Nesewdjet-Nedjety [2.18.2013 Epic Reaver Update]

  1. #851
thanks, the other three really won't be as much work as this guy though. The awesome gets a simple leg repose and torso twist. The shadow hawk will get little more than cleanup and adjustments on the shoulder cannon and wrist laser, and the rifleman will get a running pose.

I don't mean to double post, but comments seem to have dried up a bit in recent months. It's been a grueling couple of weeks finishing up these speeders. I'd planned on two weeks to do all 18 but last week too almost the entire week for prep so little paint made it to the models. I did manage to finish up the models by monday night, but I had to wait till tonight seal them. I think that this will be the last set of GW speeders in the modern style I will paint. I'm constantly disappointed with them and trying to get the weapons to stick. I was a little annoyed at how they were painting up too, but I guess they turned out alright. Next up I'll be finishing up my strike cruisers.

Fantastic painting as always. Those Land Speeders are amazing.

thanks! I like to think they might crack a 7 on CMON for epic stuff

I've been trying to get the lances built up so that I'll be ready to paint them and I won't need to spend a lot of time in between for prep so I've been trying to get one mech posed and ready in between painting projects. With the thunderbolt done, I decided to move on to the awesome since it required a bit more time being metal to repose. Anyway, after yesterday and today, here it all ready for basing material to be glued on and primer.

Yes, it's been ages since I posted. No I haven't done a whole lot either. But I CAN finally say these strike cruisers are now complete which is great news for me. They've also been the longest running paint project for me. Mainly I wanted to push things a bit in terms of blending so I resolved to use no washes or drybrushing on the models. I even decided to do engine glow which I typically avoid although I couldn't bring myself to highlight the models up to pure white. Hope you enjoy them. Now I can move back to some commission mechs and some of my own for a while. I'll be posting some better shots of one of the BC and one of the regular SC later.

These are the Bombardment cannon versions that swap the LB for a S5 BC

    These are the regular SC.

They look lovely as usual. One question though, did you modify the strike crusiers yourself, or is there a conversion kit somewhere on the internet for them? as they look significantly better than the ones GW produce (im loving the slightly angled side armour plates in particular)

  7. #857
Thanks It's a bit of both. A friend of mine on resin addict constructed and cast the bits for me off a CAD sketch I made. They were originally intended for use on the FW strike cruiser to make it a bit more in line with the BB and other Marine gear. You might ask nicely if he's got anything left.

Ah cool. And they did look rather familiar to me but i couldnt place my finger on what (The Grey Knight SC from FW)

Update for the weekend. It took a bit of work, but I've gotten the next six mechs ready to go. Four of these are for myself and will be painted olive drab as a Eridani Light Horse lance and the other two are commission pieces of a crab and king crab.

On the rifleman, this was a pretty intensive repose... which looks great from every angle except full on left where the legs appear too close together. It doesn't look like there is anything I can do about it since it appears the thigh area on the Rifleman is too short to correctly separate the legs and I'm already at the max rotataion for the joint before it hits the hip.

another group of mechs done for a client. He wanted two crabs painted up in the same LG theme I'd done before but without house markings. Pics ended up a bit fuzzy and oddly dark, but I think the shading turned out fairly well.

Just going back through this thread for inspiration since I'm currently working on a commission that's likewise a relatively smallish scale. Now that I've recently done some assembly and painting myself on stuff so small, the fact that you do Epic, Battlefleet Gothic, and Battletech stuff to such consistently high standards of painting and conversion is even more amazing than I thought previously!

    Carry on...

P.S. You might not get a lot of comments in this thread but your work is always stellar. (It's kinda hard to keep posting 'that's awesome!' over and over again without it getting stale.)

  13. #863
Thanks, I know it sounds odd, but occasionally I'll look back at where I started to see how I've improved over the years. I think, though, my next move is going to be to invest in an airbrush. I just can't compete with the speed they can get the underlying shading done and ready to build up by hand. This is especially true when I did the larger rhinos earlier in the thread and since I'm looking to do two land raiders as well to finish up the army, the airbrush is looking better all the time

"That's awesome!" Nope, doesn't seem stale to me. *grin*

hehe, thanks. These are now with the client, unfortunately Customs opened the package and was none too kind to the models within Frustrating, but what can you do? At least they were fairly easy for him to repair.

  16. #866
It's been a bit, but these guys were actually done a few weeks ago. I've just been waiting for the decals to arrive so I could finish them out. Anyway, this is my Eridani Light Horse lance. I think the pics turned out a bit too yellow. The green is a bit more grayish in person. I'm down to one Inner Sphere lance and two clan stars on my collection left to paint.

  17. #867
They don't appear overly yellowish in the pics, but I'd have to see them with my own eyes to be able to spot the difference.

Definitely looking 'Awesome'. Heh, heh... why isn't anybody laughing?

I'm still finding myself completely floored by the subtle gradiations you can get on such a small scale, it all just works really well together.

  18. #868
I really like how you cleaned them up. I cant do that quality of small model work with platicard and rods yet. I am trying though. I really like how you posed them, and the painting came out very nice. Did you get transfers for the light horse badges from piranha games?

  19. #869
Thanks! I should have said that the tint of green in real life is more of a grayish green than a bright yellow green that the pics seem to think it is. One day I'll just get a real light box and be done with it.

Irish: thanks, I did get the transfers from Piranha games. I do have to say I'm not overly impressed. The service does say 4-6 weeks for delivery which is right about what it takes and it makes them really slow. Second, I was afraid that they were printed using transfer paper on a laserjet printer like the kind of stuff you can do on your own. The problem with that is the toner can get scraped off on the top and you lose bits of the decal. On seeing some lines in some of the decals on the sheet and running a test it does appear that the decal can be scraped off which is unfortunate. For the cost of the sheet, around 5.50 USD. I'd say you'd have them done cheaper and get more decals just buying some sheets yourself and printing them.

well, it's been awhile. All manner of things conspired to make sure I've had no rest and not much time for painting. I've got to say these almost had me quit painting for a good long while too. Somehow after I was 90% finished I realized I'd painted the scheme inverted and I was prepared to strip them down and start over. Thankfully the client suggested a different scheme which only put their completion off by a week. All in all they didn't turn out horrible for a higher end table top quality job. These are painted up as Wolf in Exile Beta.

There were minor conversions on these for pose and giving the hellstar some beefier torso PPC's. I believe that the next couple of weeks will be spent prepping a large number of models for painting since we are hitting the cold season soon and I don't want to mess with priming outside.

  21. #871
Love them. You continue to inspire me sir. Have you seen the new drop zone commander models?

  22. #872
Thanks, and no I really haven't see the drop Zone commander stuff. I've been locked away trying to finish out client projects and other work so I can concentrate on my last two grad projects and graduate this december.

  23. #873
    Good luck to you sir.

  24. #874
minor update. I've been slowly prepping models and I'm almost finished. Just a bit more to resculpt on a reaver titan and I'm good. anyway, part of what I've been readying are 9 of the 14 mechs left to paint. They are finally primed and ready to go when I get to them this winter. I'd do the last five but I'm a bit burned out on chopping up mechs, reposing them and sculpting. The clan star doesn't look it but there's been a considerable amount of work in cleaning the bits and fixing casting issues as well as reposing. The Dire Wolf had a lot of filling and sanding on the legs and the barrels on the arms replaced while the Nova had the PPC's fabricated and sculpted.

This IS lance is also pretty heavy on the conversions. Both marauders were chopped up and reposed to prevent their falling over backwards pose and fix the silly extended arms. The rifleman had almost every joint cut to repose and the warhammer had a heck of a time with the arms to get them to bend properly and look good in most of the viewing angles.

    The wolf star:

just a note on exactly how crazy my life has been since thanksgiving. These 8 were finished that weekend and I haven't had time to even take pics to post much less pick up a brush to do anything.

This finishes up my colossus robots for epic. These guys are based on US pennies.

  26. #876
I really enjoy the depth of transition you acquire with such small surfaces. What brand of brush do you enjoy most for such work vaaish? I use Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Miniature Brushes.

  27. #877
Thanks. I've been using a Winsor Newton Artists water color sable round 00 for everything lately

  28. #878
Do you feel that your brush holds its point well while also retaining enough paint for say an epic titan or size-able mech panel?

  29. #879
Time to dredge up this thread. Now that the holidays are over I'm back with a little bit of painting. This is the start to the third and final epic reaver titan and it's planned to be a rather special piece. As such the base got far more attention than is typical. Next up are the legs.

  30. #880
    very cool start.

Mmmm, good to see you updating things again. Poor lil Chimera, maybe he shouldn't have been standing there.

  32. #882
Yeah, this piece is a commission and a special piece. I wanted to add a touch with a chimera painted up in the scheme of the guys usual opponent.

  33. #883
Well after weeks without an update I'm finally able to present the lower half of the Titan now known as Praetorian. I'll be finishing up his knee armor this week before I set him aside for a while to work on some other things since I need a bit of a break from this intensity of painting. The time spent hasn't been idle time either; it took a week to nail down sketches of what the patterns would look like on the legs and more time than I care to mention to paint it.

Now someone needs to buy the Forgeworld model and commission you to replicate Praetorian on THAT scale!
Me - Dude! Don't eat that (habanero beef jerky), it's friggin' hot as f*ck!!!
Tim - Oh, it's not baaaaa...aaaaa....aaaa.....aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! It's like the devil p*ssed in my mouth!!!

  35. #885
Hah! I could never do a 40k scale titan, I'd need to use an airbrush for that and I need far more practice with that and oil washes before I even touch something that large. Not to mention this particular pattern would need a lot more subtle detail in the empty space to look good scaled up.

This is a relatively small update but it does mark the completion of everything below the waist of the titan. I'll be setting this project aside for a bit until I can finish up 7 Epic Crusader robots and my Battletech Wolf star. The next stage with Praetorian will be the torso and head. That will leave only the weapons and shoulders after a second break for my last Inner Sphere lance.

  36. #886
So I'm finally done with probably the crappiest thing I've painted in quite a while. These guys had far more issues than they should have from over complex paint mixes to having too little contrast and finally failing to even get a half decent photo. I may try again for individual shots as soon as I figure out some light setup that doesn't instantly erase all highlights and make them look like a three year old spit painted them.

Maybe they look different in person, but this lance doesn't look as bad as you make them out to be ahah. I find they still look nice
