Patch Coming

  1. #351
I don't expect the map editor to be particularly accessible without previous experience, CoH maps are more complex than your average RTS, and if map design is automated too much it won't please the pro mapmakers. Anyway, we'll just wait and see how much fun the casual gamer can have with the tools .

As for the "big inclusion" if it is not the mod tools then what could it be? Sounds really promising!

I don't think the big inclusion is the mod tools. It sounds more like a core piece of the game given the way he mentioned it.

I think at some point in the next few patches, Relic should do something about tank traps and barbed wire, how when they're incomplete they still have the full effect of a completed TT/BW. Take a look at this replay that I've picked out from gamereplays.org :

http://www.gamereplays.org/community...gopid=18618122& (if that link doesn't work, then just type it in manually because that "&" sign IS actually part of the hyperlink)

I'm sure if anyone played against this guy, they would be VERY frustrated as you wouldn't be able to get ANY munitions for wire cutters. Imagine if this was a ranked match...

If by connection issues you mean not being able to connect to certain games there isn't a simple fix for this. This is endemic of peer to peer connections. Some people just can't connect to each other. We do have some cases where people should be able to connect, but aren't able, and we are trying to track some of these down. They are particularly difficult to track down though, as we need to be able to reproduce them here to be able to even start thinking about how to fix them. Many of these seem to be ISP related, so we are starting to try and open a dialog with them, but this is not simple either. We will be steadily improving the UI in the lobby so that it is much easier to tell if you can connect to a game. We also have a fix in mind that may help with some connections issues (yes, I understand that's not entirely in line with above.)

Clans will not be in this patch, but are actively being worked on as are some other oft asked for online features. We have some more performance improvements coming which won't require a patch (same with the drop bug fix), but will only need a server restart. We have an entire team of designers, programmers and UI specialists working full time on the Company of Heroes online system. These aren't people who are on short term, these people are only working on online and doing it full time. I know we have asked for patience many times in the past, but I have to ask for some more.

Forgot Buggo mentioned the mod tools...yes, it's the mod tools. Also it's documentation for the mod tools though!

    Tranj,

I get the feeling that a fix to the drop issue is not going to be included in the patch then? Can we get an ETA on it, I just got reamed for about 70 points... It makes high ladder play dangerous since we lose so so much per drop and gain so so little per win.

    Tranj,

the main problems on the 1v1 ladder right now are:

    A) Drop bug - as Bent just mentioned: Your opponent disconnects or even quits and the game counts as a loss to you.
    B) Game recorded as custom: Auto result is recorded as custom result (non auto).
    C) Custom game is recorded as auto: A custom (non auto) result recorded as auto result.

When I say auto, I mean the "PLAY NOW!" option and custom the game which you host or join as guest.

I have only played on the 1v1 ladder, so I cannot generalize what I've said for all ladders, because I have no experience with them.

Please let me know now if you want any more info.

    Thank you,
    N00bMysh

Ok, I'm glad the patch is coming out but i'm not so glad it won't fix the drop issue! That’s what 90% of top ladder players and core COH fans were waiting for! And they were hoping it was going to come out with this patch!

Just like with Bentguru I'm also a pretty high ranking player (top 10 axis at the moment). I was finally level 11 when some lvl 6 noob decided to drop when he clearly lost the match. And of course even though I had more game points + more victory points I still got a loss! This costed me my level 11 and several positions in ranking ladder. This is of course is not the first time. With this account at least 10-15 players dropped and most of them I got a loss while I was winning.

Why cant the drop issue be solved with a simple rule: "If you drop you lose". It worked fine with Warcraft 3 ladder system on Battle.net. I simply don't get why it has to be all complicated if you want to compete in the ladder just make sure you have a good stable connection, if you don't its your fault you will get a loss if you disconnect.

Anyway enough of my whining, I only have one question (I really want an answer for) when (date or estimation) is the drop issue going to be fixed?

Since it hasn't been mentioned in this post or any other spot from the devs, I doubt it's high on prio as of now.

The patch is estimated to be released within a week from now. Or so they (Buggo and Relic) claim in this very thread you, and I, are reading in atm. What parts the patch will fix isn't released yet so I would stick with Tranj's "patience" just a little while longer instead of asking for detalis and dates. No offence.

No that was not my question. Tranj said it will not include clans and it will not fix drop issue but some server restart will. Now my question is when are we to expect this server restart!

It won't fix the drop issue because it's not an issue with the client. It's a server side issue, and the fix is under way. If we do it half baked, someone else will find some way to beat it. We need to do it right. I don't have an ETA on it right now, but it's high priority. As soon as I get a solid ETA from the team and it's on the test servers for QA to hammer on, then I'll give you an estimate.

we should all get a medal for beta testing this game

not that i wanna gripe, but alot of games come out mostly unpolished. this game at least didnt reek of too much "out of the door now! schnell!" but the last 2 weeks something came out stinking.

so what happened? stat tracking is in the mess, and one cannot tell a phantom game from a new game.

I'd rather relic fixes everything proper in this first patch, would fixing the drop bug be so hard? i just hope it's not just balancing stuff in this first patch, since it'll be pointless atm.

Seems to be, the release Date of the patch will not be in October.

The damn score bug, not all online matches will be counted. Damn DC plug out issue will be fixed hopely.
    Some mor official maps.
Rest seem to be fine for a less than 40 game player like me.

Why have you deleted my post? It was making a constructive criticism. Truth hurt? Why not let Relic or THQ decide? So it's censorship now is it, Mr Fanboy moderator?

  26. #376
    Thread cleanup.

    Deleted spam, rantings etc.

Dribblesack if you read the rules you would know ranting is not allowed. It was not constructive and your disclaimer did little to persuade me otherwise. I am not covering anything up, since i would have no reason too. I am a volunteer, not on thq's or relic's payroll. If you want to post in this thread again you will abide by the rules (every single one of them).

And yes i am a fanboy... most volunteer staff are, its not like this position was available at a job fair.

I just read it's in it final stages but no dates so far. I got this from www.relicnews.com :

Just an update. This patch will address a wide variety of issues covering pretty much every area of the game — SP missions, gameplay, some art, performance issues, balance tweaks, along with some of the other things Tranj has already mentioned.

    :!:

  28. #378
Open appeal to Tranj and/or any other official representative of THQ or Relic ...

I put it to you that your lack of communication regarding the patch is creating unnecessary speculation and setting unfair expectations. Why don't you provide us with a clear roadmap of what will and won't be included with some approximate timelines? The www.relicnews.com news item from Raphael van Lierop tells us nothing of any great use and - yet again - asks us to be patient.

Here is an example of a better approach. I'm not making any comparison between the two games, merely the approach to communication. Why can't you adopt a similar approach for CoH and tell us what has been sent into QA? By all means caveat it all you like, but at least tell us what you are planning.

I'm struggling to see what the downside would be. It doesn't matter how hard the team is working and how patient you ask us to be. A little communication costs nothing and goes a long way.

Similarly, can you confirm that bugs reported on this official forum are investigated. It would appear that it took a private message from me to alert you to the major stats bug (unranked wins counting as ranked and levelling up players etc), despite there being many posts about it on the forum. I find this alarming. What is being done to fix this and will there be a stats wipe once the problems are resolved?

    Thanks in advance.

That's not an example of a better approach, that's an example of a different approach.

The downside is that people often start bitching about potential changes before they've even had a chance to try them out, and complain when some things don't make it into the final version of the patch. It's more trouble than it's worth.

Take, for example, the Dark Crusade forums here. There was an uproar of "zomg so unbalanced" after watching a video where the units had been enhanced to show them off. This despite explicit statements to ignore the balance for that very reason.

Relic/THQ most likely knew about the stats bug long before you did. Relic employees and Tranj show up in lots of threads here, which seems to indicate that they read the place pretty well.

  30. #380
I accept that it's impossible to please all of the people all of the time, but imho a communication vacuum is just a cop out.

It simply serves to raise peoples expectations and increase the sense of disappointment when those things which many regard as a higher priority have been passed over for minor fixes that we could all live without.

What 95% of players want to know can be answered in four responses ...
    - When will the arbitration (drop handling) fix be implemented?
    - When will the map editor and mod tools be released?
    - When will the stats system work (i.e. record all results correctly, be they ranked/unranked)?
    - Will there be a stats wipe?

A communications vacuum would be a cop out, yes.

    Buggo's posts: 1,239 (11.3 per day!)
    Tranj's posts: 909

These include some specifics on what will be in, reasoning behind not tweaking some units, potential for a changelog post when they get near release, more information and info that a changelog will be posted when finalized, mod tools will be included, and an update on the QA process.

And those aren't even all of their posts in this thread.

Three of your four questions have nothing to do with the patch, as they're server-side issues, and the mod tools question has already been answered in this very thread. Do us all a favour and READ IT.

  32. #382
    Thread cleanup.

Gothia you are now banned from the thread for spam, useless posting, ranting, and a continued disregard to why your posts were deleted in the first place.

  33. #383
It doesn't matter how frequently they have posted on the forum lol - its about quality rather than quantity! I'd rather have ten posts that tell us something significant than 100 that ask us to be patient and try and explain that its a complex process.

If the collection of post fragments you pulled together is the best information available, then it is a sorry affair indeed. It tells us nothing of the roadmap/plan for fixing the major bugs - be they server side or client side. Nor does it make any reference to the stats issues.

Fair cop re the mod tools but my post was asking for a list of what has been sent to QA; I accept that this might change.

Tranj has made statements in a number of threads regarding specific bugs. It's not surprising that you haven't found them, I suppose, as you seem to be jumping into threads without reading them.

I already gave an explanation of why a list of changes can be a bad idea.

    Replay system enhancements? Yes/No/Later date?

I have read every thread that I could find on the upcoming patch yet haven't seen anything about enhancing the replay system. Is this a low priority? I would love to see what resources each player has and what unit is queued up. I guess I am alone in my desires.(can i get a hooha replay system?)
Personally I don't care about mod tools or map editors. The drop bug is server side(or it was alluded to be) so it doesn't apply. Balance issues? Maybe a few tweaks, but i don't see either side with a huge winning advantage. What else is there? Stat tracking? Still server side(god, I hope it is).
So that leaves 2 bugs, the unfinished building, and the axis reinforcement thing.

Didn't mean this to turn into a rant. This game is great.

I accept that this might change.
The community recently proved that a lot of people won't accept this, when they went apeshit over alleged false advertising in a wallpaper that Relic made as a nice gesture.

    As for the rants:

Guys, we're not trying to censor you. We're not deleting every post that says something negative about the game. Hell, that would be an extremely bad move, because the developers need feedback.
What we do is remove rants, because they accomplish nothing. These forums are not here for you to blow off steam. They are discussion forums, and ranting is not a form of discussion.

You don't have to say nice things about the game in your post. What you have to do is post constructively. "omg this all sux" won't help anyone.

    Read. The. Fucking. Forum.

if you scroll back just 1 (ONE) page, you will see that Tranj said that:

It won't fix the drop issue because it's not an issue with the client. It's a server side issue, and the fix is under way. If we do it half baked, someone else will find some way to beat it. We need to do it right. I don't have an ETA on it right now, but it's high priority. As soon as I get a solid ETA from the team and it's on the test servers for QA to hammer on, then I'll give you an estimate.
And in the very same post, he even says that the mod tools will be included in the patch. That's two question answered, with just 1 (ONE) mouse-click.

I have not been able to find an answer on these forums to your third question, about the stats system fix, but I presume, that it will either be fixed in the patch or in the fix Tranj is mentioning. If it hasn't be fixed by then, feel free to complain. But until then, shut your cogs and listen.

The stats wipe? Yet to be decided/considered, as far as I can tell from these forums (the small bit of them that I read).

If all my answers are useless, and you just want specific dates, then please, they've said they're working their sorry asses to get this through, live with what you've already gotten.

One thing though, would be nice if Relic could take all the announcements, that have been made so far, and put them in the OP post, makes it more accessible for the average Joe.

  38. #388
Your post proves my point Dronten, your comments about the stats issue and stats wipe are speculation in the absence of any official statement. Incidentally, I'm not sure that your first comment conforms to the forum rules

I do read the forums. My overriding point is that fragments and snippets of 'it's high priority', 'it's hard', 'it takes a long time', 'we are working on it' does not constitute any meaningful communication of information. All I am looking for is a clear statement in one place (on that, we agree) which explains what fixes/enhancements are in the pipeline and when (approximately) we can expect them.

A detailed explanation of what will be included in the forthcoming patch would be a good start. But clearly, the story goes further than that. So what else is being worked on? What will follow the patch? Let the communication flowwwww.

    Just one Idea:

In such as long posts as this one, a good idea is editing the first post including on it all important information collected from replies (informaton being posted by relic people)

That way people have not to read the 387 (and growing) replies.

That would keep all the information we have about the patch just in one place. I am sure some of the moderators could do this... (if it is not a lot of time)

I work as software developer so I understand perfectly the QA procedure and can bet a hand that we will have a better final result after the wait thanks to this working procedure.

On the other hand I also understand players, we are "losing punch" in playing this game because we know things are gonna change but we don't know when or which ones. Also stats are no longer working so you cannot spend the time improving your rank ... you have to play with "rubbish" profiles to avoid your "good profile" to be pwned. Any small piece of information is very important to keep the "punch" on playing for current players.

Both parts please be comprensive and patient

We punish the few around here and not the majority silent or otherwise... what you may see as attacks on the whole, we are actually picking apart those who do not follow the rules. You do not see deleted posts or warnings that we hand out, unless we publically announce them using the offender as an example to others.

Don't worry about it Gsurge, the mods have been through worse .

As for disclosing information, I have to agree with what's been said about early disclosure of fixes that may or may not make it to the final patch. No matter what disclaimers are made, it's now almost a given that people will not read any of them and would still be asking why so and so fix did not make to the patch. While I know that there are some people frustrated with this method, and to be honest I'm rather miffed as well, there's no stopping the concern that people may be mislead about what's being fixed.

That's the TLDR version, this is the short version:
The internets make people stupid, and the mentioned method may or may not work.
