Nesewdjet-Nedjety [5.25.2013 Epic Crusaders]

The Vindicators are not displayed in the correct order. You have 7, 8, 5, 6 in a row. This has ruined an otherwise excellent paintjob on some tiny Epic models. You are fired.

Any chance of a shot of the top? I'd like to see some of the detail you have up there as the front/sides/back of these things look great. Maybe set 'em next to a Marine to remind us just how small these are

Brilliant work again. One of these days I'll finish both of my 40k armies and get around to Epic. Do want.

Sorry, Justin, I guess I'll just have to strip them down and repaint!

In other news I finished my painting project for the weekend with the converted TLAC arm done and my first dreadnought finally completed. After probably 5 months of work on and off I present to you Venerable Brother Iret-ka, my chapter's first dreadnought. He was converted out of one of the AOBR dreads I have and eventually will have a second one converted as well as finishing up a seismic hammer arm to allow them to be used as Ironclad dreads as well. I hope you guys like him, I'd rate this as my most complex conversion project and probably one of my best paint jobs.

This really is brilliant work and the scheme makes me think of Warmachine in a big way. The colours anyway. That might have something to do with the Menoth model on my desk though....

I want to compliment your use of static grass on the base too. It's not overdone and it's very well clumped. Bravo!

Stunning work - clean, crisp detail - the only thing not to love is the scenic base - it's just, I dunno, a bit 'meh' compared to the rest of the model. Which is frankly absurdly good, so it's not really a problem.

Edit - I think it's a movement thing - the scenic bases' angle seems to imply a sense of motion to me, which the standard dread pose doesn't continue. On the next one, try implementing a waist modification to offset the angle - it may look better.

Thanks! You are right, the dread doesn't really have much motion to it. I noticed it after I'd finished up the majority of the conversion that the legs ended up fairly static but at that point I couldn't go back and adjust the position without compromising other aspects of the construction. I'm planning on making the second one have a more dynamic pose. He really needs to have have a slight bend in the knee on the TLAC side to give him a proper feeling of weight

I finished up the last of the commissioned vindicators so I'm on to land raiders and the last of the infantry before moving into the air component.

Love the dread. But you gotta look at the plasma cannon. Its a little bit lower than the other arm.

Causel, that's something I've noticed with the forgeworld stuff and dreadnoughts in general. I made sure that the holes were drilled exactly in the center of the existing mounting holes (had to make them a little smaller to fit properly) cast into the forgeworld bits. What seems to be the case is that forgeworld and GW make the shoulders different sizes. It's even more noticeable with the plasma cannon and CC arm where the shoulder on that one looks massive in comparison. If you look at the direct front shot, the barrels are the same height which I think is aesthetically better than aligning the tops of the shoulders.

To fix this for future models, Prometheus and I have made several dreadnought shoulder blanks that we plan to cast and scratch build the weapons onto.

Quick weekend project, I finally managed to get my hands of some of the old OOP epic marauders for a reasonable price and since all my other weekend projects were finished I decided to slap some paint on these guys. Tomorrow they get sealed and I'll probably move into some touchups of my 40k marine infantry. I pulled them all out the other day and I really need to add some contrast to some of the backpacks and fix the highlights on the helmets.

  12. #562
That is one big chin gun. It's nearly 1/3 the size of the plane. That's... impressive.

Not as impressive as the paintjob, of course - but that's not as funny.

  13. #563
hehe, well I assume that since it's a lascannon there is no recoil and it would work alright. I mean our own flying laser destroyer 747's "lascannon" takes up nearly the whole plane

  14. #564
Last week I pulled out all of my marines to take a shot including the dreadnought and was disgusted by the horrible quality on some part of the models. Thankfully I hadn't tried to do many techniques beyond what I was capable of so I don't have to repaint all of my infantry. What this did mean was that this last week was spent touching up all my older models. The first thing was to go back in with black and sharpen contrast, mainly on the wrists, bumplate, and feet. After doing that I went back and rehighlighted the helmets and weapons on all of my marines since the highlights never show up in any of my photos. The last bit was to hit a few areas of the helmets with black to clean up odd bits and touchup the white highlights on the feet, knees, and helmets where needed.

While I feel I could probably use a bit of touchup on the metals and definitely the eyes since some of the eyes hark back to the days when I didn't leave a black edge around the lenses, I didn't want to spend that much time right now and I'm still not happy with the effect I'm getting with the combination of blue I've been using for the eyes.

Anyway, now that I've written a book, here's the updated marines:

And the lone lascannon gunner that doesn't get used much these days:

The golden commanders are exceptional. They look amazing.
There we were, ready to charge the loyalist scum, and then suddenly we were under fire from our west flank. Batshit mental. We turn to return fire, and somehow they sneaked a bunker in, right next to us! We didn't have any meltas so we got the hell out of there. CREEEEED!

I would like to know your bronzy / brass / gold recipe. Is nice.

  18. #568
Thanks! The recipe really isn't too hard. Basically a black undercoat with straight dwarf bronze on top highlighted with a mix of bronze and burnished gold and washed with delvan mud. I think the final highlight had a touch of mithril in it too.

  19. #569
Ok, time for a new round of pics. This time it's Land Raiders and with another eight of them to go. RL has taken a toll and these took about a week longer than expected. Ah well. I think I'll be moving on to some skitarii now that I have an idea of where to go with the color scheme and especially now that the Skitarii list is coming into review.

  20. #570
And apparently the raiders don't generate much interest I'm always game for C&C!

Up this week is my first Skitarii Demi-century is finished though I think I'll adjust the color scheme a bit on the next one. However, I won't be doing them for a while yet since I want to use this coming week to get the two praetorian servator detachments worked up. I see them as being much quicker than the last century and I need to figure out how to distinguish the tech lord from the tech priest on this one.

The colors are somewhat different from the normal AdMech and the reason for this was to keep from the santa claus syndrom that happens at this scale when you paint a cloaked model red and add the white cog trim.

  21. #571
Close up shots on the Skitarri awesomeness, please and thank you.

As for the Raiders... I think we're so numbed by the endless doses of awesome that you just need to top yourself

I definitely see some old-style IG, but what other bits were used? GS hoods? These are fantastic...

  25. #575
Yeah, brilliant work, mate. Absolutely wonderful!

  26. #576
Thanks, the models though were sculpted by a friend of mine and cast in metal... outside of the old style IG I needed to fill the ranks so I could get two detachments out of each bag of them and enough to do the praetorian servators.

  27. #577
I love the look of this army, i wasnt soon keen on the picture picture i loked at however they quickly grow on me, the ven dread looks pretty damn sweet and looking the gothic fleet and epic army.

  28. #578
I've finished up both the Praetorian Combat Servator detachments. They just need to be varnished to knock back the shine a bit on some of the washes but I found I was out of the gloss varnish I use as my protective layer and I don't want to jot hit them with dull coat since these are game pieces. I'm trying out a bit different color scheme for the tech priests in the command stand to see if it works alright for the Tech lord's skitarii demi-century. Unfortunately these models seemed to lack detail on the back side and some ares were a little rough plus they didn't really lend themselves to any nice freehand bits on them. As combat servators though I think they turned out quite fine. I'm going to be taking a bit of a break from painting this next week to finish out some projects that were on hold the last couple of days but then I'll be back with the last of the land raiders before tackling the last of the skitarii.

    Detachment Two:

  29. #579
    Ahem. Close ups?

You should know that I'm going to ask by now :P

  30. #580
    Here you go

  31. #581
YAY! Thanks - these are some very cool looking little guys. I give them five thumbs up.

I did notice that one of the models is different (and now the song is stuck in my head). What's his story?

Is this a "counts as" army then?

  32. #582
The one different guy is because I'm massaging the two packs of ad mech infantry I picked up off the guy who sculpted it to get 2 skitarii detachments and two praetorian detachments rather than just two skitarii. Basically I was two models shy of being able to get three of the praetorians to a stand so I substituted two of the tracked skitarii you can see in the last skitarii detachment. I'm sort of counting these as commander stands with a tech priest who controls the servators but they have no in game benefit.

The army is actually built as an extension of my Titan legions force and will use the available Skitarii list for epic.

  33. #583
Well I surprised myself yesterday and today and managed to finish up the last of the ground vehicles for the commission with these eight land raiders. This leaves me with two tactical detachments before hitting the air and space components. I'll probably finish up the skitarii before I start in on those though and clean one more set of models off my painting table. I'm pretty happy with how the weathering turned out on them and I started more work on lettering at epic scales with Dorn and the Argus raider.

  34. #584
    *cough*

    "close up shots"

    *cough*

I'm sure that I will have something nice to say once you appease my need for close up shots

  35. #585
here you go, I wasn't planning on close shots because the photos turned out a tad blury this time:

  36. #586
A tad blurry, perhaps, but now we can see the wee tiny freehand!

Having gotten a few stands of Epic Eldar in the mini-exchange I find myself even more impressed by your work than I was to begin with. Really brilliant stuff!

  37. #587
Unfortunately you can't really see the word Argus on teh side of the first one because of the blurryness. It's kind of funny but the eldar epic models are a little larger than the marines and IG because they came out a bit later and the scale crept up a bit from 6mm.

  38. #588
Hey it's update time again and I've got skitarii... I even put in closeups so Mr. Justin doesn't have to ask meaning I won't get any responses at all

It's been a slow couple of weeks on painting but this now clears the table of my skitarii force until certain other items appear. I'll be back next week with more IF infantry and probably some speeders. Not much else will happen this week as I'm going out of town for a friends wedding and some other deadlines are coming due. Enjoy!

  39. #589
wow. i LOVE the dread. and great job on the skitarii, just how small are they?..

  40. #590
Thanks! the skitarii are epic scale which is 6mm... which doesn't really mean a whole lot so here's a quick comparison shot with a standard 40k marine.

  41. #591
O_O holy shit. those things are tiny..

  42. #592
I never fully realised how tiny that epic stuff is. Your painting is quite the accomplishment. I take my hat off for you. Good stuff

  43. #593
    YAY CLOSE UP PICS!

Great lookin' stuff again too. I'm really impressed by the gear dags on the cloaks. Nice work.

  44. #594
Thanks! My future plans for this force are to convert serveral ordinatus. Before that will probably be more IF stuff and the start to some necrons.

  45. #595
It's gettin slow in the painting forum if I haven't posted for a month and my thread is still on page two. I haven't dropped off the face of the earth; I've just had some pressing deadlines that had to be completed the past few weeks which has consumed most of my usual painting time. I've been slowly working up the next to last tactical detachment for a commission which I finally managed to finish up the basing for yesterday along with a few more land speeders for myself. Those speeders have a bit to go but should be done before the end of the week (grass on the bases, shoulder pads, weathering and so detail sharpening).

If you are wondering about the lack of the rear shot, I somehow managed to clip part of the image when I snapped it and I didn't feel it worked well enough to bother posting it.

Thanks, I'm sure though you could be fairly prolific if you painted mostly epic I was calculating up how much epic IF I've painted over the last year and including my own force I've literally painted up 5 companies worth of epic marines and all their vehicles. So by the time I'm done I'll have painted over half a chapter.

    Half a chapter, just brilliant!

If I were home, I'd be staring at the Warlord torso still separated from it's legs and a company of Steel Legion still on sprues at the back of the work bench, taunting me. No sir, I am jealous not only of your talent, but also your commitment and the time to perform so admirably with your commitment.

Well, to finish out the projects on the table for the week, here's those 5 landspeeders. Now I have enough to use two detachments if I want. On to the IF strike cruiser now.
