    [Americans] Chambois - Mission 15

    Chambois

On August 19th the Allies have almost completely encircled the German 7th Army. With the Canadians and Polish divisions closing in from the north, Able company has a chance to tighten the noose around the Axis divisions at Chambois.

the hour time mark here; is that the mission's length?

I'm guessing the hour mark is a sort of limit. I never captured all the bridges, just took the southernmost bridge first, sent a sniper in camoflauge on the bridge and sniped the AT gun on the far side, then captured the bridge, then detonated it.

Captured the next bridge to the north, and fortified it. Axis kept rolling convoys to my position. Had my M10 and an engineer group flanked out to the west side of the road (you can take position between 2 buildings to protect your side armor) and a Sherman sitting near the bridge itself. Also had an AT gun sitting on the hill behind the Sherman for extra firepower. Use paras/inf to cover the bridge and protect shermans flanks, and you're good to go.

Still, though...didn't get the medal. I forgot what you have to do to gain it.

I was 4 off the medal, 4! The last German tank wandered into my AT guns before some other German forces got killed in another part of the map.

There seems to be no problem taking your time on this map. It is rather a skirmish-game with your allies being at the top, although they are mainly ineffective, since they never got anywhere near tanks when I was playing.

If you want to finish and clean up the right hand side quickly, if you take the Air tree, you can drop paratroopers in the north, and AT guns, to easily take the bridges. Later enemy forces easily destroy small amounts of AT guns however.

It also doesn't seem to matter at all, apart from some lost kills, if you actually stop any German forces getting over the bridges. The primary objective to take the area between you and your ally can be achieved without taking more then one bridge point too.

Also, if you really want to save manpower, your ally loves to put posts on the fuel and ammo points you capture.

I will have to go back and try this on Insane, and post a proper walkthrough for taking the entire map. The German forces are sporadic and the German base doesn't provide much resistance apart from Stormtroopers.

The easiest way to achieve the medal objectives is to setup killzones for the convoys and just kill them over and over. As long as you don't link up with the Canadians too soon, you are free to rack up as many kills as time permits.

There are four bridges across the river. Do not capture all four yet because the Canadians might link up with you on their own. Instead, you can clear out any mines so that you can cap them quickly once you are ready to take on the counterattack.

I set up two "killzones" for the convoys. First, you should secure the fork in the road that leads to the middle two indestructable bridges. Secure this area as quickly as possible. Use your snipers to take out two german AT guns on the way and place them just west of the road so you can use the houses to cover their flanks. Have them facing northeast to get clear shots at the convoy's flank as they turn at the fork. I also leave a crocodile there to protect the guns from infantry as well as to soak up the hits from the axis armor, otherwise the enemy tanks will target your guns. I prefer the croc since that area gets pretty hot and anything weaker will get destroyed. Nevertheless you will sometimes lose an AT crew so keep some infantry standing by to take over.

I will also position the M10 just south of the fork so it can get clear shots at their flanks as they turn left to the bridge. If set up correctly, you should have 2 AT guns and an M10 with overlapping fields of fire right at the fork in the road. Position a sherman just east down the road by the bridge to pick off any stragglers as well as protecting your flank from infantry.

Take the Airborne talents so you can airdrop infantry and two AT-guns by the Canadian base. Use them to setup an ambush for convoys as they cross the north bridge. Be sure to at least cap this particular bridge since it may get destroyed from the crossfire.

Using this strat I was able to meet my medal conditions with 20 minutes to spare. Use the extra time to reinforce the killzones and then cap the final bridge and link up with the Canadians. This will trigger the counterattack. You can use the same killzones but try to add another tank to help out and stay under the population cap in case you need to airdrop more men.

I'm at this mission now and my ally seems to think it's amusing to fill my base with shermans sitting idle, instead of helping me. Is there any way to prevent this, why is the ai doing this in the first place?

To prevent it, I guess you could tank trap your base in...although that limits the reinforcements you can deploy.

I never minded when my ally did this, it freed me up to go and send all of my armor into attack mode. I lost count of how many times my base would be defended by only infantry and in would roll a Stug or 2. With the allies armor sitting in your base, you're well protected.

Also, you can find out which bridge they came over and demo it with your engineers.

Well a panther desided it was fun to attack my base instead of going for a bridge, all the allied shermans inside my base 2 feet away did absolutely nothing so there goes that argument. Why is the ally so incredibly stupid in that mission?

Ugh...I don't know then. I've never had my ally do that and not defend my base. That would suck!

yeah, that happened to me too, quite a bit of my base was destroyed while a bunch of allied troops sit o their asses nearby idly waiting for the panther to turn on them (which it did, hyuck hyuck)

I found this mission very easy, I was surprised....thought it would be hard. First thing I did was blow up the bridges. There is one that can't be blown. Use the airstrike against convoys when they pause on the bridge. Make lots of AT guns. Make inf to take AT's that have lost their crews. Use the halftrack against massed inf. Cap all resources as you pass them.
To get the medal you must hunt down isolated troops after the convoys have been stopped. I made a pack of M8's and had them run around killing everythng in sight.

My first time round I played tactically making use of combined arms to slowly capture the map, but didn't meet the medal requirements.

My second time round I just followed what allies players eventually do in multiplayer. That is, I went armoured company, built 5 Shermans, researched the 76mm, and ran all over the map obliterating anything in my path. If a convoy approached I dragged the Shermans off fortification clearance duty to take out the convoy, then returned to the rampage.

If a Sherman hit a mine I would use crew repair to repair the damage, saving time and the need for engineers to come over.

To capture points I used the starting jeep and half track. (raid)

I had some difficulty with this mission, as German Tanks would attack my Base, and my ally would cap all the points before I got the 300 kills, but I placed Tank traps, set up kill zones and Barb wire the last point so allys dont cap it.

  15. #15
i like going air cause you can use the recon plane and more easily attack convoys w/ the p47s. blow as many bridges as possible and create chokepoints

  16. #16
Wow, this was a bot of a let down.

On hard (latest patch), all I really did was take the two pop and ammo resources naxt to my base, took the 1st bridge and the point directly north, and then built up my tank forces, within the first 10 minutes, the Canadians had linked up with me. I rann all of my forces on the far side of the bridge and sat there for ten minutes, killed a few tanks, saw a few were leaking through up top. Moved up blew a few more tanks up - game finished! Less than half an hour!

Easiest mission by far. The Canadians even took the liberty of building a few MG nests outside of my base, so I didnt even need to defend that. All I need now is a Canadian house slave to put the kettle on, and I am sorted. Perhaps they can go to work for me tomorrow too.

    Good game though!

would blowing 2 out of 3 bridges be a good idea and then just making a massive kill zone on the third bridge get u the medal and an easy victory? just wondering...

    if it were that easy

Why don't you just let the Axis re-open the gap after the Armor comes, you can destroy the armor and milk the Axis convoys without worrying about the hour time-limit.

  20. #20
    Normal level.
Number bridges from bottom to top as #1-5.

To get fuel supply from the two fuel points, bridge #1 must be taken.
Set tank trap line on left side of the river between bridge #1 and #2, so that enemy convey cannot move from bridge #2 to bridge #1.
Also set tank trap line to block HQ’s NW gate, build machine gun nests to guard the base.

Attack bridge #2 from right side of the river, after control bridge #2, move sniper to the left side of the bridge, then move AT slowly forward to destroy the bunk and enemy tanks near by.

Attack bridge #3 from right side of the river, then control bridge #4 too. Move 2 AT between bridge #3 and #4, so they can cover both bridges.

There is one enemy tank entry at upper part of north-eastern board, get at least two tanks, two AT and some engineers before explore this area.
Set tank trap line at middle of north-eastern board, near the strategy point so that enemy tanks can not move in behind my line from here.

When it is possible, take all points at right side of the river.

I tried many times to capture the four bridges, link to Canada base, AND kill 300 enemy in one hour.
Later, by accident I realized all we need to do is to capture the four bridges and link to Canada base in one hour. Enemy killed in later counter-attack is also counted for medal.

Be careful on following enemy units on the left side of the river:
    Between bridge #1 and #2, a sniper,
    Between bridge #3 and #4, a mortar
At strategy point near bridge #4, mortar and machine gun.

Prepare for the counter-attack, once bridge #3 and #4 are under control, set tank trap line at bridge #2.
Destroy bridge #4 and #5 ASAP. Once counter-attack started, destroy bridge #1(just in case). Most enemy tanks will attack bridge #3. It is not very difficult to defense two bridges.

    Hope this is helpful.

I'm not sure why I keep getting mission failed.

I secured all four bridges and got the confirmation that the secondary objective was achieved and then took the strategic point at the northen base but it says I haven't secured Chambois. What am I doing wrong?

Do the bridges need to be operational?

    Hi
You have probably worked it out now, but securing the 4 bridges is a secondary objective. The reason you are getting 'mission failed' is because you have not 'closed the pocket', that is there is not a link between you and your allies. If you fail to acheive this in the hour you fail. In some games your allies do most of this work and you join up quickly but in others they sit on their arses and do nothing and it is down to you. Best bet I have found is to work your way towards them on the right of the river and hopefully they help a bit.

You have to be careful linking your territory to your allies too quickly. If you want to reach the medal objective of killing something like 200-300 germans, you have to delay that linkup until you're well along the way to reaching the medal objective.

I completed it yesterday. For some reason I never had the problem of linking up too soon and getting the medal was straight forward once I got a plan of action in place. As soon as I start the mission I upgrade the supply yard fully. Thats a priority. Then I secure the 2 fuel points to the east and 2 munitions points just north. This gets me on the way nicely and then I send out a halftrack with an engineer and infantry squad with a sherman north with the aim of blowing the bridge and blocking the one below it.

Then the secret is to keep armour and AT guns in good supply and keep them primed to move to where each convoy comes. I had about 260 kills with 26 minutes to go when the convoys stopped even though I had not linked up. Destroying the enemy base and linking up gave me the medal and the counter attack was no match to about 6 AT guns and 4 tanks waiting at the bridge. A few mines on it helped too!

Liked the ending. War is insane.

Wow. Finally finished this mission yesteday. Did it using almost nothing but armor. I had 3 Shermans, (lost the Crocodile somehow, don't know) 1 Calliope, a Pershing, Wolverine, a quad half track and greyhound. For infantry I used the one they supplied me at the beginning and two engineer squads. First thing I did was put the engineers to build tank traps at the sourthern bridge and then mine the road in front. Then I did both upgrades to the supply yard.
Placed the Wolverine and Croc at the road junction northwest of the base to blast the convoys. As soon as my engineers build the tank traps the convoys stopped coming that way and started going to the second bridge. I placed the Wolverine right in front of the bridge and she did nicely blasting all the convoys as they came along. Hit some mines but it only took like 1/3 of the health so I left her there where she blasted the bunkers and MG nests in the meantime.
As soon as I had the resources and command points I started upgrading my armor and chosing the tech tree that would allow for the Pershing first. I sent my greyhoud to raid and capture resource and strategic points since the first time I was not very agressive and the mission ended with the PC pwning me with Tigers and Stu 42s. Explosions from those shells are pretty impressive!!!!!
Whenever the Canadians would reveal a portion of the map up top I would send in the fighter/bomber to hit their tank production facilities. This definitely helped a lot in the long run.
Capped the first and second bridges and placed lots of mines in front of them. This would turn out to be a great equalizer later by fluke rather than design.
I placed my Shermans and Wolverine up by the roads leading to the third bridge where they made short work of any convoy that happened to come up. I had the two snipers from this mission prowling around the strategic and resource points since it was an easy way to rack up kills to get the secondary medal.
As soon as I had the Pershing I moved her up to the third bridge and had the engineers block it with tank traps and mine it. Shortly afterward I got the command points for the Calliope and immediately put it to work bombarding the German base each time the barrage was recharged. This combined with the greyhound capturing and guarding points along with the snipers let me get about 230 kills with 25mins remaining. The Canadian engineers had started to show up at this point and repairing my tanks along with my own engineers so I moved my armor along the road leading to the fourth bridge and with 3 shermans, a Wolverine and a Pershing blasting away I reached the 300 mark in short order.
I then proceeded to move all the armor towards the Axis base and level it. Then took the Greyhound and the Pershing across the 5th bridge and linked up my points. Used a bombing run to softed up and then the Pershing to finish off the tanks that showed up near the Canadian base.
For the counterattack it went pretty easy. Use the bomber to hit the tanks and placed the Pershing and Wolverine across the fourth bridge and easily finished these off.
A stroke of luck helped stop the two Tigers that were coming across the third bridge. The lead Tiger hit some mines and suffered a damanged engine. Being so close to the bridge it slowed down as well as the Tiger behind it. Hit it with a bombing run destroying one Tiger damaging the other so bad that the Wolverine only needed 2 shots to destroy it.
