It's only been out for a couple of days, that's hardly long enough to declare it the best RTS ever.
Exactly, its like 2nd best ever, and once everyone plays it and beats it, then it can be call the best EVER! Gotta ease into it, lol...It's only been out for a couple of days, that's hardly long enough to declare it the best RTS ever.
Nah man, I decided during the beta that this is DEFINATELY the best RTS ever!![]()
It's good. I'd put it tied with Starcraft, Total Annihilation, and Rise of Nations for best ever RTS. All very different games, each one doing what it does very very well.
Steam / BC2: Eleanor Lamb
B.Net 2.0: EleanorLamb
Total Annihilation wins for the gameplay concept, but with graphics, sound and squad AI being definately much better in Company of Heroes. But comparing a game from like 6 years ago to one that is yet to be released (in Europe atleast =p) is a bit awkward. Supreme Commander however... *shivers*
In conclusion: I will buy both CoH and SupCom the moment they're released, rawr.
C&C Red Alert is my favourite RTS at the moment. Though I still think CoH will be my favourite RTS of the last few years. I have tried out several demo's of RTS's but one of my biggest problems with them is that so many have akward control bar options (IMO). e.g.
In CoH, if you want to build some riflemen, its easy to see which symbol represents them and even has a pop up message to let you know. Whereas some other RTS's have icons which have given me no clue as to what they do.
WiC may beat this. Supreme Commander will almost 100% beat it, and EA killed command and conquer so I doubt C&C3 will beat it... Oh then dont forget warhammer mark of chaos...

It's definitely a top tier RTS, but I don't think it's in the running for best ever until we get some patches and perhaps an expansion pack.
Remember: you're a blogger. Pretense is your co-pilot.
Second best. Nothing has ever been able to beat Age Of Empires 2 so far.
This isn't only a my favorite rts but favorite game by far. And im saying that just having played the demo... when I get the full copy il love the game even more. I hate playing vs the comp in any game but ive played vs the ai in the demo since it came outOnly bad thing for relic is that they will have to work realy hard to make something better than coh in the future :P
]
hmmm I would say dont count your chickens until their hatch but I am all in all agreed that COH is one of the best RTS out there not the very best but one of the best.
Connection problems in Playtest beta click here for what to do

Ya AoE 2 was great. Its to bad that AoE 3 is so crappy. "Look lawl we got physics!", "Wheres the gameplay?", "Look a house is exploding!"
CoH does seem to me to be the best RTS ever. I've been playing the hell outta that game since I got it at Best Buy the other day, and before that I was playing the hell outta the demo. It's just got amazing graphics, gameplay, sound...I can't realyl find anything to complain about really.
age 3 is definatly not crappy, it requires aggressive playstyle iwth the shipment thingy. i think the age games, starcraft and red alert are pretty big competitors. I never played total annihilation. But if you compare it to today's rts games, coh owns em all.
It also depends on what you like ofcourse. If you want more economics in a game, and more building things up and all that you wouldnt like coh.
To me, Company of Heroes IS the best RTS game I have played to date.
Simply put, I've been waiting for this game's features since I played my first RTS back in 1995.
Thank you Relic!
Warcraft 3 is my all-time favorite. Starcraft would come in second. CoH is good but it's far too new.
I have been around RTS games since Armor Alley (all you youngins out there prob don't know about that title)...
Agreed, I would say that CoH is one of the top 10 best RTS games of all time... I think even one of the best ever... It does need some attention like more multiplayer modes like (no armor and no doctrines modes) and of course grand expansions.... British vs German in Afrika...
US vs Italy/Germany in Italy...
Russia vs Germany/Strmkrgr in Russia...
US Marines vs Japanese...
Yes... best game of all time... If Relic made expansions and covered the WHOLE gamut of the war... I might... might just cry thinking how awesome this game really is and will be!

Yeah very good call on the expansions.Originally Posted by prowlinger
I've also been playing RTS since early 90's but have never been too into historical rts's. The only reason I say WC3 is my best-ever is because I haven't stopped playing it since its release date. From what I've played of COH, I can only hope to still be playing multiplayer in 4+ years but that will likely require expansions to keep fresh.
This game is absolutely wonderful , its so addictive , I am at it all the time an I only have the demo , the skirmish ai mode is JUST WOW !!!
This IS the Best strat Rts Ever...Fact !!
I've only ever played the skimish on the demo and I love it. I feel in love just in the tutorialit is the best RTS, EVER! If they bring on the expansions with other nations, it will go down in the history books as being the most succesful RTS ever.
I've played a few RTS', starting with the original C&C, and the one thing that annoyed me in other games, but makes CoH stand above the crowd, is that the 'Watershed' moment, the point where you've realised that you are certain to win, is so far near the end of the battle it's nigh on perfect. In other RTS' it happens much earlier and it just turns it into a drag.
CoH, I love!
the skirmish mode AI is like a real person ..just Superb
Yep and what I love is the moments in skimish where you think it's gone all quiet like in other RTS. This normally means the AI is winding down and your gonna win. However, most times with me, it means the AI is unable to get across my heavly defended crossings so just doesn't bother. But once I make a whole in said defences, the AI wakes up and rushes to attack. But not just that one point, several points at once. You realise that you thought you were about to win but then get battered 'cause you woke the sleeping dragon.
My opinion is that total annihilation was hands down the best RTS, hands down. It did things following games didnt even try to match for years. CoH has the potential to be in that caliber, but we need to see if it has the longevity of play.
I've never played Total Annihilation... but it does seem impressive that people still talk about it despite the fact that it was originally released in, what, 1997??Originally Posted by Grimmtooth
Ah, you definately missed out. TA was incredible. Just wait till Supreme Commander comes out, hopefully it will be as good.Originally Posted by karmatic
Edit:
Yes, '97.
TA was a very good game, definitely in all time top 5. What was wrong with it is exactly what I fear about Supreme Commander, the robotic, no identity approach to the units. The reason I loved other games over TA was that, I got attached to particular units as they had a kinda personality, idle animations or unit responses etc., where TA's units had none.
That's one of the really important ways that COH is better than TA. But I cannot for the life of me understand why the game forces you to play race X vs Y, what's wrong with X vs X or Y vs Y? What the hell kinda system is that, it's so dumb to shoot themselves in the foot like that!!
*Edit* I wonder what will happen in a month or two when the initial excitement wears off and people start to come upon the forced race X vs Y limit. I hope that feature can be patced out, or else, watch out!!!!!

The wise man, knowing the dangers lurking in shadows and the warp, is always vigilant, and wary.
The potential is certainly there.
In terms of graphics, animations, sound, environment...all head and shoulders above previous RTS titles. We'll have to see how the balance and playstyle shifts as more and more people begin to play.
The X vs. Y aspect is probably my first major complaint. This is an issue that deserves its own thread imoOriginally Posted by juiceman1_2000
Because the Axis fighting with the allies is too much of a context conflict I think. Some people might not mind any and all sense of the context of WWII thrown out, but a lot would and that includes me.
It's not the campaign though... it's multiplayer! Rules get thrown out the door in the context of 1v1'ing somebody online imo
I have played most of the games mentioned in this thread, and not to sound like a fan boi or anything, but Dawn of War is probably the best RTS I've ever played except for CoH. I've been playing CoH for about a month in beta. Amazingly awesome game
Before CoH the Homeworld series were the best RTS's EVER!!! Now they are at even match with CoH but CoH is better. DoW i put down right at the bottom... It sucked ass.
COH draws a lot of its gameplay style and method from DOW. I love DOW and COH.![]()
Yeah I don't know what you are smoking, DOW is an incredible game. Noy many RTS's are considered worthy of 2 expansions. Only the best ones.
Not even close.
CC, Warcraft 2, Starcraft, TA, AoE2.
CoH is a great game, but nowhere near the magic of the above games when they were first relased.
Thank you captain obvious. Makes no sense comparing the graphics of a 2006 game and a game from the mid to early 90's.In terms of graphics, animations, sound, environment...all head and shoulders above previous RTS titles.
I think Total Annihilation still wins right now. It has a lot more variety (land, sea, air battles), the graphics were extraordinary for its time (pretty good even by today's RTS standards), and the gameplay is incredible. The single-player campaign is also really difficult and fun.
Without having played CoH (will wait till full release) I would have to say that my 10 favourite RTS games would be:
TA
Warcraft 3
C&C Generals (don't laugh, if you install the Second Wave mod, which adds the UKs units ..........awesome)
Starcraft
DoW
Rome Total War
Rise of Nations
AoM
Homeworld
Cannon Fodder
òÓ
Total Annihilation = best ever
I've played a plethora of RTS games in the last dozen years. To me, CoH ranks up among the top titles, along with Empire Earth and Dawn of War.
Supreme Commander may or may not take the crown. We're all crossing our fingers they do it right...
