Company of Heroes Error Codes Explained

jlunderville helped me compile this list for everyone to help explain some of the error codes. Please note that these workarounds are unofficial and we can't guarantee they will work. This is just based on what we have seen in the forums in the past couple days.

10028 - Game Explorer problem.

Happens when: You have Vista and possibly installed OF over COH, possibly over a patched COH.
Simplest workaround: Install to a different folder.

10104 - Patching encountered unexpected installed data.

Happens when: You have mods installed.
Simplest workaround: Reinstall COH, patch again.

10216 - Our error message code is broken.

Happens when: Either Company of Heroes is running, or the patcher couldn't find their COH install (possibly you installed from Steam, copied their installation manually to another computer, or you have a pirated version).
Simplest workaround: Shut down COH (try using the task manager CTRL ALT DEL). If that doesn't work reinstall and patch again.

10148 - A file in the patcher is corrupt.

Happens when: You have a bad download, or your computer is busted.
Simplest workaround: Use a download manager to re-download the file from a reputable source. Check the md5sum of the file to make sure it's right.

10260 - The COH MSI isn't installed.

Happens when: You install one of the COH 1.x megapatches and you didn't install from the original COH DVD (possibly you installed from Steam, copied your installation manually to another computer, or you have a pirated COH).
Simplest workaround: Reinstall COH, patch again.

10104 - Patching encountered unexpected installed data.

Happens when: You have mods installed.
Simplest workaround: Reinstall COH, patch again.

If you see this error even after reinstalling once or twice, take your DVD back to the store, it's probably bad. If that doesn't help, the problem may be your DVD drive. In rare cases this could also be caused by other bad hardware, like bad RAM or a flaky motherboard.

Some people claim that updating their DVD drive firmware or using a different drive helps. If you can copy the files off the DVD from another computer and install from your hard disk, that may also work.

If you have the English version of OF (but not Australian), you can verify that your computer can read the DVD using the md5summer tool. Download md5summer from http://www.md5summer.org/, navigate to your OF DVD, and select "Verify", using the attached rc16.md5.txt file.

Here are instructions with screenshots in case (like most people) you find the md5summer interface a little confusing.

Note that on UK disks the Data\install.lua file will not verify correctly due to a last-minute change. This is normal and probably doesn't indicate a problem.

10148 - A file in the patcher is corrupt.

Happens when: You have a bad download, or your computer is busted.
Simplest workaround: Use a download manager to re-download the file from a reputable source. Check the md5sum of the file to make sure it's right.

There's at least one report of this error coming up during installation from the DVD. If this consistently happens to you during installation, then you need to try the steps above.

Despite me saying in Post #2 that nobody else aside from Relic staff should post here, folks still have been.
I'm sorry if you are experiencing an error, but please follow the protocol and create a thread with the appropriate files (see signature for file info).

Further non-Relic or non-staff additions to this thread will not be viewed so lightly - so please take note, and avoid posting on this thread - THANKS.

Some people have been having a problem where they do a system restore or their machine reboots during the CoH megapatch application, and they end up with a system that doesn't have CoH properly installed, and they can't reinstall.

This applies to people reinstalling the original CoH 1.0, NOT CoH: OF or CoH: Game of the Year edition.

The error is something like, "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove this product, use add/remove program in control panel."

I've attached a batch file which should clear up the remaining junk. Download the file to your desktop, rename it from .txt to .bat, and run it.

BE WARNED that if you have an original CoH installed, this batch file will uninstall it. Otherwise it should be harmless.

10267 - The RelicCOH.exe on your computer is different from what the patcher expects.

Usually this means you are running the wrong patch, but it could also be caused by a bad DVD or any of the other things that cause error 10104 (see above).

10199 - Shortcut couldn't be created.

This sometimes happens randomly, I'm guessing due to disk corruption or because you're installing through a user account that doesn't have access to a required folder (either the global Start Menu folder or the Game Explorer folder).

However, it's more likely that you live in Taiwan and bought the Chinese version of OF, and you run Windows Vista. Opposing Fronts doesn't install in this configuration.

Here's a possible workaround.

10212 - Something went wrong installing a Windows Installer component.

Probably you're installing over old CoH and your Windows Installer database somehow got corrupted.

At least one person has reported that reinstalling their original CoH (without uninstalling first) fixed the problem.

If that doesn't work, here's something to try, no guarantees:

Uninstall Company of Heroes (if you can), then use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all entries named "Company of Heroes".

Warning: MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. The cleanup utility can make a mess of your computer if you use it to uninstall things randomly. ALWAYS TRY TO REMOVE SOFTWARE VIA THE ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS CONTROL PANEL FIRST! This is a tool of last resort.
