    Just Curious...

How many of you use the bunkering strategy when playing as IG? I am new to playing as them and want to learn how to use them effectively. Is there a better strategy other than bunkering in?

P.S. How many HWTs total do u usually use throughout each game?

any good ig player should bunker.
dont get too many HWT's in the beginging otherwise your econ would be so messed up, i dont even want to think about it.

P.S istead of bunkering, go for a tactica first, then when done give at least three GM squads at least nade launcher.

Bunkering is such a good idea with IG, since the 1.2 path Relic has given them a 25% more damage ratio when inside a bunker, thus improving the guardsman capabilites by a ton. Definatly bunker, I would even go as far to say use bunkers rather than heavy weapons teams (although you can aim with them now).

yea my brother and his friend turtle a lot! hes IG and his friend is a necron player. they bunker in in a bottle neck area in a map and share a spot made for one and they somehow hold out against me (Chaos) and my friends, an ork player and a SM player. VERY FUN takes like 2 hours to win but its some crazy action..lots of dead bodies since the orks base units become free too. God i love Dawn of War

What are bunkers supposed to do about range, though? I have seen rockets, bolters, and FW (and I am sure there are more) easily out range and destroy bunkers. What is effective against that?

You can bunker, but only if you've secured at least 50% of the map.

If by bunkering you mean building an IC somewhere up on the map, and using it sort of like a turret, it's not a bad idea on some maps vs some races.

If by bunkering you mean hiding in your HQ or other buildings in your base - terrible idea only use as a last resort. hiding in base = no map control = you get out-teched and out-massed. There are also too many units (even in lower tiers) that out-range building guns for them to be a real defensive option.

Edit: I don't build more then 1, maybe 2 HWTs. they take too long to build and are such a pain to micro that half the time I don't build any.

I bunker all the time. People say GM do less dmg inside, but IT'S FREE! No one dies! 20 req still adds up. I treat IC's like turrets. Omni-directional medium building turrets. They're great.

By bunkering more like occasional ACTUAL bunkering in, but basically slowly moving and attacking, i.e holding a position from an assault, moving forward. Then slowly getting close enough to a base to let bassies mess it up well to go in for a full on assault.

The downside to a slow march like that is you become very predictable. If your opponent can keep tabs on the composition of your forces, he can effectively counter you. I've turned around more than a few matches by simply throwing GM at my opponent and then retreating once I start to take losses. I do this often enough to keep him focused on anti-GM duties while I bring out something that he doesn't have a counter to.

For example, in several IGs mirrors my opponent has gone for HH and/or Basilisks to deal with my early tendency towards a GM w/ GL focus. But when he gets the upper hand, he doesn't push with it. I keep poking him with lowly GM to keep an eye on how he's developing his troops and keep him distracted while I roll out a pair of Sentinels, then charge back in, smoke the vehicles, and win. Meanwhile he putzes around, resting on his laurels and simply teching or building more of what he's already got (and I'm already getting counters for) instead of using the army that he's built before it's countered.

Aggression, even if it's only to keep an eye on what you're opponent is fielding or mess up his econ a bit, is absolutely vital in DoW.

You need to hit fast and hard in the early game. If you can secure most of the map, then you get to bunker. Even then, don't bunker automatically; leave your guardsmen outside until they're in danger. This will be very fast against most ranged units (and be careful, bunker guns don't have good range) but you should let melee units take their time to run up to you before you hide, since guardsmen do more damage outside than inside.

harrasing is generally difficult with IG considering that GM are so weak in tier1
