    Map & Thread Naming Guidelines

    ATT:
From input with a couple of us, we'd like to suggest the following naming guidelines:

    Map Threads
Map threads should include a prefix as following:
[New Map] For COMPLETE, PLAYABLE MAPS, ON WHICH NO FURTHER WORK IS GOING TO BE DONE.
[WIP] For work in progress maps, pretty self-explanotory.

    Map Files
As suggested by AppleHead, the mapfiles should be named by the following format, to clarify things up. Also MajorZiggy drove a good point about revision numbers, so the format has been changed a little.
F.ex. if your map name is Example 1, and it's a 2 player map, and the first installation, the file should be named
    "2p_example1_0.xxx"
and accordingly, a 4 player map named Valley, which is on its 3rd revision, should be named
    "4p_Valley_3.xxx"

Again, these are not strict rules until the community approves of them, these are our suggestion for clarification of said instances.

    Map Ratings
This is another suggestion im throwing out for the mapping community.

We could start using the "rate thread" function to give scores to maps. After there are a lot of maps, casual viewers (whom are really important to get some maps spread out to the playing community) could easily navigate to the ones with the highest scores.

For clarity, we should use this function ONLY on maps with the [New Map] prefix, as in my opinion we could rate work in progress maps, but i think it would be pretty pointless.

This is the best place to add this. Since I released the first map I'll standardize it and see if anyone follows.

[NEW MAP]-Maps that are playable, "Release"
    [WIP]-Work in Progress

I've changed my threads appropriately. I know it's basically what you just said but in a more compact way.

I also think a proper map naming system like the one used for DoW should be used amongst CoH mappers. EG: 2 player map called Example 1, so the map file should be called 2p_Example_1.sgb

This would make it easy for people to find different map types and makes the maps look more professional.

I edited the first post for clarity. I think if people follow these guidelines, we'll have a clean, easy to navigate mapping forum. Of course, i am not the goverment, these are just suggestions, critique is appriciated.

Hopefully, the mappers actually DO follow these guidelines.

Might I suggest adding a revision as well.

You have put Example 1 as:

    2P_Example_1

Does this mean that it is called Example and the revision is 1?

    2P_Example1_0

Would be better in this instance as I can see that the map is called Example 1 (removing spaces) and the map is at revision 0.

To reiterate, a 3v3 map called Hill Sector 144 at revision 3.

    eg/ 6P_HillSector144_3

Don't know if this is helpful or just confusing things but I think showing the revision is handy.

sounds good, and I don't mean to bring up too much change here, but if it's a 2 person map, couldn't you name it Example_1 (2).sgd? That way when you load the map in game it has the same format as the rest of the maps...

Before telling anyone on how to post maps how about checking your own spelling. How about editing the Post Title using proper grammar.

Epidemik: Bumping threads less than 24 hours after previous post is not good practice

All posts asking for sticky have been deleted, as it is stickied now. I also changed the title a small amount - only one sticky should be marked as "please read first", and guidelines is a better word to convey the intention.

In support of this - I'm using the search phrase "[NEW MAP]" when looking for maps to download. If the map name doesn't convey the number of players, I'm skipping it.

So if I want to post a 2v2 map (as a beta) called "Crossings", i would name it as follows, right?:

    [WIP]4p_crossings_v1.0*

*note: I am used to using the "v" to designate version (as in WC3, and many others). I think it makes more sense as a whole. Sorry if this pisses some people off, but I am going to do it (and I hope others will too). That aside, the format is correct, is it not?

    Cheers

if it is a beta i wouldnt called it "v1.0". Better is "v0.2" or "v1.0 beta" or something.

Otherwise how would you call your map, if it is out of beta-stage?

You won't get much help in this thread, it's for modding CoH. Post your question in this forum:
