seen the date of that artical?
THAT was the reason behind the impromtu BF1942 patch when EA had actaully stopped supporting the game

Would you mind summing up what we're being directed to instead of us having to read the entire article?
Gamespy are a bunch of liars. That's all I can sum up.
and they don't care about gamers rights
Basically the guy finds bugs in gamespy's software for them, and they don't do a damn thing about the bug reports he sends them.
Then they send him a Cease and Desist for... something, it was pretty hard to read, but at the same time still use his stuff to support their claims (despite his stuff being free shareware).
And they claim to be interested in supporting their gamers but really aren't doing jack shit.

So, err, Gamespy is buggy shit, and it doesnt get better because they dont try to make it better. Any more news from last year? Is anyone surprised?
If you can make money without doing much there is no reason to improve.

He found a bug in their software (not hard) that allowed it to be used as a ddos tool.
They didnt care, so he released it to bugtraq and they hit him with a DMCA takedown, claimed they were keeping their users secure and eventually fixed it.
Gamespy are a huge corporate monster. Epic even once called the 'corporate community killers' for their underhanded tactics at the original planetunreal (now beyondunreal) and what they did to seriously!

I tried reading through that....too long given the poor grammar and such. However from what I did pick up, I'm not surprised with Gamespy's actions as..well..it's Gamespy. They are quite possibly the worst thing to ever happen to gaming, as they just seem to perpetuate mindless reviews and crappy software to make a buck or two. It's disgusting really.
Disquisting but legal, & that's how they get away with still doing it.

I don't understand why why no one is doing anything about it.It is disgusting how they getaway with it.
Is there no other way we can play online against each other so we dont need gamespy?
yeah its called Lan gaming .No gamespy to mess things up hehe ( i might be wrong if anyone says so feel free to correct me)
Hamachi![]()
Then why dont we all switch to using this Himachi? Or is that to much effort?
GS attempts to provide a method to find other (anon) gamers so you don't have to pre-arrange. GS in theory is fine for the casual gamer
Problem is GS is shite and they don't maintain it
what is needed is a kind of BitTorrent game server system... When you run a torrent program it first advertises itself and after abt a min you are away of all the seeders,leachers,trackers... all with no centralised server, ie no single point of failure as exists with the present method of LameSpy (even relic's and blizzards new imporved way is still liable to outage)
The problem is, most people don't know many DoW Hamachi communities. We should start a Relic Forums server for Hamachi.
It's really not difficult to write a lobby system. And whoever has the spending power to support these forums with bandwidth and processing power would almost definitely be able to support a custom lobby system. And if we were to start an anti-gamespy petition, I'm pretty sure that Relic would not use Gamespy in future games.
Out of interest, does COH use Gamespy?

Well then I suppose the problem has already been solved, I guess it's just too late in DoW's product lifecycle to support a new lobby system within the product. It should really have come with Dark Crusade. Too bad.
A Hamachi community server isn't a bad idea in that case.
Hopefully there is a time frame for the contract Relic has with Gamespy, then when it reaches the dead line Relic could just break the ties it has with Gamespy and start their own servers.
Im deffinatley up for this Himachi![]()
Can someone give a little bit more information about it?
Alternatively you may want to join a DoW IRC community. DoWpro has a triving one and there is also one for DoW itself. I know hanger-8 has one on his website (link in my sig). I've been using DoWpro IRC to find good players to have good games via hama. So much better than GS bullpoopie.
Hamashi is a freeware VPN, very simple to use even through both hardware and software firewalls. It does not slow down the connection. It just works. The only way I play DoW multi i through Hamachi.
MAKE LOVE, NOT SPAM!

Ok enough with the gamespy bashing. There's not much to discuss here, and it's not at all related to DoW. Yes the gamespy protocol is really buggy at times. Yes they're a big company and are out to make money. No, we really don't need to go through with this again.
