Spooge error with VISTA and 8800 GTX

    Hello everyone

I did a lot of googling on this subject and also read the guide on your forum.

I just got my new machine and get this "Spooge Driver not found. Verify that ... " error.
The machine has 2x 8800 GTX in SLI with newest forceware drivers (100.59) running under Windows Vista.

Is my card not (yet) supported ?
Is DirectX 10 the problem ?

Does anyone know a solution ?

    TIA

    Hi,
sorry for my low English level.

Your probleme come froms nvidia 100.xx drivers.
I have a 7950GX2, the game work fine with 97.46 drivers, but not with the 100.xx series (same error).

As you have a 8800 serie videocard, no 9x.xx drivers is available for you. your only solution is wainting.

Meh that sucks... well at least good to know that it isnt the card itself ?
Is there no way to circumvent this problem ?

    Thanks for your answer

According to post 24 in this thread you can download software to emulate an ATI graphics card and play DoW. This will work until nvidia get their act together and release some fully functional drivers. If you want to speed up the process then email nvidia tech support - the more people who complain about the problem the higher a priority they will give it.

Thanks man ... I am gonna try that circumvention asap ..
Thanks a lot for your help .. I will also complain to nvidia tech support and ask them to fix this issue .

    Edit*
This 3danalyze tool works like a charm
(For those reading this thread later: first select Config.exe then the Game.exe)

    Thanks again for your help

I ask me if really Nvidia to blame for it or some crazy programming in DoW. All other games work really and find the card.

I have that exact problem with my 8800 gtx with the 100.59 drivers. Guess we'll just have to wait. Luckily I still have my 2 yr old rig which can still run it.

Btw, nice setup you got there (2x8800 GTX!)

The 3danalyze thing works perfect. Give it a try.

Thank you ... saved money for over 2 years for it ...

The problem is that the driver version is not recognized by a simple file.

I've attached a file that you can place in the \drivers sub directory. You'll need to rename the existing file (after unsetting the read only property) in order to save it.

Note, this is a quick and dirty fix, and it will allow the game to try and start up on driver versions that are NOT supported.

Oh, and one more thing, you'll want to run the graphics config tool after you put that file in place.

I just wanted to let you know that Relic is looking into this and we're trying to get it into a patch.

    !!!! Really??!?

I've been holding off buying a computer till this problem is good and fixed. I can't tell you how awesome it is to hear that from you, Buggo

Thanks a million for the heads up and effort, Relic!!

The problem already is fixed by using that modified file I provided. It works with Vista and an 8800 using the 100 series drivers.

For me at least your fix causes severe graphical glitches with all drivers Uber, its nice to be able to run it period but i'm still waiting on an official fix from either nvidia, driver wise or a relic patch that makes it all work right.

Actually, Vista (32bits) DOES support Windows XP drivers.

You will lose out on some advanced features and be limited to Directx9, but why not give it a swirl?

Had this same problem with my 6600GT (in Vista) running 100.59 so the problem is the driver. UberJumpers fix also worked for me, thanks!

Uberjumper, I am indeed very well aware of your fix It's just the very 'quick and dirty' nature of it that makes me feel uneasy about buying a top of the line alienware based upon it, lol. Take, for example, the above quote that was posted not two days after your fix

Don't get me wrong, your fix is a godsend!! It's just...not something I would knowingly put myself in a position where I'd be forced to use it, lol. I hope you understand, because I really do appreciate what you did.

So with that, I have put this page on my favorites list a few days back http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_100.59.html hoping + waiting to see another date besides jan 31st I of course am (as always) open to any criticisms or what not to my thinking, however...

With two workable fixes (uber's and the graphics card emulation software) plus a post by Buggo saying Relic are looking into the issue I wouldnt let this affect your PC purchasing decisions.

  19. #19
It's not...it's just affecting my PC purchasing TIMING lol...but I suppose I should ask out of fairness, is there any difference in performance/stability with the 3d analyze and/or jumper's fix vs. what we can probably expect from an nVidia fix?

This fix has nothing to do with nvidia. It's a problem with that file I modified.... here let me show you exactly what it does...

This is the relevant portion of the file.

    Code:
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ;
    ;	nVidia
    ;
    begin vendor 0x10DE

    	configfile nvidia.txt'

; disable drivers prior to version 52.16 (previous versions have quirks with directx 9 in win98)

    	begin version 0x0000 0x000D
    		allowdevice 1
    	end
    	begin subversion 0x0000 0x0009
    		allowdevice 1
    	end

    	begin build 0x0000 0x1459
    		allowdevice 1
    	end

    	;	Disabled cards (below min-spec)
    	;	RIVA TNT
    	begin device 0x0020
    		allowdevice 0
    	end
    	;	RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro
    	begin device 0x0028
    		allowdevice 0
    	end
    	;	RIVA TNT2 Ultra
    	begin device 0x0029
    		allowdevice 0
    	end
    	;	Vanta/Vanta LT
    	begin device 0x002C
    		allowdevice 0
    	end
    	;	RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro
    	begin device 0x002D
    		allowdevice 0
    	end
    	;	Aladdin TNT2
    	begin device 0x00A0
    		allowdevice 0
    	end

    	;	NV1x (GeForce 256/2/2mx/4mx)
    	begin device 0x0100 0x01FF
    		allowrgba4np2 0
    		isslowcard 1
    	end

; nvidia genius reused a segment inside the 0x01.. range of ids for the NV43 line
; turn on what has been turned off by previous group of devices for this cards
            ; NV43 Geforce 6200,6600/6610 GT/PCI, Quadro FX540, line
            begin device 0x0140 0x014F
                  isslowcard 0
                  allowrgba4np2 1
                  allowhwtnl 1
            end
    end
The bits I modified are bolded. I changed those three lines to be allowdevice 1 instead of allowdevice 0

Those particular lines are designed to prevent OLDER driver versions from running.

Now, the reason why is the following. Here's a line from my warnings.log file and my 8800.

    19:37:43.38 SPDx9 -- Driver Version Product = 0x0007 Version = 0x000F SubVersion = 0x000B Build = 0x003B (59)

The specific lines in the text file check to ensure that the Version, Subversion and Build are from allowed driver types.

The new nVidia drivers fail to get pass the check for the Version and Subversion portions, as the spdx9_config.txt file doesn't allow for them to run.

So, all I've done is modify the file to allow ALL versions to run.

I suspect the official fix will be to change the range it checks rather than the allow or disallow device, as well as fixing how the game parses the version number.

Here's a line from the warnings.log when the game determines the driver version...

    16:25:34.52 SPDx9 -- Driver Version Product = 0x0007 Version = 0x000F SubVersion = 0x000A Build = 0x2612 (9746)

You can see how the last bit shows the actual version number correctly. But if we compare the new drivers, the last bit totally fails to show the correct driver version.

    19:37:43.38 SPDx9 -- Driver Version Product = 0x0007 Version = 0x000F SubVersion = 0x000B Build = 0x003B (59)

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with the 8800 and nvidia's drivers, it's all Relic. It's totally safe to go out and buy a new rig.

  21. #21
....RELIC has to make the 8800 + vista compatible, NOT nVidia??? How did I get that impression, then?? Wow...

...well shoot, then. Now I'm even more uncertain about this... No guarantee at all that this fix would be in by next patch and the patch AFTER that...well, we could be talking summer 2007 here. Man, if this was some $2000 computer I was planning on buying instead of a $6000 comptuer I might feel safer about this, but....

Sigh...well, maybe I will--because i really REALLY want to now lol---could you guys just tell me like, how WELL DoW runs on either of the 2 workarounds? (jumper's fix and the 3d analyze) Thing is that once I get this new computer I can't go back to my old since it's going to my pops, so I want to be sure I'm not walking into a terribly sucky situation fps/graphical glitch speaking or anything.

So, anyone with experience w/either of those 2 (those who actually use it, preferably) workarounds able to tell me how WELL they work, in as much detail as you can?

The fix works perfectly for me-- no glitches whatsover.

I've got an 8800 GTX with Vista RTM.

    Netsurfer:

The 8800 IS already compatible with the game. It's just that the DRIVER version numbers were not understood by the game.

It works fine once the game thinks that the driver version is a valid one.

There will be more tweaks coming for nVidia's drivers, and inevitable tweaks to Relic's game engines (especially DX10 type stuff for Vista and Company of Heroes).

You can't go wrong buying an 8800 and a Vista Rig, the card works for Relic's recent games (I've not tried Homeworld, Impossible Creatures, or Homeworld 2 yet).

    You're welcome.

    Uber:

Crystal clear Thank you! As far as DoW is concerned, now that I know how much of a switch-flipping problem it's nature is based on what you just said, I have marked it off in my mind as a go for purchasing a computer

...unfortunately I can't tell you I'll be buying mine right away, as a result God I'd love to, and I hate to burst your bubble, but sure enough, just a few hours ago I found out the next game on my list (City of Heroes/Villains) is having issues of its own for the 8800 GTX + Vista!! See http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showf...&fpart=21&vc=1 if you wish.

I'm sure WoW works fine (though I should check...) but after that I need to double check on Civ4 as well...possibly even Unreal 2 XMP. Man, anyone know where I can find some updated PC game compatibility lists for Vista?? I've scanned some sites with no to little luck the past few days

Interesting - I'm using a 2 year old comp AMD AthlonX64 3200 and have an ATI 9800 card running the latest 7.1 drivers and i kept getting spooge errors. This fix worked for me too.

mopitup: I suspect that your PC may also have an onboard graphics card which the game is (was) detecting and setting off the error. A dxdiag would confirm this.

What TBS indicated... you likely have an onboard nVidia Graphics Card as well. The only thing I changed in that file was related to nVidia cards.

If you do have an onboard nVidia card, you should be also able to disable it in your bios.

I may well be stupid - but the one thing i am sure of is i dont have an nvidia card or graphics - here is a dxdiag - btw if i do have some form of legacy graphics enabled - please please tell me how to turn it off - games and graphics currently give me no end of grief. I am currently struggling with F.E.A.R. too.

Interesting - your PC doesnt have any onbord graphics (at least, none that are active).

If you are having graphics problems then I suggest updating your motherboard drivers and then doing a clean reinstall of the graphics drivers (uninstall the current ones, use drivercleaner to eliminate them entirely, then redownload them from ATI and install).

    @netsurfer:

As far as I can tell netsurfer the 8800 GTX is not yet really running smoothly. Old games wont run most of the time (could also be vista)
Serious Sam crashes and Worms just shows weird colours.
Also with Neverwinter Nights 2 my minimap and map stay complety black or have weird colours.
These are minor issues though. The thing that really bugs me is that even Oblivion and need for Speed Carbon wont run 100% perfect. (on highest setting of course).
They "stutter" sometimes.. which really should not happen with my rig.

I dont think that Vista and nvidia bring out 100% of the card atm.
A new driver version was just released 100.64. Havent tried it yet and I think that it just fixes some Quake 4 issue. (yeeh :P) ...

So if you still have a good rig .. wait a month more and save yourself a little money

    @buggo
Thank you so much and your company for looking into this minor issue =]

Wait mopitup, which "fix" worked for you? The file I added or something else?

Hi guys, just a little update:

There is an official fix for this being put in the next patch. Uberjumper's fix is 100% safe so thanks Uber, and hopefully everyone can use this in the meantime.

Also, to get the patch to work when it comes out, you will have to download it, revert any changes made to the drivers/*.* files, and then apply the patch.

In other words, we must undo Uber's fix or that emulation thing by the time 1.2 comes out?

...unfortunately I can't tell you I'll be buying mine right away, as a result God I'd love to, and I hate to burst your bubble, but sure enough, just a few hours ago I found out the next game on my list (City of Heroes/Villains) is having issues of its own for the 8800 GTX + Vista!!

WoW and Civ4 work fine on my Vista 64 + 8800GTS rig.

Netsurfer: you would have to undo Uber's fix.

The emulation thing (probably) doesnt change any of DoW's files so you simply wouldnt need to use it any more post-patch.

@TBS No - I didnt think it had - if it has any they are Uli/Ali cos its an old K8ComboZ board by Asrock - OK but not brill - and probably not enabled until I pull the AGP card. Motherboard drivers and chipset drivers are hard to come by for this card but I think I have the most recent. As far as the rest of your graphics advice - I have just done all that and still have probs with F.E.A.R. with the ati2mtag file failing to load its library, resulting in a reboot. My psu is 440watt - so I dont think thats the problem - and the bios on this card dont allow me to adjust the voltage to the card upwards - which appears to help some people who have had this problem. So I'm still a bit stuck on that.

@Uber Jumper - I had been looking for a fix for a while - could see it was the config file that was causing the problem - even tried rewriting the spdx9_config.txt myself - nothing seemed to be working - I googled the problem - found this thread - thought wtf - and tried it - so it has to be your fix. If you would like me too - i will reinstall the original - and post the warnings log - iirc what it is called

@Everybody else - sorry for the thread hijack attempt

Dude.... Uber...you are a friggin life saver and a genius for this fix. I have been all over trying to fix this and you got a simple easy fix.......If you were a girl I would you kiss you!.

I am in a serious Dark crusade clan and havent been able to play on my main rig now since I put the 8800 GTS in on Vista.

    Man thanks a ton...it worked like a charm !!!!!

Dredknot or others, how much better does the game perform on these 'kickarse' rigs using this fix? (I want to see some frames per second numbers! )

Dawn of War was released 2 and a half years ago, these PCs should be complete overkill for it (I run it on high settings on my 3 1/2 year old PC). You should be asking about how brand new games run on them.

if you tell me how i capture the FPS .. I would gladly help you

Edit.. I just did that with FRAPS *duh*

And actually i have constatly 60FPS no matter how much is on the screen and how many people run around ... With 1280*1024 (max res od my tft) and everything on max

So as stated above.. might not be the best game to test your new rig with ...
I can offer you to test ... Oblivion or Neverwinter Nights 2 or Need for Speed Carbon I donno what ..

  43. #43
You mean it doesn't skyrocket to 100 fps at least or some such?? I would think it would see some sort of improvement...

    surfer dude........

I dont have any FPS numbers but I'll tell you this..........I have everything maxed out and the graphics are so crisp and fast...its almost too fast. When you shift build say with Space marines....the buildings drop from the sky immediately...........like a lightning bolt. the textures are real deep and look so real. I think however you would achieve this in any SLI config say with a 7900 series card too. as far as any further graphic enhancement it would probably only come with a direct X 10 updated instructions built into the game engine like in Company Of heroes, which by the way is unreal with directx 10. Now that looks stunning compared to the directx 9. Im waiting for Supreme commander which also has direct X 10 support.

    Hope this helps.....

Thanks Über, sad someone off the forums has to make things work while the dev's say things like "Faulty DirectX install, your video card isnt supported (while we have the newest cards" BTW FU Relic support ^.^. All my help obtained here ever was from random people, never from you.

The fix didn't work for me. I am also run vista 32bit home premium with a nVidia 8800 also with the Spooge error (my favourite computer error ever).

Anyway, I put in Uber's fix (thanks for the time and effort Uber, I won't hold the fact you live in Surrey against you ) and I still get the same result. The graphics tester works, but the game immediately fails with the er Spooge error.

Have I missed something? I confirmed I have the correct version by check Uber's posted changes against what's in my current file.

Buggo (Relic community rep) has already stated that an official fix will be in the next patch - when the patch is released be sure to undo uber's change before patching else the patcher will probably complain.
