"Celtic fans right now sit in silence and watch, and hope that the damage doesn't get any worse from this Graham Carey free kick. Away by Wilson. Teale. Still options waiting in the middle for St. Mirren...OH, AND THEY HAVE ANOTHER ONE! It's stunning! It's absolutely stunning at Hampden park! And it's Steven Thompson, who scores his thirteenth goal of the season, and that might just be the goal that takes St. Mirren into the league cup final!" - 27/01/2013
Sorry for the double post but i don't see the good in editing my previous one.
I'm about Half way through "Only In Death" and it is amazing! It's completely different just about all the other books. Its incredibly tense and Action Packed like "Necropolis" but is full of twists and turns like "Sabbat Martyr" and "Guns Of Tanith".
Its also incredibly disturbing. I read it very late a night in my bed with the lights dimned and i'm literaly crapping myself reading it. I'll post a fuller one once im finished but its well worth the read!

Sounds lovely. Can't wait to read it.. though it will probably take some time to get there.. just need to get all the previous books and read them.. although i've read some of them already i must admit, borrowed from a friend, how i got into it. Can't wait to reread necropolis
Though i have recently read through the caiphas cain series, which i found to be quite good. Can be recommended.
And Dark apostle i just read through a couple of days ago, quite a lot of action and blood and gore.. had me enthralled for a while.
and last i've read Rebel Winter, an okay novel albeit short.
Yeah thanks Rob.
It's very good so far. Read some last night and i've still got the shivers just thinking about some of the stuff in it.
I swept the shelves of a bookstore of all its Horus Heresy Books and i am busy reading them now. Finished False Gods/Galaxy in Flames and now on Fulgrim. Forgot about Horus Rising but i will leap at it after Fulgrim. And i got descent of the angels; seems abit thin when compared to other books.has anybody got descent of angels yet? I know its out now
And would someone enlighten me on why the Horus Heresy Artbooks are so expensive? The costs were shocking in comparison to the novels
Blard for the Lard God!

Each individual volume of the artbooks cost fifteen pounds when I purchased them - which is hardly a Faberge egg, in all honesty, and quite understandable when they're glossy, heavily-illustrated, full-colour quartos. I thought that it was quite reasonable - and the Collected Visions Compendium which collates all four volumes is only thirty pounds itself, which is really quite affordable.

Wow thats almost 90 dollars here. But still i've seen some of the images and they are really detailed but is it just a book of pure pictures or does it provide some level of insight into the heresy such as the horus heresy line does?
#259
While the quality of the writing isn't superb - it's there to convey the essentials of background detail first and foremost, and conceiving captivating literature wasn't a priority - the artbooks do provide a potted history of the Horus Heresy in various box-outs, subheadings, segments fo flavour text, and a couple of short stories. Many of the revisions to and expansions of events during the Heresy that we're now seeing detailed in the novel series were first mentioned in the artbooks.
I m enlightened. Thanks Frazer![]()
Has anyone read "Let the Galaxy Burn", that massive compilations of W40k short stories book? I just want to know if its worth having before buying it.
Damn. I saw a copy of the Heresy Artbook compendium for sale in a megabookstore in Portland, OR when I was there this summer for only 25 USD. Didn't even open it. Trust me, I'm kicking myself for it right now... >![]()
Got Pre-Heresy?
I've bought and read Let the Galaxy Burn. Overall, the short stories are pretty terrible, with the exception of the one by Abnett, which is more of a side story for his Eisenhorn series. I'd recommend just going to your local bookstore on your lunch break or after school and read it one story at a time. Not really worth buying.
I don't know is this the best place to put it but...i have noticed some facts in the novels being distorted.
In Fulgrim: There were Land Speeders mentioned in the Emperor's Children attack on Laer and wasn't the Land Speeder STC found after the Heresy?
In Horus Rising: Terminators had Storm Bolters, i had the impression only Combi Bolters were avaliable then.
Someone illuminate me on these points? Or is it because the writers simply had not got their fluff completely right?
#265
Even the best BL authors will tend to take some liberties with the fluff. Power Armour and Bolters being purely STC designs, Storm Bolters being prominent prior to Heresy, etc. are all examples of authors distorting, ignoring, or being unaware of fluff, unless the book was obviously intended to make alterations to that kind of canon (i.e., an entire chapter is dedicated to the pursuit and discovery of the STC template of the Land Speeder).

heh, 'Let the galaxy burn' was probably just a bunch of short stories they had laying around (of course that is what the anthologies are).
Their are a few notable stories, the main ones that come to mind is Graham McNiel’s Snow Dog Character from Warriors of Ultramar, it interesting to see the aftermath of the Tyranid attack.
The other notable story (and my personal favorite, but my opinion is bypass since I really enjoyed the Ravenor Series) is a side story from Dan Abnett's Ravenor Series which takes place before the first Ravenor and explains how Ravenor and the gang met Patience Kys as well as adds a lot of back ground to her character. ( So Jivebologna I hate to correct you but I must it was from Ravenor not the Eisenhorn Series, granted to the are more or less linked since Ravenor was Eisenhorn's Interrogator)
The other stories involve anything and everything, some of the stories are from a few of the older anthology books that are no longer available (such as Deathwing and Crucible of War, Words of Blood), so if you have read those you really isn’t missing too much.

Fifteen Hours by Mitchel Scanlon
ISBN: 1-84416-231-1
Synopsis: For the Imperial Guard, training lasts 4 months, Planetary Transport takes 7 weeks and the life expectancy... Fifteen Hours.
Review: This little novel, coming in at a mere 254 pages follows the young life of a fresh Guardsmen conscript. Following a request for an Imperial Guard detachment to quell a rebellion within a PDF held world, Jumal IV is required by Imperial Code to provide 200 troops to donate to the Galactic War effort. Arvin Larn, a young farmer on the Agri-world of Jumal IV living with his family of Father, Mother and Sisters is pulled from his comfort zone by the conscription decree.
The novel follows him through training and his first deployment. True to their reputation, things don't quite go according to plan and Larn is thrown into a situation which will push his beliefs and mental integrity to the maximum.
Constantly learning the art of the Guardsman, way past his 4 months training, he learns that the textbook material is alot different to frontline life.
Teamed up with Veterans who have lived in this very frontline for 10years of their lives Larn makes new warrior friends, and enemies.
A brilliant little book - that you will find both inspirational and insightful. A first hand look at the Imperial Guard behind the scenes in Boot Camp and even the mental process and anguish of the selection process leading up to being requisitioned.
Contained within the book is fluff based upon : Imperial Code, Commissars, Frontline Troops, Artillery during the war effort, Command Structure, Lasgun technology, Guardsman equipment, Training, Guardsman deployment, Imperial Conscription, Administratum Errors, Imperial Guard Night Ops, Orks, Ork Mad Dok, Gretchin, Imperial Medicae Troops, Battlefield Practices and Techniques
Conclusion: A brilliant book that is so small, you could read it in one sitting - trust me, you will find it difficult to put it down once you have started! I used to avoid Guardsman books after reading Caves of Ice, and not finding that particular novel appealing, but this book really made me appreciate the Imperial Guard, and granted them a rennaissance in my eyes.
Recommended to all 40K Fluff-monkeys, even those who don't like the Imperium.

I agree, Fifteen Hours has all the existential absurdity of a post-WWI play but in Warhammer 40k form! What's not to like?

Descent of Angels by Mitchel Scanlon
ISBN: 1-84416-508-6
Synopsis: The warriors of Caliban are about to get a very large surprise which will change their lives and their planet forever.
Review: The sixth book in the Horus Heresy epic series focuses upon the dawning of the Dark Angels chapter. Don't be confused by the title as I was - it doesn't cover the splitting of the chapter with them falling to Chaos, but infact starts earlier than that, serving to enlighten the reader of the arduous life prior to the Heresy coming about.
Focussing in upon one such warrior, Zahariel and his cousin, Nemiel, the book goes on to detail the sacrifice that the knight-warriors make, and the many trials they must endure to be deemed worthy by their Primarch, Lion El'Johnson.
The book details the world of Caliban, a deathworld, and it's many strange and wonderful inhabitants from the Watchers in the Dark through to the Great Beasts of Caliban in this epic journey back to the birth of the Dark Angels
Contained within the book is fluff based upon: Dark Angels, Daemons, Assassination plots, World Compliance, Librarians, Lion El'Johnson, The Emperor, The Legions, Caliban, The Watchers in the Dark, Chaos, The Great Beasts, Luther, (Lord) Cypher, Knightly Order, Space Marine training, Deathworld, Primarch ability, Astartes Interrogation Techniques, Psychic Powers
Conclusion: A very different story to the earlier 5 books in the series, this one focuses upon backstory rather than the Heresy, but as always, if you read close enough, you will see that the seeds of heresy are sown even so far back as the birth of a Chapter. An obvious recommendation, if you want to have rounded knowledge of the history of the Dark Angels chapter.
Thanx for the review GroundZero, it's a good thing IMO.
I will put Fifteen Hours on my to read list, the HH books are on it by default.
Deus Encarmine and Deus Sanguinius by James Swallow
ISBN: 1-84416-154-4 and ISBN: 1-84416-155-2 repectively.
Synopsis: An ancient weapon of untold power is returned to the Blood Angels Chapter, rumoured to have been wielded by Sanguinius himself, a weapon that was forged in the hands of the God-Emperor himself. Such power could change the galaxy - for good or ill however...
Review: A quest to find the holy artifact forged by the Emperor himself and wielded by Sanguinius has returned victorious. The victorious expedition forces are united with another Blood Angels force on a Shrine world which has received unusual visitors.
A general plot turns thicker and is laced with deception and mystery as the story unfolds, stretching back to the Maelstrom itself.
A major dilemma seen by the lead character, Rafen, leads to a conflict that runs alot deeper than between Bolter and Chainsword, but threatens to displace his beliefs and even the fate of the entire Galaxy. Forced to be very selective in his beliefs and training, he must attempt to rectify the situation, despite the risk of splitting the entire chapter into 2.
Such conflict and threat can only be managed by the head commanders of the Blood Angels, and when word reaches Baal, Dante and Mephiston are stoked up into action, seeing the potential end result for what it was.
Contained within the book is fluff based upon: Blood Angels, Inquisition, Dante, Mephiston, Tycho, World Bearers, The Maelstrom, Tzeentch, Emperor, Sanguinius, Librarians, Gene-seed, TechMarines, Thunderhawk Gunships, Sanguinary Priests, Greater Daemons, Chaos, Lemartes, Corbulo, Cultists
Conclusion: Fantastic novel double-bill, it really makes you appreciate the situation and the Blood Angels, as well as the forces that drive Chaos. Be sure to pay close attention to the Librarian storylines as I particularly found their powers and clarity to be exceptionally written. Highly recommended pair of books - be sure to buy both at the same time however, as the story flows instantly from one book to the next.

I'm so annoyed, I think I have every w40k book available. I'm sitting here twiddling thumbs waiting for the new HH book or GK books to come out, anyone got a release date for either?
Don't know those specific ones; I know a few upcoming books are slated for July 2008.

Bah february and march, ages away
Thanks anyway back to re-reading.
HORUS HERESY SERIES: DESCENT OF THE ANGELS BY MITCHEL SCANLON
When i picked up this book, my mind was instantly grabbed by the fact that the enigmatic history of the Dark Angels would finally come to light; the betrayals, the shame, the lament and the cumulating hunt to hunt down the Fallen to redeem the honor of the First Legion.
However, this was not to be; something i shall elaborate upon later.
Starting on the very basic of the Dark Angels' humble beginnings on Caliban, the story progresses mainly through the eyes of young aspirant Zahariel, who aspires to be a knight of the Order. Passing through the various trails and tribulations, the young warrior finally slays a great beast and ascends to a full knight. The Order then embark on their final mission to rid Caliban of the beasts; by terminating a final resistance force from a knight order attempting to preserve the beasts. When the mission ends in spectacular victory, the Order leave only a few beasts in the wild which are finally hunted down. On such a hunting mission, the Emperor of Mankind arrives at Caliban. Zahariel soon becomes a member of the Emperor's Astartes as the First Legion is given to the control of the Lion. The Dark Angels proceed to join the Great Crusade, illuminating the lost worlds of the Emperor's wisdom and liberating xeno-dominated ones. Finally coming to the world of Sarosh, a world seemingly wanting to join the Imperium with open minds and eagerness for compliance, events take on a darker note. Though welcoming the Imperials like long lost brothers, the world's compliance was not assured for there were many delays; which the inefficient bureaucracy blamed on its rowdy structure but promises to deliver itself to the Emperor's rule as soon as possible. Disturbing findings probe the Dark Angels but soon a meeting is organized aboard one of the Imperial ships. The fellow humans met the Dark Angels and a feast was organized in honor of the world's high exalter. When the shuttle of the "visitors" turns out to be a massive nuclear missile, Luther finds himself sundered between power and brotherhood, but finally choosing the latter, the Dark Angels aboard the ship were left unharmed. When an invasion was finally launched, a Warp entity was discovered to be the root of the Saroshis' unwillingness to conform to Imperial demands. Slaying the daemon, the Lion finally sends back a heartbroken Luther back to Caliban...where the seeds of dissent would finally result in blossoms of Astartes blood when the once great hero of Caliban turns his face from the Lion, from the Emperor, to the darkest forces of Chaos.
The book ends unexpectedly, for there was no diving into the dark treachery of Luther or more revelation of the ending of the battle. Even fans of the mystery shrouded Cypher would find themselves disappointed for the character remains in the realms of mystery and the unknown. Still, Mitchel Scanlon does a great job on the description of the battles; from slaying great beasts to combating a foul daemon, one does not find lackluster writing in the book at all. The book sheds some light on the Order and its functionaries as well as allowing the reader to witness the first seeds of dissent planted in Luther when the Lion denies the once celebrated warrior of glory, power and finally the honor to battle at his side. Even the fact that Luther was not a true Astartes would finally bear deadly fruit. Still, the book fails to illuminate the entire course of the Dark Angels' history; something i was particularly disappointed on. Nonetheless, this book would suffice for a decent read for any Warhammer 40 000 fan.

There you go.It's called The Killing Ground, and it's released in June for the UK, July for the rest of us. It's apparently a direct sequel to Dead Sky, Black Sun.
when is Storm of Iron being re-released? I definetely want to read that.
on a related note, I finished Only In Death last night and I have to say, it was fantastic. Without giving away too much, its very creepy (The Ghosts are haunted by their pasts, literally), and very brutal (the Blood Pact lay siege to their position, an abandoned fort). I'd rate it my #2 favorite Ghost book. Its all the way up there with Necropolis and Sabbat Martyr.
Just to throw it out there, the release date outside the UK is stated in the "( )" which is typically a month after it is released in the UK.
I must so, this years highlights are really quite interesting Uriel Ventris is returning, the long awaited third novel of Ben Counter's Grey Knight's series, and a new set of stories involving the Blood Angels, I hope it is as good as the previous one. We will also get see Sandy Mitchell start a new series (a well needed break from Ciaphas Cain)
I have a question about nids. I am not TT player but I plan to buy their codex and Imperial Armour vol.4 - The Anphelion Project. could someone please tell me if there are any other books that will give me information about Tyranid race?
There's also Xenology, which features a section on Tyranids, including dissection diagrams of various creatures. They're not the main focus of the book, but it's still a good read nonetheless.
thanks! I will check it

re-release of Storm of Iron
Just read the old edition of Storm Of Iron a few weeks ago while on holiday and i loved it so much. Great book. Full of fortresses. It realy reminded me of some of the Sharpe books for some reason.
Guys, could someone summarize me the events of Ravenor and Ravenor Returned?
Im about to start Ravenor Rogue, but I almost forgot what happened in the old books...could you help me?

A heads up for all of you:
The index found on post #2 of this thread now contains all of the indexed reviews from the original Best Books thread, now located in the Black Library. So, if you look through the index for book reviews (and please do, because I've put quite a bit of work into it), you will now be directed both to the reviews in this thread and the ones in the old thread.
I will soon be updating the index with the rest of this thread's reviews, and then we'll be completely up to date.

Warning: Chronic Post Editor
McNeill has announced he finished the book, but I guess the eidting will take some time. He says he's left a loophole if he ever wants to publish a fifth Ultramarines book. I'm therefore guessing that the two Marines are getting back and surviving.
I have a strong suspicion that this was what the book was supposed to be, but the author got a bit carried away with his tales of the Knights of Caliban, and found himself staring a looming deadline and a need to wrap things up and get some proper Space Marines in, hence the rather rushed final section with the Saroshi, and nothing after that...HORUS HERESY SERIES: DESCENT OF THE ANGELS BY MITCHEL SCANLON

I was rather annoyed with the book, as it didn;t really have anything to do with the Heresy at all, all taking place during what must have been the early days of the great crusade.
Black Templars are my second favourite faction [after Tyranids] and I need your advice - are 'Crusade of the Armageddon' and 'Conquest of the Armageddon' books worth to buy?
I don't think I've every came across any of the BT books myself so if you can get a hold of them go ahead and give a try.
I have heard that their are some very unfluffy parts of the book, but since I haven't read them, I can't validate that (or write a review on it) so if you are able to gets your hands on them and you have ran out of 40K books to read (as I have) go ahead and give them a whirl, I would be interested to hear how they are.
I was looking the BL website trying to find out when the 40k book comes out, and I stumbled upon the cover for the DoW omnibus, now correct me if I am wrong but their was no mention of the Tau in any of the DoW books was there?
DoW: SM(Blood Ravens), Orks, Eldar(Biel-Tan), CSM, Inquisition(DH)
DoW Ascension: SM, Eldar, Necrons, IG
DoW Tempest: SM, CSM (Thousand Sons), Eldar
Sure the Tau were in the computer game but why would it be on the cover of the book, I am just interested to know how that got threw the BL, unless I am wrong of course in which case let know lol.
Well, i suppose its just a cover art and perhaps the Tau commander was there just to "beautify" the entire volume (missing a Tau on a Dawn of War book does seem weird when the other races are present). And most people will probably think the book is in co-relation to the game expansion events and buy it...but i daresay disappointment rates would be high.
I do agree with you Spinarx, however not much from the book correlates with the games, except for the first novel (Which I think is the best out of the three), unless Goto is able to really tie this in with the Soul Storm ( I kind of hope Soul Storm is the last DoW game, it time to move on to DoW 2 already lol), I think the Dawn of War novels are a loss cause.
The way Tempest ended and judging by the Demo mission from Soul Storm it sounds like Goto could never tie the fourth DoW novel in with Soul Storm, but hey he just might try.
and was it just me but I was very disappointed with the Intro for the Soul Storm demo, I really hope that is not the final take.... The IG commander really did not sound passionate at all, and that Karskin looking at the SoB like some drunk was embarrassing. The Karskin are the best the IG have to offer, and are depicted a lot better than that. (Reference the Eisenhorn trilogy or Caves of Ice.)
Guys quick question. Hopefully this is the right thread for it but I'm planning on buying the books around the Horus Heresy series and I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could point me to the order to get them in? Just a little confused on them.
I also only recently got into the Gaunt's Ghost series (Waiting on the Saint now) and I have thoroughly loved it. Granted there were a few times when 100 gaurd were fighting thousands and come out with little more than a scratch that made me blink but the everything else about it was just great. Just thought I'd drop in my own few cents.
