/me shows off his shiny new star
You know, I'm basically a senior member now. Large mailbox, no ads, and a custom avie I won in a forum contest!
#53
Alright, I know I am a total tool and don't get the joke at my expense (even though I laughed...). Would someone please explain?
Edit: I officially nominate Merturk for Senior Membership.
Only one of us is going to leave here alive and it ain't gonna be me!

The joke is: you have allot of threads about you in the supar sekret moderator forum or thread/posts mentioning you. This kind of attention couldn't be all that good.

Most if not all of our sr members would find themselves mentioned in our staff forums due to the voting process that each one goes through.
Edit: Since several people have voiced concern over people becoming seniors due to just subscribing, i want to let you know that subscribing to this site will not get you senior membership. That is something that people earn through their actions... and that does not include pulling out a piece of plastic.
Cool...I like this idea. I would have participated in a fundraising drive, but this is a nice way of spreading out donations. Heck, I'm pretty sure that I'd still participate in a fundraising drive.
I enjoy these forums and I don't want them to go anywhere.
I'm glad that you can't buy senior membership. I don't think that I should be rewarded with that kind of status because I can afford it. It keeps Senior Membership for people that contribute to the community via there time and effort, not their wallet.
I like the star, but personally I'm proud of the green cross. It makes me feel good. It makes me feel like this forum did something tangibly good.
I guess my only question is: is subscription renewal automatic, or will there be some indicator that my subscription has "run out."

Renewal is not automatic - beyond that I'm not sure.
Also note that users who report posts would show up under a search of the staff forums for their name. Most if not all of our sr members would find themselves mentioned in our staff forums due to the voting process that each one goes through.

Some more than others I might add. Also, happy to help out.
#60
Is this going to be stickied/announced anywhere other then Forum Issues? Or are you still seeing how it goes before senind got the masses?
Also: I demand this ^^ member's red star be removed. His three stars are making us all look bad!

Oh in that case - hey why not?Per year, not per month. It's an annual subscription; you pay in advance for one year.![]()

I'd just like to reiterate that this system is going to remain in place for the forseeable future. Some people on IRC were telling me "I'll donate some time in the next couple of weeks okay," and I want to make it clear, if you want to donate, that's awesome, but don't feel you have to rush to do so-- this isn't a donation drive like we've had in the past. It's a system we're putting in place for you to donate and get a token of gratitude in return on a regular basis. If now isn't a good time, the gold star and whatnot is going to be here when you're ready.
Scoff much? Some of the Senior Members around here would do well to get off their high horse. I've been a part of similar events on other gaming forums and it didn't turn out to be, " I have to the right........". Noone got special treatment, a bannable offense was still a bannable offense. Get over yourselves.
Donation and subscription seems like opposing concepts, yet you somehow married them? I wan't to support the point that some asshat will just pay for the perks and think he bought them and then get REALLY UPSET when he's warned or something.
#68
Yeah, but it doesn't matter because it's his fault for not reading about what he was donating to in the first place.
I do think that calling it a subscription is a misnomer though. It is going to lead to confusion. That confusion isn't really a big problem, but it will create needless work for you mods.
Maybe for you. For me its a lot of monay.Idiot english guUnf unf unf, a bargain at £14.

I'm curious as to what Ruonim is trying to say.
I don't think I need to point fingers or quote the posts I found a bit offensive, unless it'll make you feel better. Ionfish summed it up rather well I think. God forbid I should step on anyone's toes by subscribing and possibly getting any "perks".Originally Posted by Retroboy

500 PM's? Seriously? Yikes! Seventy is a lot already and more than I get for paying elsewhere. I get a max of 40 PM's for $7.50 for six months.(also a V-Bulletin forum)
Custom avatars, I guess this would be a problem here because it's normally reserved for "Senior Members" I gather.
Animated avatars, I'm guessing this is a non-option for these forums but elsewhere one has to pay upwards of $35.00 or more for this feature. (and that's like a three month package)
Signatures, I pay for this feature elsewhere and was surprised to see it offered for free here. So of course I took advantage of it.![]()
So basically, I get everything free here that I pay for elsewhere except for a custom avatar. I wouldn't mind donating, this is by far the best set up and moderated community I've seen. As far as subscribing, I'll take a let's wait and see approach for now. It's new and obviously everything isn't hammered out yet.
500 pm's sound really nice, allows me to keep a better record of my modding business. If I can actually get my mom and dad to use their credit card on the net so I can subscribe, I'll subscribe (I hate not being able to use my own on the net, stupid age limit).

Seriously dude, we don't know what you're talking about. How would you be stepping on people's toes by getting an expanded pm box and a yellow star?I don't think I need to point fingers or quote the posts I found a bit offensive, unless it'll make you feel better. I imagine he was referring to the comments of "well, if they think they're getting the hallowed "Senior Member status" by paying then they can fuck right off, they shouldn't get too many perks either, it'll makes us Senior-type seem less special".
Correct?
#77
The closest anyone came to that was Tire's sentiment that he thought seniorship should be earned. I agree with him. I don't think that's pompous or arrogant at all. If you stick to the rules and post intelligently you will become a senior member.
You'd be correct sir.Originally Posted by Octopus Rex

k still puzzled here. Would someone mind please pointing out where Octo's comments come from with respect to this thread? And to avoid puzzling me further, please QUOTE the source of the perception???
I like the concept of senior membership as a qualification that people have 'given their chops' to these forums over time... but not if it automatically qualifies me as an elitist prig in the eyes of those who are not senior members if I am one. That's a club I'd rather not be in, thanks.

P.S.
I vote that, should it occur, any "obscene excess" of contributed funds that is above what would reasonably be required to tide the forums over through a period of advertising difficulty should go to ChildsPlay charity on behalf of the overall forum.

I hope this is not percieved as rude and i am not writing over any edits i haven't looked at but would it be possible to give us an idea of how much monies it costs to maintain this forum at its current level?
I like that idea. I trust the mod/admins to properly gauge the "obscene" qualifier to the excess funds.I vote that, should it occur, any "obscene excess" of contributed funds that is above what would reasonably be required to tide the forums over through a period of advertising difficulty should go to ChildsPlay charity on behalf of the overall forum.

Forget charity! Give it back to the community in the form of cool contests.
#86
Ok here's the thing though. This is not you buying a larger PM inbox, or a custom avatar. This is you saying "I like these forums, and I would like to contribute", and us saying "thank you, this is really nice of you, have a little token of gratitude". Of course you can choose not to subscribe, and we won't hold it against you. Think of it like giving blood - any money you get is a little thank-you, you're not selling the stuff.
As for senior membership status, this is indeed something that should be earned. Senior members are supposed to be setting an example. We notice them for their contributions, from creating cool tools for the community to simply being calm and friendly towards everyone, and reward them with a custom avatar and title. You're not working towards those perks, you are being a nice guy and a productive member because you like being both, and that's why we say "thanks" by giving you the avatar. Allowing people to essentially buy senior membership would cause that system to break down.
#87
That idea has some appeal but I think members should choose where their money goes. That is, if they want it to go to a charity, they can donate to that charity as many have. If they want to direct their money to running the forums, that's where it should end up. In other words, I suggest keeping donation drives separate.I vote that, should it occur, any "obscene excess" of contributed funds that is above what would reasonably be required to tide the forums over through a period of advertising difficulty should go to ChildsPlay charity on behalf of the overall forum.
If the first year or two yields enough money, run the forums with it for years to come until it runs out or for server upgrades as previously stated.

I got the impression that if the funds are enough, there might be some server upgrades so everyone gets more reliable foruming, but I guess it depends on how much there is. Since this is a once-a-year thing I guess it can't be anything too dramatic
Ruonim, I'm sorry to hear that your financial situation isn't as good as it could be, but I consider it a worthwhile investment for myself at least, and thus hence 'a bargain'.

[BLOCKED], I don't think everyone on the forums has an adverb filter, as you seem to. [BLOCKED], I find that my filter tends to [BLOCKED] miss conjunctive adverbs, but I am unfamiliar with these "Flash adverbs" you speak of.Originally Posted by Ruonim

I wounder if these golden stars have a hidden effect not mentioned that grants you immunity to the "1 random user deleted for the fun of it" while the forum has all the old un-active users removed?

While that's probably the case it's also quite likely that someone who's stumped up their twenty euros isn't liable to go AFK for six months.
#92
You're right Ionfish, but if this subscription sticks around it might be a nice little touch if you added a "if{subscriber == no}" type clause before the purging script/program whatever thingy. In the unlikely event that they are AFK for ages. It's not important though.
