B5 MOD Discussion Thread

  1. #801
Don't look now, but... there's a new update on the svn. A preview of the Eagle Nebula background I've been working on. I'm still tweaking the BGbuilder settings to get it optimized, so I won't call it done, but I think it's ready for an 'open beta'.

To see it, start a Area Capture skirmish on the map called Eagle Attack. It's just the mars map copied over, but I'll find a proper map to use with the background when it's done.

    Nice

Anything else new in this update?

Remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Not yet. Work is still progressing behind scenes, but isn't ready to be put on the SVN.

    Good to hear

I have to say gentlemen, what you have done to HW2 is simply amazing. Just looking at those Nova shots Pepper you would be hard pressed to to actually tell that it IS HW2 haha.

You truly are gods among men.
With regards to HW2 of course

  6. #806
Update your svn's. I updated the Eagle Nebula background. I forgot that the bgbuilder program mirrors the background from the image you start from, so the pillars of creation were backwards. I also made it a bit darker, which allowed me to increase the detail level without increasing the poly count, which sadly still is a bit too high for comfort. Let me know if the background causes slowdowns on your computers.

It's still missing proper lighting and stars.

*edit* for those who don't have the mod installed, go check out a few screenshots of the background I uploaded to moddb: http://www.moddb.com/mods/babylon-5-war-without-end1

  7. #807
Next background slated for inclusion in the mod: Coriana 6. The site of the final battle vs. the Vorlons and Shadows in the episode Into the Fire.

To get the layout of the nebula right, I've taken loads of screenshots from the episode and puzzled them together to get the full picture of how the nebula looks:

Next up: remove all those pesky ships that just had to be on screen. The episode would have been much better just showing the nebula instead of a boring old battlefield.

It'd have made my work easier in any case...

It looks to me that they took one of the pillars of creation and set it on it's side...

Perhaps there's a faster way to find a clean screen of it?

when I create the folder, or "library" as Windows 7 refers to it as, it does not give me the right click options as XP or whatever else intended OS SVN was designed to run on. It does give me the correct option if I right click on the bare screen, but not on the folder.

Can someone host the file on a more conventional and viable download source, like the big file on mediafire? It's not that it's too complicated, it just wont work for me, Windows 7 has a different layout.

I would have thought Windows 7 wouldn't have such a fundamental difference... at the very least the SVN people will take that into account.

Releasing Big files would probably be more troublesome and involve larger downloads

There is no Problem with Windows 7. I have it working here.
    Ringlearder:

Simply rightklick somewhere in explorer and use new-->folder. or something like this.(do not use libary folder) or you have not correctly installed SVN ...
    you may reinstall SVN

But I can confirm it's working like under Vista and XP (32Bit) even Windows 7 64BIt is working without any Problem.

Edit: SVN and Homeworld are both working with No workarounds on Windows 7 and Windows 7 64Bit.
Not even any compatibility mode on

  14. #814
I have to use compatibility mode myself or it claims to have a conflict with disk emulator software, but when I run it in NT compatibility mode, everything works perfectly in Windows 7. Including SVN. Both 32-bit and 64-bit.

Ok, I used to have emulator problems, but it was sporadic, and is no longer an issue as long as my DVD rom has been in use for a while, and as long as I do not change my system hardware.

For SVN, what I do is, I go to explorer:

Then I try to create a new folder, and there is no new folder option, and it will not allow me to drag and drop folders (I had already created the B5WWE library for the heck of it)

And when I right click on the library, it does not have the proper options for the SVN checkout:

But when I right click on blank space, it allows the option for SVN checkout:

...But it doesn't work because no category was selected.

I will try reinstalling, but which drive do you reccomend? my system disk? or the disk HW2 is installed under?

  16. #816
That's because you're going about it the wrong way. The libraries are virtual folders. They are used to place everything from several folders in one place.

You have to go down to the list of harddrives on your computer (C:, E:, F:, G: ) and create the folder there. Then it will work.

...in the folder I installed HW2 in? or SVN or which one?

  18. #818
Just make a new one anywhere on whatever drive you use for file storage, but personally I've put it directly into my HW2 folder. That way, I'm ready to play right after updating.

aw man, it's not even in a .big format, I guess I wont play it then, unless there is a way to have multiple data folders in use at once.

  20. #820
    -datapath yourpath -overridebigfile

It'd be pretty damned unwieldy to use subversion to distribute a .big file...

I don't mean to be needy, but could you post your datapath (the significant part of it)

  22. #822
my datapath is F:\HWAT\Dev\data2\ but I doubt that'll help you too much.

no no, it helped, so the whole thing would be:

    -F:\HWAT\Dev\data2\G:\Program Files (x86)\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -overridebigfile?

I use my "yourpath" for an example.

  24. #824
ringleader - you know you can just copy your entire homeworld2 directory right? I have 5 or 6 different installs on my system, just copy pasted the HW2 program folder.

yeah, but my hard disk is nearly full, so I would prefer to just, use a different datapath (if I knew how)

Preferably, I would favor a big file, is it possible to create a big file with those crazy SVN files?

  26. #826
You're a little off in the way you put the datapath in:

    -F:\HWAT\Dev\data2\G:\Program Files (x86)\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe " -overridebigfile?
    It's supposed to be

    "G:\Program Files (x86)\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -datapath F:\HWAT\Dev\data2\ -overrideBigFile

Note that the datapath and overrideBigFile parameters are added onto the existing target line, and that they're case sensitive. Also, the space you see between .exe and " is added by the forum and shouldn't be there.

You can find a full list of possible parameters on this page:

New EA Cargo Tug for y'all, that should be showing up ingame soonish. Not sure how much it will be able to do, but eventually I'd imagine they'll end up fairly useful.

yes the mod is still being worked on.

  34. #834
Yeah, no worries there. The mod files aren't hosted on TGU, so work can progress as usual even though TGU is down. It does hamper the team communication a bit though.

From what I remember of playing a really old version this mod does look good, reminds me of the old FS2 mod for homeworld.

  36. #836
Looks like TGU is back once more. No news on what caused the downtime, but everything seems to be in working order.

    @ TON_Viper

What about using msn live messenger? Most of us should be using it and we could contact\send messages to each other when the TGU forum goes down?

  38. #838
Not a bad idea. I'm pretty much always online on messenger. Try asking CnlPepper about it on the dev forum.

I like the new video you made. It really shows off our recent advances.

Thanks for taking the time to make them.

  41. #841
Just to prevent our thread from dropping completely off the front page, here's a mod update:

CnlPepper is working on new weapon effects for the various beam weapons. You can find his work in progress on the SVN.

Other stuff is also being worked on and will be put on the SVN as it gets finished. Expect one or more new models ingame soon.

    Excellent!

  43. #843
We're inching ever closer to completion. I recommend that you update your svns and play the Epsilon Eridani map.

Here's why you'll want to do it: http://www.moddb.com/mods/babylon-5-...bylon-5-ingame

I posted some more eye candy on the moddb profile. This time I took the screenshots on my home PC in Full HD res.

  45. #845
Hi TON_Viper, I watched the screenies on Moddb, and they are really awesome. However, they would be really breathtaking if you'd apply anti-aliasing so smooth all the edges out. If it's not too much trouble, could you re-post the shots?

    Thanks,
    7

  46. #846
Very well, I'll do that. I won't retake the same shots however. Expect a new batch at the maximum detail level my GTX 280 will allow as soon as I get them uploaded.

  47. #847
You'll run out of resolution on your monitor before you cap out that gfx card.

It's crashing on me on the Epsilon Eridani map... like it's overloading the computer but it couldn't possibly be! The lag starts when I get close to the nebulas and the crash happens just a little while after B5 spawns...

Any clues? I put vsync on and I noticed a little bit of improvement, but it didn't negate the crashes...

  49. #849
Post your computer specs. What graphics card and processor do you have? Also, post your hw2.log file. We'll see if it mentions anything that could have caused the crash.

I know I've run it successfully on my laptop with a Core Duo processor and a Geforce Go 7600 graphics card. It did lag a bit when I focused on the station, but it doesn't crash for me.

I know the nebulae cause a bit of strain on slower machines, so that might be a contributing factor. I plan on remaking that map anyway at a later date, without the nebulae, in the style of the earth and mars maps.

If you feel adventurous, you can edit the map yourself to remove the asteroids and nebula to see if it makes a difference for you.

  50. #850
I wonder if this might be a result of the large amount of video memory B5 requires. I was worried it was using too much.

TONV, could you remove the asteroids and dust clouds around B5 on the epsilon map? I'm not sure they are really needed anymore.
