    Relic DC Mod Tools 1.2

This basically is a repackage of the DOW tools with all of the updates and workarounds.

-All 1.20 Lua files are included for balance changes

    - World Builder will work with DC 1.20 (the old one likely had to be moved to a different location with 1.4x DLLs from DoW)

    - All required DLL’s (i.e. DXTC.dll) are included in the proper places

    - Two new tools are included, Package Viewer and a C# Chunky Viewer

    - AE has a start up dialogue that allows you to load a sub-set of the data files (for faster loading) – you have to be careful to not edit dependencies on data you did not load. E.g. if you didn’t load any weapons then be careful to not edit weapon fields for entities.

    - Small little fixes to the tools made during the development of Dark Crusade.

Required: Dark Crusade 1.20 – this tool set will not work with DoW (WA) or Dark Crusade before version 1.20.

We're looking at the mod manager issues and it looks like it will need to be fixed in a patch, which will likely not happen for a few months. We are releasing a patch in the next month or so, but it is to fix some connectivity and localization issues. The main patch will be later.

New Mod Tools? And a new AE? And... other stuff?

    Now I can die happy!

Or, you know... not. That'd kinda' defeat the purpose.

Thank you, Buggo, just as I was getting back into coding Now maybe I can finally start using the AE (of course requiring that this new version actually likes me, unlike the other versions ).

This is one reason I keep coming back to DoW... the wonderful support that Relic give. I bought the original DoW on day 1 of release and continue to enjoy playing it unlike other games that are more eye candy than fun (C&C3 anyone).

Mind you I shouldn't be surprised because I've played with Homeworld 1 and 2 as well and they are just as well supported. Once I get my new PC (eventually) I'll be doing the same with SupCom and CoH and Corsix wonderful ModStudio supports CoH too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

I uploaded a mirror, and the 1.41 art samples for those who don't have Dawn of War installed to install the 1.41 mod tools to get the art samples in the first place.

PM me if either link is bad, especially the art samples (not sure I got everything that was needed, just grabbed the DataSrc folder).

Say thanks to everyone at Relic who helped do this Buggo, especially George, whoever he may be

    Without Buggo's bugging, it wouldn't have happened, but George "If-I-knew-a-second-name-I-would-give-it-but-I-cannot-find-it-in-any-manual" from Relic has put together a very good bag of goodies Three minor things;
    * ScarDoc says "API Auto Complete - If the function we are writing exists in the API a list box will appear when you start writing that function with all the possible endings. *NOTE - This feature is not immediately available but will be forthcoming.", the scardoc folder has .API and .PROPERTY files in it which look like SciTE autocomplete files.
    * The readme refers to "C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\" rather than the Dark Crusade default folder
    * The wiki links are to http://www.relic.com/rdn/wiki rather than http://wiki.relicrank.com/index.php?title=DoW

  13. #13
It's probably better to link to the old wiki, the new one barely has 30 pages dedicated to DOW and the old one still needs that information copying over. Having both links might have been better though

I haven't had time yet to see if any of the new tools had installation instructions, but I had created a set of instructions for the old 1.1 DC Mission editor hoping to save some people a couple of hours of grief trying to figure out how to save their games.

I assume that some of the same information will be useful for the new DC Mission Editor. If not, you can at least look at how to get the DC Mission Editor to make mini-maps for you, as it seems as if some people haven't discovered that nice new feature yet. The 1.1 DC Mission editor was creating a mini-map of what you had on the screen, so if you put the whole playable area on the screen all at once by zooming out, and then saving, it created a matching working mini-map and icon for you for free. Nice!

Anyway, here's the little DC Mission Editor tutorial I put together awhile ago:

    http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=144501

  18. #18
The new tools don't need installation instructions, its a nicer installer like the old tools releases had.

    I forgot to add my notes on my download mirrors I added. I typed it up for the information sticky;

    Dark Crusade Mod tools

Version 1.2: These include all the above items plus some minor additional tools. Will work with the 1.2 patch and the download is an installer. These are only supported under Windows XP (although likely to work under Windows 2000). The .NET framework 2.0 is suggested for one of the tools, but is not needed for the main tools. (Filesize: 12.9 MB, MD5 Hash: 6673A1D05BEC940077794DBD69AA345A)

These however contain no art samples. Art samples are the DataSrc folder in the ModTools folder. I created an archive of the 1.41 art sources for this. Extract it into the DOW: DC ModTools folder. This is good for modellers, animators and FX creators!

Buggo!!!! Wooo!!! C# Chunky Viewer. I love you! That chunky viewer works for CoH too! Finally, I can figure out what those unknowns in chunky headers are and I can learn how Relic handles chunky files. Best 11th of April 2007 present EVER!

Hmmm... seems strange that a relic employee would still be making tweeks to the Dark Crusade Modtools, and at this time of the year?!..., unless theres something I'm completely missing here?

However, The old tools were working moderately fine though..

    Thanks for the update

i dont understand how that seems weird to you, they most likely tweaking everything all the time.

OFF TOPIC: buggo do you know if there is going to be a CoH expansion? russians + other country perhaps

There is a CoH Expancion in the Works, CoH: Opposing Fronts.

    They love us really

When mine installed, I didn't get the usual My_Mod folder, module file and pipeline.ini. Did anyone else lack these? I'm using some existing ones, but I wondered if pipeline.ini in particular was left out by accident?

Yup. Many of us had run across issues with the existing tools, and Buggo has been getting feedback from us for... well, quite a long while now!

This is exactly what the original tools were:
A free set of utilities that the company released for the modding community.
It's like the Geico commercial, with "that announcer guy from the movies":
"Feedback - this time, it's for real!"

I guess I'm not really used to having a games software company looking after it's modding community so well. Although I still dont understand why these tools are only compatible with the new patch...I mean Dark Crusade recieved no engine changes for patch 1.2. Could it be that these tools have been updated for a future Dawn of War project?. Maybe relic have improved the dow engine to mirror its COH rival. I'm only speculating, but its speculation that can be a 'mission possible'.

  30. #30
These tools have barely changed since the original release, I think if they were using newer tools they'd be using CoH-like tools for any new games really.

Except that they made the mod manager work... which is quite important for mod tools don't you think . Out of interest has anyone actually tried these and confirmed they all work yet? I'm loathe to reinstall everything yet again. Is OE / FX editor working properly now?

At least the AE work, that's the only thing I've tried yet. And upon further inspection, the ME seems to work too. The OE/FX I have no idea how to use so I wouldn't know if they work properly or not.

Is it just me, or does AE still not load?

  34. #34
It loads just fine for me, on a slower computer with less RAM it can take upwards of 5 or more minutes to load.

Start it, load the mod you want (or for quicker use, like as in the documentation, you can select a certain selection of files to load) and leave it for a bit.

Sorry, but I can't access this feature. I have installed the new mod tools & the AE itself has not been modified, & the readme files also don't relate either.

How do I get it to work?

I installed the Mod Tools because I wanted a Map Editor, but none of the exe's names hints at such a thing as a Map Editor. Besides, no exe except the "ObjectEditor" actually does anything. The others just create one or two white windows. What did I do wrong? Where's the Map Editor?

/E: Ok, I got the AttributeEditor to work, that's nice to see Still, I only came for a Map Editor

Map Editor is W40kME.exe, a green trim shoulderpad icon with ME on it.

Funnily enough, I can't find it either in my install. Hmm, time to try again.

  39. #39
It also puts a start menu group in so you have shortcuts to all the tools, the map editor is the Mission Editor.

Zany: You must not have the right tools, whenever I click "Open" then select a mod it comes up with the selection thing before it loads anything (and thus you need to choose "Select All" to load everything as normal).

Ok I found it, but it wont open any map, saying the map needed to be in the root directory, but it is. Copying the map to the root folder doesnt change anything, either.

Zany Reaper, try deleting everything in the modtools folder and then reinstall the mod tools. I have a feeling it doesn't overwrite the existing files properly.

I didn't get the option on loading the attibute editor like you and when I deleted and reinstalled it worked.

Well I say worked, I still can't get Attribute Editor to load the luas, it just exits without any warning like it's out of memory or something.

Taliesin, you must save in the correct location depending on what mod you create one for. EG: Choose DXP for dark crusade, and you need to save in D:\Games\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\DXP2\Data\scenarios\mp

I had to delete the old DXP folder in DataGeneric to get the AE working with the new fixes, plus I un-installed all the old tools. In case anyone hasn't tried this.

    Hi All,

If you had an old version of any tools installed, then you need to:

    - back up your MOD data
    - uninstall the old tools
    - install the new tools
    - move your data over to the new location

The installer may have issues with copying files over existing files (as the safe thing to do is not clobber your local data) and thus you should always do a fresh install.

As for the reason behind the tools - there were a few engine level changes for 1.20 features/bug fixes, some extra functionality exposed to the AI, etc.. This is enough to break binary compatibility between the mission editor (map maker) and game. As a result, I packaged up all of the tools into one nice download as a side project.

Some of the tools are in a very rough state and your mileage may vary, but they are what the team used to build the game.
Please note: I am unable to reply to unsolicited PM's due to time constraints. Please post questions in the forums so that everyone can benefit.
