    Homeworld Newb

Hi all. I came here for company of heroes in the first place. I started skinning alot of WW2 stuff recently. I got kind of bored of tanks sometimes so i gave the Homeworld2 Demo a try. I must say iam very imprest about the whole style/music/interface. I guess i grab the full copy anytime soon. My question is : Whould it make a BIG diffrence to skip HW1 ? As i read there will be no HW3 ( or maybe not? ) in the future. I want to get deeper into the story so if there is a thread that gives me a good overlook on the universe please post it.

Anyhow i loved elite alot but never get exited with freelancer at all. Well its a good game but...you know. HW2 seems that it has some strategical options and intelligent gameplay to offer.

No, it doesn't make much of a difference storywise. I intend to get the others at a later date.

The HW1 storyline isn't crucial to understanding HW2, but it can be helpful. (Plus, HW1's better, story-wise). I'd highly recommend you get Homeworld and Cataclysm if you can find them, they're both great games.

As for HW3, there've been several threads around here discussing it, but the short version is: Sierra owns the Homeworld license, THQ owns Relic (the developer of Homeworld) and the two publishers aren't too friendly at the moment, so we're unlikely to see HW3 any time soon. Check out this thread (stickied at the top of this forum) for more discussion.

    Yes!!!!

okay, so the stories are not /essential/ from HW1 or Cata, but they are great games. If you can get your hands on copies (not iso's or pirated's!) then power to you...

    And welcome to the boards.

Although the graphics might be a little dated, I highly recommend the original Homeworld. Among other things, the story stands out.

I'd even say that HW2 is the weakest, story wise. Gameplay and graphic-wise it's at the top, of course.
So if you care for a good story, play the games.
If you care for an easy game, play HW2.

ps: even if you can't get the games, (and if you can), READ THE MANUALS!
    they are TOP.

I would recommend very very much that you play Homeworld before Homeworld 2, lest the latter gives you crazy ideas about how hyperspace is supposed to work. :hmm:

Unless of course he wants to see how technology retroprogresses that is...

If you play HW2 and then HW you can see how technology advances...but if you play them in chronilogical order #2 has many plotholes (more than to begin with).

    M02 was HORRIBLE.

So yeah, play Hw1 first, then hop over to Hw2.

Did they fix the ai? I haven't played it since release where the AI was fucking brutal. I think I gave up on the 12th level or so where

    Spoiler

because I couldn't kill the corvettes fast enough while still holding out against the 15 destroyers the AI threw at me.

I believe the patch Sierra released helped alleviate many of the single-player AI problems, including the mission you described.

I had a horrible fleet before that mission, so I built all my stuff during the mission.

I'd recommend you to play Homeworld 1 first. Just see it, and you'll see.

Well, if you want a great awesome campaign, play the HW one. It would be a good idea to play the HW campaign before HW2 anyways. The HW2 campaign isn't bad either, it just doesn't reach the level of the first one.

Gameplay-wise, HW2 is great. There's still a living modding community. I strongly recommend you to try out some of the mods after you've got accustomed to the game.

Yes! That's what I've been saying! Finally someone who agrees!

As for playing homeworld before homeworld 2, yes, this is a must, because, you see, the story progresses in a linear fashion and homeworld 2 might give away the (admittedly obvious) end to homeworld. Additionally, I personally find it difficult to go back to the homeworld ui after getting used to homeworld 2!
