Kronus - Updated SCAR for SS, UA, Nids, FoK, SL and I : DH

I think that might have done it...spending 5+ hours every day for a month may have nearly cost me my woman, but it's all behind me now

Kronus is a 7 player FFA map of well...Kronus, the map that you fight over in the single player DC and is based squarely on the Meta-Map.

Each starting position is unique, and reflective of both the starting territories in the DC campaign and the racial stronghold maps. Also in common with the Meta-Map are the bonus territories - land that if you occupy gives your army particular bonuses, and I have attempted to replicate these bonuses via SCAR. Oh...and in a tribute to Badman, I have hidden Pinky somewhere about the lands...

    Eye candy

    The minimap

    BOOM!

    PULSE!

    CANNON!

    FORTRESS!

In this file there is now only one Kronus map, rather than 8 as in the original, and the only change is to the SCAR file which now supports the units from:
    Dark Crusade
    Soul Storm
    Inquisition Daemonhunt
    Steel Legion
    Firestorm over Kronus
    Ultimate Apocalypse
    Tyranids

To install, extract this archive to either
    C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War - Dark Crusade\DXP2\Data\scenarios\mp
    or
    C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War - Soulstorm\DXP2\Data\scenarios\mp

Although note that you may have to create these folders or adjust the paths if you have installed to a non-default area.

    It's Kronus!

Is this like a standard skirmish map then? Or is there more to it than the eye can see?

    It looks HUGE!

Well. I know where you got the tile set

Sorry Akranadas, that's the basic untextured grid isn't it? Or have you gunged up my harddrive with wraithbone (it is running slowly of late)?

It's a big skirmish map...with SCAR coding. I've tried my best to emulate the functions of the territories in the metamap. On the plus, it should only need basic texturing. Don't know about cover yet, maybe near the walls.

Yeah, for some reason it takes the basic tile slot, can be annoying.

    poink!

Bit more of a WIP shot.... See if you can spot Gorgutz! He's a bit smaller than on the original metamap

Texturing is to highlight the topography, I don't consider that region finished.

edit take 2: found him.... he's way small

    Crikey.... mountains...

    lots of mountains...

a whole damn range of mountains....

Come on Eldar North Pole! Although Chaos are getting the treatment next - see if you can spot Eliphas this time (in Daemon form to give you a chance!)

Again, textures are not finished and neither is the chaos base, which I haven't started.

Looks rather, er, Kronus-y I think I can spot Eliphas...

It's coming along rather nicely. I'm just waiting to see if it will make my laptop pack in...

    OMG thats just wrong.
4500 lines of code aswell? i take it when you capture a point you capture the region based of the first pic. whats all the other code for?

    Wrong how?

If you have played the DC campaign you will have a fair idea as to what the code does

its wrong, in how long it took for someone to come up with that and all the stuff that coding is going to bring to that map.
my guess is that we arent going to expect whats going to go on in that map.

besides i only did a few races on the campaign. found it sort of boring after as all the maps where pretty much the same goal as the last one.

Keep wondering...somethings can't be shown by pictures alone. Unlike another mountain... and I thought the North would be flat - when is the North EVER flat?

PS - everyone bored of the pictures yet? Shall I stop posting them? Can you spot Gwen SteFarseer?

  20. Child's Play Donor Forum Subscriber  #20
Heh, how did she get up there??

A question for you. How did you get the outline right? Did you reference an existing image or was it all freehand?

  21. #21
Using FoF and her Mary Poppins-esque skirt.

Outline was a screengrab and then a few hours in paintshop to define and greyscale. Now I am referring to the actual map to get the terrain as accurate as I can.

I'm kinda surprised that no-one thought of it first really.

i'm very dubitative about this SCARy map

i'll be truly surprised to see how you adapted ALL the scar scripted mission from DC to your map (just ~4000 code lines)...come on Fuggles you're kidding me... .

  23. #23
hmmm... perhaps I mislead you... I haven't adapted the missions, merely the bonuses for holding the special territories.

That said.... maybe I should?! Can you imagine trying to herd scientists about whilst some macro-gridkey-wizard lines up on your borders

i reread several times before posting my previous thread, yes you mislead me !!!

theroicaly importing all the scar from the different missionc ould be done, but i can't imagine the nightmare it could be. Build the titanic with machtes at scale 1:1 will be easier !

  25. #25
Plus it may be IMBA was my concern - chaos is protected by blood pulse, which will take out all early attacks. IG is protected by Titan Cannon, which I'm not sure can be done in multiplayer SCAR, but would probably be IMBA. Marines would be morale immune...

Edit - Thinking about it I could do the Titan Cannon... and maybe enable the blood pulse if you kill enough... but probably won't.

In ways of a progress report, Eliphas has now inherited some land! The flat(ter) lands are a bit easier to do (although this one was a little fiddly) so the topography should bobble along nicely.

Caption along the lines of "I SHALL MAKE THIS WORLD MINE!"

Edit - I might as well update this post I suppose - Victory Bay is now in place, but untextured (I will post pics if anyone is interested). Just the SM, Tau and Necron to go in terms of HQ's - then the middle bits will be much easier. Then... months of texturing...and testing if anyone is keen?

haha very nice. sign me up for testing!. i need a new hobby...

  27. #27
Will do! As an update - Chaos base done, IG base 95% done. The 2 territories in between are done too.

Necron Lord Phil (or whatever he was called) is pleased with how the construction of his tomb is going...

It's scary how long making a map takes o_0

This map has caught my attention and definately sparked my interest. If you still need testers, sign me up as well. But it would be a first time for me, so I don't know if that would put me at the bottom of the list

  30. #30
Lol, it will be my first 100% completed map, so you will be in good company

Update - Necrons are FINALLY done (thank the Lord) and the Tau base just needs blending. I say 'just', I've learned that this is the hardest part and why the 'crons took so long

Still, learning as I go! 4 bases and 3/4 neutral territories done. AI seems happy enough, SCAR hasn't broken much. All good signs. Call me Smuggles.

i'll test for ya too. i'll play online against anyother testers if they want.

I'll have a damn good go at getting it done this week, but it might slip into next week - depends on what problems I have (aside from my g/f being really pissed that I spend roughly 4 hours a day making a map)!

I think/hope the necron base was the hardest to do. So hopefully, progress will be smooth - tomorrow I would like to tidy up the Tau and do 1 or 2 neutrals. Might post some screenies, might leave it as a surprise. I'm too tired to decide.

Ooo the necron base would be weird as the actual stronghold is underground...

  35. #35
    Hi Gang!

I believe I'm going to finish the Space Marine base layout today and this will only leave about 2 mountain ranges to do on the neutral territories before the topography is done. This leaves me to tidy up the Eldar base and do some texture/decal work.

So... I will imminently need testers to give feedback on SP's, balancing and SCAR, especially if you have a LAN party coming up!

I don't know how much time I will get this week, but I am advertising in advance. I will work on the map this week, and hopefully finish off the Eldar/SM base and the neutrals before I send it, as I want to give it a few plays first. It still might slip to next week, but I will have a good crack at being done by this weekend.

i can test it, online and in Lan/directjoin games but only if you made some scar debugging before and assure me that your scar is running smooth.

This i wont do : launch DC in -dev mod on both comp, wait until the game is launched, launch direct join, wait....launch the game...wait...start the game and "FATAL SCAR ERROR game paused", quit DC to desktop....go and open the log files...edit the scar code to see where is the error....relaunch the game to see if the error is corected. it means 30 min at each debug phase at the best ! I will test your map but i wont do debbuging.

If you could edit your first post with a detailed briefing of what is your map about and what we should expect to find on it it will be usefull. Read 5+ pages of post if you don't have problem with the map is a waste of time imo.

  37. #37
Don't worry JL, I will do some testing first! My SCAR seems to run fine and has had one crash in the whole time owing to a missed letter. I have been play testing it and I spent a full 2 days creating and testing the SCAR originally, one function at a time.

I'm not releasing it until I'm happy with it, but I can't guarantee it won't ever SCAR error - hence testing - but I have tested all my functions and they work. Certainly I have left a skirmish running for an hour and no errors came up.

    I really want balance feedback.

  38. #38
Ill test it for you np. Ill be able to test it online for sync errors and the like with other people.

he can take all the time he wants. perfection is a good thing. thats what seperates human architecture from elven architechture. we have no perfection as a whole while the elves do.

    yeah, they live in Finland!

Lol, I will strive for perfection, but will most likely achieve the best I can. It is pretty damn cool though, even if I do say so myself! Kronus may have a pretty unlikely eco-system, but it does make some nice views. I'm torn between showing you guys what I have done, or waiting to sucker punch you when it's ready... :\

I would suggest that you do a d/l link for each map and one for all of them together. As i hope to test it for you I, however wont mind d/ling 14mb at all. Just means i have to play more - which isnt a bad thing!

  46. #46
Lol, no you won't! It will be the same map with the same code, just the player 1 slot will be a different race. You can still just slap it on random starting positions, I just think it would just be nice if you can start everyone off where they are supposed to when you play your favourite race. That said... test it lost anyway

Not long now until the test version is ready folks!

Space Marines and Eldar get an advantage lol
SM with there deep strikes (DREADNOUGHT!? >.<)
    Eldar with Webway Gates (+Turrents)
    Necrons with Monolith (Teleport!!!)
while Tau is vulernable to everything on the long walk across 3-mile-island lol.

And 14mb isn't so bad for a enourmeous map like that.
