First of all, very fun game! Great job Relic! :yippee:
Is it normal for projectiles to go through structures or is it some kind of buggy clipping issue in the game? I notice bullets will go through walls and hills. :insane:

Nope, its not an bugg. If you in range you be tosted no mather what thing its in the way ^^
Sigh
It's becouse this isn't Total Annihilation, the only game I heard of were projectiles has collision detection.
That's odd, I don't recall projectiles going through hills and structures in Act of War or C&C games.
Assuming DOW2 is made projectiles wont go through hills and structures if they are using the CoH engine.
I remember reading that the problem could be fixed within the current DoW engine but it would massively slow down the game.
It's not such a big problem, only with very long range weapons it's a little odd. Like in the DoW40k mod, where the lascannons firing range was buffed. It looks a little silly when the las goes out of an civilian building.

The weapons are so powerful they blast right through buildings!
Its more a engine limitation
BUt it still looks very silly when your defiler shoots thorough a mountain.

It's got to do with the way the DoW engine works. There is a flag you can set in the mod tools which will enable collision detection for bullets, but it will make the game slow to a crawl.
Company of Heroes, Relic's upcoming game, features an improved engine that can handle proper collision detection, so you'll see bullets bouncing off armor and stuff.
I am a huge critic/admirer of this game, I have to say it looks odd to see, however it doesn't detract from the game for me at all.
Moreover I am glad the designers chose to make the game faster instead of 'fixing' such an innocuous issue.
The wise man, knowing the dangers lurking in shadows and the warp, is always vigilant, and wary.
I just wanted to make sure it wasn't some sort of bug or problem with my install.![]()
I wouldn't call it an engine limitation, so much as a PC limitation. I think its in everyone's best interest that collision detection not occur. Maybe with that essence engine, if Relic makes another DoW, we can have real LoS like on TT. But its not one of those things thats high up on my priority list.
In fact almost none currently played RTS on competitive level have bullet/projectile collision detetection - no SC, no WC3. Its because "normal" computers (not specificaly designed for hi end playing) can't handle it well.
But according to computer speed envolving ... next year "normal" computers will have more than enough power to handle such problems![]()
It must been the case in say C&C games if there was a hill or structure, it simply didn't allow you to shoot at the enemy, whereas in this game it allows you too?
It's an engine limitation because there's no real kind of optimized support for the feature. It's not a matter of PC hardware being too slow. Lots of games have very detailed collision detection, with plenty of units on the screen running around. E.g. Serious Sam.I wouldn't call it an engine limitation, so much as a PC limitation. Is the issue one of collision detection or detection AND termination. It would seem to me to detect the collision since damage is then applied, but it doesn't stop at the target. See where I'm comin from?Originally Posted by vjghost
Fair enough, I'm just saying that no one has a PC with the capabilities to do it. I doubt the homeworld engine was ever intended to it, they just threw it in there for fun. Never played Act of War but in c&c games it isn't very noticeable. Remeber the artillery tank in tiberian sun before the expansion? Man that was nice, not.Originally Posted by escapedturkey

Isn't there any1 like me who is actually happy that bullets can travel through hills. LOL, as silly as it looks, we all enjoy putting an artillery unit or a long range unit behind a hill so we can take a few shots at the enemy HQ and make the enemy go bananas.![]()
I've never seen projectiles go through a hill in another game. Perhaps other games have 'real hills' and this one does not? I would think they simply would just not allow you to fire at a enemy though a hill or structure, simple enough. The game is very fun, but the fact you can shoot at anyone through any structure (so it appears) kinda negates any point of defensive strategies. I'm surprised it hasn't been brought up via many game reviews.

I remember in C&C Generals rather than going through hills projectiles would take very peculiar paths to avoid the collision - eg tank shells making 90 degree turns and soforth.
If I recall right with Generals, if A was trying to shoot B and there was a hill between them, they couldn't fire at each other. Is that not right?

It has been some time since I played, you could be right - I know that the 90 degree turns happened with tanks on a cliff firing at tanks on the ground.
I thought this topic would be about ranged units missing the broad side of an HQ. Which is kind of silly/funny. I'd only expect that out of broken squads!
I think some tanks had missiles that could heat seek, etc. I'm pretty sure in the C&C games you can't shoot at something if there is an obstruction. I didn't notice this in the demo, but after mission 3 of the retail, it's a bit annoying.
Earth 2150 was one of the first 3D RTS' and had a good projectile collusion detection. Even with a bad comp it was running well. Either the engine was programmed so damn good that a normal computer (in that time) could handle the good grafic (in that time) with ease so that the only hardware sucking thing was the collusion detection or that issue doesn't really have to be a problem at all if done right.
...
It is definately an engine limitation. American Conquest is definately looking old now, but it has full collisision detection, friendly fire etc...with a unit limit of 16 000 (yes, per player). So the computer capcity to have a few hundred units shoot each other without violating the laws of physics certainly exists. On the other hand AC does look ugly compared to DoW; maybe Relic prioritised graphics instead of engine? Such a shame practically no games have both.
Wow. I guess this bothers a lot of people.
Not to be a jerk, but who cares? It doesn't really bother me all that much...

Wait what does this have to do with homeworld?
It matters to a point. If you think your troops are safe behind hills or structures, they aren't.
Just last night I watched in awe as a 57mm round from my ATG bounced helplessly off the armor of a German assault gun. Simply amazing to watch.Originally Posted by Moe
Once you see something like that, it's hard to look the other way when other games have no projectile collision detection. The bar has indeed been raised. Kudos to Relic.
Oh, then watching an Earthshaker round bouncing off the Farseer's breast will be truly amazing experience in DoW 2! Hail Relic!
but SM weapons are 75 caliber... at least in the codex it says
Any video or screenshot of these stuff?Originally Posted by Fumarole

Sm bolters dig into the enemies flesh then explode.
They pierce light armour.
I dont see a Problem, i mean, a Lascannon for example would make a hole in the building, hill wathever, for Example.
Oh come a Super Laser gun that can vaporize the armor of a Tank in the 40 Milenium should blow up a Hill.
You know metals are often quite easier to melt than keramic materials such as stone and glass.
