Review:
This is, lets be blunt, a Scorsese masterpiece. Every bit is nuanced, and beautifully done. The cinematography is excellent, unobtrusive and often beautiful, setting the scenes with the right tone, without ever jostling the viewer. None of this shakey cam crap that seems to be the new thing in cinema, instead clean, crisp shots that transport you to into the movie.
Not to mention the plot, which is uncompromising in its execution and, for once, actually surprises the hell out of you. The end will spin your head around faster than an eight ball of coke. But even further, it provides a look, a profound one of that from a view that sees a society roting from within and no one, including the good guys come out ahead. But probably the best example of just how good the writing is comes out in the tension, constant tension that does not rely on gore or action scenes. Instead
All of which, is of course redoubled by the All star cast, who mesh there talents perfectly to provide a redoubling effect on there already touted acting skills. I was simply blown away by the skill of the actors in this movie, even the supporting actors could have easily led (and have) a less forceful movie. DiCaprio provides a performance which few could in his portrayal of his character, emotionally complex and explosive precisely as does Daemon. But Nicholson, Nicholson may as well be considered an acting god after his performance as the Irish mob boss Frank Costello.
Finally comes the music, which provides the perfect atmosphere. Fitting, and not overdone. It helps place you there much as does the cinematographer, you never really think about it, but it provides the perfect atmosphere.
