Akranadas is right. publishers don't care about their developers, they want their sales figures right in order to appease the shareholders. it's all about the money, well it always was, but in the beginning there was some fun involved, cause video games was a niche market, now it has a global market.By not buying the game, I am not doing any damage to THQ, the damage will be felt by Relic. Who without sales; won't get the go ahead to develop more titles like another chapter of Company of Heroes or future patches. Why patch a game that doesn't sell well?
maybe you know the gothic series, it was made by a german developer team. the first game in the series was published by a relatively small publisher, after its relatively huge success in germany, they were signed by a major publisher and the problems began. (well to be honest there were some bugs but those were solved soon) the second was not ready to be released, jowood the publisher released it anyway. the bugs wasn't that much a pain in the ass, but it made playing a little uneasy at some stages in the game.
with the third game in row, piranha bytes the developer maybe loaded a bit too much on his shoulders, trying to convince the fans critics and the market. the release was postponed numerous times, and when the game finally was released it was not playable. after the release the developer said, they woul've need at least some more month for bugfixing but the publisher wouldn't let them. they were forced to release it because they wanted it released before the fiscal quarter ended. after they found out that they made a not so great decision they wanted it fixed. problem: it could't be fixed in a matter of time, and soon after the developer was fired, they recruited some devoted and able fans to do some fixes that resulted in so called community patches solving many problems on the surface, making it at least playable, but the problem remains, it is an unfinished game that can't be finished. the publisher found another idiot to develop a sequel and excluded the original developers from their own brain child because they have the rights on the game, theoretically an addon and one sequel.
an addon that was supposed to address the problem of the main game was stalled after they were fired.
