Hey people! As You can see, I'm new to this whole page. It's kinda kool and you all like Homeworld so that's kool. So let me start by introducing myself. My name's Quinton Jones (Q for short)
and I'm in the 12th grade. I'm currently working on an ultimately 2 book novel and am soon going to be in the army I've played the homeworld game a few years back and it was just amazing. I dont have it myself because my comeputer is too slow ( 700 mhz<) and it just sucks (its a gateway with a samsung CPU. Samsung!!!!!). well, I appreciate the feedback and I hope to make alot of friends (of at least aquaintances) Thanx!!!

My comp almost crashed when I tried to install Unreal Tournament The thing is a piece o' crap cuz of that stupid Samsung CPU. You are right they don't make comps; They just screw others over. Evert thing in that tower is made from subcontracted companies, samsung, mitsubishi, and even Saab, making the whole thing SUCK!!!!

Replace the parts or just get a whole new computer. Build your own. A decent comp made from scratch can go for as less as a thousand dollars. Maybe even less. Im not the authority on this tho. There are plenty of others here who can tell you what to get and how to put everything together.

My computer's a Gateway, and probably a good deal slower than yours (PIII 450 in da house!), but it runs Homeworld just fine, and a bunch of other games too, with very little slowdown (except when I've got 200+ ships on the screen at once . . . in my fleet alone). The computer does occasionally lock up, but that's more of an annoyance than anything.

HW and Cat run good on my system even with the pci slot vid card. Slows down with more than 4 players online and loads of ships. Have played other games on it and they ran fine. Half Live and all it's other game. Diablo 1 & 2 and worked good.

I use Verizon DSL, so I can download up to 768 Kb/s. You don't need nearly that much, though, 56k with any decent provider (not *shudder* AOL) should be plenty.

Until recently I played Homeworld easily with a 150Mhz Pentium Elite with no known graphics capability and 56k modem. If I was you I wouldn't say nearly that much about yourself (unless your lying), I still haven't told anyone anything. I might be a sycopath locked away in a institution for all they know I'm betting at least one of them is. I currently have a 500Mhz Pentium III with DSL and a graphics card, so much better.

I used to run HW on my dad's 300Mhz celeron with a 4Mb AGP S3 vid card, and a 56k modem, worked fine, lagged a bit with MP though. Then i built myself a 800Mhz Celeron (currently running at 900) with a 32Mb 4x AGP Nvidia card, 17' monitor, 128-bit Sound Blaster sound card, 20GB HD 52X cd rom, whole thing costed bout $850 CDN. HW runs awsome. And I'm getting a cable modem tonight, how sweet it is.

I forgot to metion that was back late july, prices have changed alot since then. Basiclly just find a parts store, ask around someone you know might know of a good place, then decide what kind of setup you want, and how much you want to spend, I was planning to get a 650Mhz, but they stopped selling them and the 800 was the price of the 650. The minimum parts you need for a working computer are

• 1 ATX Case and power supply
• 1 Mother board w/ AGP slot
• 1 Proccesor
• RAM
• Hard Drive
• Floppy Drive
• Keyboard
• Monitor
• Video Card

Then to actually be able to use your computer you'll want a cd/dvd rom, a mouse, sound card, cooling system, and anything else you want to put in (ie CD-RW or even better a new DVD-RW)
And don't forget your OS, You could probably get Win98 for about $30, which I think is still the best OS for power users (people who want to make their comp do what they want how they want it). I don't think I missed anything, but I probably did. You'll want to decide what exactly you want and what you want to spend and stick to it. To decide what parts you want do some research, check some of the HW guides out there, if you need any help you can ask me if you want, but what I know might be a little old since I haven't kept up to date the last few months, but I'd still be able to help somewhat.

Or if this all seems too much, you can go for a package deal type thing like gateway or dell or whoever else, I tend to think you get ripped off and you also don't get the control that you do with building, and most of the time building it yourself you know that you are getting brand name parts instead of samsung cpus.

Oh don't get be wrong, I love Saab. I used to run small rally races in a saab 900S. Handled great! (understeered a little though) What I meant to say was that when you have a whole bunch of diffrent companies from diffrent countries put together a computer, (some of which have no businness in the industry to begin with(Samsung in particular)) stuff just doesn't work. So, Sweden eh?

Well, I used to run HW on my P2-350 with TNT2 Ultra. It worked ok for me, though sometimes when there were ships all over my screen, the fps came down to about 10...

Anyway, since 2 weeks I've upgraded my Asus P2B with a Celeron 1Ghz and a WD-Caviar 60GiG. Things tend to be running very smooth now.

Well you could fun hw and cat on any comp thats more than a 400 megahertz as long as u have a good video card. I have a geforce2 and it runs awesome on hw and cat. for about $99 canadien, u can get a geforce2mx, a little slower, but all the same good. Also, cat funs a bit smoother than hw

I ran HW on a 450mhz p3 64 megs of ram and a tnt2 16meg card with a 10 gig HD.


abouth a month ago i quoted a computer price for a company they needed 4 computers to be built. price was about 400 dollar per computer.

it was basicaly a duron 950mhz intergrated sound and video
512 megs of ram 20 or 40 gig HD i cant remember wich
48x CD rom drive

if you want cheap computer parts go to http://www.pricewatch.com only thing i would suggest about them is thier ram dont go for cheap generic crap mushkin, crucial and the sort are good. bad ram can be bad for your whole computer.

DELL!!! but quite honestly they both suck, dell is more expensive, but they use better parts and they are more upgradable, compaq's are cheap and easy to use, but good luck trying to upgrade anything, just about every thing is built onto the motherboard.

Here's one tip when shopping for a new computer and you'll want to be able to upgrade it. Do not get anything that says it has onboard anything, that means that the components (ie video and sound cards, modems) are all part of the motherboard and usually are impossible to deactivate. Also watch for things saying something like "64 Mb RAM (4Mb shared)" that means that all your RAM is being shared by your hardware, you really only have 60Mb ram, the other 4 is part of the vid card (this usually also means that everything is onboard) shared ram hardware is also impossible to upgrade. Compaq's, HP's are always onboard, IBM, DELL, Gateway... usually on board

If you buy a dell and it has intergrated video or sound and decide you want to put in a new card you can disable said onboard monstrousities in the bios.But i suggest you build it your self its easy to put together you can take your assemebled PC to a PC tech and he will put in any software you want and have it up and running in less then a day for a fee if your are unsure about your abilities.Thier are lots of online tut's to show you how to build a PC of your own. You will save hundreds of dollars.

Thats the way it works in theory, in reality things don't work out that way, alot of the time they still use up resources, and if RAM is shared you can't disabled, which really sux, and alot of the time disabliing the card in the bios creates hardware conflicts.

By the way: Samsung is producing very much: So far I have seen computer parts (monitors), TV equipment, machines in a company for producing automobile airbag control devices, and my cellular phone is made by Samsung too. Saab not only produces computer parts and air planes, but also cars. Toyota also is a gun manufacturer, and Texas Instruments builds guidance units for laser guided bombs too. Additionally there are many companies which own other companies: I never had thought here in Germany a company which provides cellular phone network services also is the owner of Krauss-Maffei, where the best Main Battle Tank worldwide, the Leopard 2, is being produced... So companies always can be good for some surprise!

why yes i am a pro thanks for noticing my business name (starts in janurary) is called Wreck Techs. i've never seen a problem with intergrated video cards still taking up mem but i might happen (see'in as how they arent doing anything once you have a replacement preforming video rendering). the only thing i would say is to watch out for PC's you buy with no AGP slot wich really really sucks.

I've seen it on my dads old compaq and saw it on a computer my dad almost bought to replace it, for compaq like companies the best upgradability you can expect is maybe being able to expand your RAM (maybe) and USB, you might be lucky and are able to go further but don't expect to be able to, and yeah get AGP, 4x if you can.

dial up wise att&t is good my brother uses it on his laptop high speed wise it really depends on your area DSL might suck in your area and cable might be the way to go or it might be the other way around check out http://www.dslreports.com and do a search for your area

CPU wise pentium is better then cyrix hell a half eatin dorito is better then cyrix

DO NOT EVER GET CYRIX!!! The are probably worse than your samsung cpu, Intel or AMD are the way to go, I personally prefer Inter Celreons, cheap, good performance and really overclockable.
