A quick guide to restoring Gabriel Angelos to Skirmish (voice, model..) [updated]

The new FC voice isn't as good as the old one, in my opinion.. no fire in the belly.
But, having restored the voice it looked wrong on the new model (which I have fewer
issues with than I thought I would.. anyhow). This tutorial/guide will tell you how
to restore Gabriel Angelos to the skirmish game fully.

100% compatible with online play and independant of mods or patches. Good huh?

    Tools/what you need:

Latest version of the Dawn of War Tools, the ModPackager.exe in particular.
You can use Corsix SGA Reader to extract the models, but it stalls on
extracting the sound directories. These tools are used to open the SGA
archives, which is where all the files we will need are located.

    Dawn of War still installed

    Time.

To be comfortable modding Dawn of War, familiarity with the SGA folder
    structure etc. helps.

To restore Gabriel Angelos model to Dawn of War - Dark Crusade:
    ***************************************************************

    Open: ...\Dawn of War\W40k\W40kData-Whm-High.sga

    Locate force_commander.whe and force_commander.whm (art\ebpa\races\space_marines\troops\)

Extract these and place them in:

    ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data\art\ebps\races\space_marines\troops

This will restore Gabriel Angelos to the skirmish game

To restore Gabe to the UI
    *************************

    Open: ..\Dawn of War\W40k\W40kData.sga

Locate forcecommander_icon.tga, there will be 2, both will need to be extracted.
The first can be found here: data\art\ui\ingame\

Extract it and place it here:

    ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data\art\ui\ingame\space_marine_icons\

The second can be found here: data\art\ui\ingame_disabled\

Extract it and place it here:

    ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data\art\ui\ingame_disabled\space_marine_icons\

    To restore Gabriel Angelos voice
    ********************************

(the following can also be used as a guide to restoring
any of the old voices to Dark Crusade).

The reason it's done this way?

When I did this to restore the old Chaos Lord voice to Winter Assault, it would
only work when the files were placed here. It would also only work if ALL the sound files were
extracted. Dawn of War seems to like it's sound files either all Archived, or all extracted, it
doesn't like a mix of the two. Anyhow, onto the second part of restoration...

    Using the Modpackager, open:

    ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Locale\[language]\W40kData-Sound-Speech.sga

[language] represents the language your copy of Dark Crusade is in. For me, it's English.

At the top level, where the red diamond is, select this, and from the tools menu select
Archive\extract. Extract the entire archive to your desktop (or an alternative location
of your choice). It will create a new folder in that location called: Sound

    Open ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\

Create a new folder, name it: Data_Sound

Open this folder, and create a new folder: Med

CUT the newly extracted Sound folder, and PASTE it IN Med (important for later so we don't
    get confused).

Next, using the modpackager once again, open:

    ...\Dawn of War\W40k\Locale\[language]\W40kData-Sound-Speech.sga

[language] represents the language your copy of Dark Crusade is in. For me, it's English.

At the top level, where the red diamond is, select this, and from the tools menu select
Archive\extract. Extract the entire archive to your desktop (or an alternative location
of your choice). It will create a new folder in that location called: Sound

Open the new folder sound, navigate to here:

    ...\sound\speech\races\space_marines\force_commander

Copy the entire folder, and place it here:

    ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data_Sound\Med\sound\speech\races\space_marines

A couple of last things to do and we're finished.

In Windows, open: ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data_Sound\Med\sound\speech\races\
    space_marines\force_commander\selection\

    Copy this file: 403119.fda

Put it on the desktop and rename it to: 402119.fda

CUT and PASTE it back. 402119.fda is a new sound file, it contains the new 'Walk softly
and carry a big gun' speech. 403119.fda is the older version, renaming and pasting it over
removes the last of the new FC chat.

    In Windows, open:
...Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data_Sound\Med\sound\speech\races\space_marines\force_commander\die\

    Copy these files:

    die_1.fda
    die_2.fda
    die_3.fda

Place them on the desktop and rename them to:

    2776200.fda
    403400.fda
    403401.fda

CUT and PASTE these back into \force_commander\die\

This replaces the last of the death vocals.

This completes the transformation, Gabriel Angelos rides again!

Very nice, do you happen to know if this breaks the internet or not?

EDIT: Nevermind, you mentioned it in your post.

    Excellent guide!

  4. #4
Great stuff! Any chance of one for the old IG general too? I like my General to sound older than 18.

  5. #5
    Quick n dirty explanation:

Extract the imperial_captain WHE and WHM files from the ..\WXP\WXPData-Whm-High.sga (similar process to the FC really).

Use the above method for replacing sounds, just extract the IG sounds from WA and add them in to the ..\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data_Sound\Med\ directory tree.

  6. #6
Isn't this in violation with the lua as you could easilly do the same to change your [language] version to the english one? As some dubbed versions are a whole lot cheaper than the english one.
But yeah, pretty much everyone hates the new voices I think.

  7. #7
The EULA? I don't think so, to do this you have to have a valid installation of DOW (and WA for IG voices/models) and Dark Crusade. I'm not supplying files, just the method to restore the old voices/models should you wish to.

Damnit I uninstalled the DoW/WA as DC only needs serial codes from DoW/WA, any chance anyone could post the files? ...please?

  9. #9
    Just re-install, extract and uninstall.

  10. #10
Uhh, yes, eula. had just woken up when I wrote that. Anyhow, what the op suggests might not be against the eula but as you could do the same to change the dubbed voices. That is. There's been several topics about the subject.

People had been asking for the method to replace the files, not the replacement files themselves. And the threads all got closed.

But I'm sure to change some of the voices back to WA or DoW ones too.

Personally i like Thule much more than Gabriel. To the point i like SM in DC the most while i never liked them in DoW/WA/Dowpro.

If Alexander didnt have such a p&&sy voice or had at least as good as in campaign i wouldnt mind him too. Sturm is cooler

Oh yes, Sindri, here we go!

If there is any voice that really needed no changes it was Sindri's. The new voice is good and all, no real complains... it just can't match the original.

First post updated with two additional tasks to fully complete the transformation (Restoring Gabe to the UI, and removing the last of the new FC vocals: death vocals).

@LNA-Big_D: Yes, if at any time you wish to restore the new FC (and/or the other characters if you edited any others in), just delete the files we've extracted.

To sum up removal, delete the following:

    ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data_Sound
    ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data\art\ui
    ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data\art\ebps\races\space_marines\troops\force_commander.whe
    ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data\art\ebps\races\space_marines\troops\force_commander.whm

Ive never really done anything like this before but i do like General Sturn from WA much better than th is IG general.
Im having problems though figuring out how to change him. When i try to open up that .../WXP/WXPData...file it asks me what file i want to use to open it up. im sure its something simple but i dont know.
Could someone give me a little more details on what to do here? Its the first step and im stuck on it. Thanks

A nice guide, I've found out a few things to add about changing sounds. You don't have to copy all the old sound files, but you do have to copy the _default.rat file
from multiple directories. Using the Nobz as an example, you shoud have ..\Dawn of War -Dark Crusade\W40k\Data_sound\Full\sound\ _default.rat \speech\ _default.rat\races\orks\ _default.rat\nobz
In short you need the _default.rat file from the base \sound folder, the \speech folder, and the root folder of whatever race you want to change.
Also note that instead of data_sound\med\ I used \data_sound\Full\ which lets you use the voices with sound quality set to high.

oh shoot im sorry. I totally missed that. Thanks

But now im on a new problem. Using ModPackager im able to find the imperial captain files where you said they would be but there is no option to extract. The only one is under the "Archives" pull down in which the option is "extract archive" and i dont think i want to do that. Plus, this may be just because im not able to extract just the imperial captain files, but im not able to find the imperial gaurd under the races file for DC (nor the tau or necron) I know i have WA installed. I started it up just to double check and it worked fine.

sorry. I am doing alot of my own searching. Im only coming to you once ive done everything i can think of.
    Hope you can help.

Use Corsix SGA extractor to extract single files, use the modpackager to extract the sound archive (corsix SGA extractor won't do it).

Has links to Corsix extractor, as well as many other useful tools

Nice guide that has bettered my DC experience. My thanks. I do have one quick question concerning the new Chaos Lord model. I tried the above techniques to restore the old Chaos Lord model but it doesn't work quite right. Has anyone been able to successfully restore the old Chaos Lord model?

One complaint I have with Relic is that they keep changing unit models and voices with every expansion when in my opinion the old models and voices are better than the new ones.

I have noticed one other graphical bug in DC and it is with the Necrons. In observation mode when viewing an ally/enemy Necron player when they research the Grim Reaper at the Energy Core the research box for the Grim Reaper is solid pink? It displays fine after research and as a player researching the Grim Reaper it displays fine it is only when observing another Necron player that I notice this pink box. Has anyone else noticed this?

Any assistance with the above will be greatly appreciated.

Well OK i have all the original voices back but I was wondering if there was a way to make them useable on high quality? Medium sound is OK but on my comp it makes everything sound muffled and its really agrravating, but the new IG general voice is worse than muffled sounds
You're off to work with your briefcase full of guts.

  25. #25
Where it says: ..\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data_Sound\Med

in the guide, substitute: ..\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data_Sound\High

instead, and it should be fine. A poster above mentioned doing this and it worked for him.

Have you been able to restore the old Chaos Lord model hangar-8? I've successfully restored the FC and Imperial Guard General but the Chaos Lord eludes me.

  27. #27
Great news. Finally a way to rid myself of the bloody awful new IG general and FC.

BTW - just out of curiosity, when you change the models back is it the new ones that are still shown on the main menu. Or do Gabriel and Gen Sturn replace them on the menu aswell?

Oh, and what does UI stand for?

No the models on the main menu stay the same and do not change to Gabriel and General Sturn. Maybe there's a way to change the appearance on the main menu too? Oh well the main menu isn't a big deal for me I just wish I could restore the old Chaos Lord model back.

Apart from having someone come round and do it for you, unfortunately not.

Modding your game can be a daunting task if you've never done it before, but it's not as hard as you think. If you place the files incorrectly, all you have to do is either cut and paste, or delete them entirely

Can someone please post a replay of Angelos in DC so I can see this in action? I love Angelos he was my favorite of all the leaders so i'm am willing to go through the guide but I want to see it work 1st. Would it be hard to make this into a mod for all us dumb dumbs who have no exp messing with files

Also could someone post a link to the mod tools i'll need because i'm not sure what version of tools i'm suppose to be even looking for

Hangar if you're only interested in Restoring VoiceOvers do you still need both ModTools and ModPackager or do you need only Mod Packager also for The Voiceover do you also need Corsix SGA reader I haven't taken the plunge yet out of fear of destroying my game.

  42. #42
To extract the voices use Modpackager.exe in the Relic Tools. You won't destroy your game, as all you are doing is uncompressing files. DOW prefers to run uncompressed files and so, when the game loads, will use these in preference to the ones in the SGA archives. If you put the files in the wrong place, they just won't work (and DOW will default to the DC sound files in the SGAs).

If you put the old voices back and decide you don't like them anymore, simply delete them, again, no harm done to game files. We're adding files, not replacing files.. the originals still exist inside the SGA archives

You have to do some tweaking to get the old voice to work properly in DC (read-it's not a simple cut-'n-paste job).

Do you have to do the same for the others? I've never liked that asmatic ork gorgutz, and while our new chaos lord and sorceror are nice... well. Dinobot cannot be beaten, and I like the old sorcerer.

EDIt: Been messing around with this for what feels like hours, and I'm getting no joy with the sounds working. I've extracted them, but despite putting them in the right place, and renaming the required files, no joy.

Are you perhaps putting the files in ...\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\W40k\Data_Sound\Med\ but rinning the sound ingame on high? That might account for it.

About the Chaos voices again :P. I like the new Sorcerer voice but the old one I was already sold to so I prefer that evil one. Though he does hear more like a sorcerer now.

The Chaos lord i have no complaints. I mean even at the start screen if you play chaos you see that amazingly good model, in contrast with all the other 'less detaied' models for the other heroes (especially IG and SM)

I never liked his lava head . and his voice now resembles death, cool!

I dont have these mod tools. But i d like Angelos back too so I might try.

Also a guide to remove that kid called alexander?

...Shall I release a 'patch' restoring old voices? I've managed to get the warboss, chaos lord, FC and sorceror working... I think I can do the others...?

Have you looked at how large the 'patch' file would be? That and I doubt Relic would be happy with the community distributing it's sound files across the net for free.

it would be a cool service to the community and it'd be pretty big but worth it I'd do it, but being deployed I have little time now for such things to work on even if I went to take the plunge so RoadKill if you make a nice patch for it, I'd definitely appreciate it, as well as some of my buddies who are deployed with me who play this game religiously with me on our time off.
