    HW2 Big Extractor

    Hi All,

Well I see you've managed to do this yourself.... so I guess you don't need the HW2 BIG file extractor then.....

Very nice, Delphy! It's working pretty well, but the little demo window thingy (where it should show what is in the file you are currently selecting) doesn't show anything or only shows something like this:

    Lua@ æ[¡°¹²A/

    Not very useful, huh?

Anyways, I do like this .big extractor. The english.big file is rather informative, what with the ship.dat file and all (big list of all ships and subsystems). Seems the Vaygr have laser corvettes...

Dont give UP Delphy we need a complet working tool without any help of folder structurs (it does tooooo much work ^^) I testet your Big Extractor and there are some things that didnt work at me.

    1. It can only open the English.big . No other of the Big files. Everytime its an Runtime error in line '9'
    2. *deleted was a using fault*
Hope you get the full Demo soon, so that you can develop us a perfekt tool ^^

    Keep Work,

    Rei

Yeah, just noticed #1, too. #2, though, I don't have a problem with. See, it extracts them into the Homeworld2 data folder, NOT the one it created. Look there

EDIT: It also can't extract a few files, like the ones in leveldata:/

Nice one Stuart But can you please change your code to capture the cancel button on the open dialog box. Having the program crash when clicking on cancel is annoying...

Download the full install for the SGAViewer from mods.relicnews.com....

You are missing the zlib compression libraries.

Thanks for the tool, Delphy. Sure wish it could open the homeworld2.big itself, though!

[edit: read Rei's post. Cool. /edit]

Seems the Vaygr have laser corvettes...
That's just the Vaygr version of the Pulsar Corvette... we already know about that one:

k the new version should fix all problems above - including extracting the other .big files.

Oh and I fixed the cancel button

    http://www.a-fluffy.demon.co.uk/home...eExtractor.exe

(Note this opens both IC SGA and HW2 BIG files...)

Yay it works now ^__^ Delphy da man

All we need now is how to view the ship models... unless this is known and I'm behind in my modding news :dolt:

Hrm.... I can't seem to extract some files using this utility, Delphy. Says that the directory is messed up or something when I try to extract them individually. And it still doesn't show the contents of the file in the window

Well I am currently writing a program to view/extract/convert the HW2 .hod mesh files. There is quite a lot in them in addition to the basic mesh details. The textures and mex details are also in there as are one or two other bit that I have not yet fully understood. I'm just trying to work out the graphics format at present...

Update - just realised the textures are DXT5 compressed (doh) so that's that bit sorted!

Have you created the directories that the files go into? You can't just grab /art/fx/weapons/BFG/BFG.wepn and hit extract, You've got to create the /art/fx/weapons/BFG/ directory first.

you mean to say, you need the SGAextractor zip file, install that and THEN you plug delphy's HW2 bigfile reader into that directory so you don't get another error.

unfortunately, at this point i have no bloody clue how to view ship stat files because there's no preview and there's no understandable, intuitive way to correctly extract the data files.

i'm trying to get bomber stats

You cannot view the .ship files as they are compiled....

muffy, wait till the rdn release, you'll get the tuning spreadsheets which are much more readable than the lua export files.

I've extracted the files to c:\program files\sierra\homeworlddemo\data\... with all their subdirectories and so on. My question is, how do I get the homeworld demo to use these extracted files, rather than homeworld2.big?

But then again u cant really do anything with the files as there not editable yet well except for 1 or two tga files like ive found but i doubt it would improve anything.

nobody listens or bothers to read the other couple big & popular threads on this topic before posting another redundant question, do they?

    - YOU CAN NOT COMPILE YOUR OWN .BIG YET
    - YOU CAN NOT GET HW2 DEMO TO RECOGNIZE "NEW" FILES
    - YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THE ENTIRE/COMPLETE SGAVIEWER install for IC FIRST TO GET THE .OCX FILE, THEN USE THE HW2 BIGEXTRACTORS.

    ....good grief....

  30. #30
    I've updated this to v2.2

This now extracts the speech and music correctly, but you'll need Relics Winamp plugin to listen to them correctly.

Note that FDA files are renamed to AIFR and play fine.

Also if you get that file not found please post the contents of sgaExtract.log - I can never replicate the problem on my machine.

    Regards
    Delphy

Yea nice going Delphy! ("... listening to HW2-radio brought to you by...").

I think we shouldn't use v.2.2 to get HOD files, but I might be mistaken. For HOD files v.2.1 works fine for me.

readed. And? If you want error example - go to Action and set extract dir. Then push '...' button and try to select directory.

(edit). Now......................... ONLY way to extract files i have discovered, is to extract all files (else program error and desctop, whatever i do, including your instructions). .log file dont save that errors.

    Run-time error...

    Hello all,

I keep getting a runtime error when I try to extract. I have no idea what I'm doing really. I set a directory to extract the MUSIC.BIG file. All I want to do is listen to the music. What I am doing wrong?

    Thanks,
    Joshua

make sure you put this last exe (you can get it from the first link in this thread) in the same folder as all the files that came with the original IC sga extractor

If you create a directory structure in your homeworld 2 directory like in the big file, and put its files in there... will they override the .big files? Like they did in HW1?

  48. #48

Delphy, no offense, but pretty much nothing works. Everything except for opening a BIG file will crash it with a runtime error.

Hector, If you follow the instructions it works fine.

    1) Instal SGA Viewer located here

    2) Place the RelicArchiveExtractor.exe in the SGA install folder (default being C:\Program Files\prjSigmaExtract )

Run the RAE and it will now work.

Oh and I used it to extract everything from the all the big files, only took a few moments aswell, thanks Delphy

Hi, having the same MSCOMCTL.OCX problem. Installed the above viewer files and place the Relic viewer in the same directory. When I try to run it, I get an error based on the above file being missing or corrupt.

Is there some updated Visual Basic library needed as well.

I'm currently running WinXP SP1 and all updates up to Sept 19, 2003

    Thanks
