    Nesewdjet-Nedjety [5.25.2013 Epic Crusaders]

I finally worked through enough of the macragge set on tyranids and I'm getting around to my test mini for my own SM army I'm building. This is my color test for it. Overall I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, I think I'll add a bit more catachan to a few areas on the backpack and probably swap out the bronze on some of the trim for tin bitz.

Thanks. I'll probably not adjust this one but when I work up the missile trooper next I'll change up teh backpack, Probably start with ice blue for the eyes and move up to a mix of white and blue with a dot of white instead of UM blue and working up to ice blue.

I think the gun should be the same colour as the shoulderpads...
Other that that - I like it! Keep it up!

Excellent white! I'm personall never able to get white to go on well at all, so congrats for it. I do have 2 qualms with this model:

    -gold is too thick, flat

    -red clutters it up

so ditch the red for green then ink/highlight the gold and you've got some sexy Adeptus Astartes there.

  7. #7
Thanks, but the model is khaki, not white. There also isn't any gold on it, its bronze highlighted with boltgun on the edges and then a overcoat of brown ink. the only exception is the exhaust portions on the backpack that are tinbitz. The shoulder pads aren't red either, they are dark flesh, so more of a warm brown; you can compare it on the insignia that is red. Perhaps I should go back and color correct the image tonight.

I think it looks spectacular, but I was already partial to your color scheme after seeing it in your other threads. Though, I must say it looks better on the mini then it does on paper!

As for changing some of the colors around, I don't see much of a problem. The gun balances out with the head I think. Though more of the color from the shoulder pads could be used somewhere. Perhaps on the pack?

I like the colour scheme including the gun casing.

Good job. Hope to see more soon. And more close ups.

Thanks. Normally I'd be using the greaves with kneepads and the shoulder color would go there. unfortunately I can't do much about that on these greaves since its a maccragge figure and I'm not fond of painting an arbitrary stripe of color across the top of the lower leg.

I wouldn't worry about that, this IMO are things that loosen up the overall picture, if you have more than one mini. If you look at a squad of 10 and all look exactly the same it gets kind of boring, but if you diversify a little bit, things stay interesting.

It's a pretty good scheme, however my one qualm is the use of bronze in it. The bronze seems to clash with the colors around it, particularly the shoulders (brown + bronze? yeck), and just doesn't fit in with the rest of the model. I would suggest a non-metallic, such as a grey or one of the lesser used colors on your scheme already (generally I stick to 3 primary colors for a model, 2 prominent and one more subdued). Something more contrasting and less clashing would be better I think.

  13. #13
the different shades of brown and khaki accent each other pretty well in life (the brown working together since the bronze is a bit brighter and accents the warmer shoulder pad)and I need to keep metallics on it for fluff reasons (egyptian based chapter so bronze, gold more for command level in large amounts, browns, green, reds, and blues to keep with the color palette) Grey would clash badly with the scheme and green trim would be too overpowering.

I could probable undercoat the bronze on the shoulder pad trim lighter so there is more contrast.

Started in on the chapter master. I think I have a pose down and I've inset the crux terminatus into the breastplate. A bit of greenstuff and some sculpting on that and on the rest of the armor to give it a bit more of an ornate artificer feel to go with the bulk added by the pads. Then I need to figure out a better place and method for the iron halo. I might swap out the greaves for some chaos ones since they already have a bit of ornateness added to them.

You've done a great job painting these with a very interesting colour scheme. The Chapter Master looks great as well, however theres something a bit odd with his pose, most likely his sword arm looking to straight. I also think a white strip on the green helmets to match the bone armour would help the model.
You know you should go to sleep when the sheep your counting start to hit the fence.

  16. #16
Yes, that's it, Sheep's right... the sword arm looks hyperextended or something. Other than that, pose looks good.

the sword arm you have on your chapter master now is a sword that is supposed to be in the raised postion, as it is now, it looks posed awkwardly, I would suggest either raise the arm, or look for an alternate arm as that just looks a bit strange

If you are dead set on using the arm, you might want to trim the wrist down and reposition the hand so its not at an angle

  18. #18
I like the sword that arm has, but I see your point I'll rummage around in the bits box and see if there is a better arm, but I'll probably end up trimming it to fit right.

A lot of the bits I have I don't know what the original intent was so I just kind of put them if they fit the pose I want or look like they might fit it.

I don't like capes or tall banners poking off of backpacks. I can't see what good they would do in combat other than hamper movement or get stuck on things.

I have debated giving him an egyptian style kilt though I don't know if I really want to bother with it.

almost got done with two marines this weekend, have to finish up weapons, helmets, backpacks, and highlight the pouches. kinda went too fast on the highlights and didn't get them as clean as I'd have liked... oh well.

Wow these marines look ace. One of the few marines I've seen with earthly colours.
    keep it up.

  25. #25
    Ace painting job!

I have to ask though... and cry pardon for asking, but still. How do you pronounce the name of your Chapter? To me it reads as [Nes-ew-jet Ned-jetty], is that anywhere close to right?

  26. #26
    Thanks!

Damar: you are about right though I tend to say the first half ne-sew-jet

  27. #27
ok finally got these two done tonight. would have finished tuesday but had some stuff come up. such is life. On to cleaning more marines and dulcoating these guys tomorrow. It seems like my light setup is killing the highlights on the helms and weapons. it actually fades to a lighter green.

I think the white is probably the best bit. Its really dark and worn but you can still tell its white. Can't wait to see a few more different units done like this.

  32. #32
Thanks! I'm trying to figure out how this will translate into the scheme for vehicles right now. I'm thinking more khaki with recesses being brown and the weapons green again.

First things first... The pics are streching the layout so maybe you should link or but them in a spoiler.
anyway its a fine pose you got there. I would probably dont make him lean so much to the right(the mini's) but more straight up.
and please remove mold lines before painting

  36. #36
oops. ok fixed the images so they are vertical now, shouldn't stretch the layout anymore. Noticed the leaning, and fixed it. I guess I bumped him or the stickytack shifted on me Have no fear, the mold lines will vanish before painting.

after many days without updates, I present 4 more marines and varras. Prometheus painted varras and I did my sgt as our first attempts at painting flesh.

I'm hoping to finish up the backpacks for the sgt and last bolter marine finally finishing out the marine end of the maccragge set.

    in progress:

finished: I'm pretty happy with the lascannon and the freehand for his chapter symbol despite being a bit off proportionally.

THis leaves only the plasma gunner for the first squad to be complete, but since I already did a missile marine for the dev squad to finish up the maccragge set I think I'll move on to the land speeder next.

The position on the chapter master's sword arm is OK, to be honest; I'm more used to axe-fighting myself but that's actually a position you'd hold a blade in after going through various circular parrying/deflecting motions or some salutes. It works as a 'ready' position as well for some styles of sword fighting.

Like the colour scheme, by the way; it's earthy without being drab, which is quite a difficult thing to pull off.

The figure is from the Macragge set so he wouldn't be able to change the pose unless he did some sort of conversion. I see the sword pose as more like an "ARRRG!" macho, fist-pumping sort of pose rather than a true fighting position. I'm not aware of any fighting style that says that you have to expose your entire kill-zone by holding your sword above you and to the side...

lol, if there were such a style I'm guessing all the "masters" were killed off.

Edit: Oops I misread your post. I thought that you were talking about the sergeant. Oh well...

Both the chainsword guy and the dude with the box are from Macragge, they both are cast like that... I happen to be working on those same pieces right now. Of course, I am now totally intimidated and afraid to show my work in comparison to seeing what Vaaish has done, they're really nice, I hope I can equal the good painting when I start!

Thanks! Well I finished up the sgt and last bolter marine. Now moving on to the first land speeder.

Sansa you got to start somewhere and I've seen everything from what looks like a model dipped in the paint pot to GD material posted so don't worry what it looks like, post it. People around here will give you pointers to get better too.

  42. #42
That is one of the most unique and outstanding schemes I have seen in a while. I am utterly impressed with what you have achieved with the Maccrage set. You could have a look round for some purity seals, scrolls or cyber skulls to add that 'pretty' final touch to your guys!

  43. #43
well I've started in on my first land speeder. Nothing is glued together yet pending finishing up the interior of the thing. but I went ahead and got the bottom finished up awaiting the final placement of the assault cannon.

Most of the upper hull will be khaki with the indentions and "flaps" being dark flesh and the weapon housings green.

It's great to see all these guys coming together, and the scheme (and painting) look really solid. Definitely a unified force that'll look great on the tabletop.

If I read your post right, you didn't paint up Varras - I do have one suggestion and that would be to maybe paint the geneseed "vials" in the case something other than yellowish-green. Maybe glowing blue or some other funky color, but I'd say go with a shade that isn't already primarily represented in the army scheme. Personal preference, though, but I think they need to stand out more.

I'm really loving the metals on the Land Speeder thus far - a great color when seen in isolation. Is it still Bronze highlighted with Boltgun and then a wash of Brown Ink?

  45. #45
Thanks, It really starts getting exciting now that I can see more than one or two models together at once

Yeah, Prometheus painted varras, not me, but he fits here much better than under his Tau thread so we took the photos with varras in the mix.

The metals on the landspeeder are a mix of stuff.

bumper, pipes: drybrush boltgun, then decided bronze would be better and drybrushed dwarf bronze, inked with brown in a couple of times, hit the edges with a bit of straight bronze, then a tad of shining gold.

Vents, targeting spire: straight tin bitz light brush of boltgun here and there.

exhaust: heavy drybrush boltgun, tinbitz, brown ink on the top and a little of the sides, highlight the edges with boltgun.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the assault cannon since I really don't like it hanging down as low as it does. really kills the profile.

I'm personally not fully sold on the colour scheme, though it's well painted, but I thought I'd drop by and say that the metal on the Landspeeder looks absolutely superb.

@ Tin: Thanks for the suggestion on Varras. I'd have to agree with your thoughts on the geneseed vials. I started with ultrmarine blue for the base and then went to ice blue and white from there. After I had the blue, my thought was to add some yellow glazing and highlights in a few spots while still allowing much of the blue to show through. I've got to admit I ended up adding more yellow than I planned on initially and the overall feel is different as a result. I would point out that the picture makes it appear much more yellow than it actually is though. You really can't make out any of the blue tones underneath (and very little of the greens either) in the picture. Even so, I might go back and change them back to a stronger, more unified blue if they continue to bug me though.

  48. #48
More progress on the landspeeder. Nearly got all the interior done, just have to work up the khaki.

Well I've been working on this but I didn't think progressive shots of coats of khaki made for interesting posts so I've waited until final assembly was complete.

Now to add all the greebles, weapons, marines, and chapter symbols.
