[British] Carpiquet: The Airfield - Mission 4

    Carpiquet: The Airfield

The Royal Commandos have established a front line; it is time for 3rd Battalion and the Royal Canadian Rifles to eliminate any remaining Axis forces and take the Airfield.

Did you walk into the hangars? My guess is you need to move in, not only killing everything in there from outside, to activate a trigger. I think there was a marker in every hangar?

  4. #4
I have done that, and moved in set up camp and everything touched the markers and nothing.......

Hi I played this mission 3 times before I get the hang of it. You can clear all map BUT gather your troops in front of hanger near the airstrip if objective "CLEAR HANGARS" not complete, DO NOT KILL THE PLANES in the 3rd hanger near the Tower cause will not get the secundary mission objective to kill the planes, and you`ll get and x on that objective at the end. The german units will spam in hangars (infantry and couple of PIV). Gather your units armor and infantry near the airstrip make sure you do not see inside Hangars. If you clear the map, conquer everything else and stay near hangars and see nothing to kill and that man shout to clear them the objectives WILL NEVER be completed. Just send your troops near airstrip on the opposite side of hangars and if you come back in a minut or so you`ll find german units in hangars and you`ll be able to complete the mission.
About the commando objective you`ll get it if you manage to land 2 gliders in previous mission and succeded to destroy tank fuel and generator, and commandos survive in that case the commandos will apear after you`ll get clear of enemy counterattack and you`ll get objective to save them.

This was by far the most annoying mission of the new campaigns.

I somehow messed up the saved states between missions, so even though I got the parachute medal for using commandos to take out the fuel point in mission 3, I never received the objective to rescue them in mission 4. Thanks to dodo, I realized I should replay mission 3.

I also didn't understand that if you let the planes take off, you're supposed to shoot them down with AA emplacements! The stupid planes kept trashing my tanks over and over, but I didn't realize I should shoot them down until my 3rd playthrough. I know the secondary mission objective changes to "shoot down the planes," but it should probably be made more clear.

Oh well, got all the medals now.

  7. #7
Damn, I didn't get the mission to save the commando squads, because I retreated them after they blew their objectives. Oh well, at least I got 2 more commando squads with shrecks to help defend with.

I was going really well on this one... until I realised that I needed to drop two gliders up north of the map.

Id reached my pop-cap, hadnt I

Restart - no problems after that.

I am having trouble " neutralized the turrets". I send commandos and the remaining tetrach tanks and i can secure one. But then the 5 minutes is up and the Axis just run over my defense in the 2nd waves... Their planes kill all 3 captured '88s....

Just how bugged is this mission?

I've tried to beat this mission three times, the first two times no matter what I did nothing would spawn in the hangers. I would withdrawn my troops to various parts of the airfield keeping the hangers out of my line of sight, wait five, ten minutes and move in only to find nothing. On my first try the middle hanger for no reason was marked as clear.

Yesterday I decided I'd try it a third time, again the middle hanger was marked cleared for no reason and there where no Germans spawning in the hangers. So I pulled back waited a bit and moved in and low and behold I found Germans in all three hangers (even the one marked cleared)! I was ecstatic and happily mowed them down, only to watch another squad spawn every time I killed a squad... I kept killing them and they kept spawning. No more than two German squads at a time where active in any hanger but the instant one squad died another would replace it.

I pulled back, waited 10 minutes just to see if that had any effect, than moved back in and found two squads in each hanger and every time I killed them they respawned. After a half an hour of this I was bored and built some Vicker's MG positions, this had the effect of stopping the Germans from Spawning completely and the instant I deleted a MG position the Germans came right back.

Now bored to tears and needing to go and pick my girlfriend up from the train I left my men in position in the Hangers killing Germans. An hour and a half later I came home to find... yeah my guys killing Germans.

How the heck am I supposed to beat this mission? Should I not rush in and rescue the commandos am I moving to fast for the computer to spawn troops in the Hangers? Should I not use artillery to destroy the bunkers?

    Anything?

How did you have troops left after an hour and a half of constant German assault? I mean, seriously..

Er.. I've never encountered this problem.. Might be worth trying to go back to Mission 3 and finishing it again, and then see if the problem persists... If you kept loading a savegame from beyond a certain point (even if its the beginnign of the level), it might be that this is corrupted.. I had a (kinda) similar problem on one of the PE missions, in which I couldnt wire a bridge that had to be destroyed, and I simply had to restart the mission..

To answer your question, LMG-42s, lots of cover, armor support. I won't say I didn't lose anyone but there where still guys alive and kicking when I came back.

I've been playing it from the beginning from the menu as opposed to continuing a saved game, that's why I've gotten slightly different results. I actually tried the mission again last night and got the same no one spawn in the hangers.

Before I left for work this morning I started and beat mission 3 and am just straight continuing to 4 and crossing my fingers that it'll work this time. Honestly though if it dosen't... :shrugs: I'm done, I'm not wasting my time with this anymore. I'll just go back to playing DOW: DC and try to beat my friend

Its just that if I had the ability to keep troops alive for that long on, say, Carentan counter-attack, it would be awesome..
hmm.. That seems a shame.. I don't really know what to suggest then....

I am still stuck on this mission

I have replayed it multiple times and It doesn't matter if I take everything over in the map except the markers by the hangers, I can't get the mission complete saying the hangers were cleared

    any suggestions?

It seems to me like it's a bug that's causing this but maybe it's just needing to be done in a specific way, it's just really frustrating.

    any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

I need help with this stupid level! I have also replayed three times to get the special air service badge for saving the commandos, I keep saving commandos and put them in the building next to the generators and they turn white and yet when I finish the level I never get this badge for saving them. WTF do they want? What are you supposed to do? very frustrating. To add insult to injury, I have never had a problem with the hangers, they are full of enemy with a tank each, I just start at the bottom and roll upwards a squad at a time obliterating every thing with artillery. When I get to the tower I never have to kill them all because they go into panic retreat and the tower automatically falls without me capping it.

Please anybody, what am I doing wrong with save commandos and the badge...

Found a solution on a different forum, it works with 2.300, tested and all fine.

Open you documents folder where you'll find the My Games folder...

Enter the directory of the 2nd expansion campaign which is:
    My Games\Company of Heroes\Savegames\RelicCOH\Campaigns\cxp1

Open campaignstate.lua with notepad or a text editor of your choice.

The first 2 lines will be:

    campaignid = "cxp1"
    maxmission = 3

If you are stuck on the airfield it means that the max number of available missions in this campaign is 4 (mission 0, 1, 2 and 3)

Now here is the simple fix... Backup the campaignstate.lua file jsut in case... Then edit the number 3 to 4 and save the file.

Start up CoH:OF and instead of pressing continue campaign then jsut enter the mission selection on the campaign and you'll see the Secure Airfield mission is now tagged Completed, and the next mission on Hill 112 will be available for you.
The actual reason why it bugs is because:

actually error is in mission before that...you must not have more units than youre allowed to have or that attack on hangars will fail. i passed the game today and i didn't cross the limit and it went good.
In other words, you cheated =) Which is cool, because I cheat too, I like to have floods and floods of commandos, it's great =D

Anyway I hope that helps. Good luck with Hill 112:Saving Sanity! (Next mission)

    Normal level.

If you want to build as many units as possible in the first 5 minutes, make sure 88mm guns are not occupied. I am not sure if this is a bug, I did a test, before an 88mm gun is occupied, the population is 55, after the 88mm gun is occupied by a three member crew, the population become 63, it takes an extra 8 population.

In the first 5 minutes, build defense/units, repair weapons… With three 88mm guns, captured and new-built AT, MG, light tanks, the defense part is not too difficult. Just remember to repair weapons ASAP.

When defense part is over, send two tanks to the hangar to destroy all airplanes in it.
Send units to the right side yard to rescue commando team(for the medal). Repair the Pantherturm(destroyed in last mission) then occupy it, it will help the fight in the yard.
Build howitzer in the yard, then creeping barrage all enemy occupied positions.

    Hope this is helpful.

I discovered at the start of the level you can bring in Tetrach tanks so before capturing all 4 strategic points I kept bringing the tanks until my manpower ran out. I had a pop cap of 260/60 and they are all carried over to the next mission. As you can imagine it wasn't difficult. I got the medal by saving the commandoes who are hiding in the building. The medal objective disappears from the screen but it will come back eventually.

A big cheat by having about 30 tanks but good for a laugh!

  27. #27
Here is a trick, maybe a bug.
If you pack up your trucks and send ALL your units to the radio tower(and if successful) secure it, the enemy will attack you there.
It's eaisier to defend cause they attack 1 area at a time there, but light vehicles might spawn at the end of the airfield.

With Canadian infantry at your command, you cannot fail this mission =D /go Canada

This is a fun mission! I like how it starts off as a commando raid, but then turns into a full on battle involving both defensive and offensive operations.

    Phase 1 - Commandos take the HQ's

Bring in another commando to make three, and flank the first Axis infantry squads with 2 Commandos while one holds them to their front. Nade the nest and they'll go down easily.

Your next objective is the little base. Flank across the road, keeping away from the MG in the tower, and leave one squad with the Shreks at the road - it'll nail the halftrack that tries to escape when you hit the base.

Infiltrate your other 2 squads into the forest, and have them duck in and ninja the MG and Shrek just inside the base through the hole in the wall. Use the smoke to keep them alive. Retreat them to the forest, and mow down any Axis infantry that spill out of the base through the hole. Once the smoke is off CD, rush them in to engage the halftracks. As noted, one will run, the other should be easily destroyed. If need be pop smoke and retreat again to the forest (you want your commandos alive). Hopefully both halftracks are down, and now you can take the base and the MG tower with satchels. Rush your commandos into the base, using smoke when they pop nades or satches in the MG tower and base.

Once the first base is down, call in the Tetrarch light tank. Watch out for the nasty nest of Nazis just up the road on the left side, including mortar teams and an MG. Avoid them for now by shifting right and entering the industrial area from the south. Send your tank in first to draw fire while your commandos rush and nade/satchel/shoot any resistance. Pick up the mortar and MG found here, which will make quick work of both the Axis squads to the north of the road and those inside the remaining base.

Phase 2 - The Canadians Arrive

The Tetrarch and Stuart tanks I suicide rushed to get rid of them. They actually did quite a bit of damage before they blew up. I had them sneak up the right side of the defensive line through a hole in the wall, and they rolled up the entire backside of the line, and back down along the front, almost making one full circuit. It was quite the Charge of the Light Brigade. They managed to weaken or kill a cpl infantry in the bargain.

Used the pop I saved to build another mortar team and build up 3 more Canadian Infantry for a total of 4. Equipped most with Bren's, but had one with rifle grenades. With my elite infantry force of British Commandos and Canadian Infantry backed up by two mortars and an MG, I easily rolled up their defensive line from right to left. I made sure to gently bombard the 88 I wanted to keep - the one by the tower in the middle - and the AT guns as well: I wanted them for later. As I moved along, I placed trenches to form my own defensive line for the counter attack later.

Phase 3 - Setting up the Defensive Line

Once I took the line, I had my troops man the AT guns and the 88. Moved my HQ trucks to just behind the line, where I built a Howie as well. This area was well-screened by trees for the air attacks that came later. Placed a Bofors in the open between the HQ and the middle tower: it alone will be enough to shoot down the Henkel fighter bombers that attack later.

My defensive line, from left to right, was as follows:

Left of Tower, had AT gun in far corner, two trenches with infantry, another AT gun behind the trenches.

Near the middle tower, the 88 gun was manned with 3 trenches in front of it, Bren Inf, Shrek Commandos, and Inf with rifle nades from L to R in this area (which were in range of the arch).

On the right, just in front of the arch, had two trenches with the two Commandos, one with a LMG and one with Shreks. Behind them, in deep cover in the trenches, were two mortar squads. The far right was not attacked at all, and so left that open.

Phase 4 - The Axis Counterattack

Then the fun begins! I rather enjoyed the Axis propaganda messages, and the response from the Canadian troops.

The left side tends to be attacked by infantry and armored cars for the most part: its the center and near the arch that gets the most attention, but the OP 88 is enough to handle anything in the middle or right, though you may want to micro the 88 in targeting the PzIVs when they show up. Tons of infantry rush near the arch, but the commandos with the nearby rifle nade Inf, plus the two mortar teams, absolutely slaughter the lot of them.

Be sure to ID that Hummel when it appears and use your Howie to nuke it ASAP. The longer it's up, the worse it is for you. When its down, use your Howie to nuke Axis troops suppressed near the arch by the commandos with the LMG. Otherwise, enjoy the show as wave after wave of Axis infantry throw themselves uselessly at the line. Be sure to repair the 88 and/or AT guns if needed with your engies.

Phase 5 - AAA vs Heinkels

One method of dealing with the planes is to rush a force up to the runway and shoot them down, but its risky. I found that my Bofors, placed right in the middle, was more than enough to shoot down the all the Heinkels that passed overhead for the objective. What damage they did simply healed up or repaired by engies.

While the Bofors was shooting down the planes, I was nuking the Axis line in the middle protecting the airfield, using the Howie to nuke the Panzerturm turrets and infantry in the trenches. I also carefully arty`d the area on the right where the stranded commandos are.

Had the pop left to build just one Cromwell, but it turned out to be enough.

Phase 6 - Advancing and Rescuing the Commandoes

As noted by posters above, you need to get the medal in the previous mission by using commandos to blow up the power generators (and live) to be able to rescue them in this mission. As soon as my Cromwell was up, I sent it on a rush up the left flank to save the Commandos in the top left building. Using its speed boost, I was easily able to bypass resistance and get there fast. Retreated back to the base for repairs.

Once repaired up, the Cromwell lead a general advance with all troops to the Axis concreted line across the field. The Commandos were on the right of the line and saved their brothers on the right, with help from the Cromwell. The rest of the force cleaned out the rest of the Axis resistance in that front line, and capped it. Moved up my HQ trucks and healed up. Deleted my Howie, and reconstructed it at this new base so as to cover the entire airfield.

Phase 7 - Capturing the Airfield

Once everybody was healed and repaired up, I shifted my force to the left flank and moved up and across the airfield and took the hangers one by one, from left to right. Generally had my infantry shoot holes through the walls and rush inside the hangers, while the Cromwell, AT guns and MG team stayed on the runway, turning to shoot inside the hangers when the infantry was starting to go in. Shooting through the walls isn`t an option for the last hanger, so I just rushed around the corner. All the while, mortars and arty was softening up any resistance.

Once the last bunker was down, I waited a bit while I nuked the hell out of the ATC tower area. The PzIV and bunkers in this area were easily dealt with by my 2 AT guns and Cromwell, while the infantry finished off any others nearby in a final rush to take the airfield.

Sometimes in these kinds of missions, enemy units aren't revealed until you infiltrate or otherwise send a unit over there. Generally however, there's a few squads of infantry and at least one armor unit per hanger guarding it. That's on easy. I have no idea what the other difficulties are like. One tactic I found useful after beating their offensive on the front line, was to use a Kangaroo, 1 infantry squad with a Bren gun (and a shek if you find one), an LT, and a piat squad.

The Kangaroo will keep your guys safe for a time, but watch for that armor and reorient the transport as needed. All you have to do really is drive through all the hangers killing everything. On the other hand, if your game is modded for the campaign, you might be able to reach the hangers with a couple 25 pounders and barrage the hell out of it.

i obliterated the shell of the hangers using mortars until it was only skeletons remaining, even blowing all the trucks & piles of fuel outside the hangers, still get the voice telling me to clear out the hangers

In a state of perpetual confusion.
The three posts above were originally posted in the wrong walkthrough thread, so I have moved them to this one.

I'm not sure if it was ever fixed, but there used to be a known bug with this mission where occasionally some German troops would escape from one of the hangars to the top left (northwest) corner of the map and get stuck there. Try sending a couple of squads right up to the top left corner to kill those troops.
