Ideas for Bioshock and other RPG's

As you many know Bioshock is to (hopefully) be repased next year.

As someone who has played Sytem Shock 1,2 (The spiritual predecessors) I Have a few ideas for suggested improvements

    1. I don’t want to be the one guy vs 1K zombies/mutants/ robots etc Give me some AI allies. – see HL2 and Halo. As ref. Yes this is survival horror but I’m sure I’m not the only non mutated guy left. - I wou’d like to come across several groups of survivors. Some of whom have barricaded themselves in rooms etc… They can at as NPC and send us on quests and or fight alongside us as we take down one of the Big bosses.

    Spoiler

    3. Day/ night cycles – Yes you are at the bottom of the ocean but it would be awesome to see lights come on at local time 7AM and then switch off at midnight.
If combined with a rest option (below) it would be awesome.

    REST/ Safe areas
Lets see if we can have areas that are “safe” that we can barricade
I find an old room/ apartment near an elevator that I can lock from the inside I can then “rest” to heal and regain stanima etc..
However if I don’t have a safe area near by I can make an area suitable

I.E. on a mall level I can go to security and fix or re-wire the video system to alert me for the next six hours if an enemy nears point X - Point X being a room where I can stash some chips / soda / Health packs etc, I could then move a cot and a couch into the area using the cot to enable the rest function I then put a couch or file cabinet, or even chair next to the door that opens inward. Thus locking it - or at least preventing most enemies form getting thru.

    Spoiler

I’d also like to see some option to have two or more factions of surviors.
    1. the former boss of the city and the company
    2. the thourists
    3. upkeep staff.

As with #1 each group would be able to give you “missions” or quests. Completing such a quest would imprive your ranking with the group but it could theoretically decrease your aproval of other goups

Of couse some may not feel it is survior horror game if all of the above is implimnted but I would like to see something new and not just a re-hash of the same tricks I’ve seen a dozen times before.

Does anyone have any ideas for this or other RPG's they would like to see in the future?

I don't want AI allies. They get in the way and hinder you in most games they're in, and the ones where they don't do so have to break believability in order to make them not do so.

Incidentally, Bioshock isn't really an RPG... it's an FPS with RPG elements. Same deal as with System Shock 2.
Let's Play Europa Universalis 3: Divine Wind
Let's Play Master of Magic: Abandoned
In the beginning there was nothing. Then Steam crashed.

Ok, I hadn't looked up anthing about Bioshock until just now..

    And damn it looks sweet.

I hope it is as good as SS2.

I also want no AI allies.

I want to be all alone with the terror.....

Oh? I thought BS like Syetem Shock was an FPS/RPG hybrid.
    - I just clasify it as an RPG to diferenctiate it from all the other FPS's

As for the allies I'm not talking about tons I'm talking about a few - kind of like FR Gegori in Ravenholm.

Somehow being the only person left - while scarry just doesn't seem right I mean if stuff hits the fan and takes out a whole colony what is stopping it from taking you out? I mean one man vs a whole collony is kind of like a non-milaria misquito trying to stop a person form nailing it with a jiant flyswater

Well after having now watched the Bioshock Trailer and the Bioshock Developer's Trailer, I can say that what you want, they kind of are already doing.

    Drones

    Other allies

As for having safe zones.. well they seem to be there, but I doubt you just auto-heal, since they want you to be starved for resources, a hallmark of survival horror.

While tooling around YouTube I came across this video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p8tOeN32eE

Some guy doing a speed run of System Shock 2 in 36 minutes. Pretty impressive.

You should read the Sept issue of PC Gamer. It has a very long and detailed preview of Bioshock. Those guys have a pretty original vision.

They are making bio shock just about how you said it should be made.

WTF? The best I know of is D'arcy's from TTLG, and that was like 2 hours 45 mins. My best is about 5 hours, and even thats considered fast.

That video was sped up at least 5x. He waltzes through the character creation section in about thirty seconds.

System Shock is scary because you are alone with no guaranteed safe place. Adding those in turns it into, well, HL2. Ugh.

you need to be all alone for it to be frightening, equally you can never be safe.

Guys Who said my Safe place was perfectly safe.
My point was that like in the Night of the Living dead - I.E dozens of zombies are chasing you you run into a room and jam the door shut. A bigdaady could just blast it open but it would give you a few minutes to go in the airshaft and get away. Conversly, you could set the room up in advance and duck in the shaft.
I kinda used a desk and safe in the 4th or 5th level of SS2 to the same effect. - I stored extra stuff in the safe - stuf that I would need later but did not have room for in my invitory. then I used a chair and desk as a barrier. Zombies would chase me I then jumped the desk and turned- they remained out of reach with thier wrench while I uzed the H4 Apallo energy gun to nail them.

In any event it is just a thought.

Half life 2 safe areas were perfectly safe. Enemies would never attack there, even if they were ten seconds behind you when you entered. In system shock 2 you could very easily appropriate a cleared section to use as a storeroom and you'd be pretty much safe there, but not entirely. Given time there'd be something wandering by or waiting just outside to surprise you. You never felt completely safe. That's what people are talking about.

Any scary game should be mostly safe anyway, otherwise it's just action. The fear factor in Doom 3 lost its edge about the zillionth time you shotgunned an imp. They just weren't something to be scared of anymore, and the game had to resort to behind-you teleports for the kind of cheap jolt B-movies sink to. System Shock scattered a few powerful enemies here and there, and kept the immersion-jarring surprises to a minimum.

Actually in all honesty I thought it was pretty bad. It was just a rehashed version of Halflife 1, and it reused all the cliched things I hate in the genre, which will continue to be industry standard for ages because of it. I pretty much only own it for Dystopia and GMod.

The game looks very interesting, but I was wondering how long it takes for that feeling of imersion in a different world to fade away? half life 2 for instance had horrible imersion because you had to load for two minutes every so often.

What. The. Hell? Since when was immersion a function of an engine's technical prowess? Immersion is all about internally consistent design and atmosphere. Judging by the way you are talking about it, it would seem that you imply that, say, removing save/load functionality from a game would only be a good thing for immersion.

no, the inside of the game was great, but every time it went on and loaded I'd go and make myself some tea while I waited for it to finish loading, which REALLY made it hard for me to feel imersed in the game for more than 10 minutes at a time, because it was always loading, and because I always had to piss.
