I always forget how small these speeders actually are and then I see some fingers in the shot and it reminds me. Unless you're a giant that is...

    Great looking paintjob.

    Amazing, just amazing....

Thanks y'all. I've taken a bit of a break today while I was base coating the rest of the pieces of the speeder to work on the commander. Here he his in all his semi-acceptable GS glory

That's pretty cool man, nice job

As Chapter Master are you going to use any special rules for him, like Azrael, Calgar or Helbrecht?

That is a great model. Excellent use of green stuff. Did you sculpt directly or make some molds?
    Look on the bright side....

  8. #58
    Thanks!

Antaeus: no special rules, just scales up through the point range to get artificer armor, iron halo, bolt pistol, power weapon, master, termie honors.

Motherland: some areas are sculpted others are molded. the molds are mostly sculpting to get the glyphs and stuff in.

Ahh cool What did you use for the shoulder pads? They look great. Maybe give him a cape too, he looks great but to me he seems like he needs just a little 'more' to show he's a chapter master, you know?

    damn!
    nice GS work
my only complaint is that you're using the champion shoulder pads for the commander(this is my personal preference)
maybe try sculpting some hardcore pads

  11. #61
the pads are from the Emperors Champion in the command squad box.

Very cool! I was also thinking about using the champion pads from the command squad but it seems I've been beat to it... looks amazing though are you going to make him battle scard? Possibly add some bullit impact craters or something maybe I'll be able to upload my pics to show you...

  13. #63
nah. I'm not doing any battle damage on these guys. part of their theme is order and balance and so they would take exquisite care of their armor and vehicles cleaning and repairing them whenever possible.

Those are definitely molds, and they're pretty damn sweet. Nice job.

  15. #65
ok I finished up the land speeder tonight. Going to wait a bit to let the paint cure a bit before I seal it. then work on the base. I have a few ideas of what I will change when I do the other two.

I think the gold armour on the marines needs to look like the gold on the "bumper" of the speeder. A bit older/worn, instead of so shiny. BTW how many layers did that take for the Khaki? Excellent job, and very clean coats of paint.

  18. #68
Very nice speeder, nicely highlighted too.

I also like the gem effect on the red lens.

That commander looks spectacular, I'm looking forward to seeing him painted.

The finished landspeeder looks great too. Though, overall the body looks almost too clean. Maybe some dirt on it somewhere or perhaps the same way the bolter the marine is holding looks? Just my opinion, though, since you said above that they prefer to keep their armor and equipment well maintained. I'm just used to seeing them war worn and dirty, I guess!

Forged in Vulkan's fires, we are stronger than steel!

  20. #70
Thanks, I've finally gotten around to do a proper whitepoint calibration for my camera so hopefully my bronze won't keep appearing gold and the colors will be a little closer.

I was thinking on the marines they would probably have more time to clean their equipment and that it would be more protected than the bumper on the front of the speeder and be a bit brighter. This should also match mostly the rest of the marines I've painted. The Khaki took between 3 and 4 coats to get even. Part of me is really hating the choice to use that as my primary colors. Given the coats needed I could probably have painted all 4 tac and dev squads in the time it's taken to do one.

next up is to basecoat and paint the master and plasma gunner. THat should give me a complete unmounted tac squad, configurable chapter master, and a land speeder tornado.

  21. #71
well I finished up the base for the speeder tonight. so that means one model finally finished and two more on the way.

I am VERY impressed! You have a unique colour scheme that really helps the models catch the eye. You have also done a good job of executing your painting to a high level.

    Don't lose interest.

is it me or does that landspeeder look like its about to clip the metal post debris thingy.
    @wulfen brother nice avatar

  25. #75
it is about to whack it but since I haven't perfected the technique of levitating little plastic models and I needed to ensure that it didn't slip I had to add a peg in front to hold it. It's also about to snag that sensor pod on the bottom.

Well, after a bit of a break I've gotten back into painting the chapter master. so far only the legs are 98% done but I've decided to switch up the color scheme a bit and do him entirely in metals with an emphasis on gold.

well cant tell if its the pic or not. but the gold dont look as good as I believe you can do it! I think it needs a darker shade. maybe a couple of very watered down brown inks washes may do a trick here?
anyway look forward to see more progress!

I think I washed out the pictures. The gold has a good bit more luster and deeper color than the pic is showing. Once I get the torso painted up I'll try to put up some better pics of it. either way once he's completely built it'll be easier to tell what areas need adjustment.

  33. #83
A bit more progress, got hte torso pretty much done and the arms mostly painted. Have to finish up the bolt pistol arm and the power sword before moving to the pauldrons and face.

That looks really good, what are you using for the Gold colour? Is it a mix of Brozen Brass and Shining Gold? Or just something else?

I really like the way you've used the Gold colour, it'll make your Chapter Master stand out on the battlefeild.

  35. #85
Thanks, I'm using scorched brown as a base and then painting on shining gold, working in some silver to highlight and then hitting the whole mess with brown ink before going back with shining gold again to bring out a few edges.

Where did the bling on his boots come from? I'd really love to get my hands on that...

Whoah that looks so tight! Very worn look to the metal. I like it. Hey question on the shin guards. When you press the GS into the mould, do you take it out while its still soft or wait for it to harden and then wrap it around the leg?

Holy crap, brilliant work on the Marines. It's nice (and rare) to see new schemes in action. It is also interesting to see that you paint first then assemble later - I always thought that was a little longwinded; but seeing the results I may revise that thought

  39. #89
@ Olgerth: The extra armor around the shins is a custom molded bit of greenstuff.

@Dr. Know: thanks! after I got the GS into mold and got the backing smooth I had to let it sit until it was almost set and then carefully pull it out and trim the armor, then I wrapped it around the legs and let it cure for a while. The same procedure was used for the plates around the hips.

@ground zero: Yeah, I find that it might take a bit longer but it makes it easier to get all the crack painted neatly without slopping paint everywhere. In the future I'll probably glue on the torsos do the whole as a unit though I don't find it takes too much extra time to have them entirely painted before gluing.

I looove the commander and his majestic scheme..

and I like the rest of the scheme ofc, but the only that kinda ruins it is the green.. it really just doesn't fit in IMO.. me and a couple of budds were talking about it and I think red would actually fit better ?

I mean the green looks sweet, but it's just s bit off

well maybe this is why I think it aint perfect... I know Im going to be harsh here. I have worked a lot with gold and I know sometimes it just wont do as I want. anyway I am guessing that you want a shiny bright gold for your master right? So I surgest that you go give the gold a layer or 2 of shining gold(thined a bit more than usual). and then highlight it with some layers with mithril silver mixed in. up to 50/50 max. this can bring the gold up to just a tad shinier and make him look even more glorius! and still have a nice deep depth in it.

  42. #92
Thats not harsh I only started painting not too long ago so I can't say I've got a perfect recipe for the gold. I did most of what you mentioned except the final highlight layer was shining gold instead of a 50/50 mix so I'll give it a go tonight and see how that works out. Overall though I'm not looking for a bright polished gold on him. He needs to stand out and be recognized as gold, but I want it to look more ancient like the armor has been passed down from chapter master to chapter master over the millennia. I also don't want it too polished because it's meant for combat and blinding the enemy isn't quite the order of the day.

  43. #93
ok tried a bit of the highlighting with hte gold and used it on the bolt pistol. I gotta say though I think what I had originally fits better with what I'm going for. I've also started work on the power sword, and I think I need to get a more intense green into it looking at it outside. Bolt pistol arm is done so that leaves finishing up the sword, backpack, head, and figuring out what I want to do with the should pads.

definitely try to make the green more intense
it looks way too dull to be a power sword
coming along great so far and i love the pose you gave him

  45. #95
Yeah, The green looked more intense under the lights but when I looked at it again the next day it seemed pale. I am trying to keep it somewhat more subdued in it's glow and and appear to sheath the sword.

maybe try to add a little bit of a goldish yellow to make it appear to glow?

Needs less black and more green. Then brighten it with some yellow or a tennis ball green colour. Then final highlight of tennis ball green. Its not really a colour but try to make it.

  48. #98
I got it finished up tonight, the earlier pic is just the underlying color layers before the glow was complete. I've hit it with straight goblin green and a mix of goblin green and yellow so it's a lot brighter now.

  49. #99
Seems as if I'm getting less and less time to paint these days. I did get the power sword brightened up and the arms glued on. That leaves the head, backpack and shoulder pads for my commander.

The sword looks great, the green is nice change form the usual electric blue you find on power weapons. Can't wait to see the completed model.
