Make sure you have a version that has compatible plugins. Yafn has done most of the recompiles, iirc, run searches here on the forums to see which versions are supported. I believe it's 3 5 6 and 7 currently.

Any 3D modeling program that can export to .obj will work if you use CFHodEd.

And I'd recommend learning how to do the scripting bits before trying to tackle the expense and headache of Maya. If you can't handle the scripting, you may find the joint hierarchy in Maya very frustrating (when rigging a ship for use in HW2.)

When I say "the scripting" I'm referring to basic stuff like the *.ship and *.wepn files, since these are easy to read once they're decompiled and it's generally good to ease yourself into modding instead of just throwing effort and assets at it.

So there you have it, get a feel for what you'll need to know and do once you get Maya, and then decide if it's worth the money or not. Thanks to CFHodEd you no longer need to shell out hundreds of dollars just to get your ships in the game, but it is a bit easier with Maya once you get the hang of it.

If you just want a basic 3d modelling program i'd suggest either wings3d or blender. You can either search them on google or their links are on karos graveyard. X

You can use wordpad to open and modify .ship and .wepn files. I would go with Maya: it has a smooth interface and it is a very easy program to use (one of the best out there) once the basics are down.

Buying Maya will not be an easy task because it is a professional program which can cost thousands and thousands of dollars, unless you manage to get a student discount, or the free personal learning addition (PLE).
