Try uninstalling it yes, when you reboot it should prompt to re-install. At the end of it, it should report the correct video card in the device manager/display properties if it's installed correctly.

You can totally avoid the need for this file and modifications if you manually download and install the patch/es for the game here. If you need further assistance, don't hesitate in asking.

The patches only fix the issue for Dark Crusade, not DoW/WA.

As to a step by step guide...I'm not sure how to break "put it in the directory" into more steps - what exactly are you doing and where are you running into difficulty?

Unfortunatly I've very much looked forward to finally playing DoW for the first time on my new laptop and I got all three of the games just so I could get that stupid spooge error! My laptop has vista and the Nvidia graphics card. I did what uber said to do on the first page but nothing has changed. I still get the spooge error!

If I can't fix this then I will just wipe the OS and use xp instead.

I think this whole thing is pretty silly given new cards will definitely support the features the game wants to use and nobody will be running windows 98 anymore, perhaps someone should just modify uber's patch and make it allow everything under the sun.

To get the others to work you need to apply uber's fix from the beginning of this thread - make sure you are changing the right file in the right place.

You are trying to apply the patch and it is locking up during the patch process? That is probably Vista's security being a pain - make sure you are logged on as administrator and maybe try disabling the UAC.

UAC is Vista's 'User Account Control', which can interfere with programs you're trying to run and/or install.

Start Menu > Control Panel > User Accounts

Select the Account you want to disable UAC on

Hit the linkbutton bottom left 'Turn UAC on/off on this Account'.


To patch up the game, you would be best off simply downloading the patches off the internet and installing them. Once you are upto date (v1.20) you can play the game as it fixes any Spooge issues.

I've been having the same problems under Vista. However, vanilla DoW runs fine as well as the unpatched version of DC. Once I patch it, it goes to the loading screen and crashes to the desktop. Think your fix will help me as well?

Ok the fix didnt work on my laptop so DoW, winter assault and dark cursade don't work. I get the error. I downloaded the new demo and this works. Any reason why this does and not the others?
I was told by tech support at THQ that that they won't run in Direct x 10 (was pretty much told in the email that they would not be supporting direct x 10). I have updated my drivers multiple times.

EDIT: A buddy of mine was able to bypass the Hp driver update and get the current nvidia one on there. It all works now.

Edit: Oops, sorry. Followed a link here that showed only one post. Hadn't seen it was a full-fledged thread.

Edit 2: After having a look at the file, I simply removed all the detailed handling of different graphic cards. Works fine. I wrote all of it up under Solving the "spooge driver" issue with Dawn of War using VMWare Fusion or Bootcamp. Maybe that is quicker than searching through the whole thread.

Hey, I know plenty of people have come along for help on this issue, but I'm a little stuck. I'm trying to run DOW on Vista with a GeForce 9800GT, I'm getting the spooge problem and I've tried the spdx9 fix, and it's still not working. Could someone help me?

btw I'm not very computer savvy, so if things could be explained as simply as possible that would be great

According to your dxdiag your graphics card is not installed at all, which is why the spdx9 fix hasn't worked.

Get the card installed and you should be good to go. You should also install Service Pack 1 for Vista (visit windows update).

Well as far as I know my card is installed correctly, I needed to install the drivers to get my moniter to work correctly... so I don't know why it's not showing up in the dxdiag... :S

ok, do the following:

Step 1: go to windows update and get VIsta SP1, followed by any other updates for Vista.

Step 2: go here and download the drivers for your card, just save the file to your desktop for later.

Step 3: go to device manager and uninstall your graphics card - its not in the dxdiag so its not correctly installed. You may need to reboot.

Step 4: install the graphics card using the drivers you downloaded earlier, you may need another reboot.

That should fix you up - make a new dxdiag and see if your card appears correctly, if it does you should also be able to play DoW.

The problem is that the driver version is not recognized by a simple file.

I've attached a file that you can place in the \drivers sub directory. You'll need to rename the existing file (after unsetting the read only property) in order to save it.

Note, this is a quick and dirty fix, and it will allow the game to try and start up on driver versions that are NOT supported.

Oh, and one more thing, you'll want to run the graphics config tool after you put that file in place.
