stupid thing the developers could come up with. Make tournaments ok but not public games shouldnt count!

btw how does the rank work anyway?

Is it just 1+1+1 or does it take into account one gets beaten by a lesser skilled player so the lesser player gets more points like the GuildWars rank?

What happens if you go to the menu and quit while playing 1v1? Does your opponent get the win (as he should)?

I think you should have an option to end the game prematurely if you're obviously losing, but I wouldn't want to screw up the stats for anyone.

they need a surrender option, no sense in wasting a lot of time in a losing battle (especially annihilation), I don't know if quitting has the same effect but it would make things nicer if you could just give up when you know you're whipped

Exactly. A surrender option is precisely what's needed.

There already is a surrender option. If you go to the menu and press Quit, you are then returned to the lobby and receive a loss, while your opponent receives a win, like it's supposed to be. I don't understand why one player dropping due to connection loss punishes BOTH sides, however - i hope that's unintended and will be fixed....

If that is indeed how it works, then all is well. I was just worried that your opponent might receive a loss as well.

Surely you should get a win?

I suspect because, it being a peer to peer game, they don't actually know who disconnected from who. Not sure though.

Probably the same reason why you both get the 'lag grace' message when one of you lags, and thus you can both kick the other one if you're fast enough.

Hmmm, this needs to be addressed. This must have happened to me at least 4 times but I didnt realise why I wasnt getting wins until I checked the forums.

I have a -4 losing streak because of this, though it's unsure to me who's doing the lagging as I'm seeing 'player X is lagging for station: SuckyDucky' with SuckyDucky being me, followed by him lagging, then him dropping, then me getting a loss.

  34. #34
shouldnt this - and the kick for being laggy - both just give a neutral result?

that way its merely annoying for the winning player (losing a def win) rather than receiving a loss for no reason. I was under the impression that that is how it works for kick anyway. Happened to me twice today and the match just didnt get counted either way.

I agree. Moreso for the kick box appearing in team games and people who are not lagging getting kicked. I'm hoping that all these little bugs are being ironed out at present.

If they can track this, like Tranq said, then they obviously can tell who disconnected. They just need to code it in to give that person a loss.

For 2v2's and up, I think if one player drops there should be an option to not report the game if the other players decide to do so.

who cares about stats I purposly let the other player win so I just can have more Loses then wins. That way people with a good records would play me.

Well CJ I was saying that, because even valve issued a new user agreement when they released VAC and for them to ban all cheaters in VAC secured games. BTW, if you just go around punishing people and no one finds out, its not such an effective punishment. So what if some asswholes go under the radar, they will stop cheating...and thats the point. As for banning people for just being asswholes, thats just not what a game company is there for...and being an asswhole is entirely subjective also. Still as many others have stated, wouldn't this be easier to fix than go all around being big brother? Or is it just nigh impossible with how the game is setup?

  40. #40
Is there anywhere I can report someone abusing this in auto-match? I had someone dumb enough too tell me they were going to do it in chat because they were losing and ranting about how overpowered axis is.

A "report match" button would be nice. Although if each person had to have some constant contact with RO and they pulled the plug it would be evident who still had a working modem.

  42. #42
I wonder how much over-head that would take? Do you think a simple ping to RO to let it know you are "there" would be sufficient or something more complex? Honestly I plan on using a "Direct Connect" option (if they have one which I hope they will) and by-pass the whole stats thing anyway. I would much rather play with my friends than some random jerk who will just disconnect to spite me and to hide the fact he wasn't hugged enough as a child...or maybe too much.

Well I can say that 56k modem is not really supported in this game. I usually play at home on cable, but when at work I use dialup on my notebook to play.

If I have an intense game of 1v1 going with many units, the game usually ends with a dropping situation and there is no 'unplugging' going on. If you unplug a 56k dialup you lose your whole internet connection anyway, so pointless.

1v1 is the ONLY games that a dialup user can play as well, I have tried 2v2 and 3v3 and that is 100% gonna cause mass drops due to the dialup. Plus the sad fact is that it usually causes OTHER people to drop and not me, on dialup.

So before any mass actions are taken against "droppers", I would say make sure your code is what you think it is, and also reconsider the claims that this game supports dialup, because it doesnt.

P.S. Dialup users, unknowingly are causing many problems, as they can lag out people with fast connections and cause the fast player to drop if that player cannot get packets thru the dialup user.

I just don't want to see users using this to spite other players/clans because they were beaten.
