Alarm Known Causes of Poor Network Peformance - Updated 4/14/2009

    RED = NEW
    BLUE = UPDATED

Net Limiter - Any version. This bandwidth shaping application interferes with Network connectivity. Uninstall Net Limiter or try these steps.

Nod32 Antivirus - Unknown Version (most recent?). This antivirus application is proven to interfere with CoH. Looking for configuration settings that may help. [update]Phonic has some configuration ideas.

Windows Anti-Spyware Beta - Reportedly shutting this down lessens interference with CoH.

Windows Defender - Reportedly disabling this (might just need to be properly configured) will help you get into games.

Content Protect - App that protects children from getting into questionable websites was causing problems.

DNS Servers improperly set. Setting your DNS servers to a local device (router, etc), something other than your ISP's DNS server can cause problems/failure to log into CoH.

Sunrocket VOIP Can cause connection errors. See this thread for more info

Spkrmon apparently causes network connectivity issues

McAfee Antivirus causing issues. Particularly the privacy stuff.

Internet Download Manager reportedly causes network issues (probably has a bandwidth shaping component to it).

Problems with TCP/IP stack - Look for LSP errors in the hijack this log file.

There is now at least one person confirming that their VPN Client causes connection quality problems when playing.

Netgear routers - port triggering possible work around.

Norton needs additional configuration, needs to be added to the threats exclusion list.

cFosSpeed - another bandwidth shaper like Net Limiter causes problems - info on how this program works here

Zone Alarm Security Suite causing issues - Note was an older version (exact unknown).

MS Sql Server 2k5 Express has shown to interfere.

Dlink Router Issue - Some NatP configuration help

Nvidia Network Access Manager - Can cause problems logging in to RelicOnline.

    Alert Troubleshooting connection problems

    Troubleshooting connection problems with WinStun

With increasingly large numbers of different network devices used by game players it is impossible to test all possible combinations of equipment. When two clients are located behind firewalls, routers or any other type of network device implementing NAT (Network Address Translation) they cannot connect directly. In order to facilitate such connections most game applications use different NAT traversal solutions.

In many cases connectivity depends on the type of NAT implemented by a network device and it configuration. WinStun is one of the tools you can use in order to obtain extended information about your network device. You should run it on the same machine where the game is installed. You can download the WinStun client here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=102146

When you launch WinStun it should look like this: (please see attached image - WinStun-screenshot.JPG)

Click the “Run Test” button, copy the results displayed in the output window and attach it to your post when you have connectivity problems. Even if this information does not make much sense for you it may be very helpful to developers who are trying to investigate connectivity problems.

Update: If you get the message "Could not reach the stun server - check server name is correct" , put "stunserver.org" in "Stun Server".

Include a warnings.log and Hijack this log file as well please. If possible, one from each player involved will be helpful.

Router make and model is also helpful when posting. Note that Netgear routers, some BT Home Hubs and Zyxel hardware have issues with CoH. One of the best troubleshooting steps you can do is remove the Router, and connect directly to your cable/adsl "modem" and see if the problem resolves itself.

    Thanks!

    Update:

The only inbound port you need to forward is 6112 UDP. You also need to ensure that your system is not blocking outbound connections on 6112 UDP and on 30260 UDP (not 30275, the readme.txt is incorrect).

6112 UDP is used to connect people to each other when starting a game, 30260 UDP is used by your PC when it attempts to connect to Relic online.

(This info curtesy of Relic Online Programmers)

    Update: Possible Fix for Connectivity

    Hello everyone -

When playing Company of Heroes, please ensure that your system is not blocking outbound connections on 6112 and on 30260. The readme.txt makes reference to 30275 but that number is incorrect.

    30260 - good

    30275 - bad

    Thanks,

    The Relic Team

Here's what Relic has told me about the networking, and what I've picked up over the months Troubleshooting this.

Obviously, CoH is a Peer to Peer game, not Client server. In Peer to Peer games, all the players in the game need to be able to connect to each other. Relic Online is a matchmaking system, and only acts as a broker. Once in game, connection problems to Relic online should not cause disconnections to the game.

IF you can connect to Relic online without doing any port forwarding, then port 30260 UDP does not need to have anything done with it. COH makes an OUTBOUND connection to the Relic Online Servers through port 30260 UDP. If your system is somehow blocking that port OUTBOUND then you'll never connect. It's also my understanding that the servers will be connecting to the game clients during game to ensure the "online players count" is accurate and up to date.

When connecting to games, 6112 UDP is required to be forwarded/unblocked. If you can't connect to any games, 6112 is likely not being forwarded correctly or something else is blocking it.

If you can connect and play 1v1 games, but not 2v2 games, then it's likely going to be something else thinking you shouldn't be getting multiple connections on port 6112 and thus shutting down subsequent connection attempts.

Several people have reported that RelicCoH.exe attempts to use several other ports as well, however, I've been assured by Relic that these are NOT used by the games, and are likely remnants of Quazal's network SDK. IE: Features that aren't hooked up yet or needed by RelicCoH.

In summary, 30260 UDP is for connecting to the Online Matchmaking service.

6112 UDP is for connections between players for games.

If you can't connect to Relic Online at all, then 30260 is being blocked OUTBOUND or your PC can't see the server for some reason.

If you can't connect to games, then something is interferring with your connection to the other players on port 6112 UDP.

You can also try SynisterJon's guide.

www.portforward.com has great help on how to forward your router's ports.

Recently, we've been using lspfix to identify Layered Service Provider level problems.

If you download and run LSPFIX.exe from the page linked above, you should see a window with a list of LSP files installed on your system. You can post a screenshot of the LSPfix program, or simply type in a list of the LSP entries you find. We can use that information to help identify any problems.

    Ping/Tracert to the server

Do a tracert / ping to the quazal-server to make sure you're trying to connect to the correct one:

open your command prompt (Start > run > type: "cmd") and type:
(on Vista type "cmd" in the search in the "start"-menu)

    PING reliclive.quazal.net

    TRACERT reliclive.quazal.net

If you want to create a file for others to check:

    PING reliclive.quazal.net > C:\ping.txt

    TRACERT reliclive.quazal.net > C:\tracert.txt

So, you will find the tracert.txt-file on c:\ , now you can attach or copy&paste into to a post.

Note: If "ping" works correct, it will always timeout, its just to check if you're pinging to the correct server/IP. Tracing will show the connection to the server!

If something is messed up, that might be some change in the "host"-file.
This Host-file you find in "c:/Windows/system32/drivers/etc/" , there shouldnt be an entry in it concerning Quazal.
