    DX10 Alt+Tab, looses widescreen aspect ratio ?

    Since the DX10 patch and running in DX10 mode, ive noticed that whenever the games minimizes (Say for example, someone signs in on MSN, and i get the alert saying so, the game will auto minimize for some strange reason), i click to go back on CoH, and i THINK it stays at the same resolution, but the aspect ratio is completely out of whack.

    I run at 1440x900, which is 16:10, im assuming it wrongly tabs back in at the 4:3 ratio or whatever it is.

    Would it be possible to have this fixed next patch ? .

    Can you do a screenshot before and after? That'll prove it conclusively.

    Also, a warnings.log file would be great.

    You are putting it back to fulllscreen by maximizing after tabbing out?

    It actually appears that it goes back in at 1280x960, so basically not going back to normal resolution :/.

    Can you show the example from in game? Just load up say a skirmish mission and do the same thing.

    Yes, I have had the exact same problem but I didn't know how to word it....
    If you've noticed their accuracy (scoutcars), it's almost as if the gunner has a death wish or has made a bet with Klaus over who can shoot more bullets into the ground than the enemy.

    Hi guys. We've logged this as a bug now, and we're trying to reproduce it but are having difficulty. Can you guys post your full system stats (example below) and list the EXACT steps needed to reproduce this?

    Ive since upgraded to a 24" monitor, gaming at 1920x1200, so the issue no longer affects me, but il give you my specs .

    PSU - Corsair 520w
    Video Card - GeForce 8800GT 512Mb
    Video Driver - v169.25
    CPU - AMD Athlon X2 6000+
    Motherboard - MSI K9N Neo
    Memory - Corsair 4GB (1GB x 4 sticks)
    Sound Card - Onboard Realtek HD Audio
    Sound Card Driver - Latest one from Windows Update
    Mouse - Normal PS/2 Mouse
    OS - Vista Home Premium 32bit
    Hotfixes - All the important ones (Virtual memory hotfix etc)

    Couldnt tell you the rest of the specs. Basically, if you played the game at 1440x900, alt tabbed out then came back in, the res would go down to 1280x920 or something like that. Another example, say your on MSN messenger but appearing offline, you start playing COH in DX10, someone signs in and the game goes windowed, so you full screen it and it goes back down a res. Hope this helps !

    Bumping this, having this issue with vista ultimate 64bit too when I switched from xp.

    Exactly the same thing, any activity at all on my desktop (avg/msn/windows sidebar gadgets that "refresh/update") causes the game to minimize and go to windowed mode automatically, only happens with CoH (I'm running vanilla 1.71) Been looking for a fix for hours now and after several tests it's only with CoH that I get this.

    I think the problem is a function in CoH somewhere that causes the game to go windowed mode automatically at some point, which could be bugging and applying this to minimizing of the game.

    I'm having the same problem, only with a 22" Monitor on 1680x1050
    I can't alt tab, when I try it switches CoH to windowed mode.
    Just built this comp today.

    CPU: Intel i7 920
    MB: evga x58
    GPU: evga GTX 260
    RAM: 6gb OCZ
    OS: Win Vista Ultimate x64

    I've googled the hell out of this problem but can't find any solutions. It's really bothersome as I tend to Alt Tab a lot in game.
    It also only happens in DX10 mode.

    When I alt-tab, CoH becomes windowed at a reduced resolution, but still looks sharp, as if the windowed display is in a corrected-for-windowed resolution. If i click CoH in task bar, or alt-tab rotate open app's, CoH invariably ends up being shown in a 4:3 res, at some horribley low res.

    Another issue ive noticed, is that some areas of the map become fully black, although i can still see the UI, i can mouse-scroll the map and i can go from seeing the map as would be normally (albeit in crappy res), to being black and blind of all. this happens to fixed areas in the map, i cannot explain why, possibly due to some latent dx10 effects which might have existed before the alt-tab.

    Video driver – 185.66
    CPU – Intel 3.65 gigahertz i7 920

    still get this issue with 2.6 when ultra-shader is enabled, fine if its lower however. annoying as i get perfect FPS in DX10 mode and would like to use it =/

    OS - windows 7 64bit

    I realise this thread's a bit old, but this is still a problem for me now, with a fully up-to-date v2.601.0 of CoH. :-(

    Running 1440x900 as were others on the thread. Alt-tabbing puts it in windowed mode and re-maximising changes the resolution to something appalling. I've also had it crash CoH when trying to maximise back in: I attach the crash report.

    Edit: However, as per comment #19, the problem goes if you select non-Ultra shader quality. So not too bad after all, but very annoying when it auto-sets it to Ultra.

    If there's a more recent/relevant thread or bug report, let me know. Cheers.

    DX10 is messed up. I had this issue also, if you back to everything on High(Not ULTRA!) everything works. Xfire works and you can Alt-Tab without your screen messing up. A bit annoying that I can't play with DX10

    Sorry for necroing old post, but this has the best info on the problem

    I too recently upgraded to Windows 7 (64 pro) and finally "got over" DX9
    With my GF 8800GTS (newest drivers) on my 1440x900 Samsung T190 (LCD) monitor I'm noticing the same weird behavior (changing to 1280x960 after alt tabbing).
    It all goes away if I select high shader instead of Direct3D10 shader. (though there is no window mode in DX9 at all, alt-enter doesn't work, only alt-tab)(can you disable windowed mode in DX10? that would be one solution)

    The weird thing is that if I choose 1280x800 resolution (the only other 16:10) then the Direct3D10 scales that to 1440x900 in full-screen mode. Window mode and alt-tabbing work normally (the window is proper size too for 1280x800) with that, unless you try to maximize the window (by double clicking its top bar)before pressing alt-enter (or maximize button). In DX9 it doesn't scale the 1280x800 resolution at all and leaves black edges around it (I have set scaling to none in my monitor and nvidia control panel center). So I'm guessing DX10 tries to force the scaling itself for some reason. Any way to shut that off?

    I found this article that may imply the CoH coding team didn't code window mode resolutions all that well or something:

    EDIT: Well after more testing I found out that if I set resolution to 1280x960, the "bad" resolution it wants to turn to after alt tabbing, I can get it to scale to 1440x900 by alt-enter, double click top bar to maximize window and then press alt-enter again.
    I went to nvidia panel and disabled scaling, set perform scaling on GPU (on display kept scaling stuff), set override the scaling mode set by games and programs.
    That last one finally made me able to have black borders around smaller than 1440x900 (my native) resolutions and display them pixel for pixel.
    So I'm guessing your Direct3D10 code applies scaling by default. Please change that. Put an option for scaling on/off next game.

    Hmm now the "bad" res is 1280x1024 that it defaults to if I use 1440x900 windowed and try to go back to full-screen. Same thing if I use any lower resolution and maximize the game window by double clicking on the top bar (or dragging it to the desktop top) and afterwards pressing alt-enter. This leads me to conclude that the problem lies in "too big" window in windowed mode not "translating" properly to full-screen. And at max res (native 1440x900) that problem happens all the time because the window is by default as big as the desktop.
    This is a really weird bug, my choices are either to play in DX9 instead of DX10 or to use 1280x800 (with some black border, I hate scaling) instead of 1440x900 OR never to alt-tab out of the game.
    Why does it go to window mode if I alt-tab anyway? It doesn't do that in DX9. Why doesn't it alt-tab normally and keep the game full-screen but hidden like in DX9?


    PS: why does my monitor support resolutions with more vertical pixels(lines) than 900 anyway? like 1280x1024 and 1280x960 which it scales down I guess.

    Oh one last thing to note is windowed mode is set to be always on top (of everything) and I can't minimize it or change it at all.

    Resolution problem

    Hello,
    Am having the weird resolution problems after alt-tabing like the rest. @ 1440 x 900 resolution running the latest update.

    my specs:

    core2quad q9650 3GHZ
    8GB DDR2 ram
    GTX 460 gfx card with 768mb vram.
    windows 7 64bit ultimate

    hopefully there will a fix soon.

    Hey, having the same problem as others. Unlike the screenshots Ogp posted, mine seems to do the opposite. Whereas his looks like the game has squished his screen inwards, mine is stretched out and flattened, and much more distorted looking. Probably just going to a weirder resolution. It's a pity this started happening, like simanos I recently just "got over" DX9

    applying your solution that is selecting no scaling and selecting perform scaling on to gpu in Nvidia CP seems to have helped me and I can now alt tab properly witout the aspect ratio in coh getting messed up AND INFACT alt tabing in coh is so much more smooth now it seems I am alt tabbing between different windows programs and not a game but I wanted to ask if this will affect any other stuff on my system which I should be aware of?

    EDIT:::: WELL I SPOKE TOO SOON.

    The problem is still there its just that coh is now windowed WITHOUT the borders which makes me think its alt tabbed back properly which would be fine but I cant use my mouse to scroll in that case and again when I alt enter to maximize it, coh becomes wide screened!!

    can someone please help me with this

    I changed my gpu from nvidia gf 8800 gts to ATI radeon hd 4890 and the problem is still there and I fear.
    Just fess up, you coded it wrong per:

    at least for some resolutions.
    If I want to alt-tab I have to play in something lower than 1440x900 so the windowed mode isn't too big and get corrupted upon going full-screen again. Or play with DX9 and CoH2 will not support DX9 right? Or will it? Just asking.

    PS: And I hate ATI now too. For some reason it doesn't allow me to tweak GPU scaling. It's either on or off (and the the monitor does it, stupid thing). It has 3 sub-options under GPU scaling, but they're greyed out and "scale image to full panel size" is always selected. The other 2 choices are "maintain aspect ration" and "use centered timings" (

    They fixed this in CoH2 in a recent patch. I hope they could fix it for CoH steam new version >.<
