    How to counter AT guns?

    Dear all,

I usually play as the Axis side. The Allied's AT guns always give me lots of trouble.

A tank cost 4 (stug) to 8 (panzer 4) or 12 (pather) population while AT guns cost much less.

A single AT guns can kill Stug easily even in a face to face battle (not to mention ambushed from rare). 2-3 can even kill a tiger very fast.

Could you give me some suggestion on how to counter AT guns? And against the computer, I can win in Hard mode, but not expert mode. In expert mode, the Allied uses AT guns with Thomsons and sometimes tanks. I just can't killed AT guns effectively. Thomson prevents normal soilders to get close to AT guns. So may be I should try to use more sniper and motors?

With infantry? Just a wild thought there.

Snipers and mortars are excellent counters for AT guns. Personally I use stormtroopers with assault ability or bundled grenade to kill them. Any infantry will easily kill the AT guns. Its just a matter of micro. Mortars and snipers are good counters, just use your stugs and ostwinds and pumas to kill the enemy infantry.
If you've noticed their accuracy (scoutcars), it's almost as if the gunner has a death wish or has made a bet with Klaus over who can shoot more bullets into the ground than the enemy.

anything fast and with sufficient armour to take 2 hits.

that is if it is a one at gun vs one vehicle. ostwinds owns atguns, so does m10, or armor cars. only thing u need to care about is getting them to shoot the AT gun from behind.

or any infantry, motars works wonders.

I like using my snipers for recon and taking out gun emplacements such as AT weapons and MG as you stated. So snipers, mortars do the job just fine imo.

Thank you for all your reply

Now I have to try out motor team more ... I don't use them very offen before :moose:

After upgrading to the highest level, sniper can't make 2 shoots in a short period of time. Cool!

How about walking stuka? It's quite powerful though inaccurate and easy to get killed.

IMHO ostwinds and armor cars could killed AT guns easily if there's only one AT guns on the field. But if there are two guns, they seldom have a chance.

Remember AT guns have a very limited field of fire, if you can, flank them then circle them. Its a bit harder with StuGs but you should at least distract the AT gun long enough to get a infantry squad in to kill the crew. With grouped AT guns its better to use artillery.

Unless there is a MG behind the AT gun. Then you need arty or flanking tanks.

I've always had fun using stormtroopers on AT guns. Chuck a bundled nade to mush the crew then use the gun on their shermans. Once I even captured a 105 howwie this way.

I've had a few games as axis that were quite cose where I used mortars to defeat an allied player who had enough AT guns to create a stale mate. If all else fails try them.

AT if supported are rough, and if the enemy has actually built tank traps to limit movement options i can only feel sorry for you. if thats the case, paratroops, snipers, stormtroopers or morters are a good bet, & if they are smart AT is hard to beat.

I use cheap tanks like stug's to pull AT guns out of hiding, sending a sniper with them. I then pull the stugs off to the side so the AT guns have to manuver for a while to realign onto the stug pretty much giving the sniper time to snipe off at least 2 of the 3 member team. By this time I bring up a lil more of my tank squad and clean up any reinforcements the enemy is bringing up to defend the AT's position. I might from time to time use a ST squad instead of a sniper and then pick up the AT gun from them after I wipe their squad off it.

The trick that most Axis players use to keep their tanks alive is infantry, artillery strikes of their own (terror discipline is helpful), or simply try not to let your prize fighters (your tigers and panthers) take the heavy AV hits that your Stugs should be blowing up to.

I agree, I am sick to death of seeing those threads. They are rarely productive.

As for killing AT guns, I usually use snipers. They only need 2 clean shots to disable the AT gun (with the third member dying automatically, something which I wish would change). Mortars work well too, but if the enemy is quick enough he will withdraw his AT guns out of the range of the mortar.

Your troops have the ability to up their speed of attack without cost to defense (clock button)...if you rush an AT gun with nades they have no chance to defend against you..

propaganda. Run up send his infantry running, home, run your infantry up kill all his men and build some pioneers and then take his AT.

It really depends on the maps too, in 1 vs 1 AT with support can be a pain. Your only options in this situation is to sarafice cheap units to scout them and mortar them. This actually works most of the time, late game artillery or rockets will tear them to shreds.

In larger maps AT is a joke, sorry it is just to easy to take out, there if far too much going on too fast. If your opponents have several ATs up it's easy to find out where he is not watching you can take them out with just about any unit in the game because of flanking.

I think it's just a matter of learning how your opponent is playing and how to counter units. IMO in large games AT's are some of the softest units in the game.

On a side note, AT's are never worthless and you should always build some to suppliment your army, especially in 1 vs 1 and some 2 vs 2 maps

Most AT guns do become useless on big maps. The exception to this is the Airborne AT gun. Which, in the right hands, can inflict some pretty extensive damage.

When i am Axis and they make AT Guns. I usually like to do Vehicles rushes, so i will go Terror Tree. And in my experience players always seem to use AT Guns close to each other. So in order to keep my vehicle push working good I will use Fire Storm and because that AT guns retreat slow, the majority of the time the Fire Storm will take out all their AT's. Then you can steal them if they aren't blown to bits : ) But yeah any Infantry > AT guns, throw grenades or what ever.
