You ... converted? ... Epic infantry.

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

I'm not sure what to say, so thank the webgods for smilies!

I can't even hold these things without breaking them.
Imagine you noticed some termites over at your neighbors house, and instead of warning him about it, you just burn down his house because of the slight possibility that those termites might someday move over to your home. That's the Eldar for you. -Aquila

Thanks! To be honest, the conversions were made much simpler by doing most of the trimming on the blades before separating them and then doing the final sharpening once they were attached to the models. That let me have a better grip on them while I worked.

With my grad show finally up and the opening over, I got time to finish up the last necron phalanx. I'll be hitting more of the IF thunderchickens starting next week, so there will be a bit of a break before I return to start in on the obelisks.

  6. #656
I present the last of the IF thunderpidgeons. These two mark the end of the FW thunderhawks of the IF commission and leaves me with 4 more IF models to go. Before I hit those my goals for the next couple of weeks are to knock out the 10 obelisks I need for my Cron army and put together a 28mm marine for a DIY chapter swap. It may be a few weeks until I get pics up of the obelisks since I'm not sure how long Likto takes to do custom work. (no, they really aren't that special, I just wanted acrylic bases rather than wood.)

Does anyone else find it disturbing that his Epic Thunderhawks look better than many of the full-sized ones? As usual, amazing stuff!
Me - Dude! Don't eat that (habanero beef jerky), it's friggin' hot as f*ck!!!
Tim - Oh, it's not baaaaa...aaaaa....aaaa.....aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! It's like the devil p*ssed in my mouth!!!

    Thanks guys!

With a few epic scale projects cleared out (they will show up here as soon as I get bases to put them on), I've spend the last couple of days putting together for the DIY chapter swap over on Bolter and Chainsword. Overall I'm pretty happy with everything, but I may go back and swap out the weapon for one off the old 3rd edition sprue for variety. It will be another few weeks till I get to painting him though.

With yet another day going by and a sorry lack of delivered bases (I have tracking confirmation, just the USPS is being unreasonably slow this week shipping them from where ever they are coming from) I've had to postpone some of my plans for the weekend. With this being a build week I had planned on getting a 40k marine mini for a painting swap built, two of the FW Thunderhawk transports for Cal built and washed in prep for painting in the next week or so as well as finishing the prep work on the monoliths and three cron objectives. I'd really wanted to finish up the bases for the obelisks so that could be marked done, but with no bases showing up in the mail, that means I won't be assembling two of the cron objectives or the bases for the obelisks.

If all goes well the monoliths will be ready for painting after this evening. In the mean time, I'll just leave it with the Cron tomb Complex/ blitz objective I did get built this week

Very snazzy. Are the decidedly Necron looking obelisks also from the aforementioned Necron fan vendor?

  12. #662
No, these are of my own design, though I got him to cast them for me with my decided lack of casting equipment. In other news, my bases finally arrived as well as a small wraith like nightbringer proxy! This will make for a very good week!

  13. #663
Well I got the bases and finished them up last night. Today I had to do a few touch ups since the bases ended up being darker than I'd planned and I needed to break the models from them a bit more. I also primed two of the thunderhawk transports for painting next week or so.

The real reason for this post though is the pics of the obelisks all finished. I have enough done for one obelisk detachment and the remaining four are split between two Monolith detachments that are yet to be finished. (primed and ready to go, just not done yet.) That leave me 7 models to paint, two more objectives and the scratch build of the wraiths.

    and a closeup:

  14. #664
Well since you're now in the habit of providing close-up shots I suppose I have to start demanding super macro close-up shots or something

Great work as usual - and the milled Necron pieces look great!

  15. #665
I guess I'll just need to start dropping the closeups so you'll have something to ask for then. :P

How about close-up side views and top views just to keep Mr. Justin happy?

I just love this thread. Your epic painting is a lot better than my 28mm!

  17. #667
Thanks! Well today was pretty busy. I've started in on painting up the thunderhawk transports and I built the last two necron objectives as well as priming them and the nightbringer model. On top of that I managed to finish painting up the Tomb Complex that counts as the necron Blitz objective.

No rest for a bit, but the end is in sight for this necron force. Just the nightbringer, 6 monoliths, 2 objectives, and three stands of wraiths

  18. #668
I'm now down to two landers remaining of the IF stuff for my commission. After a fair bit of craziness attempting to paint up all six monoliths, two objectives, and the two landers, the landers won out and I finished them up today just in time to head out for a couple days with the family for Thanksgiving.

I must say, the landing clamps are some of the most fiddly bits to get in place since FW didn't exactly make the tolerances good on them or really mark placement well. I think they assumed you'd put the raider in first, glue on the clamps, and then put the wings on before you painted it.

Anyway, I'm hoping to get the rest of the cron stuff done next week in preparation for the Nightbringer. Following that will be the DIY swap 40k mini and then the remaining landers.

  19. #669
Ok so this is going to be quite a massive Necron post. Hopefully tomorrow night I'll take a pic of the battleforce for epicomp. Anyway, after much toiling on the monoliths which somehow appeared deceptively simple and quick to paint I've got them finished and ready to go. That leaves me with the Nightbringer to paint and 9 wraiths to sculpt for the three stands I need to complete the 3k cron army. That said, If the weather is above 50F I'll be working on the DIY swap mini this coming week as well as assembling the last two thunderhawk landers for my commission. If not, I'll be painting the nightbringer and assembling models. Also on the list this week were the two remaining Necron objectives which are now finished

First set with their obelisks in formations:

    And the second group:

    And the objectives:

I continue to be in awe of your work. Truly I am.

You have also inspired me to consider carving up a 40K size monolith to craft into a pylon obelisk akin to your epic work.

    DOUBLE POST - 30Nov

Yes, I meant obelisk. Clearly not pylon, (and that is a nice pylon you have in the pix below, btw. And I don't mean that in an Eddie Haskel sort fo way. *GRIN*)

Thanks, I'll be curious to see how that 40k obelisk turns out (I think that's what you are referring to). Since tonight is a prep and photo night, I've just a got a brief post with a small necron group shot. Once I finish the nightbringer and wraiths I'll do a better full army shot.

  22. #672
Well, I'm finally done with the nightbringer and this brings me to 2850 points painted for necron. I'm only lacking the last three stands of wraiths for this army to be "complete". In any event, I'll be moving onto a 40k marine for the DIY swap on Bolter and Chainsword next. I'm also putting in a shot showing how big the nightbringer is next to a 40k marine.

Ok, so sick paint job if you hadn't done any extra lighting, but to then do all of the eyes on the scarabs and have that glow and the glow from the scythe spread onto the lower half of the model... FFS, dude... that's amazing.

Thats ridiculous! Did you make that nightbringer yourself? Or is that an actual epic model?

I'm under the impression that this is all converted. GW does not make Epic Necrons. You may have missed the prior post (I did), but then I went on a mad crusade to see if I could find ANY Epic Necrons and they are all conversions or brought in from other game systems that are along the same scale. Suffice it to say that between this and the Skitarii cohort, I've never been more impressed with conversions... And of course the painting throughout the whole thread makes me nauseous, it's so good...[COLOR="Silver"]

  26. #676
Thanks! I had contemplated sculpting my own but decided that it would take too long to do when another guy on the tactical command forums had sculpted a pretty decent alternative so I convinced him to send me one. That's what you are seeing here. I did have to go back in and fix a bit with the musculature on the chest and if I'd thought about it a bit more I'd have shrunk down his shoulder as well.

As always, you put some sick work into these guys. They are just amazing, esp knowing how small they all are. A lifetime of kudos and praise would never be enough.

  28. #678
Thanks! Slight update, I've been a lazy bum and didn't make any progress last night. Mostly the reason I was lazy was I ended up doing most of the remaining Christmas shopping... perhaps tonight there will be progress.

  29. #679
I made some progress to night on the DIY swap marine from over on Bolter and Chainsword. With a bit of effort I finished up the head. Decided to spend some time working with some different colored metals as well as eyes since I don't typically experiment there. Same with the flesh. Overall I'm fairly happy with the result.

Looks very nice, especially the metals.
Though the human eye makes him look like he was just stabbed.

Or is just really scared of something. But the colours look really nice! How did you do the skin?

  32. #682
I think I need to make the iris/pupil larger to fill the space more so he doesn't look like he has his eyes open so wide. The skin was all kinds of crazy stuff. Started out with a mix of black, scab red, and a touch of blue. worked in to dark flesh and then worked in elf flesh until I had a hint of dark flesh. Added white to that and ended with white highlight and a touch of bleached bone. glazed it with a mix of delvan mud and sepia and glazed the lower lip with dark flesh.

The scar was a mix of scab red and elf flesh and then a sharp highlight of white with a touch of scab.

  33. #683
Well time for another update. This guy is nearly done, tomorrow afternoon I'll be painting his banner which will probably take all afternoon to finish up. In the mean time, here's the rest of him assembled and ready to go minus a few touchups and some markings on the knee pads.

  34. #684
And he's done! I wasn't sure I'd be able to finish this guy up tonight. The banner took far longer than I'd anticipated.

  36. #686
Well after far too long and more models than I care to count right now, I present the last two models of the IF commission I've been working on the last couple of years. (did I just say that!?!!). Granted they haven't all been consecutive and I've done some work finishing a couple of my own armies and three large 40k vehicles one of which was a fairly heavy bit of converting, but I'm now done with Phase one of the commission. If weather holds tomorrow I'll go ahead and finish sealing them and then prep them for shipping.

At this point, I don't think I'm going to paint much yellow for a bit. And I'm going to move back to BFG to finish up a blackstone fortress that's been sitting on my shelf for a year or more. Hope you enjoy it!

  37. #687
I'm back after an extremely overdue completion of my Blackstone fortress. I mark this as one of my better failures. Some things worked out alright like the difference in shading on the top vs the underside but overall it really isn't one of the best models I've painted. I consider it a failure partly because I messed up the gold by making it too bright and was too annoyed to properly repaint it to the reddish tone and partly because I assumed I'd already cleaned the model and found a bunch of flash and other imperfections after I'd already primed it.

My goal here was to pull both from the eldar and necron influences to come up with something that was a bit different than the typical BLACK blackstone fortress. Hence, the interior is a reddish metal and the exterior is more of a bone color. To achieve the namesake black stone, I decided to leave the capstone of the pyramid black. I may yet go back and adjust a few things but here it is.

  38. #688
You see, this is why I like only having the time to drop by the forum every few days. I take a little break and I come back to incredible new works from one of my favorite artists. Complete with close-up shots!

Really great work - and a wonderful build on the bionic leg.

Thats a really nice take on the Blackstone fortress.

  41. #691
Thanks! Now, I move back to finishing out my 40k razorback turrets.

  42. #692
Another project done.... or at least mostly so. The hulls in the pic might seem a little familiar to those of you following my thread and you would be right to think so. All this update is for is the turret plate and HB turrets on top to let me swap out the rhinos for razorbacks.

I had originally planned on doing these stock but I just couldn't abide the targeter bit sticking up so far on a rather short turret so I chopped one up and added the lens bits in the middle making a much cleaner looking turret.

I'd also planned on doing a bit of freehand on the doors in the middle, but my original idea didn't seem to fit and I'm at a loss of what else to do so I left it blank to fill in once I get inspired at a later date.

That is one amazing looking razorback. Absolutely love the Egyptian theme for your army.

  45. #695
Thanks! The hulls were something I'd already done, all this update was for is the top plate and turret

  46. #696
Why is the turret plate on upside down and backwards?

  47. #697
It's not. Take a look at the razorback on the GW site or the one on the cover of the box. The side with the raised plate and exhaust grille is used for the predator.

  48. #698
Well, this has been a somewhat frustrating week. Last week I ran out of white primer which meant I had to make a run to the LGS to pick up more. Unfortunately, when I tried the can at home, there was something messed up with it and it clogged the nozzle within a half second of pressing down. A replacement nozzle and some fiddling failed to produce a working can. Since I'd grabbed the last can while I was there last and the next shipment was slated to come in today, I didn't get much painting done. Today when I came in, they were still out but more is supposed to arrive next week. In the mean time, I've started tackling a project that's been sitting on my table for some time: the Ordinatus Minorus for my AdMech army. At this point, most of the work on the chassis is done and I'm prepping to build the two Quake Cannons and CLP to go on top but I thought I'd go ahead an post an in progress shot for now. There are two more identical models not shown here (though both of those are lacking the turrets which are currently in a mold waiting for the GS to cure.

  49. #699
    Such detail!

    ... What is it?
    *Galactic conquest is -here- *

  50. #700
it's the chassis to an ordinatus minorus. They still need the main weapon mount and cannon built.
